1 Ottawa Branch Bulletin October 2011 Bulletin Editor: Eric Clyde Snail mail: 1195 Foxborough Private, Ottawa ON K1J 1E2 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Greetings everybody! I trust you are all limbered up once again, and enjoying your classes. We held a very lively Welcome Dance, with Charlie Inglis irrepressible good humour leading the way. As our season begins we have both good news and bad news. Starting with the bad news, we have had to cancel the Monday night Intermediate Class because of low enrolment. This resulted in our amalgamating the Thursday night Basic Class with the intermediate dancers. It has now become our Intermediate Class. Thank you to Craig and Jody Williams, the teachers, who have agreed to teach at a basic-intermediate level. There is no cloud without a silver lining. Eileen Black, who had been scheduled to teach the Monday night Intermediate Class is now free to assist Phyllis MacCulloch with the Demonstration Team, and this is very much appreciated. The good news is that our new Demonstration Team is flourishing with sixteen members. Demonstrations have already been held at the Welcome Dance, the Stittsville Fair, and the 78th Fraser Highlanders Dinner, with more performances to take place in November. Time moves along very quickly. Our enthusiastic convenors of the Christmas Dance are already making detailed plans. Classes should also reflect on ceilidh items which they would like to perform at intermission. Serious or comic, those items always contribute to the atmosphere. In the near future, I hope to visit with all of you, either in the classes or at the November Social, whichever comes first. Radmila Swann MEA CULPA I want to apologize for an error in the address for contributions that appeared in the last edition of the Bulletin. It is bulletin@rscdsottawa.ca If you tried to send something, it did not reach me. Please send it again, if possible. The next edition of the Bulletin is due to be published on November 18th. The final date for contributions will th be November 6. Eric Clyde

4 DID YOU KNOW THAT OTTAWA HAS ITS OWN TARTAN? 1967 was, of course, the year of Canada s Centennial, so in 1966, the City of Ottawa set up a Centennial Committee which, among other plans, commissioned Mrs. Jean Docton to design a tartan. Jean was recognized as a qualified craftswoman who had won many awards for her textiles, and as a teacher of weaving in Ontario and Quebec for a number of years. The design was accepted as Official Tartan of Ottawa on November 21, 1966, and was fully registered as such on February 27, It belongs to all Ottawans, regardless of racial extraction. The story of Ottawa can be read in the cloth, as each colour has its own significance: a) The Royal Assent by the Crown that Ottawa should be the Capital of Canada. Thus the gold background. b) The three rivers, namely the Ottawa, the Gatineau and the Rideau [are] prominently depicted [by] the three light blue stripes. c) The three historical events, namely the Outaouas Indian Tribe, the exploration of Samuel de Champlain, and the building of the Canal by the Royal Engineers. These three events are depicted by the dark blue threads. d) As this area was brought into prominence by the vast expanses of white pine and the resulting industry, this relationship [is] incorporated. Thus the white threads. e) In Tartans, there is an indication of a square area. To form this square as a border, the red threads depict the Capital City. st [Extracted from Minutes of City Council, November 21, 1966] (If you are reading the printed version of the Bulletin, the colours of the tartan don t appear. If you have access to the Internet, you can see the tartan in full colour on the Branch website, rscdsottawa.ca, or at scotweb.co.uk) A TRIBUTE TO CLAIRE APSIMON: SUMMER SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING 2011 It was a wonderful way to spend each Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10:00 in Parkdale United Church enjoying Scottish country dancing for fun, fitness and friendship under the direction of Claire ApSimon. Claire had the dancing programmes prepared each Sunday to be sent via the Internet. Not only were the dance programmes interesting, but she dragged in the sound equipment and refreshments for each evening. She even provided special treats for birthday parties to honour members who had reached milestones in longevity! On the second Tuesday of the month, guest teachers were invited to conduct the class. Jody and Craig Williams presented some of the dances that were taught at the TAC summer school. A big thank you, Claire, for all your hard work. Lloyd and Doreen Gillespie NAME TAGS A smile is certainly a good icebreaker when meeting in class or on the dance floor. Wouldn't it also be nice to put a name to that friendly face? Your class convenor will be collecting names over the next few weeks for our annual name badge order. Pin clasp versions are $10 and magnetic clasps are $15.

6 TH 70 WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF BESSIE AND DAVID SMITH Now living in Kingston, Bessie Smith was the first secretary of the Ottawa Branch, and David was vice- Chairman on at least two occasions. David also took teacher candidate classes in Ottawa but, being in the Army, he was unlucky enough to have been posted elsewhere each time the examinations took place. However, after he had retired to Kingston, he finally took the exams and passed. He was also Chairman of the Kingston Branch. He and Bessie were both instrumental in starting the popular Kingston Weekend. Messages of congratulation were received from the Queen and the Governor General. Contributed by Margaret Macwaters JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE SENDAI RELIEF Sendai is a large city in north-east Japan with a population of about 1,000,000, a little more than the population of Ottawa (825,000). It was known as the City of Trees as residents were encouraged to plant trees in their gardens. The devastating To-hoku earthquake that occurred during the afternoon of Friday March 11th 2011 struck closest to Sendai and the subsequent tsunami caused widespread damage. Four certified teachers of the Sendai RSCDS Branch formed a committee to coordinate a relief effort for Scottish country dancers who lost their homes and family members. The Scottish country dance community around the world responded with benefit dances and activities to support their efforts. In our own Branch a freewill contribution from Branch members attending the annual general meeting earlier in May was made to the Relief Funds for the victims among Sendai Scottish Country Dance Group. These contributions, totalling $275 were forwarded to the Teachers' Association of Canada (TAC) who coordinated the overseas remittance. Thanks go out to the generosity of those who participated. Another local connection to fundraising efforts was the organization of a dance program (including some dances devised in Japan) by our own teacher Craig Williams. Craig's program was danced on the same day in both Ontario and Japan. The efforts of donated facilities and music allowed nearly all proceeds going to the Sendai dance group OBITUARY IAN POWRIE Born: 26 May, 1923, in Perthshire. Died: 5 October, 2011, in Australia, aged 88 His name is perhaps best known to Ottawa dancers through the dance, Ian Powrie s Farewell to Auchterarder, but Ian was a well known Scottish dance band leader from about 1949 until The band made a number of recordings. did many broadcasts on the BBC, and did a number of tours of North America, Australia and New Zealand. In 1966 he emigrated to Australia with the intention of taking up farming again, and so that he could spend more time with his family. While living Down Under, Powrie was in great demand as both a fiddler and competition judge. The family returned to Scotland in 1984 but emigrated again to Australia 15 years later, where he died in Perth. Three Knee-Length Ladies Kilts For Sale Excellent Condition 1.
