CSG Patron, the legend, Peter Barnes, who played for Manchester United, Manchester City, and the national team England, joined us during the tournament to talk to young people and support the youth tournament. Teams came from across Manchester to participate including young people playing for Manchester city and United youth teams. Teams included Can you kick it, Barlow Moor (BMCA), Powerhouse, Barlow Moor, Khizra, Moss Side FC, and Hideaway to name a few. The level of skill and team work was great to see from young people who organised themselves well and made the day thoroughly enjoyable. Young people thoroughly enjoyed the day and wanted to see further tournaments for them to be involved in. We look forward to watching these young people grow to become future sporting stars!

PAGE 2 Hideaway Champions! It was great to see such a mixture of different young people playing at the youth tournament, coming from across the communities in Manchester. The finalists of the youth tournament were Hideaway and Moss Side FC, who played a fantastic game. The final result was 1-0 to Hideaway, who came out as the champions of the tournament beating teams throughout the day. Well done to the guys and all those who participated in the day and made it a fantastic experience for everyone! COMMUNITY ON SOLID GROUND

ISSUE 11 PAGE Manchester Day Fun! Young people from CSG have been working with an artist for Manchester Day for the last couple of months in order to create a float and costumes based on the theme Game on. On Sunday 14th June, young people and CSG staff made their way into the centre of Manchester to meet the artist they had been working were placed in charge of their extraordinary float shaped like a lizards head which they had to cycle through the whole route and back! There was a lot of competition from the young people on who would get the opportunity to cycle it, but all managed to get a bit of a go and a photo! Young people wanted to be dressed as ninja warriors, to depict some of their favourite computer games that they play. They were excited to be dressed up and be cheered on by the massive crowds which attended the Manchester Day parade. Well done to the young people who put in the time and effort into the day! 3

I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 5 Health and Wellbeing Community Day On 17th April we carried out a Community Fun Day Event for local and the wider community and the Manley Park Community Centre. There were lots of fun things to do for all the family including Henna Artist, Make-up, Facepainting, Arts and Crafts, Bouncy Castle and lots more. There was also a healthy lunch provided for all attending. There were health providers who provided health checks to attendees and information and advice on healthier lifestyles. The event was very well attended with over 400 people attending the event through the afternoon. This was funded by Awards for All Big Lottery as an end of project celebration event for Active Females Healthier Lifestyles Project. We were delighted by a surprise visit from our MP Sir Gerald Kaufman who came to speak to local people and engage in the activities! We will be continuing to provide community days for local people throughout the year, so watch this space!

P A G E 6 Half Term Trips! YSG s young bikers attended a trip to Delamere Forrest where they took part in off Road Mountain biking around the famous tracks and trails. The day started off with a health and safety briefing at the mountain biking centre at the forest. The young people spent some time going through various bike safety checks before heading off for the day. Majid & Dave took the young people on the forest tracks and trails and covered over 10 miles in distance with the young people. The young people had a great time and some of the routes where very technical which made for some exciting challenges that the YSG young people negotiated with great enthusiasm. Well done boys. The girls group went on a half term trip to the cinema to watch Cinderella. The girls were all really excited to watch the movie which was inspired from the Classic Disney fairy tale. The film also screened a short film Frozen Fever featuring the Frozen characters which all the girls thoroughly enjoyed! Everyone enjoyed the trip especially our CSG princesses!! Ice Skating Trip The young people enjoyed a well-deserved half term trip to Silver Blades Ice Skating Rink. The trip was a fun filled day with a few slips, trips and bumps on the ice but they kept on going!! Our young volunteers did a fantastic job during the trip and supported those who found skating difficult! A Blackpool trip is planned for the summer break! 7 I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 7 Youth Half Term Football Champions! Over the half term CSG organised football boot camps for young people at Manley Park, engaging young people aged Young people were able to practice their football skills through dribbling, shooting practice and working in teams. In the last session a mini football tournament was organised where the young people who had been engaged in the boot camps were able to form their own teams and play against each other. The boot camps were a great success and we will continue to do them during school holidays in the park!

P A G E 8 Mash It Up Friday End Of Project Celebration! Young people celebrated the end of their project with local drama and media social enterprise to a trip to Archies in town! Young people had engaged in a 12 week project learning about how to use green screen and performing their own pieces. They also learnt how to use equipment and why it was important for the filming process. Vine Creation! Young people have been engaged in planning and filming their own vine videos. They have experimented with different music, spaces, story lines and more. They have also started to write their own lyrics using background music which is popular to create their own unique songs. 9 I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 9 Sunday Little Kickers Community On Solid Ground are heading towards a pinnacle stage of success at their Sunday Little Kickers Academy project in which our qualified F.A coaches have been taking a lead in great responsibility and making sure that our young rising stars reach their peak in their abilities when learning new skills from different coaches with different styles. Since our move to Broughton Park Sports Ground, the sessions have gained popularity and taken great advantage of new footballers that have been signed on and allowing these footballers a fantastic opportunity to give our Sunday project a phenomenal dimension to football with their skills and abilities. With the AstroTurf surface matching our player s needs, it has given us the chance to explore into new and more advanced drills which fill and take over a wider space which then brings a more professional play to the game. Youth On Solid Ground has also successfully put together an Under 10s football team (YSG F.C) that will be affiliated under the supervision of Fletcher Moss Rangers and shall be registered to play in next seasons league. What great news and clear signs of hard work and dedication our staff has put into making this possible, we have never seen our footballers so excited and in jubilation ever before.

P A G E 10 CSG Staff Rocking The Manchester Run! It was an early morning start on a sunny day in Manchester where the town centre played host to the start of the Great Manchester Run (10k). CSG s own sports coach Dave took part and did fantastic to finish 34 th out of 40,000 participants, beating a host of elite runners and gaining entry to the elite field for next year s race. Dave is a club runner and represents Sale Harriers who he has ran for since being a child. Dave ran a 10k personal best with a time of 32:29 and said of his achievement It was a good run and it was nice to run a road race in my home town of Manchester, thank you must go to my club mates at Sale Harriers and my colleagues at YSG for there support. The journey started on 10 th May Youth mentor and long time member of YOSG youth team, Aqeel Burton, took part in the Greater Manchester 10K run and completed it in a respectable time of 1hour and 25 seconds. He was able to partner up with a local charity WAFA Relief who help to support poor communities in Africa. He chose to raise money to build a water well in TOGO and was able to complete this before the race day. Not content with this he was further challenged to compete in the recent Liverpool rock n roll half Marathon on the 14 of June. After 4 weeks of intensive training and early morning runs and refraining from kebabs and ice cream, he set of to Liverpool to run 13.1 miles. This time his aim was much bigger. To raise 3600 that would be used to support 10 orphans for a whole year. He expresses that this was probably the toughest thing he s ever done especially since he over trained and had cramping attacks on his thighs from the halfway point. But determined to complete the race the raise and to bring home hope to the 10 orphans, he kept on going and going and going. He eventually finished in 2 hours and 13 minutes but was disappointed not to break 2 hour barrier. Not to rest on his laurels Aqeel has vowed to come back with a bang! He plans to run another half marathon in September and hopefully improve on his time and raise some more money for charity. C O M M U N I T Y O N S O L I D G R O U N D

I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 11 Manley Park School Summer Fair This year s Manley Park Summer fair, on Friday 12th June, would not have been the same without CSG being there to help provide some of the fun and games. The fair took place at the school grounds and despite the weather not being in our favour we had a great time providing fun and games with the local Whalley Range Young People. CSG provided traditional sports day games and relay races. The children took part in egg & spoon races, target throw challenges and speedy relay running in teams. Thanks must go to the school staff for organising the event and for again inviting us to be a part of it. Mentoring In Schools Our mentoring in schools programme has been a great success, with mentors working with high schools in Manchester to cater to the needs of young people in schools, specifically those from BAME background. The schools have seen an improvement in overall behaviour as well as academic performance due to this intervention with potential extension of this work. More CSG volunteers and staff are training for mentoring to develop their skills to provide services to more schools and communities. If you are interested in learning more about the mentoring in schools programme, get in touch on: admin@yosg.org.uk

P A G E 12 Friday Night Street Redz Project Every Friday evening sees hoards of young people from all corners of Manchester come together in the spirit of sport and love for football. The sessions see upwards of 70 young people in attendance on a regular basis and are facilitated in partnership between CSG & MUFC (foundation). We have recently introduced a monthly competition to encourage competitiveness. So far we have done two round robin style football competitions with the young people playing 5-a side football against all other teams. Prizes have included football boots and match day tickets to see Manchester United. More to come! Football Leaders Project The CSG football leader s project has seen a few changes during this quarter. The session has changed times to 6-8pm but still run on a Wednesday evening each week. CSG provide football sessions during the session but also offer mentoring and support for the young people in attendance. The football leaders session is still as popular as ever and plays host to over 40 young people on regular basis. Recently CSG put a football team together from the young people who attend this session and entered into the City Wide Football Tournament that took place at the Platt Lane complex. The CSG Football Leaders did themselves and the coaches proud as they reached the quarter finals of the tournament. Well done Zarar Khan, Zak Dahir, Yasin Nuur, Omar Santos, Elmi Jama, Mohammed Jabir, Mohammed Adan & Ebrahim Sadigh. C O M M U N I T Y O N S O L I D G R O U N D

I S S U E 1 1 P A G E 13 Women s Projects ESF Changing Lives Project This 9 month project was very successful and engaged with over 29 women over its term. This project allowed for women to come together and gain skills that will help them to move closer to the labour market. In the last sessions they were supported with C.V writing and Interview techniques to help with their confidence and knowledge base. A number of learners have gone onto find voluntary work and other courses that will help them to their individual goals. Feedback from the group included; I feel more confident now and will be able to look for other courses or job opportunities I really enjoyed the course, it allowed me to make new friends and see them weekly.i liked the workshops and the way they were delivered To celebrate the end of the project learners enjoyed a trip to Pizza Hut for a nice relaxing lunch at Trafford Centre. Drop-in Information and Advice Surgery This service is continuing to support people with a number of issues such as; Benefits, Practical and Emotional support, Employment Issues, Budgeting and Finance, Domestic Violence, Health and Well-being and more. All support is provided by a Bi-lingual Qualified Advisor. Drop-In times are 1pm to 4pm Every Monday.

P A G E 14 New Adventures! We were proud to hear from one of our young sessional workers, Waqaas Zafar, who has been accepted on a sports programme for three months in America! Waqaas started with CSG as a young person attending the various projects in the community. He later decided to volunteer his time which then led to him gaining a position as a sessional worker. What an amazing experience for him and a fantastic role model for young people! Young Voice Workshops at MMU CSG members of staff participated in a series of workshops held by Manchester Metropolitan University s, Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, (MCYS). It was an interactive look at how to engage young people, using the arts, photography and different communication tools such as Ketso. C O M M U N I T Y O N S O L I D G R O U N D
