Main Sponsors MESSAGE FROM OUR MAIN SPONSORS Tobermory Single Malt Scotch Whisky is proud to be the official whisky sponsor of the word famous Isle of Mull Rugby Club Sevens tournament Tobermory Distillery is the only distillery on the Island of Mull and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland. Its old world charm reflects the Tobermory spirit to do things the old fashioned way, by hand. We would like to wish all the teams well and look forward to a great tournament. TOBERMORY DISTILLERS Club Sponsors (The Club, Youth Rugby, Club Wear, Food etc.) Tobermory Distillery, TSL Construction, Glengorm, Inverlussa Marine Services The Craignure Inn, Isle of Mull Soap IMPORTANT POLICE NOTICE Local police concerns are the need for a sufficient number of stewards to enforce licensing conditions on the premises. To work with the police club stewards will be readily identifiable by name badges. One particular worry is that younger club supporters (not being able to purchase at the bar) may try and bring alcohol onto the premises. The stewards are under instructions that only alcohol purchased on the premises can be consumed on the premises. Alcohol from other sources must not be brought into the club house.

3 ISLE OF MULL WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT Started in 1985 the Isle of Mull Sevens Tournament brings together rugby clubs from all over the West Highlands and Islands along with guest players. Rugby players from all walks of life and all levels of skill compete on equal terms of skill and enjoyment. By doing this we hope to promote rugby in Scotland s West Highlands and Islands. The very social nature of rugby and the fact that it is a game for all weathers makes it an ideal sport for our isolated rural areas where long trips and overnight stays are commonplace. Mull s geographic position in the centre of this remote area makes it the perfect setting for a competition of this nature. For these reasons the Sevens Committee award trophies to the best West Highland team in the tournament. As an added incentive these trophies are for the winning club to keep. The rules for this competition are on Page 26. In 1992 the Mull Sevens made rugby history by running a dual tournament for both ladies and men. This was the first of its kind anywhere in the world! This makes 2013 the twenty-eighth anniversary of the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens THE THEME OF THE 2013 SEVENS IS VAMPS AND VICTIMS MULL 7 s PRIZES Men s Winner Gruline Cup & Medals Women s Winner Pink Cup & Medals Best West Highland Team s ( Mens & Womens ) Trophies to Keep & Medals Players of the Tournament ( Selected by the Referees and Chosen from the West Highland Teams ) A great Social Seven s!!!! 7 5 WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND TEAMS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THE ISLE OF MULL SEVENS ISLE OF MULL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Mull is the third largest of the Hebrides. The coast line, broken by sea lochs, bays and inlets is the amazing length of over 300 miles. On Sunday 30th July, 1978 the first game of Rugby was played and won on Mull! Shortly after, the Isle of Mull Rugby Club was formed and has thrived on what can only be described as arduous conditions. In 1989 the Mull Rugby Club won three 7 s tournaments. These playing achievements and the completion of the Garmony Sports pitches gained the club the honour of being MacEwan s Club of the Month in September In 1992 the Mull Club made history by running the first dual sevens tournament for both men and women. This tournament is now recognised as the "Worlds most Sociable Sevens". Shortly after the clubhouse was completed. In 2002 the club became the first Glasgow and District island side to be promoted to the National Leagues. Mull was the first club awarded the Hydro Electric Club of the Month in September This reward was given in recognition of the success of the junior section which had cumulated in winning both a National Tag Rugby Title and the Murrayfield tournaments Fair Play Award. A major refurbishment was completed in 2011 to upgrade the Garmony facilities to an Island Sports Hub. Mull are the holders of the Mull Sevens Trophy WOMEN S SECTION: Mull women s teams have won the main tournament once. The women s rugby team was officially constituted into the Isle of Mull Rugby Club in CLUB PITCH: Garmony. CLUB HOUSE: Garmony Clubhouse. ARRAN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: It is often said that Arran is Scotland in miniature - having wild mountains to the north and a fertile plain to the south. An ideal gathering ground for rugby players. Arran Rugby club was started in September 1975 and for 10 years the club played only friendly games. In that time the hospitality of these islanders became legendary with many a visiting team, long overdue when finally returning home! In 1985 the club took a major step and joined the Glasgow District League. By careful timing of kick-offs they are able to play and return by ferry on the same day. We wish them well for next season when they are competing in the same league as Mull. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 10 BENBECULA NOMADS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have been linked by bridges and causeways to form a single long island. Benbecula is separated from its neighbours by stretches of shell sand and quick sand. On the southern slope of the largest hill Rueval, all of 408 feet high, is the cave in which Prince Charles Edward Stuart hid while waiting for Flora MacDonald. In 1977 some local lads and schoolboys got together and formed a rugby team. They have no home for the club; hence the name Benbecula Nomads. The locals found difficulty in sustaining a team and later combined with the army team. The number of civilians to service players fluctuated from year to year. Local players come from all three islands. The team have amazing travel difficulties. In fact on one occasion they left for a game in Edinburgh on Thursday and due to storms were not able to return until the following Wednesday! This perhaps explains why they play very, very few games. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 1

6 BUTE RUGBY CLUB CLUB HISTORY: With the mountains of Arran to the south and those of Argyll to the north, Bute is a lowland island in a highland setting. The capital is Rothesay, perhaps the best loved of all the Clyde resorts. Although closest of all the visiting teams to the main centres of rugby in and around Glasgow the Bute team is also restricted by a ferry journey across the Firth of Clyde to Wemyss Bay. In fact, players leaving for Mull do so by the less time consuming Rhubodach - Colintraive ferry. Bute Rugby Club was founded in They run one team. Bute stalwart, Ivan Cowie, has won a Mull Sevens award for Services to West Highland Rugby. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 19 ISLAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Islay, the southernmost of the inner Hebrides, has a population of 4,000. Each year it pays the Exchequer the equivalent of 6,000 for each man, women and child on the island! The reason for such riches is uisge-beatha - the water of life! i.e. whisky, which Islay produces in large quantities. Islay R.F.C. joined the SRU in December Islay run their own great event, a beach rugby festival, that normally takes place in the warmer summer months. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 9 KINTYRE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Were it not for a tiny isthmus at Tarbert, Kintyre would be a member of the inner Hebrides. Principal town is Campbeltown - probably once the capital of the Celtic Kingdom of Dalriada; the name Campbeltown comes from the early 1600 s when Archibald Campbell was Earl of Argyll. Kintyre Rugby Club started in 1983 with a meeting at the Ardshiel Hotel, Campbeltown. In 1985 they joined the Glasgow and District League. Kintyre are, at present having a wee break. We are very much looking forwards to Kintyre coming back to the Mull Sevens. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 13 LOCHABER RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Travelling north when you cross the Ballachulish Bridge you enter Lochaber truly Scotland s grandest landscape. Lochaber is spread at the foot of the Great Glen and at the head of Loch Linnhe stands Ben Nevis. Between Ben Nevis and Loch Linnhe lies the chief town of Lochaber - Fort William. Lochaber R.F.C. was officially started in 1969, a good five years after Oban. Her officials point out, however, that the first team in Fort William was playing way back before the war in 1933 it ran for a few years and then folded. Lochaber is a strong West Highland team. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 22 MID ARGYLL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: In 1977 a few enthusiastic players started a team, based at Lochgilphead and called it Mid Argyll. Lochgilphead is a town of Victorian and later stone houses, standing on a slope at the top of Loch Gilp, an inlet off Loch Fyne. The Crinan Canal, which skirts the town, is a never ending source of enjoyment as boats journey backwards and forwards from the Sound of Jura. Mid Argyll have a great tournament record being twice winners and runners-up three times and also winning BWH Team Trophy. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 24 OBAN LORN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: By West Highland standards Oban is a large town, essentially where steamers meet road and railway. From the piers fishing boats are constantly coming and going; ferries for the inner and outer Hebrides as well as a host of smaller ports leave daily and various supply boats load and unload. During the summer tourists fill the rows of hotels along the front, attracted by Highland Games, Ceilidhs, Regattas or the general scenic splendour. Oban Lorn RFC have a showpiece Clubhouse. Oban are the most powerful of the West Highland sides. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 26

7 PORT-RIGH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB - Ellen a Cheo CLUB HISTORY: The name of Port-Righ is the gaelicised form of Portree, which means King s Harbour - conferred on the town after the visit of James V s fleet in Eilean a Cheo means island of mist or the Misty Isle - a bit less of a mouthful than an-t eilean Sgiathanach (Isle of Skye). From the sea the clouds clinging to Skye can be seen long before its craggy peaks; thus the Norsemen called it Skygo or Isle of Clouds. It is a land of mountain and moor. Tourism apart, crofting is the main occupation of its 7,500 population. Port-Righ was founded in January 1987 with the aim of promoting rugby in the island of Skye. Only a few friendlies were played until the beginning of the 87/88 season when the club applied for and was accepted, to play in the Highland B League. Port-Righ is on a sabbatical at present. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 5 SKYE AND LOCHALSH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Skye and Lochalsh are one of the few rugby clubs whose name encompasses both island and mainland players. An island player has to cross by ferry at Kyleakin to play, for it is on the mainland that the club has its facilities. Kyle of Lochalsh is a bustling little township which has a constant feeling of coming and going. Skye and Lochalsh was founded in 1975 and initially played only friendlies. The team now play in the Highland League. Skye and Lochalsh were the first winners of our trophy with a superb team performance. Who will ever forget the dramatic tie-break situation against Mid Argyll in the final. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 5 STORNOWAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Stornoway is the metropolis of the Western Isles and the only town of burgh size in the Hebrides. It is situated towards the north-east of the single island of Lewis and Harris. Though some 25,000 people live on Lewis and Harris the island contains huge barren areas. Stornoway with a good natural harbour is a fishing port, a market and a centre for the Harris Tweed industry. Tweed manufacturers gave rise to strong border connections; Mills management often trained at the textile college in Gala. Not surprisingly this link led to the founding of Stornoway R.F.C. in The club played for ten years, stopped for ten years and then revived. Stornoway R.F.C. runs one team based in the town with access to a council playing field (they lost a previous field to NATO when a runway was extended). They do not play in a league because of problems with winter ferry timetables but do play in the Brin Cup. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 1 COLL CLUB HISTORY: The Isle of Coll is to the north west of Mull. It is a stunning island with many white shell-sand beaches down the west coast. Even though the population is very small, Rugby on the island took a turn for the better when Scotland international player and team captain, Rob Wainwright, moved their in The Coll team have a very famous history of appearances at the Mull Sevens. They did in fact win the competition on their first appearance (albeit boosted by several internationalists). NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 10 Faultless Commentary MUILEACHS Names like Jackson, Cameron, Carmichael, Noble and Swinbanks sent shivers of fear down the opposition in When they re-appeared in 1990 only Carmichael remained of that first magnificent seven. The 2012 Mull Sevens brought the Muileachs their finest hour. The team reached the Sevens final. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE SEVENS 8

17 9 Tag Finals Day Welcomes the Sacred Isle Today s Tag Rugby Finals complete the seventh year that the Island wide Tag Rugby Programme has been running. The development of Rugby on Mull is continuing to flourish thanks to the fantastic family support these competitions are attracting. It is with your help and the fun we see the youngsters having that makes this all worthwhile. We are more Coll steal the show than delighted to welcome Iona Primary School into our Programme this season. The support from both school and family has been outstanding, reflected in the way the youngsters have burst onto the Tag Rugby Circuit. We welcome Arinagour Primary School from the Isle of Coll to our Finals Day once again, making this year the first Tri-Island Tag Rugby Tournament. Arinagour Primary School is this year entering one team into both the Cup and the Quaich competitions. This is a fantastic effort from the Coll Squad involving a huge amount of expense having to hire, not only a charter boat, but also a 52 seater bus to take them to Garmony. We would love to return the complement of all our Tag Teams visiting Coll as part of next year s Programme. This year s Tag Finals Day will witness the opening of a new chapter for the Isle of Mull Rugby Club as we become the 17th club in Scotland, the 1st Island and 1st Argyll & Bute Club to become accredited to the Positive Coaching Scotland Programme in association with the Bill McLaren Foundation. We are delighted to welcome Linda Lawson, daughter of the late Bill McLaren, husband Alan Lawson, President of the Scottish Rugby Union and PCS Manager, Bosman Du Plessis. During today s celebrations there will be a short Parent s workshop which Bosman ensures us will be great fun, enlightening and he promises you will be returned to the Rugby sidelines as quickly as possible. The Club takes this opportunity to thank the Head Teachers, Staff and Parents of all the Islands Primary Schools for their support and amazing hospitality shown throughout the season, Active Schools for their continued support, the Volunteer Coaches for their time and dedication and also the Local Businesses who have invested in the future successes of our Club. 15 13 MULL NOTICE BOARD 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY In 1993 Mull rugby Club had firmly established the the world s first men s and women s Sevens tournament. The Clifton team from Bristol became firm favourites for many years and honoured the tournament with many fine players including internationalists. Last year they returned for a visit. Wonderful to see you again girls. THE HALL John MacIntyre Neil Williams Donald MacLennan James MacPhail LEGENDS OF MULL RUGBY To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Silver Sevens, the Isle of Mull Rugby Club introduced a Mull Rugby Club Hall of Fame. To qualify for the Hall of Fame a player must: 1) Have been an outstanding club player and personality. 2) Not played for the Club for at least 10 years (if you re remembered that long on Mull you must be good). Players are inaugurated to the Hall only once a year. This year James MacPhail enters the Mull Rugby Hall of Fame. James was one of the first players to come through the Mull Minis. At sixteen he started playing for the senior side and was a prolific try scorer. The club strongly recommended James for national honours. The following year James was capped for Scotland at U18. 17 TEAM NOTICE BOARD The Penny Drops Due to the marriage of a lovely girl called Penny, this ramshackle group of elderly Highland RFC players, and others who used to be good, has assembled to enjoy the delights of Mull. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see if they still are good at 7s and to mark the unavailability of another eligible lady. Players in the line up to look out for include: Gareth High who has received the SRU fair play award 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, a Gary Linker celebrity look-alike, and one of the stars of hit 90s Canadian TV show Due South. A notable omission from the playing ranks is ex professional Euan Mackintosh who sadly had to retire recently due to antiginger campaign groups in northern france (not the Nazis). Despite his affliction, we welcome him as coach and hope that he won't have to deal with any xenophobic sentiment whilst visiting the Inner Hebrides. Despite persistent calls for our mascot (and team 'hardman') to follow Gareth Thomas along the gay (happy) path to rugby league, Richard Sim has stuck with his dream and became a dancer for lesser known Hawaiian pop duo 'Brothers Cazimero', he hopes to show off his moves to some of the boys on the rugby field. News: The wedding is on the 28th of June at Advie Church, near Nethy Bridge at 2pm. Anyone still standing by Sunday morning is more that welcome to come along, please see team mascot Mr Richardson for details. Aloha. The Coll team In its new strip of Navy and Green with Gold trim, has enjoyed intensive training sessions once or twice a week since last May. It has also benefitted from the marvellous new facilities at An Cridhe, Coll's new community centre and this year boasts considerably improved skills and fitness, allied to a fierce desire to win. That's the primary school team, of course. Meanwhile the men's team is delighted that Zimmer has renewed its sponsorship deal and has celebrated with a couple of gentle runouts this week. Ably led as ever by Rob Wainwright, it's an all-coll team this year - surely a first. Watch out for a couple of youngsters under 40 and enjoy the endorsements for rheumatism cream and viagra. Highland return to Mull after going AWOL last season. It's always hard to know what team will turn up, giving we are arriving on the Friday night. Look out for some ridiculous banter, with Big Kenny " What's the frequency" Cameron being allowed back onto the island! It was also rumored that Scuba's nose is bigger than is c*$k, however after he measured it, he informs us that this is not true. There should be plenty of pace in the team with the inclusion of both Findlaters and Rory Cross, who is still saddened by the destruction of his lair at the club. Snitch and Irvine reduce the speed somewhat and are probably two of the fatest backs you will see. The Gentlemen of Ellon The vanguard of marauding disassociated degenerates hailing from the greater Ellon metropolitan area. The Gents are currently on a worldwide quest to seek new paddocks for code, watering holes for scooping and breeding grounds for Jimmy Mcjockney. The GOE are a non-for-profit, non-for-charity, non-affiliated with Ellon RFC organisation. Gents Director of Rugby, Scott "Goatbags" Johnstone, (not that Scot Johnson) has the players will drilled for the tournament and feels confident they might actually score a try. Players of note include veteran centre Eddie Adie who has a solitary cap for Estonia, which he gained by accident during a stagger, scoring 2 tries in the process. Another valuable member of he squad is stand off Alix Scooper MacDonald, fresh from a recent stint inside after he accidentally bored a young lady to death, he will be looking to exploit his pace and vision on the vast open spaces of the sevens pitch. He might even get through a game without getting charged down. Having discovered a canny knack of scoring during a preseason trip to Dundee, Ov has gone from strength to strength this season and will be looking continue his rich vain of form this weekend, watch out ladies.. Stobswell Basking Sharks Our team has been assembled from the finest players available but they missed the ferry so this lot had to step up, we are sorry. Club captain - Craig Shearer, tall, blonde and... Sadly happily in a relationship ladies so stay away from him as is our new vice captain Mark Gibson. Been in a relationship for ages so again ladies your out of luck. Joining them is our birthday boy Andy "it's grim up North" Taylor. Sadly our spiritual leader and head cheerleader, Jamie Scott couldn't make it this weekend but we aim to up hold the traditions he brought last year and drink until the sun comes up. Other than that see you in the clubhouse after if certain tourists make it that far this year...written by Nathan Smith (come and say hi ladies I'm the one with the funky hair) Livingston Neil Gibson (El Managerio), Connor Clark (El Capitanio and Chief Organiser Controlling Kit), Clinton Lundie (SA International), Blair Milner (Scottish national), Callum Gillespie (Mull virgin), Thomas Jackson (Mull virgin), Gavin McQuillan (Mull virgin), Iain Day (Mull virgin), James Campbell (soon to be known as "Daddy"), Gibby possibly and a few other guys from the Isle or places.we're bringing beer!!! The Ladies also received a silver in the RBS Women's Plate Championships. Melrose Ladies invited Stirling County again to play against them at the Melrose Sevens in April, right before the final, this game was played to help bring notice to the Women's side of the game. The Ladies also hosted their first annual Stirling County Women's Sevens Tournament, which they placed second in the Cup. The day was very successful and included tournaments for the Under 12s, 15s, 18s and Women's. Visit and Last year at Mull the Ladies won the most social-able team award...may be aiming for a repeat this year. Thanks to Mull RFC for such a great weekend of sevens! Mull Women One of our team Kara Mckee had her baby in December 2012, still loving motherhood so she will not be returning to play this year. We have been training on and off and would like to thank Charlotte Peacock, Frankie Ratcliffe and Eilidh Mitchall for coming down and helping bring the numbers up for training.
