3 CHAIRMAN S REVIEW It is impossible to summarize sport in 2011/12 without falling short but stupendous, extraordinary, emotional and exhilarating will do for now. Headed of course by the Olympics, 2012 is a reflection of all that is good about sport in this country and of the investment that has been made. If we all cannot build on these outcomes in creating generations of young sportsmen and women with the investment needed from public and private sources, we will fail the future generations who are there in their thousands to be helped, nurtured and driven to excellence. British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is a key player in supporting the Higher Education (HE) sector to deliver its collective talents. We celebrate in particular all those athletes who competed at the highest levels of their sport in 2011/12 and who will have benefitted from their university experience and the wider skills contributed by sport to their lives. We also celebrate our drive in the HE sector to increase participation in sport amongst our 2.3milllion students and it is great to see growth yet again in our competitive sports programme entries. It is rewarding also that Active People shows that Higher Education is the only sector in Sport England's youth directorate, which has evidenced growth. And it is fantastic to celebrate gold at the highest international level for students representing Great Britain in netball and both men's and women's rugby sevens. A highlight for BUCS members and for our small team of dedicated staff has to have been the London 2012 Athletics test event in the Olympic Stadium in early May. Record entries, incredible numbers of personal bests, fantastic competition and over 60,000 people watching made it an extraordinary four days of competition in the venue that the world would be watching just weeks later. Take nothing away from all the activities which BUCS and our members have delivered in 2011/12 but surely for all of us who were there in Stratford, it has to be stand out moment for our sector and one which generated unprecedented media coverage for BUCS and members in which the importance of HE sport was made clear. We should also remember the exciting rowing, rugby and football finals as well as national finals in our many other sports and our Championships again at Sheffield which has been such a great location for our multi-sport events. Members will know that all of this goes alongside a strong and vibrant membership organisation where we focus on sports delivery and development including the greater integration of disability sport and on our financial stability, which enables work on advocacy and investment in our future. You will have equally marveled at the great sport in the Paralympics and it is our stated ambition to support disabled athletes and participants in sport within the HE Sector. On our finances, colleagues will know from Conference and from our communications that balancing the necessary investment in our future and delivering all that our members ask with increases in fees is something we watch closely. Financial stability and appropriate levels of reserves is an important part of that equation. We have more to achieve to satisfy ourselves and our members but it is truly heartening to see record numbers at the BUCS Conference and Awards Dinner and a mood of balanced optimism, tinged with concern about continued investment through a period of prolonged austerity. We know investment is essential and is not a free gift but we can demonstrate the business and societal case for what we do, and we must. We are pleased that our Sports Development team has been funded for a further three years and that there are clear indications that Sport England see HE as an important part of their investment in youth sport. We hope that we can create and deliver the same interest in the rest of our Nations. It remains a privilege to lead and support the great efforts of our staff, our members and our volunteers to develop our sector further and I hope you enjoy reading the 2011/12 review with pride after a year of superlatives and enthusiasm for our future. 6 BUCS AWARD WINNERS Olympic Medalist and BBC Olympic Swimming Correspondent Steve Parry hosted the annual British Universities & Colleges Sport Awards Dinner, in association with PwC, where more than 400 people joined us to recognise and celebrate the best of student sport from the past twelve months. Parry was joined on stage by England Rugby legend and World Cup winner Lewis Moody who presented the awards to the individuals and teams acknowledged for their contribution to the success of Higher Education sport during the past twelve months Olympic medalist Jonny Brownlee (University of Leeds) won Sportsman of the Year for the second year running as he continues to embed himself as one of the leading triathletes in the world. Jonny, who competed in this year's BUCS Cross Country Championship as part of his training for London 2012, has been a superb ambassador for student sport and showcased his talent to the nation by winning bronze in this summer's Olympic Games. The prestigious PwC Sportswoman of the Year award recognised University of Nottingham student High Jumper Isobel Pooley who won indoor and outdoor gold in BUCS competitions as well as making her senior international debut, representing Great Britain at the European Championships in Helsinki and establishing herself as the number two British female high jumper. Loughborough continued their dominance of the BUCS points table as they collected the Kerslake Trophy for an astonishing 34th consecutive year. Second place was awarded to Durham University after a very successful season that included Championship final appearances in Rugby, Cricket and Basketball as well as Championship victories in men's Lacrosse and women's Hockey. Birmingham slipped down one place from last year as they picked up the third place trophy. The University of Derby scooped the much coveted Most Improved University as they moved up 27 places from 104th to 77th in the overall BUCS points table. The first award of the evening went to Will Turner with Lewis Moody presenting him with the Student Volunteer of the Year award for his enthusiasm and dedication to growing participation at the University of Nottingham. Next RELAYS, a joint project by eleven universities of the South West, won the Diversity in Sport award in recognition of the 1032 sporting events delivered this year to provide playing and volunteering opportunities. The winner of this year's BUCS PwC Unsung Hero award threw himself into the promotion of his institution s sport and student sport as a whole, and supporting students to develop their media skills and use university sport as a way to progress their skills and ambitions, congratulations to Christopher Penn from Swansea University. The Chris Potter Award went to Krishna Suraj Kambi from the University of Bedfordshire. Krishna who is studying for an extended law degree is working to develop every aspect of football at his university. Our official charity partner Right to Play awarded the Red Ball Award to the University of Cambridge for their fundraising activities and support of Right to Play events, while the Kukri 'For the Team' Award was won by the University College London women's Rugby team after a record breaking season. Congratulations to our winners and also all our nominees who all played their role in making the past twelve months so successful for university sport. 7 BUCS CHAMPIONSHIPS REVIEW Sheffield was once again the host for the 5th annual BUCS Championships in March 2012, as eighteen BUCS sport finals took place culminating in a repeat of last year's basketball final as the University of Worcester edged an enthralling contest against Durham University to successfully defend their title. Over 4000 students showcased their talents and skills, with 36 BUCS Champions crowned across the five days of competition. It was Durham University who topped the medal table with 15 medals in total, including seven BUCS Championship Gold medals. The BUCS Netball and men's Basketball Championship finals were the showcase events this season, with, for the first time ever, both events ticketed for spectators. It is testament to the fantastic venues, with the majority operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), which Sheffield boasts that BUCS can grow the event each year and offer spectator opportunities to the top events. On top of the fantastic sport competitions the BUCS Championships also offered students the opportunity to get involved in other activities through the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) of Sport Practical Showcase. With eight NBGs offering individuals and teams the opportunity to participate and learn about their sport offering and programmes it created a great hub of activity for students to visit outside of the normal competition programmes. The BUCS Championships would not be a success without the help and support of hundreds of volunteers and officials. As one of the UK's largest multi-sport events the BUCS Championships needs skilled and dedicated volunteers and BUCS is blessed with some of the greatest volunteers in the UK and we are always grateful for their support. 10 SPORTS PROGRAMME REVIEW This year had already been confirmed as a big year for BUCS sport with the contract in place for the hosting of our Outdoor Athletics Championships at the Olympic stadium. This was to be the official Athletics Test Event for the Olympic Games as part of the London Prepares Series so the pressure was on; more on this later. Team entries continued to rise with numbers approaching 4150 and with the new Sport Criteria in place several sports were looking to be added to the programme and potentially boost these numbers for the following season. Sports that experienced a larger than average growth this year were men's Indoor Cricket, Equestrian, men's Football, women's Lacrosse, Netball and Swimming. This year has seen a focussed piece of consultation carried out which has looked at identifying the motivations of Premier League teams and institutions which resulted in the development of a new competition framework that will enable sports together with the relevant institutions to create sports specific programmes that will enhance the provision of top level university league sport. We have continued to look at ways in which we can offer larger competitive opportunities enabling more of the membership to engage through our regional and national events and we have been working as closely as ever with our Commercial, Communications & Marketing team to ensure that bigger really does mean better and that the students experience at all of our events is as good as it can be. The team have been busy recruiting in some cases new and in some cases re-appointing existing Sports Advisory Group (SAG) Chairs, who moving forward will be instrumental in assisting in the development of each of our sports. The next stage which is well underway is the recruitment of SAG members who will again bring further expertise and knowledge to the organisation. At this point it is appropriate to thank not only our senior volunteer partners but also the thousands of people that freely give up their time to enable all our events, competitions and championships to be run professionally. The BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships, as mentioned previously, became the BUCS VISA Outdoor Athletics Championships, part of the London Prepares Series, and was run in partnership with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG). After 18 months of meetings with not only LOCOG but the IAAF, IOC, Universities UK, Government Ministers, UK Athletics, our own athletics clubs and members Friday 4th May was upon us and the championships started in the Olympic Stadium. It was a truly remarkable experience with over 60,000 spectators witnessing the variety and standard that the BUCS athletics championship offers. The standout performances over the weekend came from Andrew Pozzi of the University of the West of England, winning the 110m hurdles in an Olympic 'A' qualifying standard and Charlotte Purdue of St Mary's who broke the BUCS 5000m record in both her heat and to win the final, these were two of eight championship best performances over the course of the meet. There is still clearly a real desire for members to engage in a wide variety of inter university sporting opportunities and the work of the staff, our SAGs and volunteers is ensuring that what we offer is still relevant, professionally run, cost effective and is meeting the needs of our members. 10 Annual Review 2011/12

11 SPORTS A-Z ARCHERY The 2011/12 BUCS Archery season was one of great strides forward. The Indoor Championships, held in February at Telford International Centre, attracted over 620 student archers making it the biggest university championships in history and one of the largest archery competitions in the UK. This year saw the University of Edinburgh lose its decade long hold on the Team Championships as the University of Nottingham defeated them winning the title for the first time, shooting a Championship Record in the process. Andrew Randall's win in the men's Recurve was a highlight of Nottingham's strong team performance, he set a new Championship Record of 591 out of 600 just ahead of last year's winner and team mate George Harding. It was Harding who came out on top later in the year as he successfully defended his men's Recurve title at the BUCS Outdoor Archery Championships whilst Edinburgh's Margaux Mesle won women's gold in the same event. In the team competition, Edinburgh triumphed over the University of Warwick and the University of Southampton to take this year's title and extend their run of Team Championship wins to six consecutive years. This year we also saw the formation of a new Archery Sports Advisory Group that will provide their technical expertise to support the delivery of the archery programme. ATHLETICS The highlight of the sporting programme saw the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships hosted as the London 2012 athletics test event for the Olympic Stadium. There was unprecedented demand for places with applications exceeding 2500 for the 1700 places. Over four days of competition approximately 60,000 spectators witnessed 437 personal bests, eight Championship Best Performances and Andrew Pozzi (the University of the West of England) run the 'Olympic A Standard' qualifying time in the men's 110m hurdles to win gold. The Championships was full of highlights including Loughborough University's Justine Kinney winning the first ever race in the London Olympic stadium and Charlie Purdue (St Mary's University College) stealing the show as she set Championship Records in both the heats and the final of the 5000m. The oldest Championship Record to fall was broken by the University of Birmingham's Nick Crunchly who broke the Pole Vault Championship Record of 5.21m that had been held by Sheffield Hallam s David Hughes since The BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships was again held at EIS, Sheffield athletes took part with Championship Best Performances recorded by Andrew Pozzi (UWE) in the men's 60m hurdles, Brunel University's women's Triple Jumper Shakira Wright and first year Isobel Pooley (University of Nottingham) in the women's High Jump. The BUCS Cross Country was successfully hosted by Cardiff University in wintery conditions. The University of Birmingham took gold in both the men's and women's races through Jonny Hay and Hannah Walker respectively whilst St Mary's won both the men's and women's team events. Marathon results were extracted from the Virgin London Marathon with Philip Anthony (Canterbury Christ Church University) winning the men's event in 2:16.40 and Rosalind Kieran (University of London) taking the women's gold in 2: The Combined Events Championship did not take place as BUCS was unable to find a partner event from which to extract results. It is hoped this will be rectified for 2012/13. BADMINTON Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Bath dominated the league programme winning the men's and women's North and South Premier Leagues respectively both finishing undefeated. Leeds Met continued their dominance of the men's Championship defeating Loughborough 5-3 in a closely fought final. The women's Team Championships saw a reverse of the men's fixture as Loughborough upset the form book and avenged the two defeats in the league to snatch the Championship crown 5-3 from Leeds Met. In the trophy competition Loughborough 2nds (men) and Leeds Met (women) were victorious. The BUCS Badminton Individual Championships is now the UK's largest badminton tournament with 675 players competing in 719 matches. Anita Raj Kaur (Leeds Met) secured her fourth successive women's singles title and Harry Wright (Leeds Met) a record sixth consecutive men's doubles crown alongside Alex Fowler. There were also wins for Nathan D'Cruz (Brunel, men's singles), Alex Langley and Lauren Smith (Leeds Met, women's doubles), Peter Briggs and Samantha Ward (Loughborough, mixed doubles). BASKETBALL The Final 8's were once again one of the highlights of the BUCS Championships in Sheffield with the University of Worcester retaining their men's crown with an victory over Durham University. Leeds Met secured third place with Northumbria University in fourth. Durham dominated the women's Final 8's defeating Cardiff Metropolitan University in the final with Northumbria third and Edinburgh fourth. The league programme saw 185 men's and 128 women's teams competing in 51 leagues across the whole of the UK. Worcester and London South Bank won the men's Premier League North and South respectively losing just once in the regular season. Durham lost just twice on route to the women's Northern crown whilst Cardiff Met secured the Southern title. Loughborough defeated the University of Aberdeen in the men's Trophy final and Southampton Solent University beat Newcastle University in the women's competition. BOXING The BUCS Boxing Finals were held in the magnificent Octagon at the University of Sheffield. Entry numbers increased from the previous year with over 100 competitors taking part in three days of competition. The highlight of the competition saw Ryan Mulcahy, of Liverpool Hope University, retain his men's open class under 63.5kg title with a stoppage in the third round of his final. CANOE The BUCS Canoe Wild Water Racing Championships took place in North Yorkshire in November and saw Newcastle University win the Overall Team Championships triumphing against stiff competition from Loughborough, Durham and Nottingham Trent University who all had excellent competitors in most classes. The BUCS Canoe Slalom Championships took place at the newly renovated Teesside White Water Centre, with Nottingham Trent coming out on top in the Team Championships. BUCS would like to thank the Friends of Durham Canoe Club for all of their organisation and assistance in putting the events on so well. Hatfield Water Park, Doncaster, hosted the Canoe Polo competition when the University of Cambridge secured gold ahead of the University of Sheffield University and Durham in 2nd and 3rd place. 12 CLAY PIGEON The BUCS Clay Pigeon Shooting Championships were held at the West Midlands Shooting ground for the eleventh year in a row. Harper Adams University College won the men's Team Championship with the Royal Agricultural College and Cardiff University sharing second place, ahead of the University of Bath in bronze. Dave Kidner of Cardiff University won the men's Individual goal once again, with Alys Holland of Cambridge winning the women's Individual competition. In the men's and women's mixed Team Championships Harper Adams again took gold this time ahead of the University of St. Andrew's and Royal Agricultural College. CLIMBING The BUCS Climbing Championships continued as part of the BUCS Championships with 368 competitors taking part, improving on last year. The Championships was a great competition for the University of Leeds who won the mixed Team event. The men's Individual Championship was won by Imperial College London student Cheehan Weereratne who prevailed in a climb-off traverse eliminator with Louis Parkinson (University of Leeds). The women's Championship was won by Natalie Berry from the University of Edinburgh with a superb display that nudged her closest rival, Charlotte Kelly (University of Salford), in to silver also saw the formation of the first climbing SAG with Joe McReady appointed as Chair. CRICKET The BUCS Indoor Cricket Championships saw record numbers of teams competing in both the men's and women's competition. Cardiff Met defeated defending champions Coventry University on their way to the men's final at Lords where they conquered the University of Exeter by three wickets. In the women's final Loughborough avenged their defeat in last year's final by overcoming Durham in just 4.3 overs and without losing a wicket. The outdoor programme was decimated by the weather with less than half of matches taking place. This meant there has been no promotion or relegation from any league for the 2012/13 season. In a severely rain affected Premier League Loughborough emerged victorious winning all four of the matches they were able to play. The Championship final returned to the stunning Wormsley Cricket Ground for the second year in a row and it was the teams finishing 3rd and 4th in the league contesting the final. Cambridge MCCU retained the title thanks to a fabulous hundred from man of the match Ben Ackland with Durham settling for the runners up spot. In the women's Championship Loughborough overcame Durham on the Nursery Ground at Lords to retain their title and finish the season unbeaten having won the Northern Premier League as well. Exeter won the Southern Premier League. The trophy competitions were won by Leeds Met (men) and Birmingham (women). CYCLING A comprehensive BUCS Cycling Championship programme kicked off with the Hill Climb as Henry King of Leeds and the University of Derby's Sarah Byrne secured victory in the men's and women's races respectively. The highlight of the year was the Barefoot Wine Downhill Mountain Bike Championships which took place in Rheola, South Wales, with reigning champion Emyr Davis (Cardiff Met) successfully defending his gold in the closest of races, winning by seconds ahead of the University of Manchester's Jack Reading. Reigning women's champion Jess Stone (Worcester) also took gold, with a blisteringly quick championship run. Edinburgh took the men's team title with a solid all-round performance. The Cyclo-Cross Championships followed this, hosted by Durham University, with David Nichols (Loughborough) winning gold in the men's Individual event and Anna Buick (Manchester) winning the women's. In the team's races Edinburgh's men and the University of Manchester's women were victorious. The Track Championships took place at Newport Velodrome. Seb Pancratz from the University of Oxford won the men's Pursuit, while Anton Aro (University Of Wales, Newport) took the men's Kilo gold. The University of Central Lancashire had a strong showing winning the men's Points Race and Team Pursuit, while Kenneth Ayre (University of Glasgow) took the men's Individual Sprint. In the women's races the University of Birmingham'sCiara Horne won gold in the Pursuit and Eleanor Richardson (Manchester Metropolitan University) won the Sprint. Manchester Met won the Team Sprint, and Ciara Horne (Birmingham) won the Scratch Race. The Cross-Country Mountain Bike Championships took place at Birchall Golf Club. In the women's competition Carla Haines (UCP Marjons) took gold, with Jonathan Pybus (Loughborough) taking the men's title. The University of Bristol took the men's Team title, with Manchester reigning in the women's Team competition. In the Open 50km 3-up Team Time Trial Cambridge won the men's and women's titles. Ciara Horne of the University of Birmingham won gold in the women's 10m TT race and in the men's Wojciech Szlachta (Cambridge) prevailed. In the 25m TT the University of Cambridge and the University of Birmingham won the men's and women's Team Championships respectively. Nick Baker (Oxford Brookes) and Ciara Horne (Birmingham) won the Individual titles. In the Road Race Thomas Stewart from the University of Sheffield took gold. BUCS also welcomed Bill Thompson to join Paddy Hill on the Cycling SAG as Chair. EQUESTRIAN 140 teams took part in 36 regionalised mini leagues throughout the first two terms. The winning team from each league progressed to six regional rounds before the finals at Hartpury College in June. Qualifiers for the Championship finals were the University of Reading, Newcastle University, Writtle College, Bristol, University of Glasgow and Loughborough. Reading dominated the National finals winning the Team event overall as well the Team Showjumping and Dressage ahead of Newcastle second overall and Writtle third. Readings Mary Edmundson was the outstanding rider of the finals beating teammate Maddy Taylor into second place overall by winning both the Showjumping and Dressage. The Trophy was won by Bristol with Leeds (Team Dressage) and Bristol (Team Showjumping) taking home the other awards. FENCING The BUCS Fencing Individual Championships and Team Finals took place at the BUCS Championships. Cambridge came from third place in the Premier League South to win the men's Championship, defeating Manchester in the final. In the women's final Imperial College London ensured they finished the season with a 100% record as they overcame Edinburgh to retain their title. Durham narrowly failed to finish the season undefeated losing to Imperial in the Championship semi-final but could console themselves with going one step better than last year by winning the Northern Premier League. In the Individual Championships Imperial's Hannah Bryars secured her sixth straight Foil title and Kira Roberts (Durham) retained her Sabre crown whilst the only newcomer to the women's champions rostrum was Caitlin Chang from Sheffield Hallam. The men's Sabre gold medal went to Maiyuran Ratneswaren (Imperial) for the second year in succession. Edinburgh's Edmondo Riva became men's Foil champion whilst David Burnside (Cambridge) overcame the field in the men's Epee. 12 Annual Review 2011/12

13 FOOTBALL The BUCS Mars Championship Finals were held at Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace between Bath and Stirling University. Bath took home the coveted title with a 2-0 victory, their goals coming from Craig Mullen and Robin Nicholls. Amber Hughes was the hero in the women's final with a hat trick to help Loughborough to a 4-0 win against Hertfordshire. The men's Trophy was won by Loughborough 2nds who overcame a resilient University of Brighton 2nds whilst Durham defeated the University of Gloucestershire 4-2 in the women's competition. The BUCS Mars league programme saw 471 men's and 165 women's teams taking part in 102 leagues. In one of the tightest leagues in years last year's women's Championship finalists Northumbria University and Leeds Met fought to the last day of the season before Northumbria took the title by a single point. In the Southern Premier League Cardiff Met were undefeated in claiming the title from Bath. In the men's Southern Premier League University of the West of England Hartpury were undefeated for the second season in succession finishing 10 points clear of second placed University of Glamorgan. In the Northern Premier League Loughborough edged out Manchester by two points. FUTSAL The BUCS Mars Futsal Championship was held over two days as part of the BUCS Championships in Sheffield. Teesside University were the men's Championship winners with a tense 4-3 victory over Bath. The University of Lincoln's Josh Nodder finished as leading goal scorer with nine goals. In the women's competition Durham secured a dramatic extra time victory over Northumbria winning 4-2. The men's Trophy final was equally dramatic with Brighton forcing extra time with seconds remaining before running out 6-3 winners. Over 57 men's and 23 women's teams took part in the competition which continues to grow year on year. GAELIC FOOTBALL There was a further increase in the number of participants with new men's Gaelic Football teams registered. The BUCS Gaelic Football Championships finals were held as part of the BUCS Championships in March at Huddersfield. Liverpool Hope University were the victors in a closely fought encounter with St. Mary's. GOLF Stirling maintained their dominance of the BUCS Golf programme winning the Scottish League, Championship Team final and Individual Strokeplay finals in both the men's and women's events. In the Team finals Bournemouth University once again finished runners up to Stirling at the beautiful Ganton Golf Club. In the Trophy final Durham 1st ensured Bournemouth 3rd left empty handed with a 6-3 victory. In the league programme Bournemouth edged out the University of Exeter by a point in the Southern Premier League securing the title with a draw on the last day of the season. In the northern section Birmingham were undefeated on their way to the title with Loughborough eight points adrift. The Individual Strokeplay finals were held at stunning West Lancashire Golf Course for the second year in succession. Jack McDonald (Stilring), who went on to reach the semi final of the British Amateur Championship, held off teammate Darren Timms by one stroke to win his first title whilst Hannah McCook, also of Stirling, took advantage of a late slip by long time leader Charlotte Austwick (University of York) to win by one shot. GYMNASTICS The BUCS Gymnastics Championships were once again held at the Rushmoor Gymnastics Academy with nearly 200 gymnasts taking part. Loughborough's Louise Orchard took the women's Grade One title on day one, whilst Matthew Firth of Leeds Met won gold in the men's Championship for the second year a row. Loughborough edged Leeds Met to win the women's Team competition, but Leeds Met came back to take gold in the men's Team Championships. HOCKEY The culmination of the BUCS PwC Hockey competition saw a magnificent day's hockey played at Abbeydale Hockey Club as part of the BUCS Championships. The men's final was an absorbing affair with Durham and Exeter tied at 3-3 before man of the match Tom Carson scored Exeter's winner to spark wild celebrations from their loyal supporters. In the women's final Durham led 2-1 with seconds remaining as Birmingham fashioned a great chance to equalise but as the ball flew wide Durham were ensured of the gold medal. The trophy competitions were won by Newcastle (men) and Manchester (women). 271 men's and 278 women's teams entered the BUCS PwC hockey programme playing in 88 leagues. JUDO The BUCS Judo Championships were held at the Don Valley stadium as part of the BUCS Championships in Sheffield. Over 350 competitors took part over two days of competition with Anglia Ruskin University's men and the University of Bath's women retaining their Team titles. JUJITSU The BUCS Jujitsu championships ran as part of the Jitsu Foundation National Championships. It is one of the largest BUCS martial arts events with over 400 student entrants from over 50 institutions. This year's overall winner was Birmingham's Thomas Van Dongen with Simon Pickersgill (University of Leeds) and Francis Kennedy (University of Leeds) finishing in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The team competition was won by Swansea University. KARATE The BUCS Karate Championships were held over two days at Ponds Forge as part of the BUCS Championships in Sheffield. Edinburgh retained their Team title with Manchester, Sheffield Hallam and Middlesex University joint second. Manchester retained the Team Kata title whilst Edinburgh's women and Heriot-Watt University's men won the Team Kumite competitions. Special mention goes to Calum Robb, from Heriot Watt University who won the men's Senior Kumite (+84KG) and incredibly is now the nine times winner of the BUCS title. Annual Review 2011/12 13

14 KORFBALL The BUCS Korfball Championships took place at the Sugden Centre, Manchester, on the 10th - 11th March 2012 with the University of Nottingham once again reigning supreme with a dominant display in their group stage and going on the beat the University of St Andrews in the final. LACROSSE Durham maintained their dominance of the men's programme securing the Northern Premier League without losing a match for the second season in succession. They completed yet another unbeaten season by winning the Championship final 17-0 over Manchester. In the league Exeter retained their Southern Premier League title. The women's competition was exhilarating with Bristol pulling off the shock of the quarter finals by knocking out defending champions Durham before being knocked out in extra time in the semi finals by eventual champions Cambridge. Cambridge finished the season with a 100% record, winning every match to secure the Southern Premier league title whilst Birmingham ended up as Championship runners up having finished second to Durham in the Northern Premier League. MODERN BIATHLON & PENTATHLON This year's Modern Biathlon & Pentathlon Championships were held at Oxford University Sports Centre. In the women's Individual Pentathlon event the winner was Amelia Jobling from the University of Bath whilst in the men's Alex Fraser of Oxford University took gold. Team Pentathlon winners were the University of Edinburgh. The women's Individual Biathlon winner was Catherine Taylor of Gloucester University and the men's Individual Biathlon winner was Sam Petty, from the University of Birmingham. In the Team Biathlon competition Leeds Metropolitan University were the men's winners and the University of Birmingham emerged victorious. NETBALL Of the 391 teams participating in BUCS Netball, 19 more than last year, the University of Bath were the only team to go through the entire season unbeaten securing both the Southern Premier League and the Championship final. The latter was secured by beating defending champions Loughborough in the semi-final and then the 2010/11 runners up Leeds Met in an enthralling final. Captain Mia Ritchie secured the player of the match award. Leeds Met and Loughborough continued their battle for supremacy at the top of Northern Premier League with Leeds Met taking the title for the third year in a row by the narrowest of margins on goal difference after the head to head results were exactly equal. In the Trophy final Liverpool John Moores University followed up their 2nd place in Northern 1A by defeating Oxford in the final. ORIENTEERING This year's BUCS Orienteering Championships were held in Ulverston in the Lake District in March and organised in conjunction with Cambridge University Orienteering Club. In the men's Championships Hector Haines from the University of Edinburgh secured gold ahead of teammate Oleg Chepelin (silver) and Oxford University's Peter Hodkinson (bronze). Edinburgh were also victorious in the women's championships with Rebecca Harding winning gold ahead of silver medallist Anwen Darlington (University of Sheffield) and bronze medallist Cat Taylor (Edinburgh). In a dominant display the University of Edinburgh completed a clean sweep of titles winning both men's & women's Relay Championships. POOL Vauxhall Holiday Park, Great Yarmouth was treated to a fantastic display of pool as the University of York emerged victorious in the BUCS-UPC Eight-ball Pool Team Championship with an emphatic performance against Edge Hill University in the final. The BUCS UPC Eight ball Pool Individual Championship, with almost 450 entrants, was fiercely contested culminating with Rhys Williams (Edge Hill) defeating Thomas Gaughan (Exeter) with a pulsating display in the final. RIFLE The BUCS Short Range Postal League finals were once again held as part of the BUCS Championships in Sheffield. The winner of the men's Individual Championship was the University of Aberdeen's Barron whilst teammate Copland won the women's Individual event. The Team Championship also ended in gold for Aberdeen, with Newcastle University and the University of Southampton in silver and bronze respectively. Southampton dominated the BUCS Small Bore Championships winning men's and women's Individual gold and topping this off with Team gold. The BUCS Fullbore Championships was held concurrently with the National Rifle Association's Imperial Meeting in July and saw Durham University take gold in the Team Champsionships ahead of Oxford University in second and Southampton in third. The men's Individual Championship was won with a fantastic shoot from William Broad (Durham University). In the women's Individual Championship Southampton's Holly McCollough took gold ahead of Hannah Pugsley (Exeter) and Hannah Bennet (Bristol). ROWING The BUCS PwC Rowing Regatta remains the largest regatta in Europe and was once again held at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. Loughborough topped the medal table mainly due to an excellent showing in the sculling events whilst Durham's domination of the Victor Ludorum continued. The indoor rowing programme continues to grow with over 900 competitors taking part in the competition across 11 events hosted by university clubs. The gold medallists were Graeme Thomas (Manchester, openweight men), Georgie Hazell (Reading, openweight women), Ben Mitchell (Nottingham, lightweight men) and Gemma Hall (Newcastle, lightweight women). The BUCS PwC Smallboats head attracted 122 entries at Boston Rowing club in conjunction with the first GB Rowing Trials of the season. The BUCS PwC 4s and 8s Head was once again held at Peterborough Rowing Club. Poor weather made conditions very difficult and led to the cancellation of the beginner's events. 15 RUGBY FIVES The BUCS Rugby Fives Championships took place at Marlborough College, Wiltshire, and in a dominant display Loughborough's Luke Thomson beat Ed Kay (Cambridge) 15-9, 15-6 in the singles final. In a dramatic doubles final Durham's Peter Hanton & Alex Griffiths secured victory over holders Cambridge's Ed Kay & Tom Chase, by 15 9, RUGBY LEAGUE In the BUCS Rugby League Trophy Final Northumbria beat Edge Hill 34-4 to win the gold and Sheffield Hallam triumphed over the University of Glamorgan in the BUCS Rugby League Shield final. Leeds Met and Loughborough both emerged victorious in their respective Championship semi-finals and faced each other in the final at Headingley Carnegie Stadium, home of Leeds Rhinos, in a match that was screened exclusively live on Premier Sports. Loughborough were hoping to avenge last season's bitter defeat as Pat Toft's try in the dying seconds allowed Leeds to run away with the victory. It wasn't to be as Leeds Met had Loughborough on the back foot from kick off, roared on by a large local crowd an early brace of tries gave Leeds Met command of the game. Loughborough showed determination but the result was never really in doubt as Leeds Met secured their fifth successive win over Loughborough in their remarkable seven year reign as BUCS Champions. Final score: Leeds Met Carnegie 29 Loughborough 12. This season also saw the first steps taken towards the forming of the first Rugby League Sports Advisory Group. RUGBY UNION 293 men's and 88 women's teams entered the BUCS Rugby Union league and cup programme. Durham maintained their unbeaten league record for the second consecutive season in winning the Northern Premier League. Bath were crowned Premier League champions in the south ahead of UWE Hartpury in second place. It was UWE Hartpury though that dominated the Championship with commanding wins in each round culminating in a victory over Durham at Twickenham Stadium. The women's competition saw Cardiff Met reassert their authority winning every match in the season to claim the Southern Premier League for the eighth season in succession and reclaim the Championship title recording a 30 points to 5 victory over with old rivals Leeds Met at Twickenham. In the Trophy competition Newcastle (women) completed an unbeaten season defeating University College London in the final whilst Durham 2nds defeated the University of the West of England 2nds in a tightly contested final at the Richmond Athletic Ground. SAILING The BUCS Fleet Racing Championships were held in glorious, if cold, November sunshine at Mount Batten Centre, with force 3 4 winds throughout the weekend's racing. Charlie Poyner & Lottie Richardson representing the University of Bristol won a close battle to be Firefly Fleet Champions. Chris Matthews & Rob Thomas from the University of Plymouth in their 49er pretty much dominated the Handicap Fleet. Stuart Godwin of Bristol won the Laser Championship for a second year. An RS Fleet was introduced into the Championships this year. Andy Shaw & Rosie Sibthorp of Southampton in a 200 were the clear Champions. There was a close battle for the Fleet Team Trophy, which is awarded to the highest performing team. With only two points dividing them, Bristol University, which dominated two of the fleets, were finally victorious over the local team, Plymouth University. In the BUCS Team Racing Championship Finals Southampton A took gold, with Oxford University and Southampton B in silver and bronze respectively. The BUCS Yachting Championships saw Exeter University take gold, with Portsmouth and Plymouth University in silver and bronze respectively. Bristol University won gold in the Match Racing Championships, with Southampton and Portsmouth taking silver and bronze respectively. SNOOKER The BUCS Snooker Championships returned to the superb Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds as part of the BUCS Championships in March. In the Team Championship Cardiff University won the title for a second year in a row with local team, the University of Leeds, in second and Southampton in third. The Individual Championship was won by local competitor Dan Wormersley (University of Leeds) ahead of Manchester's John Fryer in silver and Rhys Carpenter (Cardiff) picking up bronze. BUCS would like to thank the Snooker SAG of Patrick McWilliams, Brian Keenan, and Jamie Thompson for their help and expertise in running the Championships. SNOWSPORTS The BUCS Dryslope Snowsports Championships took place again at Hillend, Edinburgh in November. In the women's Snowboard Giant Slalom Carla McGlynn of Edinburgh Napier University took the gold, whilst Andrew Logsdail (Birmingham) won the men's Snowboard Giant Slalom competition. Calum Henderson (Edinburgh Napier University) did fantastically well in claiming both the men's Ski Slalom and the men's Giant Ski Slalom titles in a very competitive field, whilst Worcester's Charlotte Gould won the women's Ski Giant Slalom Competition and Elouise Greenhaigh (University of Edinburgh) won the women's Ski Slalom title. The BUCS Alpine Championships were held in Saalbach, Hinterglemm in the Austrian Alps where the University of Strathclyde's Jennifer Osborne won gold in the women's Snowboard Giant Slalom and Will Harris from UWE team took the men's gold. In the Giant Slalom Eilidh Mcleod (Aberdeen) edged out Franki Simonds (Bristol) to take the women's title, whilst another member of the Aberdeen team, Kenny Morton took the men's gold medal. Eilidh Mcleod and Franki Simmonds battled it out for top spot in the BUCS Female Slalom, with Mcleod prevailing once again, whilst in the men's event the University of Buckingham's Sam Wyer stole the show to win the title. SQUASH The men's Premier League saw Birmingham finish unbeaten to take the title away from Nottingham who finished second. Leeds Met secured victory in the women's Premier League winning the title thanks to a victory on count back over Bristol. The same two teams contested the Championship final at Abbeydale, which finished in the same outcome, both sides won two matches apiece with Leeds Met triumphing by eight games to six. The men's competition featured UWE who boasted the top three players from the individual championships. They swept all before them to record their first Championship title with defending champions Birmingham finishing in the runners up position. Record numbers entered the Individual Championships hosted by the University of Birmingham and Edgbaston Priory. For the first time the competition included seven men's grades and three women's. Mohammed Elshorbagy, world number seven (UWE), retained his title defeating brother and teammate Marwan in the final. Former world champion Vanessa Atkinson (Leeds Met) retained her title in the women's event defeating teammate Kirsty McPhee who reached her first final. Annual Review 2011/12 15

16 SURFING Surfers and spectators enjoyed a weekend of impressive waves and glorious autumn sunshine at Fistral Beach, Newquay for the 2011 BUCS Barefoot Wine Surf Championships. The competition was an outstanding success with a record number of surfers taking part. The men's final saw defending champion Gordon Fontaine (Bournemouth University) battle it out with University of Plymouth trio Matt Rodwell, Sam Coad and Jonathan Waugh. Fontaine saved his best performance for the final, earning a near-perfect score from the judges to secure gold. Newquay resident Holly Donnelly (Plymouth) also impressed, beating off fierce competition in the women's final from Exeter's Rosie Ellis & Jenny Bryant and teammate Jen Head to clinch the women's Trophy. In the team events, Plymouth took home both the men's trophy and women's trophy. SWIMMING For the first time in its history the BUCS Short Course Championships had access to two pools doubling the capacity for the event. Over 3000 entries were accepted and once again Loughborough came out on top in the team events with Bath moving up one place into second. Emma Hollis (Loughborough) broke two Paralympic world records and Bath student & Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson swam one of the ten Championship Records set during the event, his in the 200m breaststroke. The Long Course Championships were also held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield where Loughborough swimmers Laurent Carnol and Rachel Lefley were awarded the top performing male and female awards respectively for breaking three of the six championship records to fall between them. Loughborough won the team events in a fitting tribute to head coach Ian Armiger who departs after 15 years at the helm. Loughborough retained the championship crown at the team finals in Sheffield from Edinburgh in 2nd. Bath 2nds took the Trophy with Cardiff Met winning the Shield. TABLE TENNIS The University of Manchester defeated defending champions Nottingham Trent en route to winning the women's Championship final against Southampton. The men's Championship was won by Loughborough who won a tremendous final overcoming Nottingham 9-8 at the EIS, Sheffield as part of the BUCS Championships. Nottingham Trent won the men's Trophy with the London School of Economics taking the women's competition. The Individual Championships were again hosted by the University of Nottingham. Nottingham Trent proved successful sweeping the board with gold medals in every event. The most successful player was Emma Vickers who won 3 gold medals. Nottingham Trent's gold medal winners were Sean Cullen (men's singles), Emma Vickers (women's singles), Sean Cullen and Chris Doran (men's doubles), Caroline Hallows and Emma Vickers (women's doubles) and Emma Vickers and Chris Doran (mixed doubles). TENNIS Stirling men enjoyed an excellent season winning both the Northern Premier League and Championship title ensuring Loughborough were runners up for the 2nd season in a row. The Southern Premier League was exceptionally close with Bath improving on last season's 2nd place to take the title thanks to an 8-4 victory away at Bournemouth. Exeter finished in third just three points behind. Bath women followed up the success of the men comfortably winning the Southern Premier League and beating Loughborough in the Championship final having edged out Northern Premier League winners Durham in a semi-final tie break shoot out. Stirling and Durham triumphed in the men's and women's individual championships respectively. Nick Rosenzweig (Stirling) beat teammate Joesph Gill in the men's final whilst Gill teamed up with Rihard Emulins to secure the doubles gold. In the women's events it was the Durham pair of Reka Zsilinszka and Kseniia Tokarieva contesting the final with Zsilinszka winning The two then came together in the doubles to take on teammates Sally Pearson and Lucy Scott in the final where Pearson and Scott came out on top. TENPIN BUCS were delighted to announce a new Tenpin Sports Advisory Group with Dan Vanniasingham as Chair and Darren Ellis as Competition and Event Consultant. In the BUCS Tenpin Championships, held in Nottingham, Portsmouth's Jess Davidson took gold in the ladies Individual Championship with Rachael McKenzie (Leeds Met) in silver and Huierh Tay (Imperial) taking bronze. In the ladies Team Championship Portsmouth secured another gold ahead of Imperial in silver and Nottingham in bronze. In the men's events the Individual Championship was won by Manchester's Lewis Brown, ahead of Jamie Cunningham (Glamorgan) in silver and Johnathan Spivey (Portsmouth) bronze. Loughborough won the men's Team Championship with Warwick in 2nd and Sheffield in 3rd place. TRAMPOLINING The Trampolining Sports Advisory Group had a change in personnel with Oliver Munro coming on board as SAG Chair, with Jake Bailey remaining as SAG consultant following a successful period as chair during which the sport has grown in HE. The BUCS Trampolining Championships took place at the University of the West of England's Frenchay Campus in March following successful regional qualifying rounds at Southampton, Nottingham and Edinburgh. The University of the West of England won the men's Team competition, from the University of Glasgow in second and Cambridge in third. In the women's Team the University of Sheffield took gold with Bath taking silver and UWIC bronze. In the Individual events the men's Grade 1 was won by Nick Davies (UWE) with Philip Birkett (Kent) in 2nd and Lewis Bartlett (Bournemouth) in 3rd. The women's Grade 1 was won by Sheffield's Bryony Page ahead of Natasha Carter (Leeds) in silver and Kirsty Briggs (UWIC) in bronze. TRIATHLON The BUCS Triathlon programme consists of three main events, the Duathlon, the Sprint and the Standard Distance, which in partnership with Triathlon England also saw a new Super Sprint race for those new to the sport. The BUCS Duathlon Championships took place at Castle Coombe in November, where Luke Watson of Loughborough University won gold in the men's Championship with Alex Matchett from the University of Bristol in 2nd and Sam Wade of UWIC in 3rd. In the women's Championship Lois Rosindale (Leeds Met) took gold with Vicky Johnston of Loughborough in silver and Oxford's Sophia Saller collecting bronze. Loughborough and Leeds Met also dominated the team competition, taking the men's and women's Team gold respectively. The Sprint Championships, which took place at St.Mary's, Calne, were again dominated by Loughborough's Luke Watson, winning the Men's Championship, with Alex Matchett (Bristol) again in silver and Doug Hall (University of Bath) in bronze. The women's Championship saw Natalie Milne from the University of Stirling take the spoils with Eli Thorogood of Loughborough in 2nd and Carol Bridge of Cardiff University in 3rd. Loughborough University took gold in both the men's and women's Team Sprint Championships. Loughborough dominated the Standard Distance event, held at Holme Pierrepoint Nottingham, with a one two in the men's Individual Championships (Josh Cardwell and Luke Watson) and gold in the women's Individual event going to Victoria Johnston. 17 ULTIMATE The BUCS Indoor Ultimate Championships took place in November in Coventry, West Midlands where the University of Exeter won a tense final against last year's bronze medallists the University of Manchester, who had to settle for the silver ahead of the University of Dundee in bronze. The BUCS Outdoor Ultimate Championships held in Manchester in April saw the University of Sussex win the gold medal once again with Bristol taking silver, and Edinburgh bronze. VOLLEYBALL Leeds Metropolitan University retained both the men's and women's Championships in dominant fashion defeating Warwick and Bath respectively in the finals and dropping just one set between them during the Final 8s. Northumbria won the men's Trophy with Durham winning the women's. 93 men's and 83 women's teams took part in the competition which included tier one league wins for Leeds Met, Cambridge, Bournemouth, Kings College London and Edinburgh Napier in the women's leagues and Leeds Met, Bournemouth, Imperial, Edinburgh and Warwick in the men's. WAKEBOARDING The Wakeboarding Championships were not held in 2011/12 WATER POLO Bristol gained revenge over Manchester following last season's defeat to take the men's Championship crown with a dominant finals performance. Leeds triumphed 10-7 over Cardiff in the women's competition as they took the title at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. Sheffield Hallam's women's team won the Trophy competition with victory over Warwick whilst Sheffield won the men's Trophy with a win over Bath by just one goal. The men's Shield was won by Cardiff Met who defeated Northumbria in the final. WINDSURFING Southampton Solent's Sam Sills won the men's Championships at the BUCS Windsurfing Championships, at Calshot Activity Centre in April, with Kirsty O'Callaghan (Exeter) winning the women's Championships. 18 INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES The main focus of 2011/12 was the series of single sport FISU World University Championships that take place every two years, and the FISU Forum. This year has also seen the consultation and launch of a new BUCS International Strategy for , and a research project will shortly be published: Placing HE in the Performance Pathway: A Performance Analysis of the Summer Universiade as an advocacy and promotional tool for the competition elements. WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 (WUCS) The 2012 series of Championships saw BUCS enter teams representing Great Britain (GB) into 15 sports. The 15 GB teams, composed of 118 students (62 male and 56 female) from 47 BUCS Universities, were delivered in close collaboration with the performance directors from the respective National Governing Bodies (NGB's) to compete at the following WUCs. The 2012 series of Championships were very successful for the Great Britain teams, two individual and five team medals (to date) represent an amazing 59% of athletes achieving a medal. Highlights included a gold medal winning team performance at the inaugural Netball WUCs, and double gold's in the men's and women's Rugby Sevens. Entries in both sports were the direct result of BUCS led close collaboration between the home nations NGBs. Other notable successes include a silver medal by Palmer Cup team member David Booth in the Golf, where the men's team also won silver. There was also a silver medal for the 2009 BUCS Sportsman of the Year Calum Robb in Karate, with the men's Kata team also collecting a historic first-ever bronze medal for any representative team from the UK. The BUCS International Programme is kindly supported by the National Governing Bodies of sport in GB and the Home Nations, TASS, and countless volunteers all of whom are essential to the successful delivery of these events. 18 Annual Review 2011/12

19 11TH FISU FORUM - 'UNIVERSITY SPORT A PLATFORM FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT' Taipei City, Chinese Taipei, March 2012 The biennial FISU Forum welcomed 207 students and professional staff from 59 of the countries in membership of FISU to discuss contemporary issues in university sport, to compare the university sport programmes and provision within different countries, as well as to discuss the role of FISU and its sporting programme. Great Britain were represented by Peter White a student at Sheffield University, Danielle Giles a student sabbatical and Vice President for Sport & Healthy Living at Bangor University and Bill Thompson Head of Sport and Leisure at City University London, were amongst the most active and engaged of the national university sports federations in attendance. Danielle was chosen from the student delegates to present to the Forum on the topic of University sport as fertile ground for leadership development, Bill presented on Strategic planning for eco-friendly university sport using City University as a case-study, and Peter led a Forum workshop on the subject of Sportsmanship as a platform for lifelong development. EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES SPORTS ASSOCIATION (EUSA) EUSA (European Universities Sports Association) events are Champions League competitions for universities and allow the top universities in the BUCS Competition to compete against the best universities in Europe. This year saw the inception of the EUSA Games, a new multi-sport format that will now alternate annually with the programme of single sport EUSA Championships. The inaugural EUSA Games took place in Cordoba, Spain, July, with 2,583 participants in 253 teams from 151 universities of 32 different countries. Three British teams qualified through BUCS domestic competition to attend; the 2012 BUCS men's Fustal champions Teeside University, University of Nottingham's men's table tennis team and Stirling University's men's Tennis team. The standout performance came from Stirling University who went on to win the Bronze medal at the Games. 20 SPORTS DEVELOPMENT In July this year BUCS received confirmation that Sport England would continue to fund the work of the Sport Development Team beyond our existing funding agreement into 2013 and beyond. This is a genuine demonstration of the strong relationship that has continued to grow between BUCS and Sport England, resulting in a tangible extension to the BUCS service to members. Last year saw 10m, Active Universities support over 40 participation projects in the sector. This year saw the new Sport England investment strategy ring fencing 25m of NGB whole sport plan investment for delivery within the sector as well as mention of a possible Active Universities 2 in BUCS relationship with the FA also continues to deliver additional resource to the sector, with two funded posts within the Sport Development Team delivering football specific support and interventions that complement the other outputs of the department. Engagement with University Vice Chancellors has been a major success of 2011/12 with the reports produced during UUK Universities Week, demonstrating the broad impact of HE Sport. This profile and engagement led to the Burgess Implementation Steering Group approving a BUCS proposal for the inclusion of Sport within the new Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR). The HEAR, which details each graduate's achievements (both academic and non-academic) whilst at university, is currently being used by over 80 institutions, and a BUCS task and finish group have produced guidance notes to support them to include sport. NGB RELATIONSHIPS has seen the sport development relationships with National Governing Bodies (NGBs) continue to develop, the team are now working extremely closely with 21 NGBS in order to support them and demonstrate the growth achievable in HE. BUCS Sport Development relationships with NGBs support the strategic planning, development of tools and interventions and the brokering of relationships with institutions to deliver increased participation across the HE sector. The first ever BUCS NGB Practical Showcase was hosted in Sheffield's Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and witnessed eight NGBs demonstrate their products for higher education. This event offered Golf, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Rugby Union, Cricket, Tennis, Fencing and Rounders the opportunity to deliver their participation products to an audience of HE staff. BUCS NGB Showcase Event Over 40 new NGB-HEI relationships facilitated 5 new NGB products developed in partnership with BUCS and HEIs 21 NGBS currently working in partnership with BUCS to grow participation in HE The Sport Development team also played an instrumental part in the planning stages of NGBs whole sport plans , through meetings, feedback and support from colleagues within the HE sector. This engagement has extended the number of NGBs that are prioritising HE within their WSP submission, demonstrating the increasing profile of the HE sector within the national sporting landscape, and our role as key partners for delivery. The BUCS Sport Development team's valuable support, advice and guidance has been integral to the work of England Golf in the HE Sector. Utilising BUCS expertise we have been able to develop our first higher education strategy, whilst attendance at BUCS professional development events has enhanced the delivery of golf initiatives across the sector. 20 Annual Review 2011/12

21 MEMBER ENGAGEMENT AND SUPPORT has seen the BUCS Sport Development team increase the level of support available to HEIs around social participation, workforce, intra mural sport, coaching and volunteering, community partnerships, employability and club development. The Inaugural increasing participation day, held in January 2012 at Sheffield Hallam University was attended by over 80 delegates from 44 institutions. Workshop content included intra mural sport, engaging international students, NGB participation products, community partnerships, the impact of active universities and marketing participation opportunities to students. The event facilitated the sharing of good practice between HEIs allowing delegates to gather new ideas on how to increase participation opportunities at their own institution. Member institutions have received tailored support to improve development planning, committee training and management of student sports clubs. BUCS has assisted HEIs to increase intra mural provision for students through identifying new partnerships, formats and resources appropriate to the HE sector, such as Mars Just Play. Understanding the diversity of sporting provision across the HE sector has allowed appropriate support and good practice to be identified and shared. Examples have included the creation of new club development resources, introducing relevant participation products from national partners and assisting Active Universities co-ordinators in establishing social sporting opportunities for students and increasing their workforce capacity. 16 HEIs received support and guidance on club development initiatives 20 HEIs received support in developing social participation and intra mural sport programmes All 42 Active Universities funded programmes have received support from BUCS 19 Mars Just Play centres hosted on HEI sites engaging over 1600 participants Supported 17 HEI applications to the new FA Small sided development fund for a total of over 50,000 In order to accomplish a greater understanding of the sector's workforce needs BUCS formed a Workforce and Coaching Advisory Group. Members of HEI staff sit on the group with BUCS and representatives from key national partners such as sports coach UK and Skills Active. The group has significantly contributed to shaping BUCS focus areas regarding Workforce Development and have assisted with the planning of the BUCS Coaching and Workforce Development Day in February at Southampton Solent University. Delegates attended workshops that addressed topics including coach competency, official's development pathways and guidance from The John Lewis Partnership on the role of HE sport in enhancing student employability. Working strategically within 'Focus Counties' BUCS Football Development Team has been successful in developing new robust partnerships between HEI'S and County Football Associations which has significantly increased the number of opportunities available to students to play football. In addition coaching and referee hubs have been established in each 'Focus County' based on HEI sites which aim to provide student coaches and referees with qualifications, CPD, mentoring and meaningful work placements within community settings. 22 BUCS has offered and identified opportunities and placements for students to develop their employability and experience. Work placement roles have been built into BUCS Sports Events such as the Surfing event in Newquay and BUCS Championships in Sheffield. The BUCS Football Student Management group established this year offers six students the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in football development, delivering the inaugural Football Futures Student Conference. Through working with our NGB partners BUCS has assisted with the development of student activator programmes. NGB activators are now deployed across the HE sector impacting the delivery of participation programmes in sports such as Volleyball, Badminton, Cricket and Football. BUCS continues to support volunteer programmes within institutions and across the HE sector such as the BUCS Football Futures programme now with over 300 registered volunteers nationally. In addition BUCS has supported institutions to develop coach education programmes, access funding for workforce development and broker relationships with national partners. 11 HEI's from 7 BUCS regions represented on the Workforce & Coaching Advisory Group 14 HEI's received direct support and consultation on their volunteer and workforce development programmes BUCS Football Futures Student Conference attended by 60 students, all gaining professional qualification 311 students registered on BUCS Football Futures have delivered over 12,000 hours of volunteering PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENTS This year BUCS delivered a comprehensive professional development programme, including a series of events specifically for HEI staff with a sport development remit. This year's calendar was expanded from one sport development event (in 2010/11) to five. New events included the Increasing Participation Development Day, NGB Showcase, Football Development Conference and the Football Futures student conference. 300 delegates attended BUCS sport development events, from 70 institutions 98% of attendees (81 feedback responses) indicated that they found the event beneficial to their role and development The experience I have gained through being part of Football Futures was absolutely amazing and it gave me lots to talk about at my recent successful interview with the Kent County FA. I have no doubt what so ever that being part of BUCS Football Futures has really helped me to gain my first full time job in the sport I love. 23 DISABILITY SPORT has been a productive year for disability sport at BUCS, embedding through strategy and planning disability sport into the BUCS programme for the years ahead. The first key outcome this year has been the development of the first ever BUCS strategy for growing and developing disability sport across the Higher Education sector, 'Into Inclusion'. Led by the BUCS Disability Sport Steering Group, extensive consultation with members and partners since September 2011 has gone into producing this new strategy that maps out the development of disability sport over the next 5 years. Completing this consultation and strategy development process secured an additional three years funding from HEFCE to support the BUCS National Disability Sport Officer post. The second key outcome has been building on the success of last year's sports competition opportunities for disabled students. For the second year in succession disability entries were accepted for all short and long course swimming with entries nearly doubling from 8 to 15. Disabled athletes also participated in archery and sailing. With the BUCS Outdoor Athletics Championships taking place at the Olympic Stadium it proved impossible to integrate disability events into the event this year, however it is anticipated that this will return to next year's outdoor programme. Next year development plans include the integration of disability events within swimming, athletics and indoor rowing Most recently BUCS have submitted a funding application to the Sport England themed funding round for inclusive sport. Consultation workshops were hosted at Nottingham University and at BUCS National Conference in Exeter to engage member institutions in developing an application. The BUCS application included interventions to support the development of: Targeted support mechanisms for identified universities to work with all disabled student services on campus to develop and market sporting opportunities. New targeted and inclusive participation opportunities for disabled students to engage in on campus Increased competitive opportunities with BUCS national programme for disabled students to engage in national competition Training opportunities for students and staff to develop a workforce to deliver additional opportunities. A positive outcome from this funding process could result in investment being drawn down in April 2013 for delivery to start there after. Annual Review 2011/12 23

24 REGIONS & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Since its inception BUCS's vision has been to 'enhance the student experience through sport' and in 2012 the Olympics, the introduction of fees and the emphasis on employability has guided and influenced the work of Advisory Group and impacted on the agendas of the regions and nations. To support our members we have also offered a range of professional development and networking opportunities in order to share best practice and continue to work with external partners to assist us in achieving our vision. ADVISORY GROUP The Advisory Group is a key link between the BUCS office and the members, comprising of the elected staff and student officers and the staff and student chairs from each of the regions and home nations. The group meets four times per year and outcomes included support for a BUCS Commercial Policy in relation to alcohol sponsorship, recommendation to adopt the Sports Criteria and opportunity for new sports to be considered. REGIONS & NATIONS BUCS members operate under nine English regions, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the majority are now meeting regularly, providing support and best practice. In 2012 we have committed to improving our support and presence at these meetings and assist with regional engagement and development. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 'Increasing value from sport' and 'Preparing for 2012' were the themes of the two successful Development Days and the variety of sessions appealed to sabbaticals, administrators and operational staff from university sports departments. Next year our aim is to further develop this offer by working in conjunction with the Sports Development Team at BUCS. BUCS has continued to support the work of the Senior Managers Professional Network feedback from and support for the events, which address the broader influences impacting on the HE sector and sport, has been positive. This year's conference was held at the University of Exeter and established a new benchmark for the event. The newly opened Forum superbly accommodated an extensive and interesting programme and many a delegate regrets not recording the inspirational and thought provoking keynote from the University's Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Steve Smith. In addition we have worked with the Complete University Guide and Times Good University Guide to provide prospective students with updated information on the sporting offer at individual universities in relation to facilities, participation opportunities, competition and performance. Our work with Quest & NBS has continued and will develop further over the next 12 months and we hope that recent developments with the FIA and the support of conference sponsors StarTrac will be the catalyst for the re-emergence of the Health & Fitness Network. 24 Annual Review 2011/12

25 COMMERCIAL, COMMUNICATIONS & MARKETING The profile of higher education sport over the course of the 2011/12 season has grown significantly both in and out of the sector. The BUCS Visa Outdoor Athletics Championships, as part of the London Prepares series of test events for the Olympic Games, provided a truly global platform for BUCS to showcase the contribution that higher education sport makes to the Olympics. Through working with Universities UK and the Universities Week campaign and investing in PR support, BUCS was able to raise the profile not only of the organisation but importantly the profile of our member institutions. Outside of the 60,000 spectators that cheered on competing institutions, over 62 pieces of positive national coverage were achieved across broadcast, print and online supported by astounding levels or regional, local and social media activity. Official communications have increased to reflect the growing remit of BUCS. BUCS Sport Business captures the significant amount of activity that takes places on sports development and across our professional networks and has proven popular with over 2000 subscribers in the first year. Readership of all BUCS corporate communications has grown, with social media numbers further reflecting the appetite for news, views, images and video that exist within the sector. Video content has been a particular focus with our partners Red Bull launching the BUCS High Flyers series, delivering viewing figures in the hundreds of thousands. BUCScore one of the largest fixtures and results platforms in the world provides an excellent digital platform for higher education sport, underpinning and drawing in nearly 150,000 unique visits to the website a month during peak periods. Yet more work has taken place with BUCScore to integrate financial services, supporting our members through direct communications with students and general upgrades, responding to our members in order to support the on-going growth of student sport. Record numbers attended the 2011/12 annual conference at the University of Exeter and the BUCS Awards Dinner. The exhibition, as part of conference, was also attended by more commercial organisations and NGBs than ever before and with Star Trac as conference headline sponsor, Endsleigh associate sponsor and University Business magazine as the media partner, demonstrating the value of the BUCS network coming together in one venue. Commercially the market continues to be a challenging one, however a few new partners have been added and our portfolio of brands and partners, with closer management, have been challenged this season to really help BUCS deliver more for students at key events such as surfing, mountain biking, cricket and football. BUCS also enjoyed a growth in attendance to a number of focus and ticketed events, with marketing reaching more institutions, students and public than ever before. Additional commercial investment and maintaining the profile of student sport will be the focus for the 12/13 season. Annual Review 2011/12 25

26 A LOOK AHEAD TO THE 2012/13 BUCS SEASON BUCS will deliver and continue to improve the student experience across all sports programmes through reviewing the delivery mechanisms both at events, online and the integration of sponsors activity and marketing support. With large numbers of members already running teams and significant player numbers within Higher Education BUCS welcomes American Football into the sporting programme for the 12/13 season. Focus events for BUCS in the 12/13 season will include two new multisport events, grouping together individual finals at the BUCS GATORADE NATIONALS MMXIII and team finals at BUCS BIG WEDNESDAY. This concept will bring together around 6000 students for individual finals making it one of the largest multi-sport events in the world and for team finals this will deliver more spectators and atmosphere than ever before. BUCS will continue to integrate disability sport into the BUCS programme as outlined by the new disability strategy Into Inclusion is a World University Games year with Kazan in Russia hosting the Summer Universiade. BUCS will be sending a delegation to represent Great Britain and continue the promotion of the benefits and competitive standards of the games to members and national governing bodies through the launch of an impact report in 2012 'Placing HE in the Performance Pathway'. Underpinning the competitive framework is the on-going work of the BUCS Sport Development Team funded by Sport England, funding that has been confirmed for a further three years. Higher Education is the only sector in the Community Sport Directorate that has demonstrated measurable growth and BUCS Sports Development Team will work to build on this success into the 12/13 season. The role of BUCS during this new strategy period will be to facilitate a growth in HE student participation through working closely with National Governing Bodies and members to deliver the best and most suitable offer for students around sport and activity. The profile of student sport, BUCS and our member institutions hit an all-time high in the 11/12 season, achieved through delivering high profile events, quality sporting performances and an increased investment in BUCS public relations. BUCS will look to maintain organisational and member profile using the benefits of sport to employability as a template for media engagement, a campaign that will also reflect a BUCS commissioned piece of research. BUCS will continue its commitment to sourcing and activating commercial partnerships and the value and cash investment that they can provide for student sport. The 11/12 season benefitted from a wide range of commercial sponsors helping BUCS enhance both student and members experience across sports events and our annual conference. 12/13 will see the continuation and renewal with commercial partners who have been consistent supporters of student sport and some new additions, whose investment due to the nature of BUCS, as a not for profit business, goes straight back into student sport. At the heart of our strategic direction are the BUCS Professional Networks. In the 12/13 season BUCS will work more closely with this wide range of professional staff in growing a stronger dialogue and consultative process whilst enhancing their experience at meetings, conferences and supporting the development of challenging and informative agendas. The challenges are clear and the potential significant for the 12/13 season at BUCS.
