3 President s Report Hi folks, Thought I had better get pen to paper. One important message, there has been 2 shooting fatalities this year so be vigilant and remind yourselves of Rule No 4 of the Firearms Safety Code: Positively identify your target The juniors have had their prize giving with Vaughn Mitchell awarded Junior Hunter of the Year and the best.22 shot going to Regan Leahy. Well done to both of you. The Waikaremoana trip went ahead on the 14th, 15th & 16th of September. The report back was that no animals were shot but was a good trip anyway. We have had a good number of names put forward for the Range Officers training 12 in all. Good on you lads. The club is planning some walk in trips, will keep you posted. Don t forget those on the Kaweka fly in need to pay up by 8th October to book your spot. For those who didn t know DOC is planning to shut down 50% of tracks and huts in the Ruahines. There have been several meetings in Palmerston North with DOC. The area manager from Ongaonga presented himself at a meeting at the Hastings Deerstalkers Club which a number of us from Napier attented and put forward our views. They are trying to get a working group formed to work with DOC. There was a meeting in P/Nth on Monday night (17th Sept), so hope for some feedback. Full notes on DOC website apparently. Anyway that s all for now, Your President, John 3
4 In Brief Club Range Shoot The club will be having a range shoot on October 14th. Come sight your rifles in, have a crack at some longer ranges, get some practice in for the inter-club Taruarau Shoot (1st weekend of November). The club chronograph will be on hand for anyone who wishes to clock what their rounds are doing. Shooting will be followed by a BBQ and refreshments. 9am start., NZ Guns subscription up for grabs for F Class Shoot (200,300,400m) also junior Swazi Prize shoot. The range entrance is approx. 1.7km up Puketitiri Road from the Church Road/Prebenson Drive roundabout - on the left just past Poraiti Road. Look for the deer and range flag. DoC Stoat Lines Ken Mills (DoC Ongaonga) is after some volunteers to monitor and bait sections of their stoat trap line in the northern end of the Ruahines. This is not a case of saving money by getting volunteers to do the job, rather there is NO money at present to get it done. Without volunteer help the traps will simply sit idle. You can contact Ken if you are interested at his office on , mobile on or via at KMills@doc.govt.nz Kaweka Annual Fly In Hunt 13th-15th November. We have booked 4 blocks for this years Kaweka fly in hunt and we have quite a few names already, but room for a few more. Cost is $330. To secure your spot it must be fully paid by the 8th October. For further information and to register your attendance phone Steve Middleton on Range Officers Qualification For all those members who would be interested in completing the NZDA Range officers course please contact Mike Marston. Cost is $30. See page 9 for further details. 4
