Association Incorporated Meeting Minutes 29th August 2013 Meeting started 8.50pm after DOC briefing (covered after these minutes) Apologies: Anthony Hall, Mark McKay, Shaun Moloney, Bruce Harris, Andy & Mel Pedley, Jane & Lily Henderson, Darryl McKissock, Mark Salmons and Paul Damon New Members at Meeting: Great to see more new members at the meeting:- Mike Ide, Steve Gallagher, Peter-Ray Moroney and a returning old member Alan Mackie WELCOME! Correspondence in: National Office correspondence about Big 3 Competition and Natex Correspondence out: None Financials: Exact details not available but approx. $10k in main account, $12K in Steele Creek account Minutes from last meeting: True and accurate agreed by Nathan Wise and 2nd by Al Gay General Business: Working Bee at Hut Dave Rider has a list of areas that require some work of which:- Fire Extinguisher Dry all purpose needs recharging Radios to go up Shower to be fitted Meat Safe rebuilt Signage for hut went missing to replace Hut book to be updated More air tight containers required Bread Knife Better LED lighting to be installed Stairs/Railings to be fixed Vent holes required (Very damp from Winter) Page 2

Fire Grate Window seals rotten to be replaced Toilet floor in need of repair Names put forward for working bee so far:- Dave Rider Mark Mckay Sharon Gray Mauricio Roche Simon Bourke Hut Name Discussion Although the club calls it the Stoats Nest, the hut is still known as the old Mid Greenstone hut by many and confusion is caused especially at Small Planet where keys are held, mainly as keys say one thing but paperwork says another. So consensus was to officially call it Mid Greenstone with a nickname as the Stoats Nest Other business Next Meeting Next meeting to be scheduled a week early as hopefully everyone will be away on the working bee, so next meeting is on the Thursday before (19th Sept same time and place) New showroom Dave (the taxidermist) has a new showroom in Arrowtown and is keen to host the meeting in either Feb or March. More details nearer the time. Possum skins Adam Cowie in Invercargill needs Possum skins and has a good tanning service if anyone needs one Wapati Ballot Kaylene keen to try for a ballot if anyone wants to join her DOC Conservation Management Strategy - CMS Submissions for the CMS are due to DOC by the 13th Sept, so Shaun and Dave will make submissions on behalf of the club but if you have any feedback or can comment individually please do. It is important as without public input, DOC will just make the decisions THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY. Page 3

Also got 18 possums with Taz last week Darren Ryan: Nothing Steve Hanrahan: Went out with Nathan see above Mike Ide (NEW MEMBER): None Dave Dubnick: None Eon Lewis: None Phil Van Zuylen: Goats in Skippers David Jacobs: Nothing Paul Earney: Went to the Blueys, and got a spiker.. And paid the $11.50 permit which just got introduced Steve Gallagher (NEW MEMBER): Nothing Dion Halmshaw: Went to Coalpit got a chamois, took a mate with him so his friend carried it out (was about 1km from the hut) Alan Mackie: Hasn t been to a meeting in a while and keen if anyone wants to join him Tahr hunting (all his hunting mates are having hips replaced etc at the moment) Recently went to the Hopkins and helped his mate get a 12 bull was across from Memorial hut Peter-Ray Moroney: Went out near Manapouri but ended up in 2 days of shit weather, spooked one but not much else Kaylene Mc Brearty: Went with Macca to Arcadia was looking for reds, saw whitetails so nothing shot Page 4

5 August 2013 Mauricio Roche (Macca) Goats and deer last Monday near Mt Juda. Went to 12 mile sighted 12 fallow, took in an ex work mate and only thing he got was on the way in was a monster blister. The full document covers the whole of the Otago region and they are then split into different areas, Greg and Mark talked about the area shown below known as the Western lakes and Mountains Place, which is OUR LOCAL AREA. 7 July 2013 August 2013 The whole document is available online The main points DOC wanted to talk about were:- It is important to put in a submission (which is basically your view if you agree or disagree) Too many people think you only need submit if you disagree whereas submissions where you agree are equally important. Submissions are valued on content rather than volume or weighted towards groups or certain individuals. To make it easier Mark and Greg gave out copies of the excepts which I have tried to summarise here, but please refer to the actual document for further clarification. The bit that effects us is only about 13 pages long. Download here Section 2.3 Western Lakes and Mountains Place Highlights:- Tahr need to be removed from the Thompson Range Goats, Ideas on management of numbers welcome Whitetail Deer, No funding is given for whitetail eradication, DOC want Greenstone - Caples - Humboldt Highlights:- Doc want to make better access for family groups and looking for maybe guided walking in the Caples (although with no access to DOC huts during busy summer season) Summary for these areas Outcomes section We need to make sure our work re the stoat traps are recognised in this page so need to make a submission on this. Doc want to increase the heli access to the Greenstone, Caples area. Do we think this is a good idea? Doc need direction if we do think is it a positive move. DOC also need guidelines and help on knowing deer populations, basically there is no funding for them to find out so should we work with them to manage the numbers? The Greenstone river (contrary to belief) does not allow for guided fishing but a blind eye has been turned in the past, so DOC are looking to find a practical management solution. Page 7

A trust has been formed in this area with Air NZ & Ngai Tahu which highlights the growing need (and policy for business partners) for DOC to work with to do the conservation work with/for them. So this hut is being put out for expressions of interest, we are currently in competition for it with local clubs/schools. We will need to show why we would use it and how it would benefit the management of the RHA Areas for Goats where are they? Mt Difficulty - which boarders the Kawarau and Nevis rivers Coronet Peak Station and Skippers Canyon Road Temple Peak - a new area back in Crowne ownership (near Glenorchy) Loch Glennies - Past Wye Creek High Country coming on line soon for public access Glen Alan - Other side of the lake may become a hunting area access is via Roberts Creek or boat access across the lake Many club members fed back to the Doc guys that the ballot process should be electronic and online for ease but DOC said this was a low priority at the moment due to cost Page 9
