2 New Zealand Deerstalkers Association Incorporated Meeting Minutes 27th March 2014 Apologies: Shaun Moloney, Dave Dubnick, Mel Pedley, Mike Ide Minutes from last meeting Motion they are true and accurate: Agreed Donal, seconded Macca Correspondence in: National conference in Nelson 11th 13th July, Kaylyn volunteered to go on behalf of the club. Dave Rider possibly available too. Motion put to floor happy to send them and to pay registration fees and travel and accommodation costs for attendees. Agreed Dave, 2nd Brendan Branch newsletter received Invite for Tahr statue somewhere near Mt Cook Cromwell hunting competition over Easter $30 per hunter Notice asking if anyone interested in being National president met by a resounding nah, nope not me etc Reinstatement notification that the club is back on the companies register Hunting permit for Hare Shoot at Coronet Peak Approval documents for Upper Caples Hut for 6months initially to be extended at end of period Insurance being arranged with National Office for both huts, renegotiated that in event of fire we can choose to rebuild 1080 notifications at end of winter in Caples and Dart areas...so far Page 2

3 March 2014 Correspondence out: Mainly s regarding Caples Hut Financials: General account $7190 Greenstone/Steele Creek $1131 Term Deposit $ 11,807 General Business: Presidents Report We purchased new security keys for the Caples Hut Lighting needed for new hut to minimize fire risk from candles, Mark Salmons volunteered to sort and install after the roar Dave Rider went to the Caples about 3 weeks ago, flew in to assess and take photos. Findings were: Lots of sandflies - will need a fly door Motion put to club to pay for the helicopter costs: Sharon and Mark Greenstone over holidays to take in Chainsaw, oven and stoat traps Agreed Dave, 2nd Branden and costs for flying Dave in to check out the hut. Agreed Mark seconded Al Help was needed to paint the Steele Creek Bivy but not enough volunteers so the track was cleared and the painting rescheduled. See photos in next section of the finished result Caples Hut, No signage allowed (or wanted by members) but we are allowed to place markers off the track. Working bee will be needed for minor maintenance on the hut Hare Shoot at Coronet Peak Huge thanks to Shaun for helping put safety plan together. Paperwork all sorted and the club arranged a hare shoot for next few weekends 9pm 2am. (End of March all gone now) Those expressed an interest were Mark, Peter, Macca, Andy P, Dave R. Shotguns,.22 and.17 only allowed to be accompanied by Coronet Peak staff. Reflective vests to be worn, ear muffs and extra caution for other teams, power boxes, chairlifts, snow guns and magic carpet Page 3

4 New Zealand Deerstalkers Association Incorporated Southern Lakes Branch PHOTO COMPETITION MAY AGM At the last AGM with so much to get through, the members voted to bring the competition forward to March but no one was ready (except Dodgy Pete) so the club voted to do it in May again. So get ready and bring your photos for the competition at the next AGM in May Categories for the photo competition ends March 2014 Duke of Edinburgh Andy Pedley is running some Duke of Edinburgh award courses and hoped to use the Stoats Nest (Mid Greenstone Hut) 40 kids over next few years so motion put to club to allow kids to use hut facilities for $10 a night. 5 March 2014 Left Dingleburn area Right Ahuriri Valley Peter Ray Continued Very barren area but great views on top (which is why I added the pics above). Fell in a swamp after Macca shone torch in eyes and then lost his night vision Kaylyn Took her gun for a walk although saw a faun, no shots fired Andy Smith Missed last meeting so talked about his hunt in January with a visitor from Alaska, went for a tahr shoot, saw lots of them, in Gorilla Creek saw at least 90 animals. Had a friend over from the UK and went to Mt Aspiring to shoot chamois and the west coast and shot a buck, it was an area Shaun Moloney told him about thanks Not shot anything himself as been taking friends out instead Donal Went up Wye Creek, didn t see anything Also headed up Skippers, saw goats but no shots taken Branden Not been out Peter S Went for a goat shoot in Glenorchy with Mark and shot a number of goats Mark Bunny shooting and got 2 wild cats Goat shooting in Glenorchy and got 7 although one jumped off the cliff after being shot Jono new member Has been taking youngsters out teaching them wallabie shooting. Got about 90 in Kerawau Page 5

Everyone was in favour for him to organise a club wallabie shoot mid winter Eon Nothing Al Busy getting married, although went to the Kofai Valley. Spent a night up there, was thick fog so waited and waited but it didn t clear so came out and typically it cleared! Macca Went to the Ahuriri with Peter Ray, forgot his bolt for the gun so had to go back and get it. Been goat shooting in Glenorchy although got nothing as they ran away, then he came across goat paradise : a large group in the Glacierburn. He also spooked a deer but no shot Morganne Went for a walk and saw fresh footprints but no shots taken Lee Went to Glenorchy 8 pointer seen but not shot Dan new member Went on the hunts course and went to Doolans Creek, spent a while glassing and then stalked and shot a 9 point stag Steve Only been bunny shooting at the moment Dodgy Been running a hunts course so nothing to report Paul Went to the Doolans and got a fallow, went with Todd and got a spiker and a yearling Scott new member Went on the hunts course but was with Paul Daymon and saw nothing Dave Went to the Huxley with Kaylyn nice walk but no animals although saw a tahr slung under a heli that went overhead. Was helping trying to find tracking collar (that only worked occasionally) but nothing Page 6

7 March 2014 Hunting in the Percy Burn 10th 21st April Andy Pedley mentioned there was space available at the Percy Burn hut $10 per night. Just need to get your own way there (jetboat or helicopter or long walk) Any Other Business We need volunteers to learn how to do Douglas Scoring. Ask head office for details the course normally runs over a weekend Andy Pedley has a good contact that can certify you for your skippers ticket and the bonus that he will teach you in a great hunting area. Need 3-6 pax at a time to go ahead. Contact Andy if you are interested Dave Rider turns 40! Planning a big weekend starting with AN- ZAC dawn service then 10am paintball at Jacks Point, then a BBQ at Daves house. Saturday 2pm kids party then after kids bedtime, BBQ and birthday celebrations. EVERYONE welcome contact Dave is keen to join the paintball Calendars left that club purchased Dave suggested we drop them at Outside World in Frankton to sell Club trophy we won back. Ideally like to see it on display at Outside world.
