As you will see, our students have W been extremely busy over the last week, engaging in sporting, charitable and fundraising events with much enthusiasm. You should all receive an interim report today of your child s progress so far this term. Please check the dates for the scheduled Parent Consultations should you wish to speak to any of the teaching staff regarding the report. Happy reading and have a lovely mid-term break! S INTER - HOUSE FOOTBALL COMPETITION ENIOR BOYS MATCH On 4 th February 2017, the Student Council hosted the first-ever Inter-house Football Competition. There were three categories: KS4 Boys, KS3 Boys and Girls. There were three referees and spectators. I was one of the spectators. It was a mindblowing event. The first game that started the whole event was the Congo versus Volta match. It was wow! The first goal was scored by Subomi Borishade in Congo house, then Daniel Akawor shot from the other side and scored for Volta. For a while, there were no goals, until Bibo Dumbo scored another goal for Congo house. This sparked something in Volta which caused David Emodi to score the equalising goal. It ended in a 2-2 draw. The next game was between Benue and Senegal house. On Benue s side they had the best goal keeper, Cyril, our head boy and keeper for the School s football team. On Senegal s side, they had some tremendous footballers, like Michael Oamen. The first and only goal of the match was scored by Victor Owan. The game ended with a 1-0 score, putting Benue in the lead. The second round for Congo and Volta started. Volta scored, then Congo scored. It was another tough game but it ended with Volta winning by two goals. Volta rested for a while, when the second round of the match was being played between Benue and Senegal. The second round match between Benue and Senegal was epic but still ended with Benue winning. Benue scored twice, one goal by Victor Owan and the other by Mustapha Sanusi. Senegal scored one goal. The third place match was between Senegal and Congo and ended up with Congo winning with 2 goals. Both were scored by Bibo Dumbo. It wasn t an easy game. The final match was between Benue and Volta. It was the toughest game, but Volta still managed to win the game by penalties. It was all in all a very successful event, and the Student Council were outstanding. 2 P A G E 2 J UNIOR BOYS MATCH On the 4th February 2017, the Student Council organised the first-ever Interhouse Football Competition. As a member of the Student Council, I organised the Key Stage 3 boys competition. It was a very tough event. It started out with the Congo boys playing against the Senegal boys. It was very tough, but with the able captains of both houses, it went smoothly. Ibrahim Abdulsalam was the captain for Congo. Congo boys won this particular match. The second match was between Volta and Benue. This was the most competitive match for the Key Stage 3 boys as the best footballers were in these two houses. David Osibona was the captain for Benue. Even though David didn t play, as he was injured, he did a marvelous job of motivating his team and even though they lost, they still enjoyed it. The second round for both matches took place, and Congo and Volta qualified for the finals. The final match was won by Congo and Volta came second. The third place match took place and Benue secured third place. It was a really good game. Minaal Baba-Ahmed (Year 8) INTER - HOUSE FOOTBALL COMPETITION GIRLS MATCH On Saturday 4 th February, the first ever Regent Inter-House Football Competition was held. All four houses competed: Benue, Congo, Senegal and Volta. Each house fielded three teams: senior boys, junior boys and girls. At 2pm it was kick off time. The most interesting game for me was the girls; they tried their very best. The first game was between Volta and Senegal, then Congo and Benue. The two winners, Congo and Volta, competed again. It was a draw so goal difference was used to calculate the final winner which came out as Volta first, then Congo. The third place match took place and Benue secured third place. The overall results were: 1 st Volta 2 nd Congo 3 rd Benue 4 th Senegal It was a very good event and I truly hope it will become an annual event at The Regent Secondary School. 3 P A G E 3 INTER - HOUSE FOOTBALL COMPETITION O n Saturday 4th January 2017, the Inter-House Football Competition took place on the school field. It was organised by the Student Council and was a great success. There were three categories: KS3 Boys, KS4 Boys, and Girls. The competition was tough but in the end the best team in each category emerged as the winner. The results were as follows: KS3 Boys: 1 st Congo 2 nd Volta 3 rd Senegal 4 th Benue KS4 Boys: Girls: 1 st Volta 2 nd Benue 3 rd Congo 4 th Senegal 1 st Volta 2 nd Congo 3 rd Benue 4 th Senegal The teams were keen and the players did their best. At the end, individual trophies were also awarded in each category such as Best Keeper, Most Goals Scored and Best Player. Students and staff greatly enjoyed the games and we look forward to it next year! Aditi Sohoni (Year 9 Student Council)

P A G E 4 EL-KANEMI HOSTEL CHARITY VISIT A t 11:50 a.m. on 5th February 2017, the El-Kanemi girls arrived at the City of Refuge children s orphanage. We all saw a group of twelve young children sitting on cute, tiny chairs. We unpacked the gift items from the bus and then Mrs Okoro gave a short speech on why we were there. Next, we were given a chance to ask the staff members questions about the children and the orphanage. We found out the name and age of each child; they were all between four and nine years old. We were informed that there was another branch in Mpape which accommodates mostly teenagers. We were told that all the children, with varying degrees of emotional and health needs, were brought in and adopted through social welfare. A few minutes later, Temi Fagboungbe in Year 11 gave a very inspiring speech on confidence which made a few of us start to cry. Following that, Ruqayya Zanna gave a speech on love and respect that surely encouraged all of us. We were all touched by their speeches. Finally, we took a few group photos with the children and presented the food and supplies to them, for which they were very grateful. At 12:14 p.m., we were on the bus in tears coming back to school. It was a truly memorable day for all of us. Naomi Opayinka Year 8 (El-Kanemi Hostel)

P A G E 5 W ow, wow, wow, what a blast we had during the Fourth Annual 24-hour Famine! The programme was organised by the Duke of Edinburgh students on the field of The Regent Secondary School from Friday 3rd to Saturday 4th February Most of us only got to the field after dusk because we were earlier engaged in one activity or the other in the school. Once we had set up our tents, we were allowed the option of either watching a movie or dancing on the basketball court. I expected fund-raising to be quite challenging because school had been in session all through the period, so I had only a few hours on weekends to watch out for potential sponsors. I literally 'begged' anyone who visited my house my aunties, uncles and my parents' friends. It, however, turned out a lot easier than I anticipated as they were quite willing to contribute their resources once they learnt I was trying to help raise funds to assist a charity project. I aimed to raise just a little over my record of last year, which was one hundred and twenty-five thousand Naira but before I knew it, I was way ahead, so I became more aggressive and eventually made it to the two hundred thousand Naira mark! The fasting was a lot easier than last year, probably because I was mentally prepared for it but more likely because this time it was earlier in the year and the weather is not yet scorching hot. The hours were also quite tolerable. We went the whole day without food after our breakfast on Friday morning and, once we woke up on Saturday, it was time to break our fast. A lot more people participated this year than last year and I hope we've been able to raise enough to assist developing the LEA school or an orphanage near us. It is most fulfilling helping the less privileged. Sulaiman Maiyaki (Year 8) DOFE FAMINE O n Friday 3rd February 2017, The Regent Secondary School Duke of Edinburgh Bronze/Silver Students organised a 24-Hour Famine in which students were required to fast from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. the next day. However, we were allowed to drink water and juices. Students stayed in school for the 24-hour Famine and had to sleep in tents. This was just a taste of what less fortunate children our age go through as a result of lack of food. I am also aware that in England they do a 24-Hour Famine. However, there are 21 countries around the world that do a 30 Hour Famine. Why did I do the 24-Hour Famine? I did the 24-Hour Famine to know and understand the plight of children who have to stay without food for one day. I raised the sum of N250,600 for the charity project to contribute to the feeding of less fortunate children. I hope that these funds will go a long way to alleviate their suffering. I also believe that God will bless me for giving to the needy. How did I raise the fund? I raised the funds from my personal savings, and my parents, our relations and my brothers and sisters contributed too.

P A G E 6 DOFE FAMINE The total amount raised during the Duke of Edinburgh Famine was N1,012,900. The breakdown by house is as follows: Benue: N136,800 Senegal: N138,450 Volta: N325,500 Congo: N412,100 In conclusion, I wish to commend The Regent Secondary School for this annual event and I wish students more success in the future. Finally, I want to congratulate all the students who participated in this year s 24-Hour Famine. Yasser Marwa (Year 9) READER OF THE WEEK C ongratulations to Sarvagya Somvanshi (Year 8 Congo), who has read and reviewed the following books: The Book of Everything by Guus Kuijer. Twelfth Night Retold by Beverley Birch. The Last Viking by Terry Deary. Street Child by Berlie Doherty. QUOTATION OF THE WEEK A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. 7 P A G E 7 O n the 5th February, the Danfodio hostel went out on an excursion to the Kings Swimming Academy. After having prep, we all went to the front of the school where we saw two buses waiting to load us in to go. Mr Arthur divided us into two groups which consisted of years seven to nine, and years ten to eleven. The key stage three boys were put on one bus, and the key stage four boys on another. As we all boarded the buses, we were off to the swim academy. On our way, we all sat anxiously waiting to get to the academy and get a glimpse of the cool and relaxing water. The bus ride, fortunately, was nice and swift as we passed the time by singing along to the songs that were being played on the radio and by telling each other jokes. When we arrived at the venue, we went straight to the changing rooms to get ready for an amazing time. As we dived into the cool and relaxing water, we almost immediately started playing a game of water polo. The water polo game was pretty competitive as we all wanted to show our skills and tricks in the luxurious pool. The game consisted of four teams each consisting of six players and one keeper. The game was amusing and very entertaining. We all enjoyed ourselves as we played alongside with Mr Arthur and Coach Andy, which was a bit of an anomaly but we didn t mind. As the boisterous day passed by, we all soon got tired and enjoyed a nice cold beverage or two accompanied by a bag of warm and crispy sweet-coated popcorn. It was surely witty as we admired the prodigious works of art that were out on display. There were statues made out of pieces of old cars and trucks. I particularly remember this statue of a man playing a saxophone made out of scraps, nuts and bolts from an old car engine. All in all, it was a great time, and as we headed back to the school, we were treated with pizza to indulge on the way back. The Danfodio Hostel excursion was an amazing experience, and I m sure that all the other trips will be even greater! Tapfuma of Danfodio Hostel DANFODIO SWIM TRIP

P A G E 8 O n Sunday the 29th of January, Obi hostel went on an exciting trip to Kings Swim Academy. We arrived at the venue with a welcoming reception from the staff. The swimming pool was clean and ideal in size for us. They played music that everyone liked and enjoyed throughout our time there. They also had various equipment to make our time at the pool even more enjoyable. For example the water polo nets and water basketball rims. OBI SWIM TRIP However, as soon as we were welcomed, everyone proceeded to the changing rooms to put on their swimming trunks. After changing, everyone hastily got into the pool and swam leisurely. After about ten minutes, we split ourselves into three teams to begin playing water polo, which is basically handball but in the water. After sharing ourselves, the match between the first two teams begun. Everyone not in the first two teams enthusiastically cheered them on. As they were playing, the staff of both Kings Swim Academy and the Regent Secondary School had arranged for popcorn to be made and cold drinks to be served, as it was quite a hot day. A few people were not interested in water polo but nevertheless, there were other equipment suitable for their enjoyment, for example the canoe, which they effectively used on the other side of the pool. After about an hour and a half of fun, we exited the pool, changed and settled at a sitting area. As promised, we were served with nice popcorn and cold drinks to suit the weather. We then sat comfortably and ate while we socialized amongst ourselves. In the end, after a long day of fun and enjoyment, we were given a warm goodbye and then proceeded back to the bus to leave back to school. 9 P A G E 9 MATHEMATICS EXHIBITION O n Tuesday 31st January 2017, the Regent Primary held their Maths Investigation Day. The entire school participated and a few lucky pupils from The Regent Secondary School including me were chosen to witness the event. Different classes (from Lower Primary Upper Primary) were given different questions to investigate. This was a new form of learning that was introduced to me and I was intrigued. Never before had I considered the fact that investigation could take place in Maths. We were taken around the Upper Primary section of the school and we were fascinated by the amount of research and preparation that was done while investigating. Each class had been able to formulate a hypothesis, do some background research, and come to a solid conclusion. My favourite display was one done by Year 5S on the question: What is the highest scoring three letter word you can make in a game of Scrabble?. They came up with many different words and I was completely blown away; the possibilities were endless. I also learnt that the letter Z is the highest scoring letter in Scrabble. Overall, I think it was a great learning experience for everyone and I look forward to seeing it next year.
