III. The Foundation at HIES The construction of a successful high school football program starts with a strong foundation. Our foundation is our work ethic. We control and decide how we will approach the tasks that lie before us. In order to succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in life one must develop a strong work ethic. We believe this desire is within each us. It is our function as leaders to cultivate this attitude in each of our players. We will develop a strong work ethic in our academic support programs, strength and conditioning program and on the field. Once we have achieved this we can begin to excel in the four areas or pillars of our program to become a champion on the field and in life. "THE LOFTIER THE BUILDING, THE DEEPER THE FOUNDATION MUST BE LAID" - THOMAS KEMPIS (15 TH CENTURY AUGUSTINE MONK) IV. HIES Football Philosophy Our program is a result-oriented program in a people atmosphere. We will strive for success. Success will result from hard work, refusal to be denied and a great belief in ourselves. Through belief we must dedicate ourselves to becoming the best that we can be. To achieve, we must have a burning desire to excel. Our football program is a close-knit, goal-achieving group. We must work hard and strongly believe in the family concept. Each man will contribute and be recognized for his contribution. Trust is ultimately important. We will have loyalty and respect for each other. This will generate the family feeling and promote our family concept. Everyone will play a large role in contributing to a championship effort. The game of football is a violent game; it is also a very passionate game. It is an emotional game to be played with feeling. Those who fail often falter in the face of adversity; those who succeed rise above it. The strong survive because the strong will persist and get up. The harder we work, the tougher it will be to surrender. Our short-term goals will include raising our level of play daily and weekly. We must always leave the field better than when we came on it. If we raise our level of play consistently, our opponents will need superior performance to beat us. The factors we face in athletics are of two distinct natures: controllable and uncontrollable. We can do nothing about the uncontrollable. Such things as opponent s size and ability, weather, officials and March 6, 2018 Page 4

tactics of opponents are out of our hands. The controllable are our conditioning, our intensity, our spirit and efforts, our execution and our attitudes and beliefs about ourselves. We must pay attention to those things we can control and adjust in a positive manner to those uncontrollable factors. Those who put these factors into this perspective are winners. The philosophies of this program are the same qualities that make for a successful life. Success within the program will result in a winning atmosphere. Winning is successfully combining loyalty, leadership, knowledge, determination, persistence and effort toward a goal. We must work and believe in the Our Football Family. We will win with a POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE. V. Academics Our first priority as a coaching staff is to provide support that will ensure academic success for our players. Success in all academic subjects will lead to success on the field and in life. It is vital that we identify problems early and provide the necessary support that each individual requires to be successful. ACTION PLAN: Establish and maintain positive communication with faculty Monitor academic progress Team Study Table (as required) Individualized tutoring (as required) Utilize resources outside of the building PILLARS OF ACADEMICS: Graduate NCAA/NAIA Requirements Take SAT/ACT SAT/ACT Prep Classes Positive Classroom Grades March 6, 2018 Page 5

VI. Character It is assured that we can only control the things we have control over. We control the choices we make. We decide if the glass is half empty or half full. We determine on a scale from 1 to 10 what we will be. When a player enters the HIES Football program they will need to adhere to specific rules, regulations and codes. We expect our players to exhibit a Positive Mental Attitude in all aspects of their life. Finally, our players will strive to Be an Eleven. An Eleven is a person who holds himself to the highest possible standards to attain his highest personal destiny and to help others attain their true destines. We will incorporate leadership training based on the servant leadership model. PILLARS OF CHARACTER: Win with P.M.A. Leadership Program Rules & Regulations Football Code March 6, 2018 Page 6

Win with Positive Mental Attitude (P.M.A.) The Holy Innocents Football Program is a program of winning and excellence. The success of the total program begins with the people in the program. A positive mental attitude (P.M.A.) determines how you deal with problems. It helps us expect challenges, put them into perspective and attack them. It teaches us the miracles in life begin with our ability to deal with situations and go beyond because of our willingness to invest in our dreams. YOU CONTROL YOUR INVESTMENTS! P.M.A. is based on a strong self-concept. It allows us to build a self-confidence through a realistic evaluation of our abilities and principles. It is a belief in us and our capabilities. With P.M.A. we will improve in each area of our lives. We will work hard and never quit. We will initiate action plans to help us begin to realize goals. We understand that winners persist to an end. Most importantly, we will be enthusiastic about ourselves. By having self-awareness, we can build an inner strength, and develop our priorities in life into real and lasting principles. P.M.A. says "we can". It permits us to establish dreams and gives us direction to make those dreams come true. We will commit to goals and recognize those obstacles that stand in the way of success. We must set high standards; the goals we set will be within our reach, but not within our grasp. In this we recognize and important fact: WHAT THE MIND OF MAN CAN CONCEIVE AND BELIEVE, THE MIND OF MAN CAN ACHIEVE We will gain strength through adversity. There are no problems - only challenges and opportunities. We will actively seek opportunities in our willingness to solve all challenges through commitment and dedication of ourselves to press on. For every adversity, there is a seed of equivalent benefit. Sometimes we must search harder for those "benefits", but we will find them. We will at times get knocked down. But as champions, we will get up and go again. The true champion persists toward his goal; he will get up and go again when others cannot. We will expect the best and work toward that end. We must visualize success and see ourselves as achievers. We will give our best and live life to the fullest. In the end, we will look back with no regrets. TOTAL COMMITMENT WILL ALLOW US TO BE GOAL ACHIEVERS WE WILL WIN WITH P.M.A.! March 6, 2018 Page 7

Leadership Leadership has a focus on player growth as individuals and athletes. Leadership can be achieved by supporting our player qualities thru educational leadership training and utilizing the resources in our school community to better the overall HIES student experience. Coach Winter equates leadership education on the same level as weight training and practice. A team cannot win without any of the three. Coach Winter and Scott Whitehead (a HIES Parent) will be directing all football leadership activities in Program Rules & Regulations We believe our players expect to WIN every time they take the field. If we believe we are going to be champions, we must be prepared to make individual sacrifices for the good of the team. Sacrifice and self-discipline are an absolutely necessary price that must be paid in order to be a member of a great football TEAM. We, as coaches know that in society today there are many temptations to break training rules that we have set down. Remember do not end up losing everything you've worked for, because someone you may call a friend talked you into something you knew was wrong. He or she probably has nothing to lose. Be ready to act like a Champion and say, "No Thanks." 1) OBEY THE LAW 2) ACT LIKE A GENTLEMAN 3) POLICIES - ALL LEVELS a) Late to practice OT (*) after practice b) Absent - (1) Unexcused OT (*) after practice i) An unexcused absence is one in which the player has not cleared ii) his absence with his coach iii) A second unexcused absence will result in a coach, player and parent conference and possible dismissal from the team. iv) Excused absences are ones that have been cleared with the Coach Winter (Varsity/Junior Varsity/9 th Grade) and with Coach Davis (Middle School) beforehand. v) Cleared absences - OT (*) after practice c) Absent: In-season (Game Week) i) If player misses 1 day of practice they will sit for 1 quarter. ii) If player misses 2 days of practice they will sit for the that game. March 6, 2018 Page 8

4) DISCIPLINE FOR: a) Negative attitude contributing to team dissension i) Will result in an immediate coach, parent and player conference. ii) If this situation is not remedied by this conference, the player will be dismissed from the team. b) Profanity OT (*) c) Disrespect OT (*) d) Driving recklessly OT (*) e) Classroom troublemaker OT (*) f) Stealing (**) g) Use of tobacco and/or smoking, chewing, vaping (**) h) Use of alcohol or drugs (**) 5) INJURIES a) All injured players will attend practice - dressed out - unless excused by a coach. b) Players are to stay with their position coach during practice. (*) OT lasts for 5-10 min. after practice. (**) School policies will be enforced. HIES Football Code 1. MEETINGS a. Be prompt b. Have notebook or scouting report when needed c. Sit up in seat and pay attention d. We meet to win. A meeting is a practice a mental practice 2. PRACTICES a. We practice every day rain or shine. Only acceptable excuses are from Coach Winter or Coach Davis. b. Every injury should be reported to Coach Winter, Coach Davis and our trainer before you leave the field or school. In case an injury or sickness develops after you leave, contact Head Coach Winter. c. With all injuries, prepare yourself to return. The strong survive. d. No profanity. e. Be prompt. f. At practice, we will give great effort at all times. Move for a maximum of 3 hours; we do not let up in practice. March 6, 2018 Page 9

3. EQUIPMENT, LOCKER ROOM and TRAINING ROOM a. You are responsible for your equipment and its maintenance. As we have helped in fitting your equipment, make sure you constantly recheck. b. You are to contribute to the neatness of the locker room and training room by disposing of all tape and placing all your equipment in your locker before you shower. c. Equipment should not be removed from the locker room or school except to be cleaned. d. The locker room is the nerve center of our squad, a place to be treated as an inner sanctum, not the corner pool hall. e. If you leave the squad, make sure you personally turn in all equipment to Coach Winter. f. Our trainer is very important. They are a part of the family. Cooperate with them. 4. FOR THE GAME AND TRIPS a. We travel first class; we will wear the required attire, your best manners and a burning desire to win. b. Unless granted permission, you will return with the team. c. On the field, loss of self-control is a weakness. Slugging or dirty football is a result of a man s inability to do his job correctly. d. You are responsible for packing your equipment bag before and after the game. e. We expect you to respect the officials and coaches of other teams. We want you to be a gentleman at all times. We will be nasty hitters on the field, gentleman off. f. Our policy for the National Anthem is to stand at attention with helmet in your left side. g. The game is fun time. It is what we prepare for. Play it to the fullest with great concentration. When Holy Innocents takes the field at home or away we take it with pride, enthusiasm and a WINNING ATTITUDE. 5. FOR THE PRESS a. Always acknowledge another member of the team. b. Never criticize. Keep all thoughts in a positive manner. c. Never believe what you read in the paper, hear on the radio or see on the T.V. d. Be careful. Don t brag. THIS TEAM OR YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL MAY BE THE ONLY CONTACT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE WITH HOLY INNOCENTS. WE BELIEVE THAT WE ARE AT ONE OF THE BEST HIGH SCHOOLS IN GEORGIA. BY TAKING PRIDE IN EVERYTHING WE DO, WE LEAVE THAT IMPRESSION WITH OUR OPPONENTS AND EVERYONE WITH WHOM WE COME IN CONTACT. SO, IT IS TO OUR BEST INTEREST TO MAKE ANY ASSOCIATION WITH HOLY INNOCENTS FOOTBALL A POSITIVE ONE. March 6, 2018 Page 10

VII. Strength & Conditioning Everyone talks about wanting to win or to be successful. Very few people are willing to do the little things on a daily basis that determine whether or not they become successful. There is no MAGIC FORMULA for success or winning. WINNERS pay the price. WINNERS are committed. WINNERS do the little things. Little things do mean a lot and they do make the difference. Desire plays an important part in becoming a winner or in being successful. The one thing that is more important than desire or the will to win is the: PILLARS OF STRENGTH OF CONDITIONING WILL TO PREPARE TO WIN Team Goals Program Clubs 100% Summer Attendance Enroll in Strength Class in US BFS Readiness Program 8 th Grade Every effort should be made to sign up for Strength and Conditioning class. Coach Winter will be instructing this class in March 6, 2018 Page 11

PHILOSOPHY A. Our chances of winning begin in the weight room. If we don't do a good job here we will never be able to develop to our full potential physically and we will not have the attitude it takes to be successful. B. Only the strong survive in the playoffs. To be able to compete at the highest levels one must develop a special type of commitment to a total conditioning program. C. The most physical and best hitting team will usually win. You must have the strength, toughness, the fitness that it takes to be this type of team. Poorly conditioned and physically weak teams can't sustain the type of effort it takes to be a winner. D. The team that plays the best with its back to the wall will usually win. It is easy to go hard in the first quarter. We think one can learn to go as hard as he can go and to give one more great effort in the strength and conditioning program. E. Attitude and effort will eventually determine whether one reaches his potential. If one won't make the sacrifices it takes to improve themselves in a strength and conditioning program, they will probably never make the effort it takes to do the more demanding things involved in any good program. F. You will rarely know greatness and will DEFINITELY NOT REACH YOUR POTENTIAL if you don't train like a champion. G. Training on a regular basis will not only give you an opportunity to get better but will also give you an opportunity to know greatness. A GROUP OF PLAYERS THAT WORK TOGETHER WITH A COMMON GOAL WILL BE TOUGH TO BEAT March 6, 2018 Page 12

TEAM GOALS We want to reach these goals prior to our first Playoff Game a) Bench Press i) 20 players bench pressing 200 pounds or more for 1 repetition ii) 5 players bench pressing 250 pounds or more for 1 repetition b) Squat i) 20 players squatting 300 pounds or more for 1 repetition ii) 5 players squatting 400 pounds or more for 1 repetition c) Power Clean i) 20 players power cleaning 175 pounds or more for 1 repetition ii) 5 players power cleaning 235 pounds or more for 1 repetition d) 40 Yard Dash i) 20 players running a 4.99 or better ii) 5 players running a 4.74 or better e) Vertical Jump i) 20 players with a 24-inch vertical jump or better ii) 5 players with a 30-inch vertical jump or better PROGRAM CLUBS To Qualify: It must be a new club to receive an award. For the Players SENIORS It is your turn. What does that mean? It means that it is your turn to lead. You have big shoes to fill. I am confident that you will fill them. The program needs you to step up and be positive leaders. If you have any questions about what we expect from you as a Senior, you should see me (Coach Winter) a.s.a.p. WHAT PART WILL YOU PLAY Every player in the Holy Innocents Football Program will have a role to play. It would take an entire page if not two to cover the various roles that must be played to have a championship program. It is important for you to understand that no role is greater than another. In every role, you will be coached and expected to develop as a player in our program. Being the backup at a position, starting on the JV and playing scout team is just as important as starting on the Varsity. I know you may not believe this, but I do. That individual that is the backup starting on the JV and playing scout team is only one play from being a starter on the Varsity. ACCOUNTABILITY The quality or state of being accountable; especially: an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions THE GLUE THAT TIES COMMITMENTS TO RESULTS PLAYING TIME Every player that attends practice and puts forth the effort needed to be a champion will get playing time. Our goal is to develop players. You cannot develop if you are not playing. We are committed to playing a JV, 7 th, 8 th and MS B game schedule so that our players develop. March 6, 2018 Page 18

VARSITY PLAYING TIME We will play the best on the Varsity. Every player in grades 9-12 will have an opportunity to compete for a Varsity position. Nothing will be given to you. You will have to earn it. PRACTICE AND GAME ATTIRE First, and most importantly we are a team. We are not a group of individuals. We will work as a team and play as a team. We will be first class in everything we do. When we travel, we will wear the required attire. When we are in shells we will wear our team shorts. When we are in helmets we will wear our team shorts and t-shirt (sleeves will not be cut). We will wear white socks at practice. On game day, we will wear our team socks, approved cleats, and jersey s tucked in. Once again, we will be first class in everything we do at Holy Innocents. Be a Senior and complete the season in good standing with the TEAM. or 4. The Holy Innocents Football coaching staff by collective agreement may award any Athlete a letter. GOAL-SETTING Set goals in areas of your personal life, academic performance, and athletic endeavors. There is carry-over in all aspects. Be realistic, but don't sell yourself too short! Athletically, you should be very specific in what you want to accomplish! Do you want to be a varsity or junior varsity player? What position do you want to play? Do you really want to help our TEAM win championships? Do you want to start? How strong do you need to be? Are you taking full advantage of your opportunities? When you play other sports, are you competing, or just going through the motions? Are you taking advantage of your daily opportunities to get better? Do you ever tell yourself or teammates that it is "A GREAT DAY TO GET BETTER?" Be a leader! WORK HARD! How many times have you left the weight room worn out? If you have to think very long for this question and others... you are not taking full advantage of your opportunities! You should answer these questions and others that are important to you. Get a notecard and put all of your goals in writing. Put it in your locker. Put it near your mirror at home. Tell your teammates, girlfriends, coaches and parents what you want to accomplish. READ IT...THINK ABOUT IT...WORK AT IT... BELIEVE IT...ACHIEVE IT! THE IMPOSSIBLE IS WHAT NOBODY HAS DONE, UNTIL SOMEBODY DOES IT March 6, 2018 Page 20
