In the event of extreme weather, we will attempt to schedule practice indoors at the Hampshire Dome. Check social media and the website for changes. After dismissal, Souhegan High School has a free period (aprox. 1 hour) for student athletes to make-up course work, seek extra help from teachers, etc. We encourage all players to take advantage of this block before practice begins, but we expect that all players will be on time and ready to practice before 3:30. 10 PRACTICE SURVIVAL HINTS : 1. STRETCH ON YOUR OWN: Before bed and before breakfast, take 5-10 minutes to do a basic static stretch of your major muscle groups. This will help increase flexibility and decrease any soreness. 2. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET: Make sure you have good socks to wear with your cleats. Blisters can be very painful and even cause you to miss critical practice time. Dr. Scholl s moleskin product is the best way to prevent blisters. Look into it!! 3. HYDRATION AND NUTRITION: Football practice is intense and will drain your body of essential fuel and water. Please eat healthy meals that are high in energy and nutritional value. Do NOT skip breakfast- ever. Avoid sugary foods or drinks (soda, energy drinks). Drink plenty of water during the day and before practice. This is critical! 4. POST-PRACTICE HYGINE: Please take a shower immediately after practice. Thoroughly clean all scrapes or cuts to prevent infections. Regularly clean your helmet pads, practice gear, etc. 5. EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE: Regularly check your helmet and shoulder pads to be sure they are at 100%. Tape laces or straps on shoulder pads so they do not break and need to be replaced at inopportune times during practice. If your mouth guard has deteriorated, please get a new one immediately. 6. BRING WATER: We will provide water at practice, but it is wise to bring your own water to drink before and after to maintain hydration. DO NOT SHARE WATER BOTTLES WITH TEAMMATES, as this can cause illness to spread through the team and have a negative impact on players academics and athletics. 7. BE COACHABLE AND OPEN MINDED: Football practice is designed to improve your skills every day. Take critique well and embrace your roll on the team
OTHER HELPFUL HINTS Check the website frequently for schedule updates. Any and all updates will be posted to the homepage. Football game schedules (dates, times, and locations) are also posted on our site. Follow us on Football is a rain or shine sport and we will rarely, if ever, cancel a scheduled practice due to poor weather. Assume we are practicing unless you see otherwise on the website, an in-school announcement, or in an from Coach Lochman! Please do not send s or text messages asking if we will be practicing. Electrical storms will cause an immediate suspension of any practice or game We will occasionally use the Hampshire Dome for practice if the weather and field conditions are poor. Please refer to the website and your s for updates about these types of change in plan. The school s Athletic Trainer should be seen by any player who believes they have an injury. This should happen immediately. The athletic trainer must be consulted and is the only one capable of removing a player from active participation or returning a player to active participation. We may schedule various team building, fund raising or community events during the season. These will be announced and posted well in advance of any event we do.
PAPERWORK AND FEE REQUIREMENTS Please be sure that all of your required fees and paperwork have been completed prior to August 10 th 2016!! No player will be allowed to participate if they are missing required items. We cannot afford to have any members of our team missing critical learning at practice, so please pay attention to making sure everything you need to turn in is provided in advance! Please be aware of forms where there are multiple signatures required. We often have issues where a parent or guardian misses a signature line somewhere. The participation fee for football is $150. Paperwork and fees must be handed in to the SHS Athletics Office ASAP: Dick Miller, Athletics Director and Pam Paul, Athletics Secretary Physicals must be dated after June 1 st of the player s Freshman year, and are then good for the athletic career of the SHS student. If they player has a physical from earlier in the year, that will be accepted, with the stipulation that the player will get it updated and submitted at the first opportunity. URL FOR REQUIRED PAPERWORK (enter into your web browser): Please see ATHLETIC Registration Form A for the Souhegan Athletics Registration Check List to ensure you have all requirements accounted for!
BASIC TEAM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS ATTENDANCE: Attendance at all scheduled practices and games is mandatory. THIS INCLUDES PLAYERS WHO ARE INJURED! If you are injured, unless your doctor or the trainer is keeping you from attending practice / games, you are expected to be on-time, attend and be part of the learning process.absenteeism is considered excused / unexcused based on the SHS Handbook. Unexcused absences are absences that are not sanctioned by the school. The school sanctions absences for the following reasons: personal illness (if in school, student must be dismissed by the school nurse), medical appointments that must fall within the school day, family emergencies, preapproved college visits (coordinated through Student Services), school sanctioned field trips or activities. FIRST ABSENCE: Athlete will be required to make-up missed physical conditioning and will be suspended one quarter of play in the next game or scrimmage. SECOND ABSENCE: Athlete will be required to make up missed physical conditioning and will be suspended for one half of play in the next game or scrimmage. THIRD ABSENCE: Athlete will be suspended from the team. VARSITY LETTERING CRITERIA: The criteria for earning a letter is very simple: the athlete must have earned a starting role for 2-or-more varsity games on either Offense or Defense. All seniors will earn a letter. All letter winners must complete the full season and meet minimum attendance requirements. PLAYING TIME: All athletes will receive playing time at the sub-varsity levels. The amount of playing time is dependent on the athlete s performance in practice and ability to compete safely and effectively. Playing time at the Varsity level is dependent on the athlete s ability to understand and execute their assignments in a superior fashion. The coaching staff selects starters and assigns playing time each game based on a number of variables including game plan, opponent match-ups, player performance in practice relative to peers, etc. Personnel / playing time strategy is solely at the coach s discretion and not open for discussion.
SOUHEGAN MISSION STATEMENT We will develop young men into leaders of excellent character by emphasizing honor, respect, integrity, excellent work ethic, and brotherhood through the context of a fun and disciplined football environment.
