PRG Eternals won all their matches and even took one game 3 vs 5 despite the fact that two players were experiencing technical difficulties. All six players showed discipline by studying for the following week s exams despite being on tour. The trip to Vereeniging received overwhelming support from both the parents of these students and Plantronics. This event allows players the opportunity to earn their National colours. Whether parents believe that e Sport is an actual sport or not, the reality is that this is a fast-growing industry internationally and is now also gaining increasing popularity amongst high schools across South Africa. There are titles to be claimed, prize pools to be plundered and fierce competitors to be faced in tournaments that could even earn a player Springbok colours. As with any sport, it takes discipline and many hours of hard work (and play) to succeed. Top-ranking high school competitors typically have more than hours played. Gaming is clearly not always child s play. Only one week after the launch of Imperium, PRG claimed second place out of twenty schools across the country at the Online Interschools Championship. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as an overnight victor when it comes to competitive gaming. All participants had already spent hundreds of hours honing their skills long before the launch of Imperium. PRG is now reaping the rewards of their dedication. In addition to the interschools championships, two more successful events (one competitive and one social) have been hosted in the Japie Krige since February. Fifty learners attended the PRG LAN in March and Plantronics sponsored prizes for a CSGO and Fornite Battle Royale mini-tournament. The committee plans on hosting another event in the third term during which trials may be held for PRG s next esports season. Learners who would like to get involved with esports at PRG, can apply for a position on the committee during the third term. PRG Imperium plans on continuing to dominate high school esports by managing teams in a professional manner. The committee believes that coaching is the next step to achieving this goal. As high school gaming develops, the already growing esports industry of South Africa will expand even more. So much has been achieved within the PRG esports arena within a mere five months. So many more opportunities and challenges await. Committed players, commentators, event planners, content creators, game developers and artists all stand to benefit from the development of this exciting industry. Fast facts about PRG s esports Club Foto s: Verskaf The club was founded in February The name, Imperium, is from the Latin for absolute power. Under the leadership of Mr Louis van der Merwe, the Imperium committee is responsible for all organisation and admin related to PRG esports. The club currently has 40 active players for the games Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CSGO), Defence of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2), League of Legends (LoL) and Hearthstone. The club is sponsored by Plantronics and Headset Solutions who served as catalysts for the development of esports at Paul Roos. According to Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA), Imperium s Dota 2 and LoL first teams are currently ranked as the top high school teams in the country. PRG s CSGO teams have also been very successful in the High School esports League, with our second team beating Grey HS s first team 16 5.

The world is experiencing mixed feelings towards this historic summit. Some say that it was merely a façade; the documents that they signed were too vague to lead to any form of North Korean denuclearisation, and that the United States are getting the shorter end. Alex Aldrich In what was regarded as a diplomatic gesture in advance of the upcoming meeting between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the North Korean government recently transferred three Americans from the brutal labour camps (being described as terrible as Nazi Camps ) to a hotel near Pyongyang. Then, late on Tuesday night (8 May), after negotiating with President Trump, Kim Jong Un released the three hostages and handed them over to US custody. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accompanied the three men back to the United States, where they were welcomed by President Trump at 3am at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. As with any news with Trump, there are always mixed opinions. Many news outlets claimed that the manner in which Trump handled the situation was staged, and only meant to garner TV ratings. In which-ever light you view the welcoming, one fact cannot be disputed: this was quite an accomplishment for the abundantly scrutinized leader. Trump s victory in freeing the refugees has made us all ponder what the future will hold for North Korea s relationship with the rest of the world. Verlede kwartaal is hy een van slegs vyftien leerders wêreldwyd wat uit aansoeke gekies is om n gevorderde klavierprogram in Michigan, VSA, by te woon. En op 15 Mei vanjaar is hy aangewys as die wenner van die Hugo Lambrechts Musiek-kompetisie. Reinhardt het by mnr. Strijdom van die kompetisie by Hugo Lambrechts gehoor. Hy het dit goed gedink om die geleentheid aan te gryp, aangesien dit uitstekende blootstelling vir hom as n jong pianis is. Sy prys is onder meer n geleentheid om op 26 Augustus as solis by die Hugo Lambrechts Musiekfees saam met die Hugo Lambrechts-jeugorkes op te tree. Hy het hierdie jaar van Bloemfontein af Stellenbosch toe getrek om met sy lesse by mnr. Strijdom te kan voortgaan. Dit is dus n voorreg om Reinhardt n Paul Roos-broer te kan noem. Every choir member knows what lies ahead Semper 5 Culture Kultuur die gehoor Foto s: Rhenish Biblioteek Tannie Francois du Toit Een van die opwindendste jaarlikse koorgeleenthede het op 3 Mei met Paul Roos as gasheerskool plaasgevind. Tradisoneel neem vier kore deel aan dié luisterryke geleentheid, naamlik Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Bloemhof, Rhe nish en Paul Roos. Old Boy, bekwame sanger en musiekstudent Aiden Lewis, was saam met me. Luzanne Augustine (vrou van Drumline-guru mnr. Mark Augustine) seremoniemeester vir die aand. Onder leiding van mnr. ( n Afrikalied) gesing, waarvan Balbesit en Vela! vir die eerste keer deur die koor uitgevoer is. Die aand was n groot sukses te danke aan die MAD-komitee (onder die bekwame leiding van mnr. Reghardt de Beer en Steven Norman) asook me. Wikje du Preez (koorbestuurder), mnr. Augustine, die klankspan en die skoonmakers. Uit hierdie vier uitmuntende kore gaan Paul Roos, Bloemhof en Hoërskool Stellenbosch mekaar weer ontmoet by die Wêreldkoorspele wat vanaf 10 tot 15 Julie plaasvind (lees berig elders op die bladsy). Luke Giesler PRG se MAD-Komitee het van die Open Mic-aande van so n paar jaar gelede aanbeweeg na n asemrowende, sielsverblindende Talentbosch In plaas van n platform slegs vir sangers het Talentbosch deur Paul Roos n verhoog gebied vir die yslike verskeidenheid talente uit skole in die streek skole soos Rhenish, Bloemhof en die Hoërskool Stellenbosch. En dié verhoog is omtrent verswelg in die oorvloed van plaaslike talent wat hierdie skole bied. Na die vrolike en vermaaklike vertoning deur Rhenish se Marimba-orkes het Kringe in n Bos kleur gekry danksy Pieter Bruwer se op windende voorlesing. Vir een keer kon n mens hoor hoe Saul se pa, Joram Barnard, moontlik kon klink. n Graad 9-leerder, Jenna Tennant van Rhenish, het uiteindelik die gehoor, die beoordelaars én die meer ervare deelnemers met haar asemrowende stem betower en as wenner weggestap met n R2000-geskenkbewys van Paul Bothner se Musiekwinkel en R500 kontant. Die onlangs gestigte PRG- TV se kamera-span was ook by Talentbosch en het die vertoning uitgesaai, dus kan almal n smakie van die talente kry asook moontlike motivering vir volgende jaar se Talentbosch was dus n groot-sukses en Paul Roos se MAD sien uit na al die talent wat volgende jaar in Stellenbosch se skole ontgin sal word. I replied, We re off to the World Choir Games in Tshwane! This was followed by a laugh and then a silence when he realised I was not joking. The World Choir Games is real and it is right here in South Africa! The Paul Roos Gymnasium Choir will indeed be attending this prestigious international choir competition from July. Twee juniors en drie senior sprekers het deurgedring na die semi-finaal wat in Mei plaasgevind het. Hier behaal vier leerders die top-tien in die streek vir hul afsonderlike kategorieë. Mihan van Zyl (Graad 11) het egter die beste presteer en wen die afdeling, Graad onvoorbereid. Hy neem in Augustus aan die nasionale finaal op Buffelspoort deel. Die Oppie Tong Af-redenaarskompetisie het ook dié kwar taal plaasgevind. Hoewel dit Paul Roos se eerste deelname aan die myriad of different countries. This year is no exception. Every choirboy s voice is shaking and burning. Every teacher involved is serious and stressed. They know what lies ahead. Before finally performing at the 10th World Choir Games, the choir (after PRG bekoor!) will have another three big performances to serve as practice-runs for the big event: Stellenbosch High s Awesome Foursome, the Stellenbosch Eisteddfod and the regional round of the ATKV Applous choir competition. What is Paul Roos main goal for the World Choir Games? Meet some girls from Italy. Quotas are a vital means through which to reverse the apartheid policies of racial division and systemic disadvantage. One doesn t just wake up playing sport at a professional level. Talent needs to be identified and nurtured, and mechanisms should be in place to find aptitude at a grassroots level, and to ensure that this is developed. In many schools, as in PRG, these mechanisms are in place. The proposed plan to ensure that all races are represented in the national team is a highly-debatable topic that still raises many eyebrows. But thanks to these policies, it has taken South African cricket more than 20 years to produce a Temba Bavuma, who earlier this year became the first black cricketer to achieve a century for South Africa in Test cricket. Would Temba Bavuma been handed an opportunity without the quota system? Who knows but Temba remains a shining example of its ability to inspire others. Why you might feel like killing your parents Alex Aldrich How many of us are familiar with the word familicide? The Van Breda axe murders that shook Stellenbosch two years ago brought the subject to the fore. Parricide refers to matricide and patricide, the killing of a mother and father. When an entire family is murdered it is called familicide, as was attempted in the Van Breda murders. Where does one even begin to understand where the lifegiving bond between a mother and father and their child turns into lives being taken? It turns everything that a civil society needs as basis for future loving relationships on its head. As a sign of respect for the family members who can no longer speak for themselves, I will not deal with the murders directly (this has been very aptly and continuously done by the media), but will rather attempt to investigate the profile of a person who commits familicide. Why do children kill their parents? Dr Kathleen Heide Professor in Criminology at the University of South Florida in Tampa has written several books on the subject. According to Professor Heide, the following three distinct categories of parricide offenders exist namely the severley abused child, the antisocial child and severely mentally ill children. According to Dr Heide severely abused children kill an abusive parent to stop the abuse. They might have sought help, but the abuse has continued and no other way out is seen but murder. Antisocial children kill their parents to further their own goals. It might be to inherit money, to have more freedom or to continue dating a person to whom the parents object. In other words to remove an obstacle. Severely mentally ill children kill a parent because they are mentally ill. Or might have been on medication but stopped taking it and suffered from delusions and hallucinations. How do we stop or prevent parricide from happening in the first place? Take all threats even those made jokingly or disturbing communication as a call for intervention. Anyone who threatens murder is sending out danger signals that cannot be ignored. Other than it being home to Stellenbosch University, the oldest wine route in the country, amazing secondary schools and so much more, Eikestad is known for its myriad of quaint restaurants, boutiques, cafés and art galleries. If you rank these restaurants in order of quality, De Volkskombuis could arguably be placed around the top of that list. The name may not be too familiar since the building, a beautiful old labourers cottage, had been standing vacant for an extended period before it was restored and leased as a restaurant by the Rupert family in The restaurant has a great many ties with Paul Roos Gymnasium. Firstly, the owner is Old Boy Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede wine estate, who kindly sponsored a meal for five members of the Semper editorial team. Secondly, it is located right across from Paul Roos s Volkskombuis sports field at Markötter (1876 Old Heinrich Rode Considering the multitude of characters, motivations, storylines and settings that had to be juggled in this film, directors Anthony and John Russo have done a great job in making The Avengers: Infinity War. It is a film of enormous scope and ambition, and yet the simplest film of all. The plot follows all of Marvel s famous superheroes as they valiantly battle Thanos (played by a heavily CGI-influenced Josh Brolin), and his eerily malevolent lieutenants. Thanos is a seemingly invincible and unrelentingly determined purple monster, who seeks the six Infinity Stones of mind, soul, space, power, time and reality. They will enable him to restore balance to the world, as he puts it, as he would be able to blur the lines of reality with a snap of his fingers. The superheroes include Iron Man (Tony Stark), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Bruce Banner/ Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Dr Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) among many others. The plot is logically structured, although complex, and jumps from setting to setting with such fluidity that the audience is completely free from bewilderment. It cleverly and steadily builds up to a climax and conclusion that will leave many astounded. The directors and actors know that they are treading on thin ice because of how specifically and historically constructed the characters and their motives are. Any wrong move, and the film would have been blamed for being incomprehensible. They avoid any such consequences by playing it safe and by letting the plot progress scene by scene by scene, and by letting the superheroes react to Thanos and not the other way around; the focus is shifted from the heroes to their problems. This is indeed a film about Thanos, not the Avengers. No acting plaudits are therefore deserved, because no acting skills are required. The actors must however be forgiven, for their sole objective was to exhibit their characters as they did in the previous Marvel films, and not to make any mistakes. Film editing of high quality also plays a crucial role in keeping the story together. Scenes are swiftly and logically connected, and one is able to both understand and be enthralled by the many battle scenes. Narrative structure aside, a steadfast formula of technical filmmaking, the lines of Dit proe soos nog. Some other scrumptious meals include a delicious, sweet pork belly along with homemade sauerkraut and roasted sweet potato, as well as a variety of steaks that would cater to the needs of all steak-lovers, such as a soft 350g beef ribeye which simply cannot be left unexplored. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to De Volkskombuis and was very impressed with the friendly and gracious service and kind demeanour of the people that work there. The service ambassadors are particularly well-trained and impressed us with their professional presence without ever that Marvel had also implemented in the previous eighteen films, is once again used. By now Marvel s visual effects, cinematography and production design collective is so used to creating fantastical civilisations, usually in space, that I imagine the numerous colourful and futuristic settings of Infinity War were easily come by. The sound-editing and sound-effects teams ensure that the bombastic quality that has become the generally accepted norm for superhero films is attained. Where, oh where did Infinity War lose two of its possible five stars then? It is a film of enormous scope and ambition, and yet the simplest film of all. Why enormous? Why not vast, great or magnificent? De Volkskombuis is an excellent place for food lovers, small get-togethers and larger celebrations, business functions or a simply an excellent family-and-friends outing. All and all: upon visiting De Volks kombuis, you will experience a comfortable, homely atmosphere in which you will be able to enjoy fine wine, exceptional food, pleasant conversation and friendly and effective service and from which you will leave only unwillingly! With a rating of 4,7/5, De Volkskombuis is undoubtedly one of Stellenbosch s finest places to visit. A Solid Stepping Stone amid Dark Waters single thing in the whole universe is used to advance the plot. Everything from time to reality to every philosophical ideal you can think of. The artists behind the film have to distance themselves from their subject matter to protect themselves. From their own lack of talent, or from the fans who have to be enthralled? Yes, the film is ambitious, but the ambition is simple: Connect everything Marvel has created and create a blockbuster. As explained in this review, this has been done well, but that doesn t give the film any right to be acclaimed a great film. As fluently as the scenes connect to one another, so miserably do their different tones complement one another. Once a dark and heartwrenching moment is done with, an Avenger arrives to an uplifting soundtrack, and all is well. The clichéd and awkward comedic moments that are the norm in most box-office hits these days, are ever-present (for example Thor who constantly mistakes Rocket, one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, for a rabbit). The two stars are therefore claimed by all the challenging aspects of the film gone bad, while the three stars go to the unimaginatively pleasing characteristics of the film that were attained. From their own lack of talent, or from the fans who have to be enthralled? Both are true. If fans are enthralled, who cares about the filmmakers and actors talent? It is indeed a film solely made for the fans, but why was it truly made then? In 2019 a sequel to The Avengers: Infinity War will be released. Who knows where Marvel will take us next? Perhaps some imagination still lurks in their midst. Perhaps sometime in the next decade the Avengers will be replaced by the Destroyers, featuring Chief Africa, a member of the long-lost and unusually peaceful Uthulu tribe, Lord Thunder, the long-lost cousin of Thor, Yi Ho Ming, a young techno-genius, and Jake Lancaster, a suave gentleman who is constantly irritated by Lord Thunder s gruffness, among others. Also joining them will be Fe-male, an inspiring and confident woman who always has to explain how her father, Iron Man, actually named her after him. Hy sê my dat, hoewel hy nie in die tra disionele prentjie van Paul Roos ingepas het nie, het hy vir homself n geleentheid geskep en nou is Paul Roos n plek waar hy ook sy talente kan uitleef. Hy het ook vir my gesê dat Paul Roos baie soos die lewe is. Daar is altyd geleentheid, maar jý moet dit sélf laat ge beur en as jy nie inpas by Paul Roos nie, is dit niemand se skuld behalwe jou eie nie. Most of us are aware of the old cliché say ing: ' It s not about the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of fight in the dog '. In contrast with this, I be lieve we as Paul Roosers can relate. It is not about the vic tories, the fame nor the suc cess of the school, it is about the heart of a school what lies within. Paul Roos has a huge diversity and flourish es on the sport fields, in the auditorium and in the class room, accommodating all learners irrespective of abil ities, talents or backgrounds. Paul Roos again stepped up to the plate in making it an other term for the history books. However, Paul Roos is not just about what we write up in those books. It is about what happens when no cam era is looking, what happens in the change rooms before a derby and what happens on the grounds when the music starts playing. It is about the memories we make, irrespec tive of our achievements. So much has happened in as few as 11 weeks. It started out with our Win ter s Day encounter against SACS and some would say it ended with our last victory over Oakdale. However, I disagree with this statement. Die hart van ons skool lê egter nie in die prestasies nie, maar in die oomblikke en herinneringe wat ons vir niks sal verruil nie. Dít is wat ons elke oggend laat opstaan en dít wat ons met trots oor die skoolgrond laat beweeg. Dit is die gees op die stands, die maroen bloed deur ons are en die trots in ons stemme wanneer ons 'Old Boys ' sing. Paul Roos is not just an ordinary school with aston ishing achievements, but rather an astonishing school with great achievements. We have realised that each of us can make a difference in our book of results, but togeth er we can make a change in the hearts of each other. As a brotherhood we have lost games, we have failed at tempts but we certainly have not lost dignity. 6 Semper 10 Social Sosiaal Simon Franken A while ago Alexandra from Rhenish came to Paul Roos to exercise her right to free speech. She read us a poem titled Cat Call. And while speculation and own agenda was thrown around quite carelessly, we never had the opportunity to hear Alexandra s side of the story. This is why I went to interview her for this article. What I heard from Alexandra was not what I was expecting. We have become so accustomed to mobs of women listing the many mistakes our predecessors have made, and to our so-called sexist nature and patriarchy being blamed for every inconvenience, that it is no wonder that many of our fellow students felt attacked by the poem, labelling it as just another criticism toward men. The general backlash came from An interview with Alexandra a disassociation, the driving force of which was the lunacy of some so-called modern feminists who state men are the scum of the earth and responsible for every evil ever created. Alexandra has clearly stated she is not one of these individuals and after speaking with her I cannot agree more. As the interview continued I realised that I was speaking to an intelligent girl who treated me not as the enemy but as an ally. This made me reevaluate the situation as well as the poem. Alexandra stated that she not only visited Paul Roos, but her school as well and her goal was never to insult or attack men, but rather the act of cat-calling. Alexandra went on to explain she preached to the masses not because all of us are incapable of understanding how disrespectful and distasteful cat-calling is, but rather to make us aware and Why is cat-calling even a thing? motivate us to hold each other accountable. She furthermore went on to say that cat-calling and sexual objectification was not isolated to women, but that men also often do get objectified. She believes both genders are guilty and that the issue isn t men cat-calling women. It is that cat-calling is even a thing. The mob mentality that often goes along with cat-calling is that individuals doing it might feel safe, but the singular girl might not. It is not that you shouldn t flirt with a beautiful girl. Cat-calling is an act where two individuals most probably will never see one another again. It is cowardly, if nothing else. If you want to compliment a woman, do it to her face, plain and simple. Consider the difference in the upbringing of the two genders. While the intent of your cat-call is either a joke or a true compliment, the reality is, in these times of abundant rape cases, that a woman has the right to not like it or even to be scared by it, considering that a man could easily overpower a single girl. Men often don t even consider this and we don t live with that fear. I do disagree on certain points. PRG TV is a platform for all the learners and teachers to show the world who we are and what we do. It is more than just for the learners and teachers. As Societas-komitee het ons hierdie jaar sover baie geniet en ten volle benut en ons nooi elkeen van julle om deel te vorm van ons program en die res van jaar te gebruik om die gemeenskap saam met ons te dien. Leerlingraadskolom Graad 8 s skiet diep wortels Die leerlingraad was hier die kwartaal betrokke by Skills Day wat deur Jordan Dowd en Yvonne Makwara van Rhenish georganiseer is. Die doel van Skills Day is dat minder-bevoorregte kinders blootstelling kry aan geleenthede waaartoe hul nog nooit vantevore toegang gehad het nie. Baie van die kinders het nog nooit n perd of n astroveld gesien nie, iets waaaroor ons hier in Stellenbosch al blasé geword het. Die kinders is blootge stel aan rugby (hulle het glo ons eerstespan voorryspelers omgeduik), hokkie, krieket en vele ander aktiwiteite waaraan hulle nie die voorreg het om in hul eie omstandighede deel te neem nie. Daar is groot behoefte in en rondom Stellenbosch, en die barmhartigheid van n maroen blazer, strepies of nie, word altyd genoodsaak. Onder die portefeulje Projekte beplan Alex Aldrich n voorlopige Boomplantdag vir die Graad 8 s. Die idee van die projek is simbolies van aard: danksy die baie geleenthede wat Paul Roos vir elke leerder bied, het elke Graad 8 die geleentheid om deur aktiewe betrokkenheid by die skool se aktiwiteite te groei as n Paul Rooser. Of jy rugby, hokkie, tennis, krieket, debat, koor of skaak wil doen, Paul Roos bied vir jou die geleentheid om jou wortels te skiet waar jy wil dit hang van jou af of jy die geleentheid met albei hande wil aangryp of nie. Ek hoop dat julle Graad 8 s die waardes wat ons vir julle geleer het, in julle skoolloopbaan sal toepas en elke geleentheid wat aan julle gebied word ten volle benut sodat wanneer jy met jou matriekdas in 2022 kyk na die boom wat jy in 2018 geplant het, jy kan voel dat jy jou wortels so diep as moontlik geskiet het. 8 Semper 14 Sport Te vinnig om n vrou te wees maar niks kry Caster onder nie Tian Louw Caster Semenya (27) is een van die geskiedenis se invloedrykste sportsterre op tartan én in die politiek van atletiek. Sy is n vrou, maar gebore met n mediese kondisie hiperandrogenisme wat hoër as die normale vlakke van manlike hormone (androgene) in die vroulike liggaam tot gevolg het. Die groot vraag is of haar mediese kondisie vir haar n onregverdige voordeel bied op die atletiekveld nié of sy n vrou is of nie. Want dít is sy definitief. Die groot debat het in 2009 by die Wêreldatletiekkampioenskap in Berlyn vlam gevat. Semenya het met gemak klaarblyklik té gemaklik die goue medalje in die 800m vir vroue ingepalm. Maar kort daarna het die publiek begin vrae vra, want haar vordering was buitengewoon. Weke vóór haar deelname aan die kompetisie het ASA (Atletiek Suid-Afrika) haar ingeroep vir n lukrake opkikkertoets. Dié kamtige sogenaamde dope test was eintlik n toets om haar werklike geslag te bepaal. ASA het geen uitslae bekendgestel voor haar deelname aan die kampioenskap nie, maar ná haar groot oorwinning het die IAAF (die beheerliggaam vir atletiek) besluit om sélf ondersoek in te stel ten opsigte haar geslag. Sy is elf maande lank versoek om nie deel te neem aan enige kompetisies nie, aangesien hulle in die proses was om te bepaal of sy wél mag deelneem as n vroue-atleet. Sedertdien het sy goue medaljes verower by die Olimpiese Spele (800m; 2012 en 2016), die Wêreldatletiekkampioenskap (800m; 2011 en 2017), die Statebondspele (800m en 1500m; 2018) en vele meer. Maar skielik, na die onlangse Statebondspele, is daar nou wéér n probleem. In April 2018 het die IAAF nuwe regulasies in plek gestel wat gemik is op vroue met afwykings in hulle seksuele ontwikkeling. Dié regulasies (wat op 1 November 2018 in werking sal tree) vereis dat n atleet met n afwykings in haar seksuele ontwikkeling (gewoonlik vroue met testosteroonvlakke hoër as 5 mol/l) aan spesifieke kriteria moet voldoen om in aanmerking te kom vir deelname aan kompeterende atletiek. Dit vereis dat n vrou met androgene vlakke hoër as dié, haar bloedtestosteroonvlakke moet aanpas en onderhou om by en/of onder 5 mol/l te bly. Die ou regulasies het toegelaat dat vroue met hiperandrogenisme mag deelneem aan kompetisies, maar dié vereis dat atlete soos Semenya hulle liggame moet verander as hulle steeds wil deelneem. Maar mans se normale testosteroonvlakke wissel tussen 264 en 916 mol/l. beteken dit dan dat alle mans wat aan atletiek deelneem, se testosteroonvlakke op gelyke vlak moet wees want anders het dié met vlakke van 916 mos n onregverdige voordeel bo ander? Die oorspronklike vraag was of dit regverdig was vir Caster om deel te neem of nie. Nou is dit iets soos Is dit regverdig om van vroue te vereis dat hulle hul liggame moet verander om te kan doen wat hulle wil? Hoekom is dit alles so omstrede? Omdat dit nou die beginsels van regverdigheid in sport en die regte van vroue wat met hierdie kondisie gebore is teen mekaar laat bots. Dit is byna onmoontlik om tot n gevolgtrekking te kom wat alle betrokke partye sal bevoordeel. Caster Semenya is definitief n rolmodel vir burgers van Suid-A frika, sowel as vir atlete regoor die wêreld. Sy is keer op keer teruggehou as gevolg van hoe sy gebore is, maar sy het weer en wéér teruggekom om almal daaraan te herinner dat sy n uitsonderlike atleet is wat haar terugslae met waardigheid en grasie te bowe kom. Die IAAF se nuwe regulasies is as skynheilig bestempel, veral omdat dié orgavnisasie alewig ná n buitengewone prestasie van Semenya skielik vrae vra nooit vóór die tyd nie. Dis maar net nóg n terugslag vir Caster maar ons kan vertrou dat sy, net soos in die verlede, ons land se naam sal hoog hou en sterker as ooit sal terugbons. This tournament, hosted by Kearsney College, is one of the most prestigious on the tennis calendar and the cream of the crop of SA schools compete for the renowned title. Paul Roos, led by captain Jean Durand, ventured up to Kearsney, determined to add yet another feather to their cap. PRG opened their account by thwarting Selborne College by 9-0, sending a clear message to their opponents. A 5-4 victory versus a very determined and well-oiled Affies team followed, as Paul Roos showed class and character to pull it through in the end. The maroon men made light work of Clifton High School as they once again steamrollered to a 9-0 victory ensuring their place in the play-offs. Die O/14 aflosspan, bestaande uit Mitchel Engelke, Ruard van Reenen, Antoni van den Berg en Reuben Faure wen silwer in twee onderskeie aflosse, naamlik die 4x100m vryslag en die 4x100m wisselslag uitnemende prestasies in kompetisie met 743 swemmers van 79 verskillende spanne regoor die land! By die Senior Suid-Afrikaanse Swemkampioenskap van April in Port Elizabeth het 6 Paul Roosers, naamlik Daniël Prins, Benno van der Merwe, Mark Kleinhans, Righardt Muller, Mitchel Engelke en Reuben Faure deelgeneem. Righardt Muller kwalifiseer vir beide die 800m en 1500m vryslag finaal. Hy vaar uitstekend, slaan n WP rekord en raap n gesogte goue medalje op. Dié vurige swemmer wen die 1500m vry slag met 16:01:52 en verbeter Kings of Kearsney PRG continued their flawless performance by dispatching with Pretoria Boys High 6-0 in their semi-final clash as they entered the final beaming with confidence. PRG once again faced off against arch-rivals Grey College as they did in the final of the Gerrie Berner tournament. Historically, this is always the penultimate schoolboy tennis clash as these teams more often than not battle out for the no.1 spot. PRG were absolutely ruthless as they defeated Grey College 6-0 to claim their second major scalp of the season. By doing so, they confirmed their status as undisputed leaders in the ranking. It has been one of the best seasons the first team has had in years. The future of PRG tennis looks extremely bright as the winning outfit only has one matric in it. Credit must be given to Mr. Jacobus Swanepoel (better known as Swannie) for all his hard work and dedication that n twaalfjaar-oue rekord met twee sekondes (wat óók deur n oud- Paul Rooser, Heerden Herman, in 2006 opgestel is!). These victories, among others, have provided a solid foundation to build upon in order to achieve future success. Six Paul Roos boys have already been reaping the benefits of this solid foundation and have acquired admirable success after being selected to represent themselves, their school and their country in an international soccer tournament taking place in Italy, in July The San Marino Cup is the largest Italian youth soccer tournament suited for young, promising footballers with a desire to showcase their talent. The tournament includes more than 100 teams from 18 different countries, playing host to approximately 3000 participants each year. This year commemorates the 17th edition of the tournament which will be played in the Rimini Riviera and San Marino Republic of Italy. The boys competed in a series of exigent trials attended by players from all over the Western Cape who were determined to make the cut. Ciaran Dammert (Grade 10), Mfundo Mashiya, Samuel Raats, Joshua Whitely, Tim Norton (Grade 11) and Nicholas Brokaar (Grade 12) were successfully able to impress and have earned themselves a coveted spot in the Cape Town Invitational team traveling to Europe later this year. The selectors were satisfied with the way in which the respective players were able to demonstrate their proficient ability on the soccer field. The boys were hand-picked out of a select few to join the squad on their travels to Lo Stivale (the bootshaped country) from the 8th to the 13th of July. The San Marino Cup serves as a great opportunity for these skilled footballers to broadcast their talent on an international level. Many players dream of receiving the exposure gained from participating in a tournament that is hosted by one of Europe s finest footballing nations. Along with their selection, these young men have also been awarded the honourable responsibility of being ambassadors for South Africa. This is undoubtedly a great sporting, social and cultural experience characterised by a unique international atmosphere. Eighteen of PRG s finest footballers will look to repeat an excellent performance at the annual U/19 Kloof High School football tournament in Durban. The group matches will take place on 22 and 23 June, with the knockout matches taking place on 24 June. The boys will be competing among South Africa s elite footballing schools with a goal of eventually being crowned champions. Only 6 of the 18 players are in matric. Hopefully, the combination of experience and youthfulness will bring the team as much success as it did in previous years. The Paul Roos firsts and will be looking to avenge themselves after being knocked out by Glenwood in the quarter finals at last year s edition of the highly-coveted tournament. Henco du Pisanie The exam time normally signifies an end to the first half of the hockey season, but this year is a bit different, like every other aspect of Paul Roos hockey this year. The late revamping of the Maties astro has led to a few difficulties in the Paul Roos hockey diaries. PRG Hockey had a false start to the season with trials and practices starting weeks after the regular date, due to the astros that were not finished. Paul Roos hockey players have nevertheless shown depth and quality with their results this term, with wonderful games against SACS, PBHS, Somerset College, Bridge House and DF Malan. Paul Roos short preparation time did, however, catch up on them when they faced schools with similar depth, like Bishops and Grey PE. te speel tydens die Cravenweek. The first team showed few inconsistent pockets, with some outstanding performances like the thrashing of Somerset College (16-0) and a brilliant display against Grey PE that nevertheless ended in a 1-2 loss. The 16As did not fully achieve the high standards expected of them. They lost more games than expected and lost some games where they were the overwhelming favourites. All of the above highlights the fact that Paul Roos needs an astro of its own. Players cannot improve their technical skills because of limited facilities in terms of individual practising. If you look at the players making under 14B/C teams, you will see that they usually stay in the B or C teams until matric, because Semper 15 Sport O/18-Vyftiental en Reagan van der Westhuizen en Jarrod Cairns is in die WP Akademiespan ingesluit. Paul Roos has the best coaches in SA, but not the facilities. This raises the question, why do we spend more money on sports of which the facilities already give pupils the competitive edge, but do not provide the facilities where they are sorely needed? On a more positive note, there are juicy interschools matches awaiting Paul Roos after the June holidays. The Cape Town Schools Hockey Festival is coming up, which will entail matches against the great hockey schools in the Western Cape, not to mention the oncoming clash against Grey College. Die span word deur talle kenners, onder andere deur internasionale skeids regter Jonathan Kaplan, beskou as dié beste Paul Roos-span in dekades. Die span van 2018 het tot dusver werklik die droogte van die afgelope paar jaar gebreek deur skitterrugby te speel en het tot dusver twaalf wedstryde gewen uit die twaalf wat gespeel is. Dis egter die manier waarop oorwinnings behaal word wat die prestasie nóg merkwaardiger maak. Paul Roos het hierdie jaar n uitstekende balans tussen voor- en agterspelers, met n sterk dog mobiele pak voorspelers, wat deur flink agterspelers met groot spoed en hope balvaardighede ondersteun word. Die twee merkwaardigste oorwinnings tot dusver was sonder twyfel die een van oor Paarl Gimnasium en die oorrompeling (44-8) van Paarl Boys High. Paul Roos het dit in albei wedstryde reggekry om n droogte van drie jaar te breek. Toe die titaniese stryd tussen die eerste spanne Paul Roos en Hoër Jongenskool afskop, was Markötter vol hoë verwagtings ten spyte van die feit dat die meerderheid van PRG se spanne nederlae gely het. Maar soos verwag het die wedstryd die kenmerke getoon van n internasionale rugbywedstryd, en is selfs deur n internasionale skeidsregter, Rasta Rashivhenge, gehanteer. Paul Roos het vroeg die voortou geneem met goeie afrondingswerk deur Tiaan Pretorius in die hoekie om punte op die bord te kry. Boishaai het egter nie op hulle laat wag nie en het kort daarna self n baie goeie d rie gedruk. Danksy uitstekende skopwerk deur Paul Roos se heelagter, Kade Wolhuter met sy briljante skopskoen, wat n verdere 9 punte op die bord gesit het, het Paul Roos teen rustyd met 16-8 voorgeloop. Dit was egter eers teen die tweede helfte dat die maroen masjien op volle vaart gekom het. Te danke aan baie goeie hantering deur veral Jarod Cairns het Paul Roos kort na rustyd gedruk en n moeilike skop is weer eens deur Wolhuter oorgesit. Paul Roos het hierna net die tempo gelig en, gelei deur kaptein JJ Kotze wat werklik die voorbeeld gestel het, het Paul Roos vir Boishaai in alle fasette ore aangesit. Paul Roos het op die ou einde met n rekordoorwinning van 44-8 weg gestap en sodoende hul opponente heeltemal verneder n ongelooflike vertoning deur ons manne, wat werklik hulle stempel afgedruk het as een van die top-skolespanne van Die sei soen is egter nog nie verby nie. Greykollege lê nog voor, en dié sal waarskynlik op die ou end as die skolerugbywedstryd van die jaar onthou word. Daar lê nog baie gholf vir 2018 voor, maar hier is solank enkele hoogtepunte. Die seisoen skop elke jaar met die Boland Somerliga af. Paul Roos se eerste span het vyf wedstryde gespeel, waarvan vier gemaklik gewen was. Die opponente sluit in Paarl Gimnasium, Somerset College, Parel Vallei en Bridge House. n Naelbytstryd teen die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl het egter op n nederlaag uitgeloop, en die Paul Roosers uiteindelik derde in die Somerliga geëindig. In April het die span in die Noorde gaan toer. Hulle het deelgeneem in die Affies Gholftoernooi en het vir meeste van die Pretoriase skole gewys hoe om gholf te speel. Die top gholfskole in die land het aan hierdie toernooi deelgeneem. Die spelers het op baie bekende en moeilike gholfbane gespeel, soos Pretoria Country Club en Silver Lakes Golf Estate, en het hard gewerk om n uitstekende derde plek in die toernooi te behaal. Nog n hoogtepunt was toe die span tydens Winters Day vir SACS ore aangesit het die eerste keer in jare dat die twee skole kragte meet. By die Boland High School Champs het PRG in die 4de plek geëindig. Worcester se wind het die manne se koppe blykbaar deurmekaar gewaai, maar n hoogtepunt van die dag was nogtans dat daar drywers op n 136m baansyfer 3 teen die bekende Noordwestewind van Worcester geslaan is! n Groot hoogtepunt vir Paul Roos Gholf was toe hulle Grey PE in die jaarlikse derby geklop het. Die eerste span het n sege van 5-1 behaal, die tweede span n oorwinning van 3,5-2,5 en die derde span het gelykop 3-3 gespeel. James Joubert is gekies vir die Boland se O/15-span en Louis Loubser is gekies vir WP se O/17A-span. Die spanne is tans besig om in die Boland Winterliga te speel. Daarna volg die jaarlikse derby teen Grey Bloem. Doen jouself n guns en gaan kyk n bietjie hoe goed die Paul Roosers vanjaar hul gholfstokke swaai.
