Dié kragmasjien is op 9 Junie deur die nuwe hoofafrigter van die Bokke, Allister Coetzee, as nuwe stut vir die span aangewys, nadat hy met Tendai Beast Mtawarira om sy posisie moes meeding. Dit is nadat n kniebesering in 2015 Kitshoff se Wêreldbeker-drome verpletter het, en hy sodoende sy kans op Springbok-kleure verbeur het. Intussen het Kitshoff op 5 Junie in Suid-Afrika aangeland ter voorbereiding vir die eerste toetswedstryd wat op 11 Junie met Ierland kragte meet. Kitshoff speel al vandat hy 18 jaar oud is professionele rugby vir die Stormers, en in die tyd dat hy daar gespeel het, het die span twee maal as Curriebekerkampioen weggestap. Hy speel al sedert 2005 op provinsiale vlak rugby. Tydens die vyf jaar wat hy in Suid-Afrika senior rugby gespeel het, het Kitshoff n indrukwekkende 60 keer vir die Stormers uitgedraf, en 39 keer met die wit-en blou-gestreepte trui van die WP. Met die nommer 1 op sy rug het hy reeds meer as 4087 wedstryd-minute opgestapel. He can be aggressive, specifically in the scrums, but he can be very accurate as well that s a very strong characteristic you look for in props. Paul Roos is dus tans onteenseglik die skool wat al die meeste Springbokrugbyspelers opgelewer het. Dit is genoeg rede om net nóg trotser te wees op n instansie wat sy groot rol volhou om ons land sowel as die wêreld se rugbygeskiedenis te help skep en te help voortbou.

2 2 Semper Aktueel Current Affairs Jogos Olímpicos Rio 2016 Johan Schoeman There are only 44 days left until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games kick off. Over the past few months the Olympic torch has slowly been making its way towards Rio de Janeiro, home of the 2016 Games. The Games will be held in Brazil from the 5th of August until the 21st of the same m o n t h, with a total of 206 countries competing for an esteemed gold medal. Rio de Janeiro (the River of January) was founded in 1565 by the Portuguese and was declared the capital of the Brazilian State of the Portuguese Empire in Today Rio is the sixth largest city on the South American continent and the second largest in Brazil. Rio is well known for its Copacabana Beach, Sugarloaf Mountain and the massive statue (38 metres tall) of Christ the Redeemer atop Mt. Corcovado. The city s biggest tourist attraction is Carnivál, an annual celebration of Brazilian culture. The centre stage of the Olympics will be the Maracanã Stadium. Although most sports will take place in Rio de Janeiro itself, some of the smaller events will enjoy venues like Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Manaus and Salvador. There is a certain degree of uncertainty as to whether Rio will be able to host the Games successfully amid its current political and economic turmoil. In March 2016 millions of Brazilians took to the streets in protest of the Brazilian Government s mismanagement of funds and corruption, calling for the impeachment of their president, Dilma Rousseff. The Brazilian economy seems to be on the verge of collapse, with Moody s Rating Agency downgrading the economy to junk status and the Brazilian Real dropping 17% in value in 2016 alone. Old boy Francois Hougaard wil take part in the first-time ever rugby 7s event. A massive recent outbreak of the Zika virus has started a debate regarding whether the Olympics should still be hosted in Brazil amid growing health fears. The Brazilian Government has, however, assured the world that the Olympic Games will be hosted to great success in Rio, irrespective of the country s tumultuous situation. New inclusions to the Olympic stage include golf and rugby 7s, while kite surfing, a newcomer to the Games, will replace kiteboarding in the sailing category. Minister of Sports for the South African Government, Fikile Mbalula, is confident of South Africa s performance in the 2016 Olympics. South Africans to watch at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games include swimmers Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh, the SA men s rowing team, and sprinting superstar Wayde van Niekerk. The Blitzbokke 7s team is also among the favourites to claim gold in Rio. An international star to keep an eye on is definitely Michael Phelps who returns to swimming after a recent doping scandal. Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, will be looking for a 23rd medal in As usual, Usain Bolt will be the name on everyone s lips. Rio 2016 will be the Jamaican speedster s last Olympic Games and the 100m world-record holder will undoubtedly want to end off his incredible career with a bang. Brazil might be going through a patch of turbulence, but we have to believe in Rio. We have to believe in the 2016 Olympic Games. We have to believe in the power of sport, because regardless of economic, political or social hardships, sport overcomes all. J A M - Jesus and me Alexander Klose JAM (Jesus and me) het die afgelope ses maande in Paul Roos vlamgevat. Leerders vergader elke Dinsdag eerste pouse in die Japie Krige. Hearing God s voice is op die oomblik die tema wat tydens JAM-sessies bespreek word. Daar word n vel papier met verskeie verwysings uit die Woord aan die leerders oorhandig wat hulle dan tydens stiltetyd kan gebruik. JAM-sessies is nie die enigste geleentheid vir leerders om meer van Christus te leer nie. Aan die begin van die jaar is leerders selgroepe ingedeel wat deur senior leerders gelei word. Die senior leerders neem volle verantwoordelikheid vir die bymekaarkom tydens pouses asook vir die boodskap of onderwerp wat tydens sel bespreek sal word. Daar is vroeër dié jaar ook n opleidingskursus aangebied vir lede wat graag n selleier wou wees. Aangesien die Graad 8 s se JAMkamp in die eerste kwartaal by Franchhoek so n groot sukses was, het mnr. De Beer en die JAM-Komitee besluit om meer Christuskampe tydens naweke te reël. Hierdie kampe staan bekend as JAMventures en is gratis. Die leerders gaan slaap een aand in die berg n uiters opwindende ervaring. In die afgelope twee kwartale is daar ook verskeie Praise and Worship -aande deur Bloemhof en Paul Roos gehou.

3 Semper 3 Turning Tops & Tags into wheelchairs: DB Janse van Rensburg Jaco Marais Paul Roos is not only a big name in sport, academics, culture and Gees, but also a leader in contributing to the local community. You may be thinking of the usual river-cleaning, gardening, the Straatlig movement and homework club as ways to make a contribution to the community but who would have thought collecting bread tags and bottle caps can change people s lives? DB Janse van Rensburg (Grade 10) felt a great urge to make a difference and introduced this project at Paul Roos after hearing about the idea earlier in his primary school and also from someone in Cloetesville who is doing it. Semper went to investigate and asked DB a few questions. How exactly does the Tops & Tags project work? The project works as follows: basically the learners bring me tops and tags or hand them in at their register classes. When I have enough tops and tags, I sell them per kilogram to the company. With that money I actually go to Dis-Chem and buy a wheelchair with a 50% discount due to an agreement with them. What drove you to introduce this project at the school? I wanted to make a difference and the best way to do this was to get as many people as possible to help with the project. Opperman leer vir ons meer oor die kuns. Wanneer het Meneer vir die eerste keer n baard gekweek? Pretorius: In 2009, toe ek 23 was. Opperman: My eerste baard het sy verskyning gemaak toe ek twaalf jaar oud was. Watter karaktereienskappe het mens nodig om baardwaardig te wees? Pretorius: Ek dink nie jy't karaktereienskappe nodig nie! Jy moet net n baard kan groei. Opperman: Mens sal dink 'manlikheid', How has the school and staff assisted you so far? The teachers at the school helped promote and told their register classes to bring the tops and tags to class and collect it as I can t go to all the classes to do it. Even the terrainkeepers and workers at the school are collecting maar jy moet eintlik baie goed en gereeld was. Hoe versorg n mens n baard? Pretorius: Natuurlik is dit soos hare, jy moet dit was met shampoe en conditioner en dan kan jy seker maar Buffelsfonteinbaardolie aansit. Opperman: Jy gaan n regime van baardolies moet hê sodat jou vel dit kan hanteer, n bietjie conditioner om hom sag te maak, sodat jou significant other nie moan oor die stekelrigheid nie, en n goeie baardkam. Help n baard n man om meisies te beïndruk? Pretorius: Ek weet nie, dit kan ek nie beantwoord nie. n Baard kan jou seker help, party meisies hou daarvan en ander hou nie daarvan nie. Opperman: Nee, ek is getroud. Wat is die snaaksste ding wat Meneer al in Meneer se baard gevind het? Pretorius: O nee, hy was nog nooit so lank dat ek iets daarin kon vind nie. tops and tags for their communities. (The Rector has also undertaken to equal DB s financial collections). I hear you introduced Tops & Tags at some of the neighbouring schools, which schools have accepted the challenge? Yes I introduced it to Paarl Girls High, Bloemhof, Stellenbosch High School and some churches in the surrounding area. What is your favourite quote that served as inspiration for starting this project and giving to the community? You don t have to do great things. You can do small things with great love. We must also not put focus on ourselves, but rather on others. This project is a prime example of how Paul Roosers can make a difference in other people s lives and set goals aimed at improving others lives, not just our own. At the moment DB has 4, almost 5 bags full of bottle caps and breadtags. We take our hats (also tags and bottle caps) off to DB for his initiative to become involved with such a noble cause and for his effort to drive it forwards. Pretorius: Nee, ek het nie n baardrolmodel nie. Opperman: Ja-ja-ja, Moses. Hou Meneer se vrou van die baard en affekteer dit vir Meneer? Pretorius: Ja, my vrou hou van die baard, sy't nie probleme met die baard nie Opperman: Sy hou baie van die baard en sy't hom help uitkam. Net 'ja' of 'nee' - is dit waar wat hulle sê van alle mans met baarde? Pretorius: Nee... Opperman: Ja. Aktueel Current Affairs Kranige kultiveerder groet PRG Charl Smit Meneer Werner Cloete, wat al 16 jaar deel van Paul Roos is (eers as hoofseun en later as onderwyser), verlaat die skool teen die einde van 2016 om betrokke te raak by die stig van n unieke nuwe skool wat hoëgehaltemaar bekostigbare onderrig vir die agtergeblewe mark sal bied. Die implikasie vir PRG is dat mnr. Cloete nog hierdie jaar deeltyds sal klasgee, maar dat die toekoms onseker is. Mense beweer dat veldbrande in die Boland vinnig versprei, en n sinoniem vir veldbrande, is stories soms skinderstories waarvan niemand weet wat om te ignoreer en wat om te glo nie. Maar hier is die volledige waarheid rondom mnr. Cloete se weggaan. Die nuwe skool wat beplan word is n Engelse seunskool, met hoëgehalteonderrig, wat n Christelike etos sal hê en fokus op n tipe vaderskap- en manweesopleiding. Mentorskap en akademiese uitnemendheid sal ook primêre fokuspunte wees vir die skool. Daar is nog nie genoeg konkrete feite om te sê dat daar definitief volgende jaar of die jaar daarna n nuwe skool gaan open nie, sê Meneer Cloete. Al wat daar op die oomblik is, is n konsep. En die konsep raak al hoe sterker met al die planne, navorsing en idees wat uitgeruil word. Die ligging van die skool en die personeel, is alles nog ontbrekende dele van die legkaart. Al wat hulle weet, is dat hulle graag die skool in Stellenbosch sal wil oprig. Soos die lewe maar werk, moet daar nog baie onderhandelinge plaasvind voordat die legkaart voltooi kan word. Alhoewel daar groot drome vir die skool is, sal daar eers op klein skaal begin word. Nuwe konsepte moet beproef word en daar sal gefokus word op n gesonde skoolkultuur. n Stewige fondasie sal bydra tot die langtermynsukses. Een van die vertrekpunte is ook om die tameletjie rakende ongelykhede in die land aan te spreek. Alhoewel die skool as n private skool sal funksioneer, sal die staat n gedeelte subsidieer. Meneer Cloete se langtermyndoelwitte met die skool: om binne 10 jaar nog vyf soortgelyke skole die lig te kon laat sien. Hy glo egter dat alles sal gebeur op die regte tyd en plek. Finansies is meestal die bepalende faktor in die verwerkliking van n droom en die skool se tydraamwerk sal dus ook afhanklik wees van donateurs. Die grootste les wat Meneer Cloete al geleer het: Soek in alles eers die koninkryk van God en dan sal ander dinge in hul regmatige plek val. Die geheim vir sy merkwaardige loopbaan tot dusver is om selfs die kleinste van jou verantwoordelikhede tot die heel beste van jou vermoë te voltooi. As jy getrou is in die klein dingetjies, sal jy verantwoordelikheid oor groter dinge kry. Meneer Cloete se lojaliteit sal altyd by Paul Roos bly, waar hy ook al gaan. Sy groot wens vir Paul Roos: dat die skoolkultuur van waardes en karakter op so n sterk geestelike fondasie gegrond sal wees, dat dít, eerder as skinderstories, soos n veldbrand sal versprei onder die mense met wie elke leerder in aanraking kom. Om Meneer Cloete op te som: Passievol, gefokus en n goeie humorsin. Elke Paul Rooser is voorwaar bevoorreg om deur sy hande gevorm te kon word. 4 Foto s: Daniel Moller 4 Semper Kultuur Culture Paul Roos, die inleidende span Renier Hattingh Debat by Paul Roos het die jaar nie net in deelname gegroei nie, maar in prestasie ook. Die WOW-debatfees, Dink of Sink en ATKV was dié kwartaal se Afrikaansdebatkompetisies. Paul Roos se senior sprekers, Renier Hattingh en Francois van Zyl, het na die semifinaal van die ATKVkompetisie deurgedring, soos ook die junior sprekers Jacques Bothma, Ronin Nel en Mihan van Zyl. Paul Roos se junior span het hierdie jaar groot oorwinnings behaal, onder meer die WOW- en Dink of Sinkbekers. WOW en Dink of Sink is albei onvoorbereide kompetisies met formate wat verskil van mekaar. Die twee wenspanne betrokke het uit Jacques Bothma, Francois du Toit en Mihan van Zyl bestaan. Die semifinaal vir die senior ATKV-semifinalste het op 11 Junie plaasgevind en die juniors sal op dieselfde dag by Hoërmeisieskool Paarl deelneem. Die juniorspan het tweede in die Wes-Kaap gekom en deur gedring na die finaal. Wat redenaars betref val n klomp Paul Roosers hierdie jaar onder die Wes-Kaap se top tien. Charl Smit is sesde in die senior afdeling en Mihan beklee dieselfde posisie in die junior afdeling. Christo Langenhoven Rating: The Jungle Book is the newest action/ fantasy/adventure remake of the classic 1967 film version with the same name. The plot follows the life of Mowgli (portrayed by Neel Sethi), the man cub who was adopted by wolves, and his growing up as part of the pack, trying to learn the ways of the wolf. The peace within the pack is disturbed after the villainous tiger, Shere Khan (Idris Elba) appears and vows to seek revenge against man after his face was scarred by Mowgli s kind. Mowgli then leaves the pack with the help of Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) the black panther and sets of to join a human village, but things are complicated when Mowgli is ambushed by Shere Khan, who injures Bagheera. Fortunately, Mowgli somehow escapes. Mowgli also crosses paths with Kaa the giant Indian python (seductively voiced by Scarlett Johansson) and the laid-back bear called Baloo (voiced by comedy genius Bill Murray) This is one of Disney s most profitable and enjoyable movies of 2016, where viewers can happily sing along with the classic soundtrack which includes Bear Necessities and Be Like You. The Jungle Book is definitely not to be missed.

Following an incredible showcase of the school s musical talent during the 150th Year festivities, it was full speed ahead for the choir under the leadership of Mr Stephan Bezuidenhout and Mrs Luize Kroukamp. The entire repertoire of the ATKV Applous selections for this year had to be learned, finalised and perfected before 18 May, when the first round of Applous! was to be held at Gene Louw Primary. After a lot of work and editing, the final selection of music was as follows: Die Aardryk is Puur Blou. This is a touching song of longing for all things beautiful and pure, followed immediately by My Voete Loop na Montagu, a lively, child-like song of which the lyrics were written by esteemed author and poet NP Van Wyk Louw. Both are part of a set of prescribed songs set by the ATKV, and which every choir competing in the category More Experienced Boys Choirs have to perform. Psalm 100 was specifically adapted by the choir by a composer in the United States, an intense song of joy and praise, which causes goosebumps on every audience-member s skin as the eerie lines fill the entire room, with the drum beating like a big heart, carrying forth the continuous rhythm. The African Medley was compiled by Mr Bezuidenhout and Lunati, a student at Stellenbosch University Music Department, and has been inspired by the old songs of freedom and resistance sang by protesters during the apartheid regime. Opening with Senzelina, with hands held aloft and sadness and confusion creeping into every corner of the room, the question is asked: What have we done? Suddenly, as the echoes of woe still haunt the audience, a new song starts, the intensity growing. We will not go to Kwashu, because the revolver will kill us. Resistance builds, and as one the choir dances, refusing to go. Then comes the climax of the song. The energy and anger crackles through the air like electricity. Pasopa nantse dotred nyama Verwoerd. We will kill Verwoerd. Rage stirs the room, and the audience sees the choir moving closer and closer, singing loudly and clearly. The ensemble ends with the choir looking the audience straight in the eyes, frozen, fists in the air.last in the programme is the controversial yet brilliant composition, Pouse, written by the learners of our school and transposed by the talented Mr Bezuidenhout. This song gives the audience an idea of the chaos that reigns during the 40 minutes of freedom Paul Roosers get during every school day. The song has been written verbatim, which means that every recording of every conversation was worked into the piece exactly as it was. Starting off with the chaotic beginning of break, lines that stand out include: Ek like dit om hier te kom pouses, hier s wifi ; Hoekom maak jy so n paadjie in die middel van jou kop, jy lyk simpel ; Ek wil nie met jou praat nie, want jy skip leg day and Ek het gisteroggend vir ISIS gesien, oh wag, dit was net jou meisie, followed by an unfortunate Thys Sutherland being pummeled by Martin Louw. Then follows a short jazzy interval, where poor Charl Smit has to take the flak. Charl, jy s n paal., Hy paaldans vir fun., en Christoff kyk. But conversation quickly turns deep as religion becomes the topic. Dink jy dis onheilig om die Here in sy oë te kyk? After a conclusion is reached, the bell abruptly rings, break is over, and everybody leaves. After a couple of rather sketchy performances at Awesome Foursome and bekoor, things started looking better after the Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd, where the choir scored gold and a B. While there was some uncertainty and confusion over some aspects of the performance, the choir came back in true Paul Roos fashion, winning gold at Applous! and moving on to the next round, which will be held in Stellenbosch later this year. Joining us there will be Grey Bloem, and Stellenberg Boys Choir. The Paul Roos Sanggroep also had high hopes to fulfil after their victory at 2015 s Sêr Competition. This year the group again came out in full force with a carefully-selected line-up for the crowd at Paarl Gymnasium. The theme this year was Make Love, Not War, and the group charmed the audience especially Joshua Cloete with his heart-melting solo rendition of Toe vind ek Jou by Francois van Coke and Karen Zoid. As one the Sanggroep Corps marched on stage, ready to do battle with the enemy, Paarl Gym Sanggroep. Accompanied by Clemens Kicks on his trumpet, the group fired the opening shot with the Vrede Medley (all songs were carefully compiled and rehearsed by the group itself, with some help by Mr Bezuidenhout). After that it was straight into Avicii, an upbeat compilation of the DJ s songs, reworked by the sanggroep. With Martin Louw beatboxing and Curtis Gordon dropping some rap lines, the whole crowd was jiving to the music. The last act was Artikulo, a strangely stirring and intense song, with Martin and Curtis taking the lead, and leaving quite a few females in tears. The Sanggroep decimated their opponents, took the battle and won over the judges hearts. All in all, Paul Roos s musical department remains of the highest standard, and we wish them the best of luck in their upcoming performances, so that they can hopefully once again return victorious. Veeltalige onderrig kom dus (op die oomblik) neer op onderwys in Engels en Afrikaans. Min. Nzimande het ook voorgeneem dat hierdie tipe taalontwikkeling geprioritiseer sal word. Die vraag bestaan egter of die plan uitvoerbaar is en of die wil om dit deur te voer bestaan. Die idee van moedertaalonderwys is vir baie aantreklik omdat studente wat in hul moedertale studeer werksinhoud makliker en beter kan verstaan. n Monolinguistiese taalbeleid sal ook die verdere ontwikkeling van ander tale as akademiese media verhinder. Vir leerders van Paul Roos Gimnasium sal die uitkoms van die taalkwessie beslis verreikende gevolge h ê : dié van ons wie se moedertaal nie Engels is nie, sal moontlik in n tweede taal moet studeer en dit is nodig dat ons onsself hiervoor voorberei. Nóg belangriker is egter dat ons met oop koppe na diegene wat van ons verskil luister, en dat ons volkome eerlik en tegemoetkomend met mekaar sal wees. Paul Roos Gymnasium, a proud boy s school in South Africa, preparing gentlemen for the world, is no exception. Not only do they run the world, but they do it in a way that puts a grin on Mother Earth s face. Take Societas, for example. This committee and all of its volunteers are in the process of changing Stellenbosch, week after week. The environment is being healed: Societas members clean the Eerste River on a regular basis; hungry people are being fed, thanks to the vegetable garden behind the school and less fortunate children are now able to make future plans because of Paul Roosers who give them hope. The difference that PRG is making must never stop. Be the change you wish to see, Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India once said. This team has to continue with what it is doing and should let the world see what it is up to. It will never settle for mediocrity while always remembering to remain humble. Often tested.
