2 JW MULLER, SKOOLHOOF UIT DIE KANTOOR Die derde kwartaal is tradisioneel n lang kwartaal met n wye verskeidenheid aktiwiteite. Ons leerders en onderwysers het weereens bewys dat hul tot só baie in staat is deur hulself op verskeie terreine beskikbaar te stel en betrokke te wees. The term started well with the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod where our learners participated in public speaking, music, drama and dance. Our drama group also achieved very well in the ATKV national acting competition. The music department also presented a top notch concert, boasting a full orchestra and visiting choirs. NEWSLETTER 3 OCTOBER 2018 Twee van ons leerders het n merkwaardige prestasie behaal in die Bio-Science Wiskunde Geletterdheid Olimpiade. Simonet Kapp en Rebecca Venter in 12A3 het onder die top 3 IN DIE LAND geëindig! Rebecca het die eerste posisie behaal met 96%, en Simonet Kapp het 3de posisie behaal met 92%. Cherith Millward (12A4) placed 8th in the De Beers English Olympiad (First Additional Language). This is no mean feat, if one takes into account that thousands of learners participate in this national competition. Khazimla Mabengu, a matric learner, has been selected to the u/21 WP hockey team which will take part in the SA tournament in Pretoria in September. Twee van die skool se skuts presteer op internasionale vlak ook uitstekend. Adriaan de Beer (12A1) is gekies om Suid-Afrika te verteenwoordig by die Jeug Olimpiese Spele in Buenos Aires. Marx Meyer (10A1) het laasmaand na Oostenryk getoer waar hy aan die swartkryt wêreldkampioenskappe deelgeneem het. Hy het tweede, derde en vierde plek losgeskiet in die 50 m en 100 m en pistool-afdelings onderskeidelik. The 9th interschools against Tygerberg High School was also successfully completed this term. Every year we refine the traditions regarding the week preceding interschools and the learners greatly enjoy this period of the term. Die Saterdag van interskole was ook vir die personeel, leerders en oudleerders n besondere dag toe die onderste rugbyveld na meneer Petri Stofberg vernoem is. This term we have decided to extend the first break on Thursdays so that learners have the opportunity to participate in spiritual activities. If they choose, learners may attend CSU in the Ossie Theron Centre. Die personeel het op n koue Saterdagoggend saamgekom om n bosberaad te hou. By hierdie jaarlikse vergadering is introspeksie gedoen oor die stand van die skool en besluite oor die toekoms is geneem. Die personeel is opgewonde oor wat nog vir die skool voorlê. Towards the end of the third term we normally expect the Matric Farewell (which takes place during the holidays this year) as well as the approach of examination season with the fourth term looming. For the Gr.12s this is the last opportunity to put the nose to the grindstone for the final examination. You have come a long way and we believe in every single one of you! It is of the utmost importance that learners are guided and supported in this time. The pressure on our children can be overwhelming. Elke klas het die geleentheid ontvang om n koek te versier wat op die skool se verjaarsdag beoordeel is. Die 3 wenners was: In eerste plek die graad 9A1klas, tweede was die graad 10A1-klas en derde was die graad 8A5-klas. 5 EISTEDDFOD TYGERBERG INTERNATIONAL DANCE EISTEDDFOD CATEGORY 1: SOLO CONTEMPORARY DANCE YEARS Brackenfell High learners attained the top three positions in the following categories: THIRD PLACE: Bronze award - Alicia Matthyssen with 88 % SECOND PLACE: Silver award - Chanelle Field with 99 % FIRST PLACE: Gold award Krystn Hockey with 95 % Krystn Hockey is also the overall winner. Other solo participants: Tyra Abrahams received 87 % and Ruben Fourie 84 %. CATEGORY 2: LARGE GROUP CONTEMPORARY DANCE YEARS Brackenfell High learners attained the top three positions in the following categories: THIRD PLACE: Bronze award Grade 10 class with 81 % SECOND PLACE: Silver award Grade 12 class with 86 % FIRST PLACE: Gold award Grade 11 with 95 % The grade 11 class is also the overall winner.

6 MUSIC BRAKKIES SHOW THEIR WORTH AT TYGERBERG NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD 17 Music learners took part in six different categories of the recent Tygerberg Eisteddfod: piano, recorder, violin, cello, trumpet and singing. In total the Brakkies participated in 32 items and received 16 Honours and 8 Highest Honours awards! Brackenfell High was also represented by the choir (Merit award), the instrumental ensemble (Merit award) and the vocal ensemble (Highest Honours). Four of our violin and cello learners also participated in the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod and achieved five Silver and two Silver plus certificates. Nicholas Miso has been invited to take part in auditions for the Gala evening. Congratulations to these music learners who represent our school in this manner. Under the great tutelage of Ms Denise Bester and Ms Gezania de Jongh, our drama group participated in the Tygerberg National Eisteddfod with their production called Die Avonture van Tyl Uilspiëel. Congratulations to this group of talented learners who received the Best Ensemble Award. This same group participated in the ATKV-competition held at Durbanville High School on 29 August Brackenfell High School is proud of these learners achievements. 7

8 SOSIALE MEDIA MNR J BENADIE, ADJUNKHOOF Of jy iets via n WhatsApp-groep, Facebook, Twitter of Instagram vir mense stuur, sal hierdie inhoud hanteer word asof jy dit op die voorblad vir n koerant gepubliseer het. Anonimiteit is n mite op die internet. Jy kan inhoud onder n skuilnaam publiseer, maar IT-kundiges het maniere om jou op te spoor of hulle kan jou net deur jou RICA-registrasie of GPS-ligging vind. Sodra inligting in n digitale formaat is, is dit heeltemal buite jou beheer. Ongeag die storms wat jy kan veroorsaak deur die grense van vryheid van spraak oor onderwerpe van ras, godsdiens en/of politiek te skuif of om jou ontevredenheid oor jou werkgewer uit te spreek, kan dit jou ook werkloos laat. As jy jou werkgewer in oneer bring en jou plig van goeie trou en lojaliteit versaak, of jou gedrag het n negatiewe uitwerking op die diensverhouding, kan jy ontslaan word. Om inhoud te skep en dit self op sosiale media te plaas, is nie die enigste manier waarop jy in n sosiale media-flater betrokke kan raak nie. Sodra iemand die inhoud van ander op die internet begin versprei, word n ketting van publikasie geskep. Enigeen in die ketting van die publikasie van onwettige, immorele of ongrondwetlike inhoud kan verantwoordelik gehou word. Jy word deel van die ketting wanneer jy: 1. Deel / retweet / inhoud aanstuur. 2. As jy net n plasing like / favourite. 3. n Opmerking oor die inhoud maak of op kommentaar reageer. 4. Of as jy in die inhoud gemerk is, of as iemand dit op jou bladsy plaas. Ons het n verantwoordelikheid om kinders op te voed om goeie digitale burgers te wees. As jy ontstel word deur wat jy op sosiale media sien, poog dan ook om die wesenlike effek op n kind wie se lewe ook op sosiale media afspeel, se emosioneleen ontwikkelingswelsyn te begryp en daarmee te simpatiseer. Gebruik die eenvoudige THINK-metode voordat jy iets op sosiale media stuur of deel: T is it True? H is it Helpful? I is it Inspiring? N is it Necessary? K is it Kind? Kuberboeliery is een van die grootste oorsake van depressie in ons moderne tyd en moet aangemeld word, aan nie net die skool en ouers nie, maar ook aan owerhede. Die slagoffers van kuberboeliery kan by die naaste landdroshof aansoek doen om n beskermingsbevel ingevolge die Wet op Beskerming teen Teistering, 2011 (Wet 17 van 2011). Dit is byna onmoontlik om die internet en sosiale media en die uitwerking daarvan op die samelewing te ignoreer. En, moenie vergeet om die skerms so nou en dan af te skakel nie en sê vir die kinders om te gaan speel.. in die natuur. Verkorte artikel van Rose-Ann Lyon (SAOU) Om in n plasing gemerk te wees, is dalk nie n direkte aksie wat jy geneem het om die inhoud verder te versprei nie, maar sodra jy die vermoë het om onsmaaklike of onwettige inhoud (of enige inhoud) te kan verwyder en jy kies om dit nie te doen nie, word jy gesien as deel van die ketting van publikasie. 8

9 2 LID TO QUIT GRADE 10A1 WINNERS OF THE 2 LID TO QUIT CLASS COMPETITION. Teens@comm launched the 2 lid to quit during 2017 and donated the lids to the SMILE organisation. At the beginning of 2018 two learners in the grade 8A2 class (Chris- Mari Joubert and Chanelle Mattee) notified Ms L Pretorius that they had initiated a similar project at Brackenfell Primary school, specifically collecting lids for a wheelchair. At the end of 2017 they had to collect 450 kg of lids for one wheelchair, but were short of 110 kg of lids. A class competition was therefore initiated at Brackenfell High. With our first collection we received 320 kg of lids, exceeding our first target by far, we only needed 220 kg of lids for a second wheelchair. The grade 10A1 class collected 19 black bags of lids and were announced as the winners. Our Brakkies collected a total number of 520 kg of lids. I would like to thank each learner, parent and teacher for his/her contribution to this project. One of the wheelchairs will be donated to Tygerberg Hospital. Seeing that we have an extra wheelchair, we urge you to please contact the school if somebody in the community urgently needs a wheelchair. 9

10 S-PROJEK TYDENS ONS S-PROJEK HET ONS SANITÊRE DOEKIES INGESAMEL VIR N LAERSKOOL IN ELSIESRIVIER S. POTGIETER, ADJUNKHOOF Tydens ons S-projek het ons sanitêre doekies ingesamel vir n laerskool in Elsiesrivier. Die dogters daar is baie arm en bly elke maand n paar dae by die huis, omdat hulle nie sanitêre doekies kan bekostig nie. Ons het deelgeneem aan die projek wat deur Tracey Laing van die TVprogram, Tussen Ons (kanaal 145) van stapel gestuur is. Ons het 6944 doekies oorhandig tydens die opname van hierdie program. Cherise Swart, Nicole van der Kolff en Bernadette Swanepoel het die skool verteenwoordig. Nicole het vir die gehoor vertel van ons projek, waarna die adjunkhoof van die Laerskool Balvenie die donasies in ontvangs geneem het. Die program is op Donderdag 30 Augustus 2018 om 20:00 uitgesaai op kanaal 145. Baie dankie aan almal wat bydraes gelewer het! Dit het n verskil gemaak! 10

11 ATKV ATKV LET S-TAKE-HANDS PROJECT A big celebration was held on Thursday 30 August 2018 after two years of hard work by Mr Johan Kotze, Mr Deon Beukes, Mrs Sandra Kotze, Ms Lizelle Pretorius, Ms Mireille Pieters and Ms M Smit. This wonderful initiative would not have been possible without the input of the Teens@com, Interact associations, the music department as well as the grade 8 LO project. It was held at the Pioneer School in Worcester. The multisensory garden, play area, climbing frames and outside gymnasium were inaugurated with the support of Afrikaans. com, SBA and NWU. Hemelbesem entertained the visitors, braille books were handed out and the visitors could admire the garden and music instruments. Our music learners performed at the culture festival in the evening. The project only ends in January 2019, but our school will remain actively involved. 11

Die Hoërskool Brackenfell het die Battle of the Blood donors teen Hoërskool De Kuilen en Hoërskool Monument Park gewen. Die Hoërskool Brackenfell het altesaam 113 eenhede bloed geskenk en het 67 nuwe skenkers gehad. Baie dankie vir elke Brakkie wat die wêreld n bietjie beter gemaak het. INTERACT THE INTERACT GROUP OF BRACKENFELL HIGH SCHOOL WAS ONCE AGAIN MOTIVATED TO MAKE A CHANGE THIS TERM. They kicked off with an outreach to the Pioneer School on 28 July 2018.

Bricks were also painted and the learners ensured that everything is now spick and span. The next outreach was One to One on 19 August 2018.

13 INTERACT THE INTERACT GROUP OF BRACKENFELL HIGH SCHOOL WAS ONCE AGAIN MOTIVATED TO MAKE A CHANGE THIS TERM. They kicked off with an outreach to the Pioneer School on 28 July The learners helped with the weeding to prepare the garden for the open day of the ATKV let stake-hands project organised by Afrikaans.com. Bricks were also painted and the learners ensured that everything is now spick and span. The next outreach was One to One on 19 August The Interactors who participated spent a few hours with physically / mentally handicapped people. They played games with their companions and got to know each other better. The last outreach was the termly sandwich project on 28 Agust The learners of Brackenfell High School were asked to bring sandwiches and fruit to school, which were personally and cheerfully handed out by the Interactors at the Kraaifontein day clinic: Service above self. 13

PRESTASIES GIS OLIMPIADE Leerders het deelgeneem aan n GIS-Olimpiade te CPUT. Hulle het twee aktiwiteite gedoen: GIS aktiwiteit, waar die leerders die program moes gebruik om antwoorde in te vul.

Die volgende aktiwiteit was n GPS-aktiwiteit waar hulle punte moes besoek en antwoorde kry. Dit was groot pret en die leerders het toe algeheel tweede geëindig uit die 12 skole wat deelgeneem het. Die Graad 11-leerders was Enrique de Villiers, Marelé van Breda en Kyle Dryden wat deelgeneem het. 14

15 ENGLISH OLYMPIAD We are very proud of Cherith Millward (Gr.12) who attained 8th position in the FAL section of the De Beers English Olympiad. In the HL section, Connor Cogill (Gr.12) achieved Gold, whereas Bronwyn Dearden (Gr.12), Krystn Hockey (Gr.12) and Durandt Duvenage (Gr.11) earned Silver Diplomas. Congratulations to these hardworking and talented learners! 15

Hy gaan aan n jaarlikse Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskunde Spankompetisie (SAMTC) deelneem. Simonet Kapp en Rebecca Venter in 12 A3 het die Bio-Science Wiskunde Geletterdheid Olimpiade geskryf en onder die top 3 IN DIE LAND geëindig! 21 OUR U19A HOCKEY BOYS We would like to congratulate our U19A hockey boys on their 1st place achievement in the 2018 Kraaifontein Schools Festival. Congratulations also to the U19B girls hockey team and the U19B boys hockey team on their 3rd place achievements at the Kraaifontein Schools Festival. We are extremely proud of these teams. Congratulations to Valen Muthien from Brackenfell High School for winning Gold in the U18 Kraaifontein Schools Festival for Table Tennis. Valen also assisted his hockey team in their Gold medal win for hockey and received the Best Goalkeeper award at the festival. Boithabiso Mokhalimetso, MiCayla Rossouw and Ian Pretorius have all received awards for Best defender. Well done! 21

The Tennis A and B teams took part in the Inter Provincial between WP, EP Platteland and Albany. The A and B teams won the Tournament and received Western Province colours. 23 CHESLIN KOLBE Hoërskool Brackenfell is baie trots op ons oudbrakkie Cheslin Kolbe. Cheslin is gekies as die 911ste rugbyspeler om vir die SA Springbokke uit te draf. Hy het ook al springbokklere vir Sewes-rugby verwerf. Ons wens Cheslin alle voorspoed en sukses toe met sy rugbyloopbaan. Hulle speel ook in die WP 0/19 Currie Cup. Ons wens die twee spelers alle voorspoed toe met hulle rugbyloopbane. WP WILSON TENNIS TOURNAMENT Tiffany Pienaar participated in the Western Province Wilson Tennis Tournament held in Rondebosch during September. She is the champion in the U14 age group.
