Photo: Thomas Moss Jaco Marais and Alexander Klose Paul Roos has once again shown that it can deliver top athletes in various areas. Matric learner Rossouw Bekker is the new Junior Mountain Biking African Champion. He won the XCO Continental African Championships held in Mauritius on 12 May, where he had to compete against the best South African mountain bikers, as well as athletes from other African countries. Rossouw flew to this idyllic island a few days before the race to acclimatise and practise the course. Altitude difference and foreign terrain can be a big challenge in cross-country racing, which consists of a certain amount of laps around the course. It is a very intense form of racing, with fitness and technical skills being equally important. Van Staden het sy kinderjare in Port Elizabeth deurgebring en het aan die Hoërskool Cillié gematrikuleer. Hy het ook aan die universiteit in sy geboortestad gestudeer en spog met n BA-graad sowel as n Hoër Onderwysdiploma. Hy het in die tagtigs sy onderwysloopbaan by Grey High begin. Tien jaar later is hy as adjunkhoof by Pearson High aangestel, en na n paar jaar het hy skoolhoof daar geword. Hy vertel dat hy graag met jongmense werk en dat hy n groot passie vir sy vak, Afrikaans, Treading deep tracks into history Springbok on wheels live for cycling. Rossouw is the second Paul Rooser to win this championship after Stephan Senekal, who won in He is the co-captain of Paul Roos s mountain biking team, which is currently ranked first in the Western Cape and one of the top teams in the country. He and his team will certainly make their appearance in Semper a few more times this year, especially as Rossouw will represent the Bri-tish Development Road het. Hy meen passie is n bepalende faktor in die sukses van n skool, en dat n aanhoudende strewe na uitnemendheid ook noodsaaklik is. Mnr. van Staden is iemand wat sy werk as Rektor ernstig opneem, n mens kry die indruk dat hy n perfeksionis is. Terselfdertyd beskou hy homself as n gesinsman, wat dit geniet om saam met sy familie en vriende te kuier. Hy hou ook daarvan om n bietjie te oefen. Hy meen dat n mens aanpasbaar moet wees en die dapperheid moet hê om uitdagings aan te pak. Mnr. van Staden glo dat dissipline die hoeksteen van n goeie opvoeding is en dat reëls oor skooldrag en hare streng toegepas moet word. Netheid, meen hy, is nie onderhandelbaar nie. Hy ag dit belangrik dat n skool sy leerders moet aanmoedig om in alle fasette van die lewe na uitnemendheid te streef en hulle sodoende in Bike Team (Backstedt HotChillee) in Belgium on 11 July, followed by a 3-day stage race International, the Junioren Rundfahrt, in Austria from July. staat moet stel om hul volle potensiaal te bereik. Mnr. van Staden is n sterk ondersteuner van die skool se verwelkomingsprogram, omdat hy meen dat dit leerders respek leer en hulle opvoed in die waardes en tradisies van die skool. Paul Roos se tradisies is vir hom baie belangrik. Hy is egter nie n ondersteuner van Civvie-dae nie. Skoolhoofde het volgens mnr. Van Staden nie werklik vrye tyd nie, omdat hul werk n konstante verantwoordelikheid is. Wanneer hy egter af en toe n blaaskansie het, geniet hy dit om te lees of te oefen. Inspirerende boeke, biografieë van suksesvolle mense en spannende speurverhale is sy gunstelingleesstof. Mnr. Van Staden is ongetwyfeld reeds n ingeburgerde lid van die Paul Roos-familie. 2 Semper 2 Current Affairs Aktueel World Leaders Simon Brand Cleopatra, Napoleon, Hitler and Gandhi were all exceptionally powerful world leaders whose decisions have shaped the course of human history. Today there are a great many such leaders, and the decisions they make impact on our lives every day. Leadership requires great intelligence, wisdom and integrity. Regretfully, we often see these qualities lacking in our world leaders. Meet five of today s most powerful people. Mei 2017 Photos: Supplied Kim-Jong Un Kim-Jong Un, president of North Korea, prefers being addressed as Supreme Leader, Guiding Sun Ray, Ever-Victorious, Iron-Willed Commander and Shining Star of Paektu Mountain. He is one of the world s last remaining dictators. Very little is known about his childhood. Even his birth date is disputed. He used to be an ardent fan of Jackie Chan. Un continues to develop nuclear weapons and has threatened the US with pre-emptive nuclear attacks on numerous occasions. His newly-implemented economic policies are similar to those of China. The North Korean government keeps its citizens thoroughly indoctrinated by retaining utter control over the media, not allowing access to the internet and executing or imprisoning anyone who opposes government, often along with their loved ones. Defectors from the country report that guards attempt to kill anyone who tries to cross the border. The United Nation s view is that he should be held accountable for crimes against humanity. Kim-Jong Un refrains from eye contact when shaking hands with other leaders. He owns a private island and has a habit of importing luxury goods for personal use, for example saunas to recover from hangovers, as he likes to drink and party all night like his father, according to diplomatic sources. Donald Trump Everyone knows the real estate tycoon and reality TV-star who became president of the United States. He attended the New York Military Academy and boasts a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He started his business career with what he calls a small loan of one million dollars from his father, took over the family real estate firm, and inherited a further estimated $40 million in His hotel and casino businesses were declared bankruptcy six times and he has been implicated in a number of dubious business practices. Large banks consider Trump untrustworthy and are unwilling to lend him money. His businesses have been involved in a staggering court cases. Trump is known for his anti-immigrant rhetoric, his bitterness towards the mainstream media, his all-too-noticeable spray tan and his excessive use of Twitter. According to Politifact, 70% of statements he makes are mostly false, at best. Most of his supporters see him as someone who will destroy establishment politics, and who will bring about the change that Democrats and old-fashioned Republicans have failed to produce. Trump will no doubt radically alter the political landscape of the USA, but whether this will be a change for the better remains to be seen. Xi Jinping Jinping (born in Beijing, 1953) is the president of the People s Republic of China. His education was interrupted by the Cultural Revolution ( ), a movement towards reinforcing communist ideals and Mao Zedong s dictatorship. Jinping studied Chemical Engineering before obtaining a Doctorate in Law. His administration claims to be developing the country towards the Chinese Dream, through among other things a scientific outlook on development. It strictly censors citizens internet use, and legislation allows for anyone with anti-government views to be prosecuted. China is one of the BRICS-countries, proud of its rapid economic growth. Jinping, known as Mr. Clean for his hard-line stance against corruption, is ranked fourth in the New Statesman list of the world s most influential people. Vladimir Putin The current president of the Russian Federation, born in 1952, grew up in St Petersburg during the Cold War ( ), studied Law at Leningrad State University and started his career as a member of the KGB. His political escapades took off in 1990, just before the end of the Cold War. Putin is quite possibly the richest man alive, with an estimated net worth of up to $200 billion more than twice that of Bill Gates. He is suspected of having obtained these assets through corruption, but he denies owning any of them. His critics and political opponents often die or have their careers ruined under suspicious circumstances. Under his rule many laws have been passed to restrict dissent against the government. Russia is not known for freedom of expression. However, the Russian GDP has, under Putin s watch, been growing at a steady pace to be expected from a country emerging from economic ruin. His government is staunchly conservative, favouring cultural preservation over globalism. Most Russians admire Putin as a strong and decisive leader. His future in Russian politics is secure. Emmanuel Macron In the May elections Macron (39) became France s youngest national leader since Napoleon Bonaparte, winning more that 66% of the vote. Despite being raised in a non-religious family, Macron was baptised a Roman Catholic at the age of 12 at his own request. He received most of his schooling in his home town, Amiens. At the age of 15 he developed a relationship with Brigitte Auzieré, a married drama teacher with three children who later became his wife. Macron studied Philosophy in Paris. He has worked as an advisor in the French Ministry of Economy and as an investment banker at Rothchild & Cie Banque. He joined the Socialist Party in 2006, serving as Minister of Economy and Finance in president Hollande s cabinet. In 2016 he formed an independent political party, En Marche. Soon after he resigned from government to run for president in Macron is largely seen as centrist, and describes himself as neither right nor left. He favours free trade and the European Union, and has expressed support for Angela Merkel s open door policy towards refugees. He is a secularist, but promotes religious freedom and has openly opposed proposals to ban Muslim headscarves. Another priority of Macron s is the reduction of fossil fuel usage and a speedier transition towards clean energy.

Verandering is n konsep wat elke huidige Paul Rooser intens beleef en probeer verstaan. Paul Roos is tans in n fase van verandering; aan die begin van n nuwe era, die mnr. Van Staden-era. Met die verandering van Rektor kan definitiewe verandering verwag word. Sonder verandering maak roetine en eentonigheid alles dood. Nuwe koppe, nuwe idees. Daar is n nuwe idee voorgestel wat al klaar baie reaksie ontlok het: die inbring van Paul Roos-sakke. Hierdie idee is nie regtig nuut aan Paul Roos-leerders nie, maar dit is nog nie effektief ingestel nie. As daar verander moet word aan die sakke-beleid moet daar eers deeglike huiswerk oor hierdie kwessie gedoen word. Tans word n paar sakke vir nuwe leerders en Graad 8 s aanbeveel, maar dit het ook nie lank geduur voordat die yskastasse Duits as derde taal maak deure oop vir almal Heinrich Rode Hoe ontmoet n mens nóg mooi meisies, maak nuwe vriende en skaf n klomp winskopies aan terwyl die Rand al wéér n duik vat? Neem Duits! Die Duitse Studietoer is eintlik n akademiese uitruil, georganiseer deur me. Alet Conradie en me. Justyna Sobota van die LOTE Gymnasium in Cieszyn, Pole: die skool saam met wie se leerders Paul Roosers via n internetplatform Duits leer. Die toergroep van 12 leerders, gekoester deur me. Conradie se inspirerende leierskap en me. Hesti van der Mescht se onmoontlike sin vir humor, is op 17 Maart weg Europa toe met die Poolse hoofstad as eerste bestemming: Warskou met sy pragtige parke, prentjiemooi kastele en wonderlike atmosfeer. Die historiese belang van Warskou het me. Dit duur nie lank voor die sakke uitmekaar begin val nie. Dit maak nie sin om dieselfde, maklik verrineweerbare sak te koop nie, en dit is hoekom Paul Roosers n ander, meer betroubare sak sal koop. Die ideaal is om sakke van uitnemende kwaliteit, slegs vir die skool, te maak. Die sakke moet van n goeie kwaliteit wees, dit moet ook stylvol en gemaklik wees om die guns van die Maroen Masjien te wen. Hierdie proses kan nie oornag gebeur nie. Die infasering van Paul Roos-sakke moet n geleidelike proses wees. Van die seniors kan dit beswaarlik na n Bison-park; n reservaat vir uile en valke (die voëls word daar geleer om die rotplae by lughawens en in winkelsentrums onder beheer te hou); die somerpaleis van die Poolse president in die berge; die pragtige stad Krakau (waar Schindler s List afspeel); en n klavier- en simfoniekonsert in Katowice om maar n paar te noem. Ons interaktiewe manier van Duits leer is voortgesit deur aanbiedings vir die skool, dagboekinskrywings, taaloefeninge in ons spesiaal saamgestelde toerhandleidings en gesprekke in Duits met mede-leerders en onderwysers. Ons verblyf in Wene was n eg Oostenrykse Jeugherberg, waar die wondermooi stad op ons voorstoep was. Vandaar het ons Wene se Natuurhistoriese Museum besoek, asook onder meer die Stefanskatedraal (343 trappies boontoe verskaf n asemrowende blik oor Wene!) en Schönbrunn-Paleis, met sy asemrowende uitsigte en verwag word om nuwe sakke te koop, want dit maak nie sin om duisende rande uit te gee vir n sak wat net vir twee jaar gebruik gaan word nie. Befondsing sal dalk beskikbaar gestel moet word vir dié leerders wat dit nie kan bekostig om nuwe sakke te koop nie. Verandering is moeilik en hierdie is n sensitiewe saak wat baie aandag en bespreking verg. tuine. Na ons besoek aan München was al die Bayern-München-toeskouerwinkels totaal en al uit voorraad, want Johann Mocke (onder andere!) kon homself net nie inhou nie. Almal is dit eens: dis nogal lekker om inkopies te doen in n vreemde land waarvan jy die taal goed genoeg kan praat om jouself behoorlik te handhaaf. Dit gee jou so n effense voorsprong bo die vervelige twéétaliges... Die beeld van Paul Roos is goed, maar Paul Roos moet streef na uitnemendheid. Dit is hoekom verandering noodsaaklik is. Elke Paul Rooser moet die leuse Semper Splendidior, altyd meer uitnemend, uitdra. Soos Andy Warhol sê; They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. Vanuit München het ons onder meer die Dachau konsentrasiekamp besoek op n toepaslik bewolkte dag, want daar het ons inligting van so n ontstellende aard ingeneem dat die wêreld vir n paar ure net n donker wolk was, met geen silwer randjie nie... Maar die létterlike hoogtepunt van die toer, die hoogste piek in die Duitse Alpe, Zugspitze (2962m), was die grootste pret op aarde, met die sneeubedekte omgewing, ongekende vlakke van koud kry en veral die Mini-Bobs waarmee ons ure lank by die sneeubane kon afgly. Na hierdie ongelooflike en onvergeetlike studietoer kan ek van één ding getuig: Duits as derde taal is werklik vir Paul Roos-leerders n deur waaragter wonderlike geleenthede wag; en die deur is nie eens te moeilik om oop te maak nie jy kan die vak net hier by jou eie skool onder die knie kry. Niks kan egter vergelyk met die wonderlike verhoudings wat ons tydens ons verblyf in Pole opgebou het nie. Ons afskeid was hartseer, maar nou sien ons uit na ons Poolse vriende se besoek in 2018.

4 Semper 4 Culture Kultuur Paul Roos Gimnasium se Epic (Fail) Musical: n suksesvolle mislukking Mei 2017 Foto: JD West Die Sanggroep met die Hogwarts Medley, een van die hoogtepunte van PRG se onlangse musikale blyspel, n aand van katastrofe en chaos, waar alles wat moontlik verkeerd kon gaan, verkéérd gegaan het met opset: mnr. Bezuidenhout se "briljante idee", nadat hy 'n paar opvoerings van musiekblyspele bygewoon het waar dinge maar rof afgeloop het. Groot treffers uit onder meer Joseph's Technicolour Dreamcoat, Beauty and the Beast en Into the Woods het die gehoor gaande gehad soos ook die koor se asembenemende weergawe van Footloose. Die Epic Fail Musical was 'n groot mislukking, en juis dáárom 'n volkome sukses. Francois du Toit In die Paul Roos-gemeenskap is daar altyd plek vir nuwe vaardighede en talente, én vir vars gesigte. Paul Roos was dié kwartaal gelukkig genoeg om mnr. Cezarre Strydom in die PRG-Musiekdepartement te verwelkom. Volgens Musiekvakhoof mnr. Stephan Bezuidenhout gaan dit n loutere plesier wees om n Nuwe Rat in die Maroen Masjien saam met mnr. Strydom te werk, aangesien mnr. Strydom, benewens sy onderrigverpligtinge, ook as amptelike koorbegeleier vir Paul Roos sal dien. Hoewel almal weet dat daar eintlik niemand soos ons unieke mnr. Bezuidenhout is nie, lyk mnr. Strydom, met stoppelbaard, swartgeraamde bril en langerige hare amper soos mnr. Bezuidenhout se mini-me. Mnr. Strydom, net soos mnr. Bezuidenhout, was n dosent by die Universiteit van die Vrystaat, en ons het hier te doen met twee unieke en uiters talentvolle persoonlikhede wat albei slaggereed is om saam met me. Wikje du Preez (wat tans deeltyds by die Departement Musiek uithelp), die Musiekdepartment op sy tone te hou. Hulle het dit reeds met The Epic Fail Musical en bekoor! gedoen (kyk bladsye 4 en 5), en ons kan nog veel meer opwinding te wagte wees. Ons is baie dankbaar dat mnr. Strydom deel gaan raak van die Paul Roos-familie. Hy het op Michigan gematrikuleer en speel verskeie instrumente soos viool, klavier en eufonium. Ons kan met n rustige hart sê dat mnr. Strydom se leerders in goeie hande is. Paul Roos sien uit om hom van nader te leer ken.

Kore van Bloemhof, Hoërskool Stellenbosch en Hoërskool De Kuilen het opgetree, en die gehoor is ook vermaak deur kunstenaars soos Grethe van der Merwe. Die aand is afgesluit met n uitvoering deur die Paul Roos-koor. Concert of the semester: Jeremy Loops - Trading Change Daniel de Villiers Whether it be for the social appeal or simply for the love of the music, each and every one of us will at some stage flock to a certain venue to see how our favourite albums come to life before our eyes. This may be in the form of a relaxed picnic on a wine farm as the sun sets on the mountain or a night of sweaty, moving masses of bodies, and shouting while the lead guitarist shreds it out on his Fender. Concerts are escape pods from the pressures of work and life and are suited for every individual's interests. An event by a South African folk musician does not always grab the same attention as something like Ultra, but in the case of Jeremy Loops, the skill involved and fun created certainly equals it. Jeremy Loops (aka Jeremy Hewitt) is a fellow Capetonian and originally from Kommetjie. In 2014, Jeremy Loops took the South African music industry by storm with the release of his debut album Trading Change. Since then he has travelled the world performing gigs in many other countries such as the United States of America, England, France and Australia playing with the likes of Twenty-One Pilots. The attribute that sets him apart of most musicians is his skill and use of the Loop Pedal (hence Jeremy Loops). A loop pedal is a tool used to layer different voices and tunes to create an intricate melody without the need of a full band and, in his case, allows him to leave his audience and listeners in awe. Not only is his music fun to listen to but his stage personality is one Renier Hattingh Rhenish performed a localised musical version of Cinderella in the Japie Krige Hall on 2 and 3 May. Director and writer, Natalie Kitching (Grade 12), saw the need for the Ugly Stepsisters to be played by males and many Paul Roosers auditioned for various parts. The musical was thoroughly enjoyed by three audiences, with the final night seeing the Japie s walls bend outwards. The seven Paul Rooser actors/singers/dancers included Willem Swartz as Prince Helderberg, Joshua Cloete as Oom Polla, Ben de Swardt and Photo: Supplied of note. Recently, he performed at the annual Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts and at Parklife in Cape Town with Francois van Coke and Matthew Mole. And if you happen to be in Paris from the 22 July to the 23 July, you can catch him at Lollapalooza Concert, featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Imagine Dragons and Lana Del Rey. Hy is atleties, in die top tien vir akademie, en jou ouers vra altyd hoekom jy nie meer soos hy kan wees nie. Elke ding wat hy doen is perfek, en al die goeie goed gebeur altyd met hom. Partykeer wonder jy self of jy nie dalk soos hy wil wees nie, maar dan onthou jy dat dit moeilik is om asem te haal as jy n masker aan het. Ons almal weet dat hy bestaan. Ons weet van sy prestasies, ons weet van sy meisie(s). Maar nie een van ons ken hom, of weet wie hy is nie. Ons weet net wie hy wys. Elke onderwyser sal oor hom praat, en hom heel moontlik vereer, en natuurlik sal hý, wat so voorbeeldig en oulik is, iets hê om oor húlle te sê. Die seun wat altyd veel te sê het, sou dit sonder twyfel direk sê en die gevolge dra, maar ongelukkig het hierdie masker vir hom n hele ruggraat gekos. Om hom te vertrou met enige storie is vreeslik maklik, want jy kan seker wees dat hierdie betroubare jong man nooit die storie presies sal oorvertel nie. Hy sal n ander storie opdis, wat alles vir hom beter en vir jou slegter maak. Dit is tog nie dieselfde storie nie, maar as dit jou regtig so baie pla, kan jy dit net ignoreer. Dit is tog maklik om goed te ignoreer as hulle agter jou rug gebeur. Almal wat hom goed ken, het net goeie goed om van hom te sê, en dis iets waarmee min mense kan spog. Hy het wel n onregverdige voordeel, aangesien níémand hom góéd ken nie. Hy hoef nooit, soos die meeste mense, uit te kyk of agter hom te kyk vir mense wat hom in die rug sal steek nie. Maar soos wat daar al vasgestel is, sal hy nie aangespreek kan word óf baklei nie danksy sy gebrek aan n ruggraat. Elke mens het n masker wat hy slegs vir party mense sal afhaal. Ongelukkig weet ons hoofkarakter nie meer of daar iets agter al sy maskers is nie. Hy ruil hulle al so lank en so dikwels om, dat hy al te bang is om die lewe sonder n masker aan te pak.

7 Mei 2017 Onderprestasie: Onderwêreld In Review Semper 7 Reviews Resensies Luke White Vandat die Graad 12 s vanjaar met Fanie Viljoen te doen gekry het, word name soos Daleen Mathee en Anoeschka von Meck ewe skielik gemis. Kyk, die onderwerp is dalk heel aanvaarbaar, maar die storie sleep ongelooflik traag verby. Dit handel oor 'n matriekleerder (Greg) wat ʼn kuberkraker bevriend (dis nou n hacker en nee, moenie sleg voel nie, daar is ook nie één matriek wat dít geweet het nie). Hierdie ou (Eckardt) leer vir Greg ʼn paar toertjies... en op die ou end is dit een gróót flous wat uiteindelik n farmaseutiese maatskappy se planne om n nuwe dodelike siekte te kweek én uit te roei, ontrafel. Dan beland ons protagonis se pa in vet moeilikheid, want hy was ook by die skandes betrokke en oor die algemeen is dit maar een groot getjommel met n vrot einde. Ek bewonder Fanie vir die boodskap wat hy probeer oordra: dat geld gewone mense dryf tot onmenslike optredes, maar ek is bevrees dit bereik slegs 'n handjievol lesers. Dié wat nie deur hul Afrikaans-onderwysers gedwing word om dit klaar te lees nie, sal beslis ná 'n paar hoofstukke moed verloor. Die storielyn spring meer rond as vlooie op 'n hond en ek sweer dis ewe frustrerend Die skryfwerk is ook n pyn in die pens met al die kens eenwoordsinne. Om op te som: die jonger grade wat so baie kla oor hul voorgeskrewe werke, hou op sanik en geniet dit solank julle kan, want Onderwêreld is eintlik Raka. En dit gaan aanhou om Matrieks in die modder te vertrap as iemand nie vir ons n boek kan vind wat ons kan lees sonder om aan die slaap te raak nie! Etienne Britz Hacksaw Ridge, chosen by the American Film Institute as one of its top ten films of the year, is a war film directed by Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield as protagonist. It tells the true story of Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector during the second World War, and highlights the struggles that Desmond had to endure because of his refusal to carry firearms while voluntarily taking part in the war. The end result is a masterfully executed tale of bravery in the face of enormous pressure to conform to the army's notion of what the actions of a good soldier should entail. The film is a spectacular showcase of Mel Gibson's directing genius (as borne out by his Hacksaw Ridge Dienste wat deur my verskaf word: Oscar for Best Director), and shines among the other blockbuster movies released during Through all the violent action, Gibson reflects his strong Catholicism by applying a deeply religious motive to the film. The dialogue is crisp and humorous. The story is engaging and will often keep you at the edge of your seat. Unfortunately, the movie suffers from pacing issues. The first and second acts are long build-ups to the third act. This causes the epic third act to feel rather short, which may disappoint some viewers. Regardless, the first two acts contain enough plot points to keep you interested throughout the film. The film is a prime example of Simon Duggan s excellent cine- Photo: Supplied matography. Camera shots are immersive and clearly present what is going on in particularly intense moments. Duggan refrains from using the dreadful shaky type of camera effects which appear in movies like The Hunger Games and Taken. Each scene's colour palette matches its tone, which helps set an atmosphere. The movie's smooth editing helped Hacksaw Ridge win an Academy Award for Best Editing. On top of it all, the film offers excellent sound design rarely found in cinema. Hacksaw Ridge defends the right of anyone to sign up for the army purely in order to save lives, and undoubtedly achieves its goal. 8 Semper 8 Tot siens Mei 2017 Foto: Nic de Jager Editorial Thomas Butler As die meeste van ons aan verandering dink, is ons eerste gedagte negatief dis iets vreemds, dit maak ons angstig en dit kan dalk moeilik wees om te hanteer. Verandering kom ongelukkig algemeen voor, elkeen van ons word dikwels daarmee gekonfronteer en niemand van ons se lewe word daarteen gevrywaar nie. Nou is die vraag: Wat hou verandering vir ons in? Is verandering iets positiefs of is dit negatief? Of hang dit af van hoe jy daarna kyk? Change is probably one of the most feared things by us humans. But why do we fear it so much? Usually it is not the process of change that is being feared, but the new, uncertain or unfamiliar things that accompany change. You may be scared that your new morning routine will result in you missing the bus to school. Or you may feel apprehensive about the new Rector and what his presence will bring to the school. My advice is: don t be afraid of change although change may make you lose something good, you may gain something even better once you embrace the change. Verandering lei gewoonlik tot iets nuuts. Yes, I agree, change can be a tough thing to deal with, because of the lack of control you have over it and the fact that the new situation it brings can be strange and uncertain. Change can,however, bring new opportunities that might help you to grow as a person and you might alight a better person after confronted by change. We don t grow when things are easy. It is when we are forced out of our comfort zone and faced with challenges that we have to handle, that growth happens. Die feit bly staan dat verandering ons pad op n gereelde basis gaan kruis. Ons as skool, maar ook as land, is in n wonderlike fase in die geskiedenis. Alhoewel verandering voorkom en dit die nuwe en ongekende inhou, kan veranderinge in ons omstandighede ook lei tot nuwe, opwindende, beter geleenthede en persoonlike groei. Kom ons verander die manier waarop ons na verandering kyk. Kom ons wees positief daaroor en verwelkom die volgende verandering wat ons pad kruis! 9 Mei 2017 Semper 9 A Farewell In Perspective George Huyshamer In the blink of an eye, another term at The Roos comes to an end! A term that has indeed tested the character and resilience of our mighty school. As the student council of 2016 motto stated: Often tested, always loyal, brothers forever and if we had to look back at the previous term this is exactly what happened. A few weeks into the first term of school we were presented the challenge of dealing with the measles outbreak in Stellenbosch, resulting in a whole host of Paul Roos learners being affected by the highly contagious virus. As difficult as this was, our school was really tested after the quarantine was implemented, resulting in no sports events being allowed. The pain endured after hearing we were not allowed to attend the prestigious triangular athletics was something we would all like to forget. But, as always, Paul Roos did not allow one little obstacle to set us back or break us. The way in which the situation was dealt with by our staff and learners was of the highest calibre and in saying that, I would like to commend everyone that helped us get through those few weeks. Aan die einde van verlede kwartaal moes ons ook tot siens sê aan n baie besonderse persoon, mnr. Jannie van der Westhuizen, wat na 10 jaar se onselfsugtige diens aan Paul Roos afgetree het. Ons matriekgroep was bevoorreg om ons hoërskooljare onder sy leiding deur te bring. Sy passie, integriteit en liefde vir die skool was aansteeklik en iets wat ons altyd saam met ons sal neem. Die kalm manier waarop hy konflik hanteer was n les vir ons almal en dit is iets waarna ons almal streef. Tydens hierdie kwartaal het ons skool ons nuwe rektor, mnr. Van Staden, verwelkom. Dit was vir ons skool n voorreg om Meneer te verwelkom en ons sien uit na Meneer se termyn as Rektor van Paul Roos. We hope that your experience at our school is one filled with memories and special moments, and that you feel a part of the PRG family. To our Grade 8s of 2017: after completing a full term in Paul Roos we hope that you truly feel a part of our institution. Never forget that it is a privilege to be a Paul Rooser. 10 Semper 10 Social Sosiaal Europa Uitruil Nie net Suid-Afrika se Rose het Dorings nie. Mei 2017 Christo Bester Die Europa Uitruiltoer kan as n geleentheid gesien word om die koffiewinkels van Parys, die strate van München of die kanale van Amsterdam, waarin die ikoniese rooi liggies reflekteer, te gaan verken. Of dit kan as die ideale geleentheid beskou word om saam met Europese studente die aande om te kuier en stories uit te ruil oor die dag se gebeure. Albei is ewe spesiaal en onvergeetlik. Met groot opgewondenheid het ons Parys eerste gaan verken. Ons het van die ondergrondse treine gebruik gemaak om die Stad van die Liefde te gaan verken. Van pure opgewondenheid het ons maar gesukkel om die Franse stadskaarte te verstaan, en elke treinrit het afgeskop met n hoopvolle uitroep op soek na n moontlike Afrikaaanssprekende, maar hiermee het ons helaas geen geluk gehad nie. Dit het egter ook nie lank geduur voordat ons besef het dat níémand ons kan verstaan het as ons Afrikaans praat nie. Die opsie om te sê wát jy wil, wannéér jy wil, so hárd as wat jy wil, het uitstekend by die Paul Roos-leefstyl ingepas. Natuurlik is Parys in alle opsigte verken deur rond te stap en dan by n straatkafee te gaan sit as ons voete dit nie meer kon hou nie. Party ouens, soos JannieG, het vinnig uit hul staalhokkies geklim, terwyl JamesB die Eiffel-toring as n gelukbringer beskou het. Ons Parys-uitstappie was van korte duur, maar die beste was nog op pad. Ons vertrek na Lille waar die uitruil vir die eerste keer regtig afskop. Almal is angstig en weet nie wat om te verwag nie. Die eerste ontmoeting was effens ongemaklik, maar ons het baie vinnig die Franse groep leer ken en gou besef dat die Franse maar karakters van n ander soort is. RichardtL (aka Papa Entjie) sou ten minste nie in die aande koud gekry het nie, terwyl JannieG gedink het dis beter om te gaan slaap eerder as om sy gasheer te leer ken. Party mense moes die volgende dag in die reën fietsry skool toe, terwyl die ander oorweldig is deur onafgebroke aandag van die Franse meisies. JedM was n treffer onder die dames, terwyl ChristoffS se Insta-profiel binne n kwessie van n dag deur die ganse Franse skool gevolg is. Van die algemeenste vrae waarmee ons gebombardeer is, sluit in: Why do you wear uniforms?, What do the shiny badges mean? en Do you guys still have mixed schools? Kommunikasie was nie onmoontlik nie, behalwe vir MicoH, wat slegs met sy gasfamilie kon praat indien Google Translate byderhand was, maar FreekS het dit darem reggekry om sy gasheer se sussie behoorlik te leer sokkie. Tussen dit alles deur lê ons n spesiale besoek aan Dellvillebos af om ons respek te betoon aan die Paul Roosers wat tydens die twee Wêreldoorloë gesterf het. Ons verlaat Lille met die wete dat die meeste van ons gasdames (is dit die vroulike vorm van gasheer?) geleer is om baie mooi Afrikaans te praat. Ons volgende stop is Bad Tölz, Duitsland. Daar leer ons meer oor die Duitse kultuur en sommige mense is gelukkig genoeg om n Bayern Münich-wedstryd by te woon. Party ouens vind egter geluk op ander plekke, soos JamesB wat n Girlfriendfor-a-Week-special aangeskaf het. Simon4TT het egter net aangehou waar hy in SA opgehou het, terwyl RohanVS ongelukkig nie die regte vibes afgegee het nie. AyrtonB het, na n opwindende dag in München, die eerste nederlaag in sy Train Fighting - loopbaan gely. ChristoL was ook vinnig om kommentaar te lewer, maar was self nie bewus van wat hy partykeer aanvang nie. RichardtL het egter al wéér orals waar hy gegaan het naam gemaak, en Duitsland het ons definitief gemis nadat ons weg is. Die derde en laaste land wat ons besoek het was Nederland, wat sy reputasie as n vriendelike fietsmekka oortref het. Die studente het ons hartlik op Almelo Treinstasie ontvang en het groeplede bederf deur hulle op n Sondagaand voor skool uit te vat. Dis dáárdie aand waar JohnnyVDW die mooiste 9 van sy lewe gesien het. Ons het as deel van die toer n dag saam met ons gashere in Amsterdam deurgebring, waar ons bekende museums en winkels besoek het. Daar het ons meer geleer oor die Nederlandse geskiedenis, en n mens kon maklik die ooreenkomste tussen Nederland en Suid-Afrika raaksien. Die week was maar rof en het verrassings van sy eie gehad, insluitende laat aande, unieke fietsritte en moeilike oggende. Simon4TT het floreer onder hierdie ineengeskakelde omstandighede terwyl JannieG vreemde gevoelens begin kry het. FreekS het gou n gunsteling geraak onder die meisies nadat hy sy sokkievermoëns wéér gewys het. Nederland was spesiaal en indrukwekkend. Alhoewel elke groep seker terugkom met stories van hul eie, glo ek vas die groep van 2017 het die mees unieke toer gehad wat daar tot dusver was When swimsuit season starts 2. Happy BDay! 3. 11 Mei 2017 Thomas Butler Soos jy deur die gange van Paul Roos loop is daar sekere sêgoed en klanke wat deur die gange eggo en wat in jare wat kom sal aanhou weergalm. ʼn Pouse is nie ʼn pouse as iemand nie skree Pouse begin nou eers!!! nie wanneer die twééde klok lui. ʼn Skeinatperiode is ook net ʼn Skeinatperiode as iemand vra Watter huiswerk? as die onderwyser begin boeke kyk. En die beroemde vir sommige berugte zooooom is ook al onlosmaaklik ingeburger in Paul Roos Gimnasium. Maar die mense wat vir die kenmerkendste en langlewendste eggo s sorg, is ons onderwysers. Sekere sêgoed van oud-onnies kan nou nog vaagweg gehoor word. Meneer Coena se Dagboek, handdoek, onderbroek, pen kan steeds weekliks in die gange gehoor word. So ook mnr. Werner Truter se Griffeleer, Selfde slaai, ander sous en Son trek water. Bier word suur, pap word koud. Sodra mnr. Badenhorst ʼn sin begin met So n paar jaar terug kan jy maar jou boeke wegpak: daar volg gewoonlik Eg(g)o s in die gange groot gesprekke en lang debatte. Me. Cloete se Een-van-myvriendinne-het-eendag verseker ook sonder uitsondering so ʼn af -periode. Tash, go make me some coffee en Someone help me with this computer word ook dikwels in Me. Lloyd se klas gehoor. Party eggo s is egter meer akademies van aard: jy kan byvoorbeeld seker wees van goeie rekeningkunde punte solank jy die system verstaan. Me. Kroukamp se Skeinatklasse is oor die algemeen baie produktief. Daar word egter af en toe tyd gemaak vir Verhouding-Vrydae waar daar na n bietjie meer as net intermolekulêre kragte gekyk word. Hierdie klasse is egter baie skaars en word dikwels kortgeknip met ʼn bietjie naweekhuiswerk. Na ʼn moeilike vraag uit die klas beloof mnr. Laas altyd om te gaan uitvind en dat hy sal terugkom na jou toe. Die opvolggesprekke is egter skaarser as die Paashaas. In me. Hugo se klas is alles weer belangrik vir matriek. Na ernstige lesse gee Me. Cilliers se yuuuuus gewoonlik bietjie verligting voor jy Me. Cronje se Magic Statement moet aandurf. Vir die meeste onderwysers is die kenmerkendste sêding doodeenvoudig ʼn leerder se naam, of in sommige gevalle selfs hul van en dan wéét jy daar is moeilikheid. ʼn Neels! of Meneer Pretorius! (en ons praat nie hier van die eerstespan afrigter nie) is baie meer effektief as Kan julle manne nou asseblief vir my stilbly. Die algemene Dankie! het ʼn ander betekenis in ʼn Wiskundeklas as wanneer jy vir jou suster ʼn koppie koffie gemaak het. Om nie te praat van Silence! in ʼn Engelse klas nie. Vermaak is een van die belangrikste dinge om ʼn klas se aandag te behou. n Sekere geskiedenisonderwyser gebruik graag staaltjies uit sy eie ervaring. As dit nie werk nie, is daar al beweer dat opera-sang, gym-gesprekke en tot ʼn flex of twee gebruik is om die boodskap oor te dra! Daar sal altyd eggo s in ons gange wees, party harder, ander ouer. Mnr. van Staden se boys en girls is n nuwe eggo wat heel moontlik jare lank nog deur Paul Roos se gange sal weergalm. OnderWysies Die eerste kwartaal van OnderWysies het fantastiese treffers gelewer en Semper bied graag ons tien gunstelingliedjies van die kwartaal se onderwysers aan. 1. Brief uit Bloemhof Janè Doe Bloemhoffers kop heelwat van Paul Roosers, soms meer as wat julle dink of wat ons wys. Maar: kom ons gee toe daar is baie dinge wat Bloemhoffers nié van Paul Roosers verstaan nie. Ons is seker daar is antwoorde en verduidelikings vir heelwat hiervan, maar ander goed sal verborge bly. Ons beskryf daardie dinge gewoonlik met n kopskud en "uhm, sjoe." Dis die vroulike ekwiwalent van "eish". Maar kom ons probeer om met n paar wenke tog die kloof te oorbrug. Hier is n paar goed wat punte tel by Bloemhof se dames: Graad 8's wat hoflik hul pette lig en groet wanneer ons verbystap. Hoflikheid en maniere is tydloos en sonder n rakleeftyd. As Paul Roosers net so teenwoordig is by 4M as wat Bloemhof vir Paul Roos ondersteun. n Trooswoord en skouer ná n nederlaag soos by 4M sal baie welkom wees. Saamkuier met vriende by n "braai" is lekker, maar om saam met n Paul Rooser alleen uit te gaan, is baie spesiaal. Die uitgaan word nóg beter as mnr. PRG inisiatief én besluite neem. Paul Roos se trots, gees en saamstaan. Dis iets wat ons ken, waardeer en raaksien. Nou vir die klippies in die skoen Onverwagte verrassings is dikwels lekker, maar nie as jy op die nippertjie gevra word vir n funksie wat lankal gereël is nie. Dan het jy óf laat geslaap, óf jy het al twee nee's gekry. Met n Bloemhofdans wil ons eerder energie bestee aan n besonderse aand en om mooi te lyk, as om metgeselle te soek vir Paul Roosers. Sulke versoeke is n bietjie onnatuurlik en maak dit ongemaklik vir n Bloemhofmeisie. As julle Bloemhoffers wil betrek by n funksie, formeel óf informeel, gee asseblief al die relevante inligting vroegtydig. Ons moet die inligting soms soos speurders uit julle trek! Jammer vir die taal-les, maar n mooi opmerking is goed. n Semper 11 Social Sosiaal Áánmerking as ons verby n groep van julle stap... werk nie vir ons nie. Skinder is n universele verskynsel. Moet net nie probeer om dit beter as meisies te doen nie! Diskresie en oordeel is beter as om iets aan almal te verkondig. In the movie Mary Poppins there is a song about votes for women: "Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid". Now that's a generalisation and generalisations are not always true. So while we may talk about Paul Roos as one body of men and Bloemhof as one group of ladies, we are all individuals with unique personalities, less likeable, more likeable, and adorable traits. While we'd like to wow each other, either with a dream look, witty remarks or a sixpack, a lasting attraction is being real, yourself, authentic. Sometimes we discover that the wisecracks, cool sayings and pickup lines you use come from social media and You- Tube videos. (Buffelsfonteinbaardolie ring a bell?). Homegrown and original is better, guys. We understand that gymming is big, like, major. But guys, too often it s used as an excuse or a place you have to be. Also, go easy on the personal trainer stuff with us girls. There's a limit on how close you can make us look like your Instagram babes, AKA Alexis Ren. None of us, or at least very few, remain the same from Grade 8 to matric. We grow, we "chill", we become different. Looking back at the start of high school, you think of things that you wanted to fight or cry about, that you can now talk about and even laugh about. We have a special bond. We've been neighbours for decades. We've dated for ages. We've shared fun for a long time. Bloemroos together, at social or sports meetings, is greater than the sum of its separate parts on the field, the court, the track and especially on the stands. And lastly, there is no truth in the rumour that we are looking for another brother school.

You see how people turned out, whether they realised their hopes and dreams or if they ve lost their hopes and dreams. Or maybe you see that they ve found what all should find brand new hopes and dreams. Brand new hopes and dreams are not always what one hopes for. It is most likely a result of discourage due to failure that leads you to change your hopes and dreams. Once things start going wrong, it s hard to break the cycle. Murphy s law is not physics. It s just a thing a guy said to try and make sense of a crappy day. Just because things go wrong, doesn t mean they re out of control. It s on us to fix things. It s on us to take everything that can go wrong and make it go right. It s on us to try anyway. Things will not always go as you want them to this you must have heard at least hundred times in your life so far. People will disappoint you. But it is on us to stay calm, focused and rational. We cannot put our fate in someone or something who can disappoints us hands. Yes, reunions are full of superficial conversations with a bunch of people you barely remember. And yes, it is hard to break the cycle and say goodbye to Murphy s law. Life will not always be pleasant or as we wished it to be. 13 Mei 2017 Student Council Ball 2017 Thomas Butler Semper 13 Student Council Leerlingraad PRG making (and taking) waves Thomas Butler Paul Roos is a school based on tradition. Although boys, or rather young men, are often criticised by others, especially the women in our lives, about not caring too much about thing such as balls (no, not the ones you play sports with), dances, dressing up or posing for photos (see Brief uit Bloemhof, page 11), one growing tradition within the school is the annual Student Council Ball, which is hosted by Paul Roos. The Ball provides an opportunity for young leaders from across the Western Cape to get Photo: JD West to know each other, mingle and share ideas while also enjtoying the evening in a beautiful setting, with good food, music and dancing. This year Student Council members from over twenty schools in the province attended the Ball, accompanied by their dates. The head count on the night was 690. Our men were true ambassadors for the school. As befitting good hosts, they made the leaders from every school from Boy s High to President feel welcome and made sure it was a good night for all at the same time looking quite snazzy in their mostly rented suits. PAUL ROOS Over the last couple of years, the popularity of surfing within Paul Roos has grown. However, due to several logistical and administrative challenges it has not been possible up to now to make it an official sport within the school. We have competed in surfing against Grey PE in the past, but this has been somewhat informal and also not too consistent. The Student Council of 2017 has identified this issue as well as the need for more interhouse competitions between learners within the school, Stephan Steinman and Marcel van der Merwe, together with Ms Stofberg, decided to organize an event to fix this problem. The first Paul Roos interhouse surfing competition took place in February at the Caves, Kogel Bay, where more than thirty learners competed in either the surfing or bodyboarding category. Shark spotters as well as various medically trained personnel, including a few See-en-Sand learners, were on the scene in case of any emergency. Bacon and egg rolls were prepared to keep the energy levels high. The judges for the event were old boy surfing enthusiasts Marc van der Merwe, Bethel Muller and Jac Berg, who took their duties seriously. A special Johan Schoeman The first term of 2017 hit Paul Roos like a well-placed right hook on the left temple. It dropped us in the ring and threw everything it had at us in a flurry of shots: sport, tests, projects and even an outbreak of measles. We had to duck, dive and side-step our way through the melee just to stay on our feet. Now, after more than 12 weeks of school, we re hanging on the ropes and fighting for air, and the end of Round One is finally in sight. What a fantastic round it has been! All things considered, the first term of the 2017 school year has been a massive success from a Paul Roos perspective and the Student Council has thoroughly enjoyed leading the school to new heights. The year got off to a good start as the Student Council welcomed a new group of Paul Roosers and showed them the ropes. The Class of 2021 has well and truly become a part of the Maroon Machine and, if rumours are to be believed, they are loving every minute of their time here. The Student Council s Mentor Committee, led by Keenan Ribeiro, played a big part in helping the Grade 8s make the transition from their respective primary schools. Every single Grade 8 has an assigned Matric Leerlingraadskolom Alive and Kicking thanks should be conveyed to Red Bull and Natural Energy for sponsoring this first event of its kind and it was hugely successful, with only positive feedback from all involved. We hope that in the years to come surfing will continue to grow in popularity. It might even inspire other schools to follow in our footsteps, leading to interschools competitions, which is key for any sport s growth. mentor who acts as an older brother, offering support and guidance in this strange new environment. The Committee also organised a braai where mentors and mentees had the opportunity to get to know each other better. The Interhouse Committee masterminded a very successful Interhouse Surfing Contest at Caves (see article above) in Kogel Bay that could stand its ground against any Pro Tour event. The contest was very well attended and every surfer was treated to good waves, fun in the sun, and a bacon and egg roll. By far the biggest event held this term was the annual Student Council Ball (see article above), organised and orchestrated by none other than our boys in the stripes. The Functions Committee started planning the dance at the end of last year and all their hard work culminated in a memorable evening. The ball was attended by almost 700 prefects from across the Western Cape and the students enjoyed good music, beautiful decor and delicious lamb shanks. After a hundred days in the ring the collective Paul Roos was more than ready for the April Holidays. And now, despite a bloody nose or two, we are alive and kicking and ready for Round Two.

Op 1 April vlieg die eerste span na Potchefstroom vir die jaarlikse Founders Hockey Festival. Paul Roos speel hier teen onder andere Affies, Potchefstroom en Glenwood. Hulle het vyf wedstryde gewen, terwyl hulle slegs een nederlaag gely het. Die toernooi word elke jaar by n ander skool in Suid-Afrika aangebied en is verlede jaar deur Paul Roos op Stellenbosch gehuisves. Foto: Verskaf Dexter Labuschagne Neil Meyeridricks (Graad 8) en Joubert Grobbelaar (Graad 10) het behoorlik geskitter by die SA Nasionale Kleiteikenkampioenskap wat van 27 tot 30 April 2017 by Valley Gun Club buite Durbanville gehou is. Neil, wat aan sy eerste nasionale kampioenskap deelgeneem het, het ouer en gesoute deelnemers van regoor Suid-Afrika, Zimbabwe en Namibië op hulle neuse laat kyk deur goud in die ATA-Trap vir juniors (skuts onder 18 jaar) te wen. Sy tellings van 93/100 en 91/100 was nie net die beste onder die junior deelnemers nie, maar ook goed genoeg vir n algehele 10de posisie onder al 62 senior en junior deelnemers! Joubert het aan sy derde nasionale kampioenskap deelgeneem en twee goue medaljes gewen. Joubert was ook lid van n junior span wat teen n besoekende junior span van Zimbabwe kragte gemeet het. Die Suid-Afrikaanse juniors het die goue medalje en Junior Challenge-beker maklik gewen, met Joubert wat die hoogste telling (91/100) onder al die deelnemende juniors in die uitdagende Trench-dissipline geskiet het. Na afloop van die kampioenskappe, het beide Neil en Joubert vir die SA Macintosh-span as lede van die top vier juniors in die DTL-dissipline gekwalifiseer. In Junie neem Joubert deel aan die Nasionale Olimpiese Kampioenskap wat buite Johannesburg gehou sal word.

15 Mei 2017 Janco Bruwer Breyton Poole has just been selected for the SA Youth World Championships Team that will be taking part in the IAAF World U/18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya between July this year. All the talk of his talent on social media has made his opponents very wary of him, so Jack Cloete Underwater hockey is a relatively new sport, quickly growing in popularity. An adjective which could possibly better describe this sport, played at the bottom of most pools in your area, is peculiar. Due to it being played underwater, this sport is certainly not a spectator sport, which often leads to a lack of interest in the sport among both participants and spectators. Nonetheless, for the past couple of years a handful of Paul Roosers annually excel in this unique sport. Breyton broke the SA schools record with a height of 2.15m. This jump and height already placed him as the number one in South Africa, but it was not enough for him. He was aiming higher, and has managed to jump a height of 2.18m, which earned him the world record and ultimately SA colours. Photo: JD West Lifesaver Mark Jack Cloete Mark Kleinhans (Grade 10) participated in the Lifesaving South Africa Stillwater Nationals 2017 which took place in Durban from 27 to 30 April 2017, where he won 5 gold medals, 3 silver and 3 bronze Paul Roos dives to new depths first of its kind an interschool s underwater hockey tournament. Wienand van der Walt, Kabe Gordon, Daniël Maree, Muller Fischer, Max Lourens, George Fischer and Luca Kirsten represented PRG in the U16 league. They played excellent hockey, especially considering this was their first competitive tournament. David Knobel, Van Zyl Bester and Thomas Butler won the U19 league with a convincing 5-1 win over Wellington. Thomas scored 4 goals with Van Zyl scoring the final, and assisting in most. This year the Boland U19 underwater hockey team who represented the region at the Junior National Tournament was captained by a Paul Rooser, Thomas Butler. Van Zyl Bester and David Knobel also played in the Boland team. Eleven men s teams entered in both the A and B National league at the tournament which took place in Durban in March. After a gruelling and exhausting tournament, Boland ended third overall out of all the men s teams who entered. One area in which the sport is growing extremely fast is the younger leagues. Max Lourens and Luca Kirsten represented the U15 Boland team, who ended fourth in the National league. Several other Paul Roos- ers also recently started joined the sport, some so recently that they weren t able to represent the province in Durban this year. At the final function of the Junior National Tournament several individual awards were also presented. Thomas Butler received the Engelbrecht-trophy for the individual junior player who showcased the best skills at the tournament. Boland, as a region, also won the Gees-trophy, a true testament to show just how much team spirit we have in Andre Liebenberg Rufus Dercksen (Graad 11) het onlangs Springbokkleure in ruiterkuns ontvang toe hy gekies is om Suid-Afrika te gaan verteenwoordig by n internasionale Ruiterkunskampioenskkap in Georgia, VSA. The Boland U19 team finished third in the fin swimming competition, with Van Zyl Bester swimming the penultimate leg of the relay. Angling refers to fishing with a rod and line. Deep-sea angling is practised from a boat, anywhere from the harbour to forty nautical miles off-land. There are also other types of angling, for example rock and surf angling. Competitive angling is an expensive sport. Tackle, which includes rods, reels, line, hooks, sinkers, and so forth, come at a cost. A boat is obviously nice to have, but petrol is one of the major expenses in deep sea fishing. Angling teaches patience and perseverance, so the effort and the costs are worth your while. Brad s passion for angling began when he was still a youngster, and his competitive career began in 2011 when he was twelve years old. One of his best friends at the time was in the Western Province team for deep-sea angling, and he encouraged Brad to start competing. In 2011, Brad was chosen as part of the Western Province Deep Sea Angling Association (WPSDAA) U/16 team at the national tournament. In 2014 Brad was included in the Western Province U/19 team. He was nominated as the captain of that team in When asked what he enjoys most about angling, Brad said that he enjoyed the freedom of being away from land as well as its societal problems and pressures. Victory or Defeat? over the last few years. We have suffered numerous last-minute defeats to strong opponents. In 2014 it was also at the hands of Grey PE saw Grey College snatch a victory in the dying seconds of the game. And in 2017 it happened against Paarl Gym and, as we now know, once again against Grey PE. There are those within Paul Roos who feel that rugby is too important; that we should put less focus on it and not make such a big fuss about losing. However, one cannot deny that on a Saturday, whether we play at Markötter or elsewhere, we have support among the masses. In the eyes of Photo: Ben Barnard a large number of Paul Roosers rugby is a priority and whether Christian Render Grey PE 2017 has come and gone in a flash and, as usual, with ups as well as downs. Arguably the biggest disappointment was the defeat which our first rugby team suffered. Many feel, regardless of all the other results, that when the first XV loses, the weekend as a whole is a loss. But let us consider the facts. In all competitions, ranging from debating to golf, Paul Roos won 63 of the encounters, Grey won 15 and 2 ended in draws. Tennis and golf were the first victories of the weekend, followed by senior debating and chess. Our tennis teams were completely dominant, with scores ending 26-1 in our favour. Fifteen hockey matches were played, with PRG winning 8 and losing 7. Altogether, Paul Roos, however, scored a thumping 29 goals while Grey managed only 16. And although the first hockey team lost, they went down 0-1 in a tightly contested affair. Their efforts were valiant and they could leave the astro heads held high. As for the rugby, 21 matches were played. We won 18 and lost only 3 games. PRG put 788 points on the board from U/14 up to U/19, whereas Grey had only managed a measly 184. Three of our four A-sides won and the U/16 and U/15 age groups were unbeaten as a whole. As one can see, the results speak for themselves. Paul Roos had a dominant weekend up in PE and we can be proud. The fact that the first team rugby had suffered yet another last-minute defeat should therefore not be regarded as a soul-crushing experience. But it does seem that it has become a PRG trademark we support or play, we hate losing and especially hate it if the first team does. So the school s mood is grim after a loss against Gim or Grey. But it is not only rugby that has tasted success and it is not only rugby we want to taste success in. Mr Frans van Niekerk, Deputy Rector, recently said a very wise thing, namely that we are in serious trouble when our perspective on excellence depends solely on what fifteen 17-year-olds get up to on a rugby field.
