We started with the Chicago Musky Show in January. We had a great turnout at the show with lots of folks stopping by the booth to chat & purchase raffle tickets for the St. Croix rod and Shimano Tranx reel combo we were raffling off. Thanks to our friends at Cabela s for donating this unbelievable combo to use to raise money for the Chapter! In February we participated in the One Hope United Ice Outing on Deep Lake. We took 19 kids ice fishing who had never set foot on a frozen lake before! Thanks to all the guys who helped make this event a memorable one for all the OHU kids! March 2 nd was the date of our annual fundraising banquet at Chandlers. We had a great turnout, with great food, lots of prizes, & raised some BIG money for our club! Dan Koniewicz did another fantastic job as our MC, handling all of the award presentations, stories and photos of our members and their awesome catches! Many of our members were recognized for their angling prowess and I d like to congratulate all the women, men and children who brought home some nice hardware for their walls! Thanks to all of our vendors and sponsors who donated their goods and services to our club for this Fundraising event, we couldn t have done it without your support! April is the month we normally focus our efforts on holding the annual Spring Challunge on the Chain; which has now been moved into May in the hopes of better fishing and better catches! The18th Annual Spring Challunge on the Chain will take place on Saturday May 18 th, The awards and dinner will be held at the VFW in Antioch. For more information check out our website at Also in May, we will be hosting the 2 nd annual Breast Cancer Awareness Outing on the Fox Chain on Saturday May 11 th. Last years inaugural event was well attended with lots of husbands, wives and daughters fishing together to help raise money for breast cancer. A morning of musky fishing was followed by a BBQ and awards. The monies we raised for this event were donated back to the local breast cancer chapter here in our area. All of the information for this event will be posted on the FRV website as well as in our monthly newsletter. Grab your wife and daughter and have them come out & fish this great outing! June 8 th is the Jake Wolfe Musky Tournament on the Fox Chain followed by our Youth Musky Hunt on Moose Lake in Hayward, WI on June 13 th -16 th. We are hosting this event in conjunction with the YCA, so you know this will be a well run event! If you have children or know some children who would like to participate in this event, please fill out an application, as the club picks up the tab for the kids food, lodging and fishing guides! July 13 th -20 th we will host our annual summer Musky Shootout on LOTW at the Angle Outpost Resort. This trip is nearly 100% full so if you re looking to go, see Phil Gutmann ASAP to see what cabins may still be available. July 6 th -10 th we will have a club outing to Lake St Claire in Michigan. This lake has been producing huge numbers and huge fish and is a musky factory. If you ve never been to St. Claire, this is a great trip to go on. Grab your boat and a partner and join us for a great time on St. Claire. August 3 rd is the date of the Annual Bartlett Kids Fishing Derby on Beaver Pond in Bartlett. We work with Dan Mitchell & his Bartlett Park District crew to put on a great kids fishing event for up to 500 kids! As you can see, there is a lot going on in the 1 st half of 2013 for the FRV Chapter including our monthly meetings on the 2 nd Wednesday of every month! We have tons of events and activities for all of our members to get involved with whether it s participating in a musky tournament, a fishing event or a youth outing. You can fish or volunteer to help with one of our events. You know assisting with a kid s event, youth outing or fishing event can be very rewarding. The work you put forth is all worth it when you see the gratitude on the faces of the folks participating in the event! It s a great feeling to pay it forward and it s almost as addicting as musky fishing itself. Our board members work tirelessly throughout the year to help out at these events. We have so much going on throughout the calendar year, we are spread very thin. We are always looking for club members to jump in and help out. This is the best way to get involved with your club and meet and make new friends. If you re new to our chapter or are a long standing member who hasn t been involved with the club for a while; jump in! We d love to have you volunteer to help out at some of these club functions! Just like life, you get out of it what you put into it! As the 2013 open water season begins, make a commitment to do 2 things this year; take a kid fishing (other than your own) and share a boat with someone new in our club that you ve never fished with before! The memories you create will make you smile all year long!! Membership - Pictures 9 Until next month.ladies & gentlemen..start your engines!!! Rich Gallagher

Cost is $13.00/Adults, $8.00/Child - does not include beverage.. Recap of FRV Feb 13 Meeting with Gregg Thomas. Gregg s Feb Presentation covered Musky Jigging & Sucker Fishing. We have hosted several speakers at FRV, to cover sucker fishing techniques. Gregg s gave us the 1st formal presentation to feature Jigging for Muskies. Jigging is a technique to try, when muskies are expected to be a little lower in the water column... Some of Gregg s Musky Jigging Tips: - Use a long 9 foot medium action rod, & fast retrieve reel w/ heavy drag. It is hard to detect subtle strikes - med rod will help to not lose hook sets. Fast retrieve reel will help set hook, & not to lose fish swimming upward. - To hook more fish, install a treble hook on top of a Bondy Bait, using split ring from the Lure Tie. - Use the rod to jig 3 foot vertical sweeps with the lure - do not go higher than the 9 o clock position with the rod, to allow for hook set. - Move the boat slowly while jigging to cover more area. Jig near timber, as well as open water. - Watch for big fish hooks on sonar. 3 P A G E 3 M A R C H IMA Recap - by Pete Barber. The Illini Musky Alliance held its annual meeting with the Division of Fisheries, IL Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) at the Chicago Muskie Show on Saturday, January 12 th. Debbie Bruce, Chief of Fisheries, Jim Mick and Steve Krueger, manager of the Jake Wolf Hatchery represented the DNR. Matt Diana, the biologist from the IL Natural History Survey (NHS) responsible for Project Green Genes was also present. IMA presented a special achievement award to recently retired Chief of Fisheries, Steve Pallo in recognition of his 18 years dedicated service to IL fishermen. Steve is an avid musky angler and has long served as advisor to Muskies, Inc., Research Editor for Musky Hunter magazine, and has authored numerous scientific articles in a variety of related publications. Illinois fishermen, in general, and especially muskie fishermen are deeply indebted to Steve. Debbie Bruce reported the Fisheries budget for fiscal 2013 has been reduced another 10% and limited to 74 people. The legislature did pass the sustainability act specifying $1.5 million annually for DNR over the next 10 years. If past legislative action is any indicator, it can change this any time it wants. During 2012, FRV and the other IMA members provided funding for conductivity meters, PC testers and a water pump. Currently, there is a $400,000 back log of needed equipment and commodities within Fisheries. Possible ways for the IMA clubs and their members to help DNR were discussed. DNR will present a list of its pressing 2013 needs at the February IMA meeting. DNR presented a 10 year report showing the annual results of muskie rearing at the hatchery. In 2012, 14 female muskies were spawned resulting in 24,056 fingerlings put into the rearing ponds in spring and 23, fish stocked in IL lakes in the fall. This is an unprecedented 96% survival rate. A report showing the number of fish stocked in the individual lakes had been previously released. This report also shows that from 2003 through 2006 (Fish 6 and more years old that should now average 40 and above. See Project Green Genes below.) the production of fish averaged 12,200. This number jumps to over 20,000 in years after This hopefully means we will be catching substantially greater numbers of 40 + fish from IL waters in coming years. Data from the 2012 creel survey shows that in IL, it takes an average of 10 hours to catch a muskie. The national average is 100 hours. 90% of the biggest muskies reported caught by any fisherman are released. The longest fish caught in 2012 was 50.5 from Lake Kincaid. The survey is now on line; but, not yet available to the public. However, the DNR site is available to the public and offers a great deal of information valuable to fishermen... PROJECT GREEN GENES: Matt Diana (NHS) reported the final findings of Project Green Genes. IL and OH strain fish are equally the best suited for IL lakes. The Leech Lake (Upper Mississippi) strain does very poorly in IL waters. This held for all portions of the state. The stocking period for the 3 test lakes in northern, central and southern IL was 2003 thru Some 100 of each strain were stocked in each of the 5 years. By 2012, 7 year old OH and IL strain females averaged throughout the state. Leech Lake strain fish were difficult to find from the year after each stocking. This indicates a very poor survival rate. After 7 years, those fish that were found were significantly smaller than IL and OH strain fish. A complete report is being prepared and will be published. The DNR will continue to monitor these lakes. Matt thanked the IMA. clubs, Muskies, Inc. and various out of state MI clubs that provided special funding at critical times during the 10 year project. [Should FRV continue to stock Leech Lake fish in the Fox Chain? Does WI DNR have any thoughts about this finding when stocking Leech Lake strain in Delevan and Geneva?] MUSKIES DIET AND EFFECT ON OTHER GAME FISH SPECIES: During the period , studies were conducted in 7 IL lakes to determine the diets of stocked muskies. In Lake Shelbyville, their diet consists of over 90% gizzard shad. Few to no other game fish were found in muskies stomachs. There were no seasonal differences in the diets. Ridge Lake doesn t hold any shad. Nearly 100% of muskies diets were blue gills. A comparative study in 16 lakes was conducted to test the effect of introducing muskie as the top predator and how their presence might affect other game fish species. Muskies were stocked in 8 lakes; the other 8 biologically similar lakes used as a control. The bottom line results showed that introducing muskies did NOT have a negative effect on any other game fish in any of stocked lakes (Continued =======>>)
4 P AG E 4 MA RCH 2013 IMA Recap - by Pete Barber (Cont.). DAM ESCAPEMENT This study began in the spring, Early results showed that some 90% of muskies going over dams do so in daylight hours. This appears to be true regardless of the clarity of the water. In one lake, Sam Dale, 20 % of the adult muskie population was lost over the dam in one spring. These fish were all 40 and greater in length. Juvenile and smaller adults were not escaping. These 2 facts strongly support the continuing need for fish booms atop dams, where possible, and repeated, recapture projects below unprotected dams. At a 20% annual rate, after 5 years only one-third of the large, adult fish from the original population will remain. Even as smaller fish reach 40 over the years and additional stocking occurs, the number of large fish will continue to decline until there are too few, large muskie for a sustainable, fishable population. Due to the continuing drought beginning in the summer of 2011, too little overflow has been present to cause measurable escapement. However, monitoring devices remain in place and have been maintained. The study continues... Respectfully Submitted, I M A Reps NO. (347) SALES@ 3DPICTURESTORE.COM PO BOX 8066 BARTLETT, IL.
