It s been a relatively mild few months. Let s hope it stays that way and we have a somewhat normal spring. With April a month away, its time to start thinking about the southern lakes and reservoirs. In 20 some years the earliest I ve been fishing has been mid-may. I just booked my first ever trip in mid-april down to Cave Run. I ll let you know how I do. If you want to jump start your season, here are some suggestions: On March 12, 2016 the Capital City Muskies will be holding their 15 th Annual Intermediate and Advanced Muskie School at Waunakee High School in Waunakee, Wisconsin from 7:30 to 4:00. Waunakee is located on the north edge of Madison. For $45.00 you can choose from 30 available course offerings including rod and reel repair. The price includes donuts and coffee and a catered lunch. There will be raffle prizes and discounted fishing tackle for sale. For additional information contact Steve Reistra@mpd339r@charter.net or visit their website. From March 12 through 15 th, Muskies, Inc. will be holding its 50 th Anniversary Banquet and Muskie Symposium in Minneapolis. The banquet will be on Saturday the 12 th with the symposium to follow the remaining days. If you want to learn the science, challenges and environmental issues facing the fisheries, this is the place to be. You can get details on the Muskies, Inc. website. Our regular club meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9th. Our guest speaker will be Billy Davis, from Melton Hill Reservoir near Knoxville, Tennessee, Billy will be speaking about southern Reservoir muskies. The meeting starts at 7:00PM and are usually over by 9:30 at Chandler s Chop House in Schaumburg. A buffet dinner is served starting at 6:00PM. Cost is $16.00/person and a cash bar is also available. Finally, our Annual Awards Banquet and Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, March 19 th at Chandler s Chop House in Schaumburg. We have approximately $28,000 in prizes to give away to the lucky winners including Blackhawks, Cubs and Bulls tickets, tickets to see Billy Joel and James Taylor in Wrigley Field. We have autographed jerseys and other sports memorabilia, jewelry, a freezer of meat, Weber Big Green Egg Grill and much, much more! For the sportsman we have a $1,200 ice fishing package, rods, reels baits, guide trips and resort stays. Spa and getaways will also be available as well as household items and liquor. Prizes will be awarded through bucket and silent auctions and there will be a few live auctions and games. Details and order forms are in the newsletter. Ticket packages are $40, $50 and $100 which include family style dinner and bucket raffle tickets depending on the package. A special thanks goes out to Dan Koniewicz who stepped up as our emergency speaker in February. He gave an excellent presentation on Lake of the Woods and showed everybody a few spots, baits and techniques to use on that terrific body of water. Hope to see you at the Banquet! Steve Kroll

Come to our March meeting featuring Billy Davis who will be talking Melton Hill Muskies! Enjoy a great Chandler's dinner and win some big prizes. Hope to see you there! IMA Report The annual, joint IL Dept. of Natural Resources, Illini Musky Alliance meeting was held at Cabela's January 10th in conjunction with the Chicago Muskie Expo. The IMA is the alliance of Illinois muskie clubs promoting muskie fishing throughout the State and working to help the IDNR improve and enhance the muskie program. Dan Stevenson, Acting Chief of Fisheries and Mike McClelland came from Springfield to update us on the current situation of the Division of Fisheries and the 2015 results of the muskie program. With the current state of Illinois's fiscal affairs, Fisheries' position is bleak and the future is dismal. The former staff of some 140 persons has been reduced to 72 state-wide. Vacant positions cannot be filled. Retirees are not replaced. Fully 2/3 of the Division's staff is over 50; 1/3 is over 62. According to Dan, it takes 10 years for a new biologist to become fully trained and experienced in his or her area of expertise. There can be no new hires and probably won't be for the next few years. An occasional transfer from other areas does occur. As people retire, their work load is reassigned to the remaining biologists. Each then has more lakes or streams, more conditions and more problems to handle. Until the State resolves its dire problems, this situation is likely to continue. Subsequent to the meeting, IDNR sent its 2016 list of equipment needed by Fisheries. After seeing the list and talking with Acting Chief Stevenson, it seems their needs are reduced because there are significantly fewer DNR professionals needing equipment to do their jobs. For 2016, the Division has given the highest priority to obtaining a second fish hauling trailer for northern IL. Two years ago, FRV donated funds through the IMA to acquire the first trailer. Basically, a specialty trailer is built on which is mounted a 400 gal. tank. It is used to transport fish from the hatchery to local lakes. A tank is available. The cost to build the trailer is some $4,000. Additionally, Fisheries needs some 1,500 PIT tags and 2 new readers. The tags are implanted in captured fish to track their movements. The cost of the tags and readers is $4, new trap nets have also been requested. The nets' cost has not yet been provided. Respectfully Submitted, FRV Delegates

CHAPTER 42 Media Contacts: Jeremy Sivis Hoosier Muskie Hunters muskieclassic@yahoo.com John Mazurkiewicz Catalyst Marketing jpmazurk@ameritech.net Tournament Headquarters Oakwood Resort in Syracuse, Indiana HOOSIER MUSKIE HUNTERS SET TO HOST 20 th ANNUAL TOURNAMENT - INDIANA MUSKIE CLASSIC KICKS OFF MAY 13 WEEKEND Approximately 180 anglers will converge on the famed muskie waters of northern Indiana May 13-15, 2016, for the 20 th Annual Indiana Muskies Classic, presented by the Hoosier Muskie Hunters. The tournament attracts anglers from as far as West Virginia and noted muskie-fishing hotspots like Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as Indiana. The weekend event is the unofficial kick-off to the muskie fishing season since many states have closed seasons or their lakes are still ice covered. Tournament organizers have used the event over the past 20 years to help put Indiana on the map as a great muskie fishing destination. Working closely with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Indianapolis-area based Hoosier Muskies Hunters club uses tournament proceeds to enhance the state s muskie population. The club has raised more than $85,000 to stock nearly 12,000 fish in state waters and also purchased critical equipment for the Indiana DNR. Indiana Muskie Classic co-director Jeremy Sivis notes that in 2015, our club was able to purchase $6,500 worth of minnows to feed muskies being raised in the Fawn River State Fish Hatchery this winter. It will allow them to grow larger before being released, in hopes that we see better survival rates. Although the club focus is on muskies, the group has donated $2,000 for bass restocking efforts when a fish kill devastated the smallmouth bass population in central Indiana s White River. The 2016 Indiana Muskie Classic is limited to 90 two-person teams, with anglers fishing different waters each day. They will rotate between Lake Tippecanoe, Lake Webster and the Barbee Chain, all located within 10 miles of tournament headquarters. Tournament registration will open in early January visit indianamuskieclassic.com for more information. Special room rates for tournament anglers are available at the Oakwood Resort in Syracuse, Ind. by calling be sure to mention Hoosier Muskie Hunters special rate.

6 P A G E 6 FRV MUSKIES INC. THE FOX RIVER VALLEY CHAPTER PROUDLY PRESENTS BILLY DAVIS WENDNESDAY MARCH 9 TH, 2016 SCHAUMBURG GOLF CLUB On March 9th, Billy Davis will be talking about Melton Hill Muskies and Stripers. Billy Davis is a USCG Licensed Captain, and has taken great pride in fishing these waters over the past two decades. I ll let him sum it up. I want to let others get out and share in some of the adventures I take. I was born and raised in Knoxville, went to Karns High School and I am graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's of science degree in geology. I grew up fishing these waters and realize how special of a place it is. I fish all over eastern Tennessee, but my true love is chasing muskies and trophy striped bass on Melton Hill reservoir outside of Knoxville, TN. In a addition to fishing on Melton Hill, I also chase trophy stripers all around eastern Tennessee and have patterned out trophy fish in many locations. If you want to fish with someone that knows the ins and outs of trophy fish, look no further than meltonhillbill.com. I eat, drink, and sleep, fishing. I fish hard, fast, and efficiently. Please know that all fish I target are caught and released, except for the occasional walleye. Being a geologist / fishermen, I have an in depth understanding about the earth's cyclical patterns and I have a unique understand of the river systems in Tennessee. Each river system is unique based on the environmental factors. I am never satisfied with just finding fish. I strive to learn exactly why a fish is at a certain location at a certain time of the day. The TVA river system is complex and it takes someone that understands these patterns to effectively keep their clients on fish. I will help to teach you why certain stretches of waters are more effective than others. I will put forth the effort to ensure your trip is informational and enjoyable as possible. I have clients in from all over the country. When we are out on the water, all you get is hard nosed fishing mixed with fun and a little education. Fishing for apex predators isn't just a past time or hobby, it really is a science, a passion, and my way of life. All we take home are pictures so why not take the best possible pictures. I will bring along semi professional camera gear in order to capture the moments. My Nikon DSLRs will get every detail and the pictures I will take of your catch can be printed to a life size scale.

10 P A G E 10 DADSON BLADE BAIT RAFFLE Back in 2013 we started to see a buzz in the Muskie world about a new, double-bladed muskie bait to hit the market. Fishermen were raving about a Double 10 bait that was almost indestructible, had increased castability, and could be trolled. Followers quickly began lining up, using and swearing by this new bait, as demand went through the roof. It was not unusual for tackle shops to be sold out, and then to see the lures being sold on ebay, Facebook and Muskie First at 2-3 times their original retail value. The baits I m referring to are DADSON BLADE BAITS. The Fox River Valley Muskies Inc. club has partnered with Owner Johnny Dadson and has secured a limited quantity of custom Muskie Bullets in 2016 Chicago show color configurations. From the Dadson Website: The Musky Bullet was designed by Mike Hulbert and Johnny Dadson. They wanted a Super Heavy blade bait that could cast well in any wind and could be burned at Mach 10. The Musky Bullet has Double #10 Colorado blades, built on heavy.62 wire and weighs 4 oz. The Musky Bullet has been a phenomenal lure for trolling for late fall Muskies. Using an in-line weight to target the 15'-25' depth range has produced some absolutely GIANT Muskies. The Musky Bullet produced more than 120 Muskies over 50 inches in its very first year TEN of these baits will be made available at our club s monthly raffle in March. Please plan to attend the 9 th meeting Fox River Valley March for a chance to win one of these unique, coveted items. They are sure to take your fishing game to the next level in the New Year.
