INTRODUCTION The Yukon Rive dainage suppots majo uns of chinook salmon (Oncohynchus tshawytscha Walbaum), summe and fall chum salmon (. keta Walbaum), and coho salmon (O. kisutch Walbaum). These species contibute to commecial and subsistence fisheies thoughout the Yukon Rive dainage. Pink salmon (. gobuscha Walbaum) and sockeye salmon (O. neka Walbaum) ae also indi-genous to the Yukon Rive dainage. Pink salmon etuns ae stonge in even-numbeed yeas, while sockeye salmon ae only aely documented, and neithe species is havested by commecial o subsistence fishemen to any extent. Summe chum salmon ae distinguished fom fall chum salmon by thei ealie enty timing into the Yukon Rive (ealy June to mid-july), smalle size, lowe oil content, and spawning distibution in the lowe and middle potion of the Yukon Rive dainage. Fall chum salmon ente the Yukon Rive fom mid-july to ealy Septembe, and spawn in the uppe potion of the dainage. _-1 The Yukon Aea includes all wates of the Yukon Rive and its tibutay steams in Alaska (Figue 1) and the Yukon Teitoy, Canada (Figue 2), and all coastal wates fom Canal Point light nea Cape Stephens southwad to the Naskonat Peninsula. The Alaska potion of the ive is divided into six fishing disticts as follows: Disticts 1, 2, and 3 in the owe Yukon Aea; and Disticts 4, 5, and 6 in the Uppe Yukon Aea. Commecial fishing occus thoughout the mainstem Yukon Rive and in the lowe 36 km (225 mi) of the Tanana Rive. Most of the commecial havest is taken in Disticts 1 and 2. Set and dift gill nets ae the legal gea in the lowe Yukon, and set gill nets and fish wheels in the uppe Yukon. Chinook and fall chum salmon ae also commecially havested in a pedominantly gill net fishey nea Dawson City, Yukon Teitoy, whee some fish whee 1 s ae a 1 so used. Subsistence fishing is allowed thoughout the dainage with most of the effot concentated in the ma i nstem Yukon Rive. The Yukon Aea Annual Management Repot. (ADF&G 1987) povides a complete desciption of the Yukon Aea and its fisheies. Most commecial fishing occus in the lowe 23 km (2 mi) of the ive, whee the havest consists of mixed species and stocks of salmon bound fo spawning aeas thoughout the Yukon Rive dainage. Resouce management agencies, pimaily the Alaska Depatment of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the Depatment of Fisheies and Oceans, Canada (DFO), conduct a vaiety of pogams that supply infomation used to manage and document the fisheies. These pogams include: (1) documentation of catch in each fishey; (2) catch sampling fo age, sex; and size data; (3) assessing the magnitude of spawning escapements by aei a 1 and gound suveys, hydoacoust i c countes, towes, weis, and visually though a fishpass; and (4) sampling majo spawning escapements fo age, sex, and size data. Total un estimates ae obtained by ADF&G using hydoacoust i c countes in the ma i nstem Yukon Rive nea Pilot Station, and by DFO using tag and ecaptue methods at the US/Canada bode. Between 1969 and 1981 Yukon Rive salmon age, sex, and size sample data summaies wee annually epoted in the ADF&G Actic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Region Age, Sex, and Size Composition of Salmon Repot Seies. Since 1982 the composition of Yukon Rive salmon catches and escapements by age, sex, and -1~

size have been epoted by McBide, Hamne, and Buklis (1983), and by Buklis and Wilcock (1984, 1985, and 1986). This epot pesents Yukon Rive salmon commecial havests, subsistence havests, and enumeated spawning escapements in numbes of fish by age and sex fo Indices of elative abundance and age and sex summaies ae pesented fo othe majo spawning escapements. ength is epoted by age and sex fo each sampled fishey and escapement. No attempt has been made in this epot to identify the oigin of fish in mixed stock fisheies o to estimate the conti.bution of any spawning stock to a fishey. The data pesented hee constitute the fund amen ta l biological infomation necessay to egulate Yukon Rive salmon fishey havests and monito the status of the spawning stocks. ' "' ( ('~ ' METHODS Abundance of Catch and Escapement Alaskan commecial catch data pesented in this epot wee compiled by the Division of Commecial Fisheies fo each management distict and wee based on compute tabulations of individual havest eceipts (fish tickets). Subsistence catch data wee tabulated fom pesonal inteviews of subsistence fishemen in selected villages and fom mail-in questionnaies. The Distict 4 summe chum salmon commecial catch included an estimate of unused males that wee a by-poduct of the commecial summe chum salmon oe fishey in this distict. Methods of estimation ae discussed in the 1986 Yukon Aea Annual Management Repot (ADF&G 1987). Gea types used to havest salmon in the subsistence fishey wee not accuately documented fo the Uppe Yukon Aea, whee both gill nets and fish wheels ae used. Subsistence catches by gea type wee subjective estimates (F.M. Andesen, ADF&G, Faibanks, pesonal communication) due to lack of adequate gea suvey infomation. All Yukon Teitoy catch data wee obtained fom DFO. Canadian catch is epoted hee as entiely by gill net, although an unknown potion of the commecial and subsistence havest is taken by fish wheels. DFO does not povide havest data by gea type. Gill nets ae thought to account fo the majoity of both the chinook and chum salmon havest in the Yukon Teitoy. Most escapement data wee peak aeial suvey estimates fo selected spawning steams. An effot was made to suvey the majo spawning populations and these indices ae believed to epesent oveall tends in escapement. Additional escapement estimates wee obtained by othe methods as follows: 1. Summe chum, chinook, Andeafsky Rive was (Bukl is 1986). and pink salmon escapement to the East Fok enumeated by ADF&G using counting towes 2. Summe chum salmon escapement to the Anvik Rive (Buklis 1986) and fall chum salmon escapement to the Sheenjek Rive (Baton, in pess) was enumeated by ADF&G using side-scanning sona countes. :- c \..-:::' -2~

. ~c ',, ' --- ) Fall chum salmon escapement to the Chandala Rive was enumeated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Sevice (USFWS) using side-scanning sona countes (Simmons, in pess). Chinook salmon escapement to Clea Ceek was enumeated by ADF&G (Baton 1987b) using a wei, while DFO used weis to enumeate the chinook salmon escapement to the Big Salmon Rive and the fall chum salmon escapement to the Fishing Banch Rive. Chinook salmon passing the Whitehose Dam in Yukon Teitoy, Canada wee visually counted by DFO as they ascended a fishpass. Fall chum salmon escapement to the Toklat and Delta Rives was estimated by ADF&G fom gound suveys and steam esidency time expansion factos. 7. A hydoacoustic counting site was opeated by ADF&G on the mainstem Yukon Rive at mile 123 to obtain total salmon population estimates by species (Thompson, in pess). 8. A chi nook sa 1 mon tag and ecaptue study was conducted by ADF&G (Baton 1987a) in the Chena Rive to obtain a spawning escapement estimate, while a chinook and fall chum salmon tag and ecaptue study was conducted by DFO just upsteam fom the USiCanada bode to obtain population estimates fo the Canadian potion of the dainage, excluding the Pocupine Rive. Age. Sex. and ength Salmon wee sampled fo scales, sex, and length. The annuli on the scales povided age infomation fo salmon in the catch and escapement. Scales wee taken fom the left side of the fish appoximately two ows above the lateal line along the diagonal fom the posteio insetion of the dosal fin to the anteio insetion of the anal fin (INPFC 1963). Scales wee mounted on gum cads and pemanent impessions made in cellulose acetate (Clutte and Wh i tese ). Vetebae wee samp 1 ed fom fa 11 chum sa 1 mon escapement samples in the Alaska potion of the dainage as a n altenate souce of age infomation due to fequent es o pt ion of seal e magins fo those stocks. Ages ae epoted in Euopean notation. The fist digit of the Euopean fomula efes to the numbe of feshwate annuli pesent on seal es of the fish and epesents the numbe of yeas of feshwate esidence minus one (feshwate esidence pio to scale fomation). The second digit efes to the maine age of the fish. Total age is the sum of these two numbes plus one. Sex detemination was based on examination of eithe extenal mophological featues o gonads. An attempt was made to sample fish fom the commecial catch fo each gea type in each distict. Howeve, because of the logistics involved in sampling such a widely dispesed fishey, many of the smalle havests wee not sampled. The majoity of the commecial catch samples wee collected in Disticts 1 and 2. Subsistence catches wee geneally not sampled. Age and sex composition of subsistence havests fo a given distict and gea type wee based on commecial catch samples taken by that gea type in the same -3-

o, in some cases, a neighboing distict. An attempt was made to sample the majo chinook and chum salmon spawning populations. Most escapement data wee co 11 ected fom cacasses, although 1 i ve sa 1 mon wee samp 1 ed at the Cl ea Ceek wei and wee captued by beach seine at the East Fok Andeafsky, Anvik, and Sheenjek Rives. Age and sex composition was estimated fo each sampled fishey with a statified systematic sampling design (Cochan 1977). Stata wee defined as weekly peiods (geneally two fishing peiods pe week) fo Distict 1 and 2 chinook salmon, and also fo Distict 1 summe chum, fall chum, and coho salmon duing that potion of the season when the majoity of the havest was taken. Fo the othe disticts and fisheies, time stata wee of vaiable length depending on the numbe of samples collected. An attempt was made to sample a sufficient numbe of fish within a stata to simultaneously estimate the tue popotion of each majo age class in the catch within ± 5 pecentage points 9% of the time. Age compositions and associated vaiances wee estimated with pocedues outlined by Cochan (1977) fo statified sampling pogams: VCtjl = (CtJ 2 Ptj(Ptj-1) T VC.j] = ~VCtjl t=l Whee: Ct = Numbe of fish caught in statum t, Ptj = Faction of sample in statum t of age j, Nt =Numbe of samples duing statum t, "'t-1 Ctj = Estimated numbe of fish of age j duing statum t, T = Total numbe of stata, C.j =Estimated.numbe of fish of age j fo the season, T. If thee wee insufficient samples to attain the above levels of pec1s1on and accuacy, the samples wee pooled into a single sample peiod fo that fishey o escapement. Catch o escapement by age and sex was then estimated. Fo those escapement samples with only aeial suvey indices of abundance, sample data wee pesented, but indices of abundance wee not estimated by age and sex. -4- cf 1. ~- ( ' \ i. -~ f ~. I. '-. 16 engths wee measued. fom mid-obit to fok of tail to the neaest 5 millimetes. Some samples collected in Yukon Teitoy by DFO wee measued fom tip of snout to fok of tail, o fom post obit to hypual pl ate. These samples ae footnoted accodingly in the appopiate tables. Aveage length, by age and sex, was epoted fo each sampled fishey and escapement. ength samples wee not statified by sample peiod. RESUTS Commecial and Subsistence Havest Commecial havest (Alaska and Canada combined) totaled 11,767 chinook, 1,82,58 summe chum, 151,483 fall chum, and 47,255 coho salmon in 1986 (Table 1). The summe chum salmon commecial havest figue includes an estimated 89,348 unused males taken in the Distict 4 oe fishey. The chinook salmon havest was 3% below that of 1985, the summe chum salmon havest (excluding unused males) was 3% above, the fall chum salmon havest was 5% below, and the coho salmon havest was 18% below the 1985 level. The chinook, summe chum (excluding unused males), fall chum, and coho salmon commecial havests in the Alaska potion of the dainage in 1986 wee 28"/o below, 17% above, 53% below, and 11% above the ecent 5-yea ( ) aveage, espectively. Fishemen in the Alaska potion of the dainage eceived an estimated $6,249, fo thei catch in 1986, simila to the aveage. The lagest commecial havests of chinook, fall chum, and coho salmon occued in Distict 1, while Distict 4 accounted fo the lagest summe chum salmon havest. Gill nets accounted fo the majoity of the havest fo each species. Commecial havest and catch pe unit effot by species and fishing peiod is pesented fo each distict in Appendix Tables 1-7. Subsistence havest (Alaska and Canada combined) totaled 54,549 chinook, 29,888 summe chum, 167,16 fall chum, and 34,77 coho salmon in 1986 (Table 2). The chinook salmon havest was 18% above that of 1985, summe chum salmon 1% above, fall chum salmon 21% below, and the coho salmon havest 7% above the 1985 level. The chinook, summe chum, fall chum, and coho salmon subsistence havests in the Alaska potion of the dainage in 1986 wee 19% above, 21% above, 8% below, and 6% above the aveage, espectively. The lagest chinook and fall chum salmon subsistence havests occued in Distict 5, the lagest summe chum salmon havest in Distict 4, and the 1 agest coho sa 1 mon havest in Distict 6. Fi sh wheels accounted fo the majoity of the summe chum, fall chum, and coho salmon subsistence havests, while the majoity of the chinook salmon wee taken by gill net. Escapement Abundance Escapement objectives have been established by ADF&G fo the majo spawning populations of chinook, summe chum, and fall chum salmon fo which a sufficient data base exists (ADF&G 1987). Most escapement objectives ae based on histoical aeial suvey indices of abundance, and ae subject to change as moe complete infomation becomes available. Yukon Rive salmon -5-

spawning escapement index counts and population estimates fo all aeas monitoed in 1986 ae pesented in Table 3. Daily sona, wei, and fishpass salmon escapement counts ae pesented in Appendix Tables Chinook salmon spawn in tibutay steams thoughout the Yukon Rive dainage (Figue 3). Chinook salmon escapement objectives have been established fo the East (l,1-1,6) and West Fok (7-1,) Andeafsky, Anvik (3-5), Noth (5) and South (5) Fok Nulato, Chena (1,-1,7), and Saleha (1,5-3,5) Rives. Weathe conditions wee only intemittently favoable fo aeial suveys of chinook and summe chum salmon escapements in the lowe potion of the Yukon Rive dainage in Howeve, cloud cove, ain, and high wate affected suvey esults in the middle and uppe (Canadian) potions of the dainage. Escapement objectives wee achieved fo all steams in the Alaska potion of the dainage fo which objectives have been established. The Andeafsky Rive (East and West Foks combined) aeial suvey count of 5, 112 chi nook salmon was the lagest eve ecoded. The aeial suvey count fo the Nulato Rive of 2,974 chinook salmon was tiple the objective. Indications of above-aveage chinook salmon escapements to the Koyukuk Rive dainage ae eflected by aeial suvey counts fo the Gisasa Rive (1,346), Henshaw Ceek (561), and the South Fok Koyukuk Rive (556). The 1986 chinook salmon counts ae among the highest eve documented in these steams. Chinook salmon escapements to the Canadian potion of the dainage in 1986 wee simila to those obseved in 1985, and below desied levels. Peak counts in 1986 wee 745 and 73 chinook salmon fo index aeas in the Big Salmon and Nisutlin Rives, espectively. The Whitehose fishway count was 557 chinook salmon, which includes 15 fish taken fo hatchey bood stock. The DFO spawning escapement population estimate was 16, 715 chi nook salmon fo the Yukon Rive dainage in Canada fo This was an impovement fom the 1985 estimate of appoximately 1,8 fish, but still well below the objective of 33, to 43, fish as established by the US/Canada Joint Technical Committee. Spawning pimaily in steams tibutay to the lowe Yukon, Koyukuk, and Tanana Rives (Figue 4), escapement objectives have been established fo summe chum salmon in the East (76,-19,) and West Fok (62,- 116,) Andeafsky, Anvik (487, sona counts), Noth Fok Nulato (37,-53,), Hogatza (1,-17,), and Saleha (3,5) Rives. Summe chum salmon escapement objectives wee achieved fo most spawning aeas in Aeial suvey counts fo the East and West Fok of the Andeafsky Rive wee 83,931 and 99,373 summe chum salmon, espectively, while the towe count estimate fo the East Fok was 167,614 fish. The Anvik Rive sona escapement count of 1, 189, 62 summe chum salmon was moe than doub 1 e the escapement objective. Escapement to the Saleha Rive was double the objective fo that steam, based on a peak aeial suvey count of 8,28 summe chum salmon. Fall chum salmon spawn in sping fed upwelling aeas in steams and sloughs in the uppe potion of the Yukon Rive dainage (Figue 5). Population escapement objectives have been established fo the Sheenjek (62,), Fishing Banch (48,), Toklat (33,), and Delta (11,) Rives. -6- f C'...,.. ( l.. c ct -

---, ' 1 --, j I ;,_-_, Fall chum salmon escapements in 1986 showed a maked impovement fo most index aeas as compaed to the poo escapements of , but wee not as stong as the 1985 escapement 1 evel s. Escapement population estimates of 83,197 fall chum salmon fo the Sheenjek Rive, 31,173 fo the Fishing Banch Rive, 18,93 fo the uppe Toklat Rive, and 6,73 fo the Delta Rive in 1986 wee 34% above, 35% below, 43% below, and 39% below the escapement objectives fo each of these steams, espectively. Delayed opening of the 1 ewe Yukon Rive commeci a 1 fishey may have shifted exploitation to the Tanana dainage stocks, which ae thought to be late unning than Pocupine and uppe Yukon dainage stocks. Compehensive enumeation of fall chum salmon with side-scanning sona was undetaken on the Chanda 1 a Rive fo the fist time in The USFWS estimate was 59,313 fall chum salmon. The DFO spawning escapement estimate was 87,99 fall chum salmon fo the mainstem Yukon Rive dainage in Canada (excluding the Pocupine Rive dainage) in This was an impovement ove the 1985 estimate of appoximately 59, fish, but still slightly below the objective of 9, to 135, fish as established by the US/Canada Joint Technical Committee. Coho salmon spawn in widely scatteed tibutaies thoughout the Yukon Rive dainage, although the majo concentations have been documented in the Tanana Rive dainage (Figue 6). Coho salmon escapement counts ae geneally obtained ancillay to fall chum salmon escapement suvey pioities, theefoe a compehensive data base does not exist. Coho salmon escapements in 1986 appeaed nea aveage o slightly below aveage fo spawning aeas in the Nenana Rive dainage, while they wee above aveage in the uppe Tanana Rive spawning aeas. Age. Sex. and ength Composition Age, sex, and length composition of Yukon Rive salmon catches and escapements in 1986 ae pesented sepaately fo each species. Chinook Salmon: Age composition of the entie Yukon Rive havest of 165,316 chinook salmon in 1986 was estimated to be 41% age 1.4, 27% age 1.3, 24% age 1.5, and 4% age 1. 2, with seveal othe age c 1 asses pesent in small popotions (Table 4, Appendix Tables 15-28). Females accounted fo an estimated 46% of total ive havest. Weake than nomal contibution by age 1.4 and stonge than nomal contibutions by ages 1.3 and 1.5 in 1986 indicate elatively poo poduction fom lage chinook salmon escapements in 198. Distict 1 and 2 combined commecial and subsistence gill net catches compised 65% of the total ive havest. Age and sex composition diffeed between unesticted mesh and 6-in {15.2 cm) maximum mesh size fishing peiods in Disticts 1 and 2 (Appendix Tables 16 and 18), as has been obseved in pevious yeas. Females accounted fo only 25% to 4% of the catch fo esticted mesh size sample peiods, while they accounted fo 43% to 56% of the catch fo unesticted mesh size sample peiods. Age 1.4 was the 1 agest contibuto to catches in the unesticted mesh size sample peiods (44% to 48%), while age 1.3 pedominated esticted mesh catches (47"k to 52%) ~- -7-

Subsistence gill net havests in Disticts 1, 2, 3, and Canada wee not sampled. Since these fisheies utilize the same gea types and occu concuently with the commeci a 1 fisheies in these disticts, commecial havest age and sex fequencies wee applied to the subsistence havests (Appendix Tables 25-28). Because of the significant intemixing of commecial and subsistence gill net and fish wheel catches by fishemen in Disticts 4 and 6, estimates fo both gea types and fisheies wee pooled and assumed to be self-weighting fo each of these disticts (Appendix Tables 2 and 23). Moe intensive sampling effot in Distict 5 allowed fo sepaate catch age and sex. composition estimates by gea type, although commecial and subsistence catches wee poo 1 ed fo each gea type. Results indicate that fish wheels captued a geate popotion of younge male fish than did gill nets. The Distict 5 gill net catch sample was 51% female and 41% age 1.4, while the fish wheel catch sample was only 35% female and 27% age 1.4 (Appendix Tables 21 and 22). Mean size of chinook salmon age goups in the Distict 1 commecial gill net catch anged fom 552 mm fo age-1. 2 to 943 mm fo age-1. 5 males, and fom 762 mm fo age-1.3 to 948 mm fo age-2.5 females (Table 5). Size of chinook salmon in the Distict 5 combined commecial and subsistence fish wheel catch anged fom 515 mm fo age-1.2 to 982 mm fo age-2.5 males, and fom 585 mm fo age-1.2 to 892 mm fo age-2.5 females. Othe catch samples exhibited size fequencies within the ange of the samples fom Disticts 1 and 5 (Table 5). Age, sex, and size composition of chinook salmon samples collected in 1986 but not applied to fishey catches o escapements is pesented in Appendix Table 29. Age-1.4 fish in lowe Yukon Rive escapements (Table 6) wee geneally in 1 owe abundance (22%, 38%, and 31% fo the Andeafsky, Anvik, and Nulato Rives, espectively), and age-1.3 fish wee in highe abundance (7%, 5%, and 5% fo each of these ives, espectively) than in lowe ive commecial catches. Females accounted fo only 23% of the Andeafsky Rive samp 1 e, while they accounted fo 63% of the samp 1 e fo both the Anvik and Nulato Rives. Escapement samples fom the Jim, Chena, and Saleha Rives, tibutaies of the Middle Yukon Rive, wee simila in age composition to lowe ive samples (Table 6). Howeve, females accounted fo only 25% to 4% of the samples collected fom these spawning aeas. Escapements in the Canadian potion of the dainage had moe olde fish and moe females than escapements in the othe egions (Table 6). Ages 1.4 and 1.5 wee the most abundant age goups, accounting fo a combined 53% to 61% of escapements to the thee majo uppe Yukon Rive spawning tibutaies: the Big Salmon, ittle Salmon, and Nisutlin Rives. Females contibuted between 55% and 84% of all samples collected fom these thee spawning aeas. The occuence of fish with two feshwate annuli was much geate in the Uppe Yukon Rive spawning steams than in othe egions of the dainage. Fo example, 31% of the Nisutlin Rive escapement sample was age 2.4 in Aveage size of male chinook salmon in Yukon Rive escapements anged fom 39 mm fo age-1.1 fish fom the Saleha Rive to 1,32 mm fo age-1.5 fish fom the Tesl in Rive in Canada (Table 7). 20 fom 46 mm fo age-1.2 fish fom the Anvik Rive to 955 mm fo age-2.5 fish fom the mainstem Yukon Rive in Canada. Summe Chum Salmon: Summe chum salmon wee sampled fom the Distict 1 commecial gill net fishey, and Distict 4 and 6 commecial fish wheel fisheies in sufficient numbes to pemit estimates of havest by age and sex. Havest estimates fo Disticts 2 and 3 by age and sex wee based on the composition of the Distict 1 sample. Age and sex composition estimates fo commecial gill net havests in Disticts 4, 5, and 6, and fish wheel havest in Distict 5 could not be estimated because of a lack of appopiate sample data. Subsistence havest age and sex composition was estimated using the. commecial catch sample fo that distict and gea type, when available. Th~ numbe of summe chum salmon havested by age, sex, and fishey fo the entie dainage is pesented in Table 8, while age and sex composition fo each fishey is pesented by sample peiod in Appendix Tables Age, sex, and size composition of samples collected but not applied to fishey catches o escapements is shown in Appendix Table 4. Age and sex composition fo 93% of total dainage summe chum salmon havest was estimated (Table 8). Age.4 accounted fo 7% of total havest, followed by ages.3 (29%),.5 (1%), and.2 (.1%). Sex composition was 52% female. Age.3 typically accounts fo the majoity of the summe chum salmon havest in most yeas. The vey stong contibution by age-.4 fish in 1986 is a esult of good poduction fom 1 age escapements in ' '------' Age composition was not substantially diffeent between disticts o gea types. Females made a stonge contibution to uppe ive fish ~heel catches than males, while the opposite was the case fo lowe ive gill net catches. Aveage size by age and sex goup djd not diffe substantially between disticts o gea types (Table 9). These esults ae simila to those of pevious yeas. A tempoal tend in age composition is appaent fo the Distict 1 commecial gill net fishey (Appendix Table 3). As the season pogessed age.4 declined in elative contibution while age.3 inceased. This tend has been noted fo most pevious yeas with sufficient sample data. The East Fok Andeafsky and Anvik Rives wee th.e only summe chum salmon escapements sampled in 1986 (Tables 1 and 11). Age composition diffeed fo the two spawning stocks, with age.4 compising an estimated 68% of the Anvik Rive escapement, and age. 3 accounting fo 61% of the Andeafsky Rive sample. Paent yea escapement to the Anvik Rive was geate in 1981 than in 1982, while the opposite was the case fo the Andeafsky Rive. Sex composition was 55% female fo the East Fok Andeafsky Rive, 58% fo the Anvik Rive. Fall Chum Salmon: Fall chum salmon wee sampled fom Distict 1 and Yukon Teitoy commecial gill net fisheies in sufficient numbes to pemit estimates of havest by age and sex. Havests in Disticts 2 and 3 wee estimated by age and. sex based on the composition of the Distict 1 sample. Age and sex composition -9-

fo commecial gill net and fish wheel havests in Disticts 4, 5, and 6 could not be estimated because of a lack of appopiate sample data. Age and sex composition of subsistence havests wee estimated by applying the commecial catch sample fo that distict and gea type, when available. The numbe of fall chum salmon havested by age, sex, and fishey fo the entie dainage is pesented in Table 12, while age and sex composition fo each fishey is pesented by sample peiod in Appendix Tables Age, sex, and size composition of samples collected but not applied to fishey catches o escapements is shown in Appendix Table 49. Age and sex composition fo 48% of the total dainage fall chum salmon havest was estimated. Age.3 accounted fo 73% of total havest, followed by ages.4 (2%),.2 (6%), and.5 (.4%). Sex. composition was 58% female. Age composition of the 1 owe ive fishey havest was affected by the complete closue of the fall chum salmon commecial fishey fom July 16 though August 3. While the oveall un was composed of an estimated 4% age. 4 fish based on Big Eddy and Middle Mouth test fishing samples (Appendix Table 49), the delayed commecial fishey opeated on that potion of the un dominated by age.3 fish. A tempoal tend in fall chum salmon age composition fo the Distict I commecial gill net fishey, age.4 declining in elative contibution while age.3 inceases as the season pogesses, was evident in This tend had also been obseved in 1985 (Buklis and Wilcock 1986). Size of fall chum salmon in the Distict I commecial gill net catch anged fom 567 mm fo age-. 2 to 617 mm fo age-.4 males, and fom 557 mm fo age-.2 to 596 mm fo age-.4 females (Table 13). Samples collected fom test-fish fish wheels opeated by ADF&G on the noth and south bank of the Yukon Rive in Subdi sti cts 4B and 4C nea Ruby demonstated a diffeence (nonstatistical compaison) in age composition between stocks on the two banks (Appendix Table 49). Age.3. was pedominant fo both samples (56% and 71% fo the noth and south bank, espectively), but age.4 made a stonge contibution to the noth bank sample (42%) than to the south bank sample (26%). A tagging study conducted fom 1976 to 1978 indicated that thee was a substantial diffeence in bank oientation between fall chum salmon stocks in Distict 4 (Buklis 1981). Fall chum salmon bound fo the Pocupine and Uppe Yukon (Canadian) spawning aeas migated pedominantly along the noth bank, whi.le those bound fo the Tanana Rive dainage migated pedominantly along the south bank of the Yukon Rive. Age and sex samples wee collected fom spawning escapements to the Sheenjek, Toklat, and Delta Rives in the Alaska potion of the dainage by ADF&G, and fom the Fishing Banch, mainstem Yukon, and Kluane Rives in Yukon Teitoy by DFO (Table 14). Age compositions anged fom 41% age.3 fo the Sheenjek Rive to 81% age.3 fo the Kluane Rive, and fom 15% age.4 fo the Delta Rive to 5% age.4 fo the Sheenjek Rive. The elative popotion of age.4 in the escapements suppots the diffeential age compositions peviously descibed fo noth and south bank stocks in Distict 4 test-fish catches. Pocupine and Uppe Yukon Rive escapements had a geate popotion of age-.4 fish than did Tanana dainage stocks (nonstatistical compaison). Sex composition was vaiable, anging fom 47% female fo the Toklat Rive to 71% female fo the mainstem Yukon Rive in Canada '. {, t ' ( ' \., "- i ~ (_.

Size of fall chum salmon by age and sex goup was smalle (nonstatistical compaison) fo the Toklat Rive samples than fo the Sheenjek o Delta Rive samples {Table 15). Samples collected fom spawning gounds in Canada by DFO wee measued diffeently, and cannot be diectly compaed. Coho Salmon: Coho salmon wee sampled fom the Distict 1 commecial gill net fishey in sufficient numbes to estimate havest by age and sex. Age and sex composition of havests in Disticts 2 and 3 wee estimated based on the composition of the Distict 1 sample. A small commecial havest of coho salmon in Distict 6 could not be estimated by age and sex because of a lack of appopiate sample data. Age and sex composition of the subsistence havest was estimated based on the commecial catch sample fo that distict. The numbe of coho salmon havested by age, sex, and fishey fo the entie dainage is pesented in Table 16, while age and sex composition fo each fishey is pesented by sample peiod in Appendix Tables Age, sex, and size composition of samples collected but not applied to fishey catches o escapements is shown in Appendix Table 56. Age and sex composition fo 72% of the total dainage coho salmon havest was estimated. Age 2.1 accounted fo 89% of total havest, foll owed by ages 3.1 (9%), and 1.1 (2%). Sex composition was 49% female. Aveage size by age class was simila between sexes fo the commecial gill net catch sample (Table 17), but smalle fo each age and sex goup than in pevious yeas. A coho salmon escapement sample was collected fom the Delta Cleawate Rive fo the thid consecutive yea. Once again, age 2.1 pedominated, accounting fo 84% of the sample {Table 18). Females accounted fo 45% of the esc.apement sample, simila to the sex atio of the commecial catch sample.! -11-
