1 Winte 2019 Wate Flows Though Pennsylvania Wate is all aound you. It is in the gound unde you feet. It flows by you in ceeks. Wate is in the sky, inside of tees and coming out of a gaden hose. When it ains, wate on the gound tavels to the ocean. The wate stays within sepaate egions of land as it flows. Each egion of land caies the wate to new bodies of wate, called watesheds. They can also be called dainage basins. The invisible line that divides one wateshed fom the next is called a wateshed divide. Rain that falls on one side of the wateshed divide will dain into a steam in one wateshed. Rain falling on the othe side will dain into a diffeent wateshed. A ive basin is a land aea that is made up of many watesheds that ae dained by a ive. Thee ae 6 ive basins in Pennsylvania. We call them the majo watesheds.

2 Pennsylvania s Biggest Wateshed In the middle of Pennsylvania, thee is a wide ive. The state capital of Haisbug sits on this ive. Do you know the name of this ive? It is the Susquehanna ve. The land aound the Susquehanna ve makes up the Susquehanna Wateshed. This majo wateshed begins in New Yok. It uns though the cente of Pennsylvania and ends up in Mayland. Of the six majo watesheds in Pennsylvania, thee ae thee lage ones and thee smalle ones. The Susquehanna Wateshed is the biggest wateshed in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PFBC) was fomed in 1866 to help potect the fish in the Susquehanna ve. Today, PFBC potects and conseves aquatic species thoughout Pennsylvania.

3 The Wate in the City of Pittsbugh In westen Pennsylvania, thee ae two ives that flow into Pittsbugh and one ive that flows out. Do you know the names of these thee ives? The Allegheny and Monongahela ives flow into the city. The Ohio ve flows out. The land aound these ives makes up the Ohio Wateshed. The Ohio Wateshed leads wate though the westen pat of Pennsylvania. It is the second lagest majo wateshed in Pennsylvania. It caies wate to the Mississippi ve. Then, it tavels to the Gulf of Mexico, whee the Gulf Steam caies it to the Atlantic Ocean. When you visit Pittsbugh, tavel ove the many bidges, and you will see the ives. You may also see some commecial boats. 4 Pennsylvania s Easten Bode is a ve Pennsylvania s thid lagest majo wateshed has the same name as the ive that is ou easten bode. The city of Philadelphia sits on this ive. Do you know its name? It is the Delawae ve. This ive is also used fo a lot of commecial ships. Visit the Philadelphia watefont, and you may see big ships and tug boats. The Delawae Wateshed is called a tidal basin, due to tidal flows fom the Atlantic Ocean. But, not all pats of the wateshed ae influenced by the tide. Pennsylvania shaes the Delawae ve with fou othe neaby states Delawae, Mayland, New Jesey and New Yok. The ive is home to many fish including migatoy fish that swim up fom the ocean. 5 Most Famous of the Thee Smalle Watesheds The State of Mayland has a big ive called the Potomac ve. Do you know whee this ive goes? It goes to Washington, D.C., ou nation s capital. Pennsylvania has a small pat of the Potomac Wateshed. It is in the lowe southcental pat of Pennsylvania. Wate that will one day flow though Washington, D.C., stats its jouney hee. The Two Smallest Majo Watesheds in Pennsylvania Pennsylvania bodes a big lake in the nothwest pat of the state. It is one of the Geat Lakes. Do you know this lake s name? It is Lake Eie. The city of Eie sits along this lake and is in the Eie Wateshed. The wate fom this majo wateshed flows fom Lake Eie ove Niagaa Falls. Then, it goes down the Saint Lawence ve and out to the Atlantic Ocean. The last majo wateshed in Pennsylvania just touches the nothcental pat of the state. It is the stat of the Genesee ve. Can you guess its name? It is the Genesee Wateshed. This wateshed is in the nothen pat of Potte County, and wate stats its tip in Pennsylvania and flows up into New Yok state.
