2 This afternoon fish is on the lesson plan. But since Anoka is in the Midwest, the supply of fresh sea fish is rather limited. As a second best, Mr Delany rigs up the screen in the front of the classroom. He has brought his pack of slides from the fish industries information office. However, before the slide show starts they find things to discuss as usual. Yes, quite right. Any examples of oily fish? Mackerel, herring, and oh yes, sardines. Jim And whale fish? Okay class. Before we start, a quick re-run of the way we classify fish. Andy? It s not a fish. And I think it is as cruel to hunt it as you do. Andy Fresh-water and sea fish. And oily fish. Quite true. The two main groups are, of course, defined by where they live., why is oily fish an important group? Okay Jim. It is not s fault that Norway hunts whale. But yes, Jim. The whale was in the past caught mainly for its oil. But let s leave the sea mammals alone and concentrate on fish. What about non-oily fish? Oily fish contain a lot of vitamins which dissolve in fat. Like Vitamin D. Kjellaug And the oil from oily fish is also full of omega 3. It is good for the heart. 215

3 Jim Cod, halibut, other flatfish like plaice and sole, and, of course, pollock, haddock and shellfish. Andy Meet, the Tamer of fish! Laughter from the rest of the class Yes, shellfish. That name is rather confusing really, because none of the species in that group are actually fishes. They are either mollusks, like oysters and mussels, or crustaceans, like lobster, crab and crayfish. But so far we have only been talking about sea fish. What about fresh water fish? Well class, most likely means farmed fish, and you have no reason to laugh. Aqua culture is now in the process of developing a technique where the fish they farm is swimming freely in a lake, or a fjord, and is actually tamed to come to be fed at a sound signal and because of that, also to be slaughtered. Kjellaug Monica Salmon, trout and... pike? Oh, no. That sounds awful. They ve come to trust the hands that feed them, and then one day fish and chips!
