1 IN THIS ISSUE Message from the President Chapter meeting Rock on Warriors Evan Foundation 2018 Saltwater Expo Recap Expo Accolades MSSA Scholarship Foundation MSSA News Chapter Leadership Visit us online at March 2018 Message from the President The 2018 Saltwater Expo was held on Saturday, February 24 th and was another huge success. We cannot thank Kevin McMenamin and Glen Stephenson enough for the tremendous effort they gave to this event. Our financial strength as a chapter relies heavily on the success of the Expo and once again the guys came through. They of course could not have pulled it off without the help of all our volunteers. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Rockfish season will begin Saturday, April 21 st and marks the beginning of the best time of the year. All of the hard work and preparations during the winter lead up to opening day! The Boatyard Bar and Grill will kick the season off with their annual catch and release tournament. Along with Anglers (Official Presenting Sponsor) they conduct a great fishing tournament that benefits the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Coastal Conversation Association of Maryland and the Annapolis Police Department s Youth Fishing Camp among several others. The after party is an Annapolis must do that celebrates the beginning of spring and our love of fishing the Chesapeake. I will be fishing with Capt. Stempowski and team Caught Up this year and I hope that many of our members will continue to support this event. Good luck to all and Happy Spring! April 21st also marks the beginning of the 7 th Annual Chapter Rockfish fundraising event benefitting the Evan Foundation. There is still time to get involved and support this great cause. See about the details in this newsletter. The following Sunday, April 29 th, the Annapolis Chapter will be holding our 8 th annual Rock on Warrior event. We will be treating many warriors and their families to a day fishing on the Bay. Following the fishing we will have an awards banquet at the Fleet Reserve to celebrate and thank our warriors for the sacrifices they have made for us and our country. I want to thank in advance the Annapolis Yacht Basin, Fleet Reserve and all the sponsors of this event for their generosity and of course very special thanks go to the boat Captains & Crews for their generous support. See the newsletter for all the details. GOOD LUCK and ROCK on WARRIORS!! Bob Sheehan - President

7 Every year in the U.S., 700 parents are told their child has a deadly pediatric cancer called neuroblastoma. About half are diagnosed with stage IV, high risk disease and are given less than a 30% chance to live. Those lucky enough to survive face a lifetime of physical, emotional and developmental challenges due to years of relentless, toxic therapy. Our son Evan was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma in 2006 at the tender age of 3. We do not know why our special boy developed this insidious disease. We have no family history of neuroblastoma. In fact, we had never heard of this cowardly cancer until our oncologist gave us the devastating news. Evan was a loving, happy and creative child with limitless potential. He fought with unbelievable courage for four years before the disease took him and everything he was going to be. In Evan s memory, we have dedicated ourselves to defeating neuroblastoma. Incorporated in Maryland as a non-profit organization, the EVAN Foundation is a leading supporter of neuroblastoma research. We also sponsor the weekly Treats and Treasures Carts program at Children s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Every Wednesday we visit each room on the oncology floor of the hospital with free toys, candy and other goodies for patients, parents and siblings. We are incredibly grateful to the Annapolis Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association for their support and sponsorship of the annual EVAN Foundation tournament. We hope you can join us this year! With Hope, Wendy and Gavin Lindberg Co-Founders Germantown, MD Evan Lindberg loved to go fishing!
8 Saltwater Fishing Expo 2018 Review Wow! What another awesome job everyone did again at the 2018 Saltwater Fishing Expo! Glenn and I refined the Game Plan and you guys executed the plan flawlessly. This may have been our smoothest running Expo and we have you to thank for helping to make this happen. The Rod & Reel Raffle was another major success. Gene Hoffman and Ricky Holmes got things rolling by working with Keith Fraser at AllTackle to select the prizes and get the tickets printed. Dale Dirks and the Raffle Team did a tremendous job of selling Tickets both prior to and at this year s Expo. A tremendous number of tickets were sold based on the quality of the raffle prizes and the efforts of the Raffle Team and all of our Chapter Members who worked hard to sell tickets in advance. Revenues from the Raffle and Entry Fees have put our Chapter in a very strong financial situation for the next year. The Expo overall was just fantastic! About three dozen Volunteers showed up beginning at O Dark thirty to begin the chaotic dance of getting all of our Vendors settled into their spots while making last minute changes to the Lodge Floor Plan. A Special THANKS goes to the Parking Crew who did a great job of helping attendees find a spot in our diverse parking areas. Our Seminar Speaker Series was very well received once again all three Speakers delivered the goods along with the Panelists at the LT Panel Discussion. We had 140 seats in the Seminar Room and we had most Seminars ranged from 90% full to standing room only. Our Vendors are all top notch as you well know and they sold lots of their quality merchandise. And finally, the Elks Lodge came through with another great Lunch Menu (Pit Beef/Pit Turkey/Pulled Pork/Crab Soup/Raw Oysters) and Bar Service which was very popular with the attendees. The Staff of the Annapolis Elks Lodge does an awesome job of supporting our Expo and if you are ever looking for a large facility to rent give Jim McNally a call. We would greatly appreciate any comments/feedback/suggestions/ideas or whatever that you might have on your mind for the Expo. Glenn and I strive to improve the Expo each year and all our Team brings their unique perspective and observations of the Expo. Thanks to those who gave us suggestions while at the Expo. Thanks again to everyone! Kevin & Glenn PS. The 2019 Expo will be held on Saturday Feb. 23 rd so please add that to your calendar and we would welcome you back as Expo Staff for our 2019 Show!

12 Expo Accolades ** Kudos's to Kevin and Glen and all the volunteers who helped the MSSA Annapolis Chapter #1 pull off another great expo. What a GREAT group of folks we have in our chapter. I'm so very proud to be a member and your Secretary. I'm looking forward as what is going to happen to Big MSSA, but I feel that our chapter will survive this problem and continue to be part of the Annapolis community in the future. We will still support the EVAN Foundation and the Rock on Warrior's Event that will coming up soon as our next projects. Please continue to attend our monthly meetings and support our chapter activities this year. It appears that are finances are on solid ground and in great shape to support our current activities for the rest of this year. Thanks to all our members for your support. I am looking forward to another great fishing season and participating in all the chapter activities this year and in the future. Tight Lines, Fred Menage, Secretary, MSSA Annapolis Chapter #1 ** The Scholarship Foundation would like to add our thanks to everyone involved in planning and executing the highly successful EXPO last Saturday. With the commitment of the Annapolis Chapter to a $1000 cash contribution to the 2018 scholarship fund, a combined total that was generated from the EXPO is $3, We are headed for a new record of scholarship funds that will be awarded in June and want you to know that Annapolis has played a key role in making it possible. Pete Abbott - President, MSSA Scholarship Foundation ** We had a pretty good day selling raffle tickets at the Expo. When it was all said and done on Saturday, the team of Ray Dove, George Brown, Joan Hall, and Dale Dirks sold $2846 in tickets. Thanks Dale Dirks **..another fantastic Expo!! Special thanks to our parking team Ricky Holmes, Tom Taneyhill, Chris Hall and company, our door reception crew led by Jean Hoffman, Perry, Donnie, Chris, Bill and company. Also, many thanks to our raffle ticket sales team of Ray Dove (aka -THE HAWK), Dale Dirks, George Brown and Joan Hall. Great job guys thank you so much for the effort. All proceeds transferred to the Annapolis Chapter operating account to fund 2018 Chapter activities. Bob Sheehan President
13 MSSA Scholarship Foundation Update Well done and thanks to everyone who participated in the Scholarship Program events at the EXPO. Tracy Dirks, please pass to Dan, as he is always a welcome member of our team. To Pete Reid, Earl Macey and Brad Bettencourt, special thanks for the lifting and hauling of all the merchandise that made this show a great success. It is of special note that after the show, Bob Sheehan, President of the Annapolis Chapter, and Jean Hoffman, the Treasurer, informed me that Annapolis will donate a cash gift of $1000 prior to the award of 2018 scholarships, raising their contribution this year to $ and have allocated $250 for a Gift Certificate good for fishing trips aboard MORNING STAR with Captain Monty Hawkins out of OC, MD as a Prize in our Raffle. The support of the Chapter for our program is reflected not only in these stellar financial results, but in the planning and hospitality orchestrated by Kevin McMenamin and Glenn Stephenson, event coordinators for the Annapolis EXPOs. Kevin, we could not have asked for more consideration, space or service by the many members of your event team. Please tell them that the Scholarship Program appreciates all they do to make this show a special experience for both vendors and guests. To put into perspective the importance of these shows at which we conduct both flea markets and raffle ticket sales, in the 4 days, 1 at Frederick, 2 at Kent Island, and 1 at Annapolis, counting cash donations, flea markets and raffle sales, over $10,000 have accrued to our treasury in January and February. We have 4 more days left on our calendar, 2 at Essex and 2 at Southern Maryland. I expect similar results, and when you take into consideration that our best year ever was 2017 when we awarded $32,000 to 19 students, you can see why I am so optimistic that we will break that record and perhaps by a wide margin this summer. We will continue raising funds until late May for scholarships this year. No matter the nature and severity of MSSA's problems, I encourage all the Annapolis members to continue to donate items for the remaining flea markets, buy your raffle tickets to have a chance at winning some of the best prizes in town, and support the Ron Schaefer Scholarship with a personal donation. Mail your check payable to MSSA SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION to me at 219 Overture Way, Centreville, MD Pete Abbott President Scholarship Foundation MSSA NEWS Based on the opinion of the Board at the Feb. 22 Board of Directors meeting, MSSA will not be holding the 2018 Championship on the Chesapeake Spring Tournament this year. Ending a 34-year tradition comes with a heavy heart but our current situation simply will not allow us to conduct a successful tournament.
14 Please pass this along to your chapter members. We owe it to our members to let them know of the tournament cancellation as soon as possible. I have spoken to the MD DNR and they are aware of the cancellation of this tournament.
