1 Visit us online at March 2013 IN THIS ISSUE Message from the President Saltwater Fishing Expo Review Rod and Reel Raffle Rock on Warriors MSSA/Evan Foundation Tournament Summer Fishing Trip Chapter Speaker Line-Up! Calendar of Events inner of The Reel Raffle MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It s time to mark your calendar and paint your bottoms. Get ready boys and girls! Leading off this year is the annual Boatyard Bar and Grill Tournament on opening day Saturday, April 20 th. This is a fantastic event and a great way to support many charities and have a great time doing it. I strongly encourage everyone to get involved and support a really fun catch and release event. The following day Sunday, April 21 st, is the Annapolis Chapter s 4 th annual ROCK on Warriors Day. This is a very special day for our chapter. We look forward to taking a few warriors and their families fishing for the day and in return we have a chance to thank them for their service and sacrifice to our Country. Opening day also marks the beginning of our second annual inner chapter competition benefiting the Evan Foundation. Check the news letter, or better yet attend our March 20 th chapter meeting for details on all of the upcoming tournaments and events. Early May brings us the 30 th annual MSSA Championship on the Chesapeake spring Rockfish tournament. This is the premier fishing competition on the bay. This is also the main event for our MSSA organization and I look forward to the competition, fellowship and bubba Rock at the scales! Good Luck to all! Special thanks to Kevin McMenamin, Peter Abbott, Dale Dirks and every chapter member who gave their time and energy to another extremely successful Saltwater Fishing Expo. I would also like to personally thank all of the vendors for supporting our event and we look forward to you all returning next year. Many thanks also go to our guest speakers for their excellent presentations. Thank you everyone! We have gotten off to a great start this year and I can t wait to see what the rest of the year brings us. Thank you for your continued support. Bob Sheehan President Raffle Winners Mr & Mrs Chris Hall
2 MARCH 20th CHAPTER MEETING The Speaker for the March 20th Chapter Meeting will be the legendary Captain Hank DeVito and his Mate Captain Danny Love. Hank has a quarter of a century experience fishing the Bay with a tremendous amount of knowledge to share. He will be sharing the tackle and techniques he uses when Live Lining for Stripers. Our Tackle Vendor will be Gary Richie with Spankin Stripers Lures. Gary offers a distinctive line of baits that are proven to catch Trophy Stripers in the Spring including his Parachute Baits with glow in the dark eyes. Mark your calendar and join us for a very informative presentation. ALL ARE WELCOME. The meeting will be held Feb 20th at 7:30pm at American Legion Post #7 at route 450 and Crownsville Road in Annapolis. The American Legion offers a Wings & Steamed Shrimp Special along with light fair (Burgers, Pizza, Sandwiches) and a full Service Bar. Brian Stempowski 2013 SALTWATER FISHING EXPO REVIEW The 19th Annual Saltwater Fishing Expo was another great success. Attendance was strong despite the gloomy weather and feedback we received from all the attendees, vendors, speakers, the Elk s Lodge, Sponsors and our own chapter members was very positive. PropTalk Magazine and AllTackle played a pivotal role at this year s event by providing significant advertising and exposure throughout the Bay Region Community of Anglers. Our Seminar Program included 3 outstanding speakers with Captains Charlie Sisson, Keith Neal, and Wayne Morgan covering 3 different methods of catching saltwater fish. The Rod & Reel Raffle was also another big success once again this year. There were approximately 2 dozen Chapter Volunteers who staffed our event this year. Our Set Up Crew included Brian Stempowski, Jean Hoffman, Ricky Holmes, Art D Amico, Joe Meny, Warren Meny, Ed Kalb, George Brown, Bob Sheehan, and Bob Thompson along with Jim McNally and Bernard from the Elks Lodge who helped with setting up the facility on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. A lot of work goes into staging the facility for the arrival of our Vendors and then assisting them with getting their gear moved to their assigned space for setup and display. On the front line Saturday morning was Bob Thompson, Ricky Holmes, George Brown, Matt Brennan, Steve Geddes, and Ed Kalb who had the toughest job of the day working outside and assisting our attendees with finding parking spots. Five hours outside in a cold drizzle will test anyone s resolve but these guys came through with great attitudes and team coordination to get the job done. Jean Hoffman, Bob Sheehan, Perry Masden, Don Price, Brian Stempowski, and Peter Browne staffed the front entrance and did a great job of getting folks into the Expo and of course, collecting their $5 entry fee. Dale Dirks, Ed Kalb, Ray Dove, Bill Walling, George Bell, and Kacie Sheehan did an awesome job of selling Rod & Reel Raffle Tickets at this year s Expo. We had yet another successful and profitable raffle based on the quality of the raffle prize and the efforts of Dale and all of our Chapter Members who worked hard to sell tickets. Lots of items magically appeared on the Scholarship Table Saturday morning. Earl Macey, OB, Joe Meny, Warren Meny, Brad Dubick, Lee Slagle, and Glenn Stephenson manned our Scholarship Flea Market Tables and Membership/Tournament Tables. They did a fantastic job of selling the numerous donated items while selling Scholarship Raffle Tickets and renewing memberships to MSSA. The result was a record breaking all time high revenue day for the Scholarship Foundation which put a huge smile on Pete s face. Fred Menage and Drew McMenamin helped with running the Seminar Series assisting the three excellent speakers set up for their presentations while also guiding the attendees to any open seats. It was a packed room all day and they did a great job of finding seats for as many people as possible. Special thanks to Fred again for also being our Doughnut Man on Saturday bringing the doughnuts for everyone to enjoy
3 before we opened the doors at 8AM. We d also like to extend our thanks to the Annapolis Elks Lodge, Jim McNally the Lodge Manager, Bernard Gross, Heather Yellowthunder and their entire Staff. They provided a great Lunch Menu (Pit Beef/Pulled Pork/Crab Soup/Raw Oysters) which was very popular with the attendees and they have opened up this modern and spacious facility to our Expo. The Elks Lodge is not permitted to advertise but they do run a very efficient and professional rental hall facility. Please keep them in mind if you have an upcoming Reception, Birth Day Party or Special Event where you want to host your guests in a great facility at a very reasonable price. Thanks also go to Katcef Brothers, the local Aneheiser Busch Distributor, for sponsoring the Michelobe Ultra Bar Special at the Expo along with the Roadside Banner promoting the Expo. Finally, we would like to thank all of the Chapter Members who attended or purchased Raffle Tickets, their Friends, MSSA Members from around the region, and everyone else who attended this year s Expo. Thanks to you, the 2013 Expo was yet another big success for our Vendors, Our Speakers, and the MSSA Annapolis Chapter. We apologize for anyone that we missed and we offer our heartfelt THANKS and WELL DONE to everyone who helped to make this show a success. See you next year at the 2014 Expo. Pete Abbott Kevin McMenamin Expo Co-Chairmen 2013 Annapolis Chapter Rod and Reel Raffle Thanks again to everyone who participated in the Rod and Reel Raffle to raise funds for the Annapolis Chapter. The year s winner was a local fellow named Chris Hall. He was very pleased to have won the raffle. The Annapolis Chapter took in a total of $4329 from ticket sales. Subtract out the expenses, and we were able to raise just a little over $3000 for the chapter this year a tremendous effort! Special thanks to Ed Kalb, Ray Dove, Bill Walling, George Bell, and Kacie Sheehan, for managing the raffle during the Saltwater Expo. Another successful effort to go along with a great Expo! Dale Dirks th Annual Rock-On Warriors th Annual Rock-On Warriors: The Annapolis Chapter of the MSSA is proud to once again host its annual Rock-On Warriors fishing event for wounded warriors and their families and care givers. This year s event will take place on Sunday, April 21, 2013, beginning around 8 am. We will fish out of The Fleet Reserve, which, like in previous years, has graciously offered to host the event and its festivities. There are twelve boats scheduled to take approximately 40 participants trophy rock fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. All boats will be flying large American flags and other fishermen in the area are encouraged to swing by the boats and say thanks to the warriors for their service and sacrifices. An awards ceremony will follow at The Fleet Reserve Club. George E. Brown 2013 Annapolis Chapter MSSA/Evan Foundation Tournament Once again the Annapolis Chapter of the MSSA will team up with the Evan Foundation to raise funds for research into neuroblastoma-a rare and deadly pediatric cancer. This year s spring trophy rockfish tournament will feature a slightly different format with more sponsors and an event-ending cookout for tournament participants. The entry fee will be $100 and you will be able to enter at the chapter meetings, by , through the mail, or at any of our sponsor locations. Look for the tournament brochure coming soon! Dale Dirks
4 SUMMER FISHING TRIP MSSA Annapolis's summer fish trip is shaping up to be a sold out event. The trip is scheduled for Wednesday July 17th out of Chesapeake Beach. We will be fishing with Captain Randy Dean on the Bay Hunter and Bay Hunter II. We leave the dock a 1PM and return at 7pm. We will be live lining for Stripe Bass and then go bottom fishing for spot, croaker and perch. All you need to bring is what you want to eat and drink. All fishing gear is provided and your catch will be cleaned. The price includes the mates tip. Cost is $85 for MSSA Annapolis members and their families. Non members and guests are $110. I only have four slots left so me your request for a slot. I will let you know what is available. You will then need to send me your check. Make check Payable to MSSA Annapolis Chapter and on the memo line put July fishing trip. This is a very poplar event so act quickly or you will be disappointed. Ron Schaefer CHAPTER SPEAKER LINE-UP March 20th Captain Hank Devito will be doing a talk on "Live Lining for Stripe Bass". Hank runs the charter boat "Afternoon Delight" out of Breezy Point Marina. Hank will bring a quarter century of fishing knowledge to share with us. He will be assisted by his Mate Captain Danny Love. Captain Hank tells me there is no one on the bay better at Live Lining. He has perfected the technique. He will cover rods, reels, line, weighs, hooks and more. Don't miss this opportunity to get some pointers from the master. Captain Hank has a great sense of humor so it will be a lively question and answer period after the presentation. As an added attraction Gary Richie of Spankin Striper baits will be set up before and after Hanks program to offer his complete selection of baits at show prices. April's meeting: will feature Captain Randy Dean of Bay Hunter Charters. Randy will cover rigging, baits and your spring trolling spread. The season opens three days after our meeting. I have asked Captain Jerry Norton of Holy Mackerel Tackle to come with his "candy store" of lures and tackle. He will offer you show prices before and after the program. May's meeting: will feature Captain Mark Galasso of "Tuna The Tide" charters. Mark will present a power point presentation on "Light Tackle Fishing in Eastern Bay". He will talk about jigging and live lining. Captain Mark runs a 35 foot Markley, it will be interesting to see how a larger boat chases fish. Captain Mark has 37 years of experience fishing Eastern Bay. As always there will be a question and answer period after the talk. June's meeting: will feature Shawn Kimbro. I really don't think I need to introduce Shawn. He is simply one of the top, light tackle, amateur fisherman on the bay. Shawn has a new Power Point presentation called "The Right Stuff, Gear, Tackle, and Attitudes for Successful Light Tackle Fishing". This is a DO NOT MISS presentation. Shawn will have copies of his book to sell and he will personally sign them. I have read the book and it is not only informative, but it is sprinkled with wonderful humor. Any questions?
