5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I believe that the work we do in cooperation with the Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, The Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the Maine Lake s Associations, our State Legislature and of course those entities sponsoring our organization, every day is so very important. Because we do what we do, the sport of Bass Fishing in Maine is becoming more recognized, popular and fruitful. Encouraging families, children and others to take to the waters of Maine, enjoying the splendor that others from around the country travel to Maine to enjoy. We truly are blessed living and thriving here in Maine. IT S ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY! I, for one, am still feeling the energy and excitement from the 2014 season! Special thanks to the executive board for their leadership in planning the events and to the general membership for stepping up every time they were asked. To all who actively participated in the 2014 youth programs (Statewide), helping to win the early season Challenge on Damariscotta Lake, participating in the Travis Mills and other veteran s programs, showing up and/ or speaking at the legislative hearings, participated in the Fish-Off, the State Team, attended our Monthly Delegates meetings and our annual award Banquet, thank you! Thank You for making the 2014 season memorable. On a personal note 2014, provided my wife Pat and I with three granddaughters bringing the grandchildren count now to six. I was 24 years old when I fished my first bass tournament, who knew! To each and everyone of you, family first, to health & happiness and remember that we are a family, take care of one another. I am also very optimistic about the 2015 season. We are off to a good start in 2015, participating in the Milfoil summit, planning the Fathers Day/Travis Mills benefit, preparing to host yet another Governor s Cup event and the list goes on. The can do attitude of our organization each year is a testament to the character of its members. I recently read a quote from Jim Watkins (whoever he is) that I think applies to us. He said A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence. Thanks for all you do! Steve Wilson President MAINEB.A.S.S Nation 3

9 Bronzeback Mainiacs BronzeBack Mainiacs Bronzeback Mainiacs is a Lewiston/Auburn based club that was established in We have six club tournaments per year and run our Annual Bronzeback Open in Sept. every year for the last 20 years. We are strong advocates for protecting the environment and our Natural Resources in an effort to not only preserve the condition of our lakes, ponds and rivers, but hopefully improve them for future generations. We have built, installed and maintained fishing line recovery and plastic bait recycling stations at 5 area boat ramps in Central Maine. We always try to leave a ramp cleaner than it was when we arrived. In an effort to keep invasive weeds from spreading in our lakes we adhere strictly to the Boat inspection process during all of our tournaments. Boat inspections are not only for tournament days however, and our members check for weeds on our rigs every time we put our boats and trailers in and out of the lake. Every year we have various members who graciously volunteer their time to worthy programs within the Maine Bass Nation. Some of those programs are the Camp Sunshine program where fishermen take out terminally ill children and their families for some fishing. We also have members who volunteer with Youth fishing clubs as boat captains as well. All are great causes and we are proud to say that Bronzeback Mainiacs had members volunteer for each of these events. Every year we raise money at our open for a charity and this year we are continuing our Support of Riding ToTheTop, a very worthy cause which provides therapeutic horseback riding opportunities to people with all kinds of special needs. Our Open in 2014 unfortunately had to be cancelled a couple days prior to the event due to extremely low and dangerous water conditions at Androscoggin Lake where it was scheduled to be held. We did our best to spread the word though all of our contacts and social media to alert anglers in time so they didn t drive to the tournament site for nothing. We apologize if the news didn t reach everyone in time. The 2015 Bronzeback Open will be held at Androscoggin River on Sept 20th, now that the new bridge is now completed. After two years of greatly reduced fishing pressure on the river due to the bridge construction, the river should be fishing very well. So be on the lookout this spring for our bright pink Bronzeback Open application booklets at tackle shops, marinas and sporting goods departments this spring and summer. We look forward to seeing all of our old friends there and hopefully lots of new ones as well Top Three Anglers: 1st place Mike Thibault 2nd place Doug LePage 3rd place Jamie Lobb 2014 Lunkers of the Year: Smallmouth - 4lbs o oz caught by John Farrand Largemouth - 6lbs 7oz caught by John Farrand The club officers for 2015 are as follows: President / Treasurer/ Tourney Dir. 11 Capital Area Bassmasters had a great 2nd year as part of the Maine BASS Nation. We had our highest membership since we started and kept our focus on smaller lakes with good fish and held our one annual open on Three Mile Pond. Tragedy struck our community last year when a local family that played a big part in the Community was diagnosed with cancer. CAB held our Three Mile Open in support of that family and donated the proceeds to help them cover the costs of treatment. Capital area also partnered with Man vs. Bass Maine Trail to host the China Lake open in June. With 54 boats, it was the largest event in the trail for 2014 and we are pleased to be partnering with them again this year to co-host on 06/28/15. We are going back to Three Mile Pond for our open again on 08/02/15. The Harris brothers have won this event 4 years in a row. Can anyone de-thrown them? For 2015 our club tournaments will be on: North Pond, Wilson Pond, Tacoma Lakes, Echo Lake, Great Moose Pond and China Lake. If interested in joining CAB please contact one of the officers. 14 Youth Director s Report 2014 was an exciting year for our youth program. High school and college bass fishing are the fastest growing segments of our sport and our new high school program has shown slow but steady growth throughout the year. We now have four high schools and one community club in our High School program. In 2014 one of the high school teams from Noble High School traveled to Tennessee to compete in the B.A.S.S. High School Open on Douglas Lake. Although they did not win, they had a great experience, learned a lot & won a prize package for traveling the farthest distance. The 2013 Maine High School champion team from Windham Christian Academy, Alex Williamson & Joe Curtis traveled to Kentucky to compete at the first ever B.A.S.S. High School National Championship. They had a great time at Kentucky Lake and gained valuable experience for the future. Our 2014 high school state championship had eleven teams participate. The Windham Christian Academy team of Alex Williamson & Daniel Rodgers and Belfast Area High School team of Parker LaFrance & Luke Chadwick qualified to advance to the 2015 B.A.S.S. High School National Championship. The high school state champions will also be part of our 2015 state team that competes at the B.A.S.S Nation Eastern Divisional on the Connecticut River. Our Junior Bassmaster program continued a gradual transition to become more focused on younger anglers not in high school. The Junior Bassmaster program is our tool to introduce and hook youth & their parents on fishing and to develop the youth s fishing knowledge and skills to prepare them for competition at the high school level. Watch for a new series of Adult/Youth opens in 2015 to help promote youth fishing & increase our Junior Bassmaster membership. There was no change in 2014, when it came to awarding the club with the best overall youth program. Congratulations to Central Maine Bassmasters, the 2014 Youth Award winners. Their involvement with the Boy Scouts, Pine Tree Camp for crippled children and their support of local community projects and events impact a large number of youth each year. I would like to encourage everyone to continue the great work you are already doing with getting more youth involved in our sport. Thank you for all of your efforts in getting more youth fishing. Whether you helped at a Camp Sunshine event, Pine Tree Camp, supported Jr Bassmaster or High school events or just took a child from down the street out fishing, your efforts are commendable and very necessary to continue the growth of our sport. Our club is always looking for more members, so if you are unable to get a club started at your high school, contact the Maine BASS Nation youth director to get the denial form & become a member in our club. Don t let our club name fool you we will accept members We accept members from anywhere in Maine as long as you love bass fishing! from anywhere in Maine as long as you love bass fishing. This year one of our teams, Jacob Gauvin & Hunter Pate, finished third at the Maine BASS high school championship in spite of having boat problems. Our club s conservation project consisted of performing the invasive weed inspections at the Permaquid state ramp and the ramp at Duck Puddle Campground for all of the boats in the Maine Junior Bassmaster Championship. We would like to thank the volunteer adult boaters (Dads) who made it possible for us to fish in the tournament. 24 Central Maine Bassmasters In 2014 Central Maine Bassmasters continued their dedication to the youth and conservation efforts in their area. Here are some of the highlights. We started with the Klondike Days with the Boy Scouts in January, followed by an ice-fishing trip with the same Scouts in February. We also began the organization of the Earth Day Clean-up. We have organized and run this event for the last fifteen years. In April we held the Earth Day Cleanup with the help of over 65 volunteers and picked up 4 truckloads of trash from the sides of 10 miles of roads. We also helped the Boy Scouts with their merit badges on conservation and fishing. In June we purchased and helped plant trees with these Scouts to form a buffer zone on China Lake. We have been working with these scouts for the last nineteen years. Then in July we held our Pine Tree Camp fishing day on North Pond. This event put 80 Handicapped children (20 confined to wheel chairs) in our boats for some fishing time on the lake. For most of these campers this would be the very first time they were to be in a boat. We have been doing this event for the last sixteen years. In August we went to China Village for their Community Days Youth Fishing Derby. We had children ages 2 to 14 fishing from shore on the causeway and believe me this was no easy thing. In addition we again worked with the I.F. & W. with biologist reports and surveys and continued our lake cleanups and boat inspections. In 2014 Central Maine Bassmasters had some time left over to go fishing too. Central Maine held seven club tournaments taking our top six weights and the top five anglers were: 1st place Josh Blackwood with lbs, 2nd place Rich Dorr with lbs, 3rd place Kevin Busch with lbs, 4th place Scott Laliberty with lbs, and 5th place Mike Duricko with lbs. 25 Somerset Bassmasters 2014 was another eventful year for the Somerset Bassmasters as we again stayed as busy as we can with a small membership roster. We fished five club tournaments, hosted two opens, combining one with a conservation project, and again helped out with a youth project through the local high school. Our club tournaments were all small in attendance but we all caught fish and had a good time on the water. The overall standings for the year were even closer this year with Dennis Carrier and Chuck Towns tying for Angler of the Year. Congratulations to Chuck Towns again this year for qualifying for the State Team at the fish-off on Damariscotta Lake. We were able to help with a youth project with Madison High School. We weren t able to schedule our spring fishing trip but did, at the last minute, manage to assemble and start a high school fishing team. Our conservation efforts were limited to participation with the Maine Volunteer Lake Monitoring Project. We have discontinued our association with the Somerset County Soil and Water Conservation Project for now. We will be dedicating proceeds from our Kennebec River Open Tournament to support our youth project. Our club is always looking for new members who like to fish and can commit a few days a year to help with our projects. We still meet at the Purple Cow Restaurant in Fairfield at 6pm on the first Monday of each month that we don t hold a tournament (Nov April). Anyone interested can contact me or any club member. 27 Eagle Bassmasters Eagle Bassmasters again, had a very busy year in On our 2014 Camp Sunshine fishing days the fishermen/women took over 250 children fishing on Sebago Lake. We eagerly look forward to 2015, in which we plan to assist with projects/tournaments designed to assist disabled veterans. These projects will be announced on the Nation website. Eagle welcomes non-members to join in these rewarding projects. At the State Fish-Off, in September, Eagle dominated by winning the Club Challenge. This was Eagle s fourth year in a row at winning the fish-off club challenge, placing members on all four state teams. Eagle members, Bill Rider and Steve Wilson made the 2015 state team, and will be fishing in the B.A.S.S. Eastern Divisional tournament in September. Eagle is proud to mention that Steve made all three out of four of the teams mentioned, as well as others not mentioned WELL DONE STEVE! Eagle wishes the Maine State Team a safe and fruitful tournament in September. In February, with the assistance of the Buxton/Hollis Rod and Gun Club, Eagle held our annual children s ice fishing day and Casting Kids event. Prizes were awarded for first though third in three different age brackets, first through third in two different fish catching catagories and many door prizes to include a lifetime fishing license were awarded. Eagle members look forward to supporting the open tournaments this year. We will be hosting our annual Invitational tournament on Moose Pond, Bridgton, Maine, September 6, with the assistance of the Pleasant Mountain Camp Ground and Shawnee Peak. 30 Southern Maine Anglers Southern Maine Anglers founded in 1983, is based in Buxton, ME. We hold monthly meetings on the first Thursday of each month at the Southern Maine Beagle Club. New members are always welcome. This past year, SMA was very proud to have our own George Cooper once again represent for Maine at the 2014 Nationals finishing in third place for the Eastern Division and twelfth overall, this was George s third trip to the BASS Nation National Championship, nice job George! As an added benefit of becoming a regular at the national level, George has made many friends and contacts in the BASS organization. The featured speaker this year at the annual Maine BASS Nation awards banquet was John Stewart, the B.A.S.S. Nation Director who just happened to have some free time available before the evening event. Hmmm, a frigid November day in Maine with free time, a threetime National Championship qualifier, and his tournament partner just happen to live nearby and the lakes had not frozen over, yet. Bundled like Arctic Circle explorers George and his tournament partner Dwayne Turnage spent the afternoon patiently explaining to John the finer points of scoring a triple on the first cast with Silver Buddy blade lures. There was rumor of a possible false start foul on the firstfish-in-the-boat competition but it was unconfirmed. The pictures attest to both their skill as teachers and the fact that those silly looking chunks of metal really do catch fish though George reports, John s a better fisherman than he lets on. like us on Each year SMA hosts seven club tournaments and one Open tournament. Two of our club tournaments, held in July, are a back-to-back Saturday Sunday event, with an overnight stay at a local camp. It is always a fun event, with a lot of storytelling and ribbing about the fish that didn t make it into the boat, and when we can get a lakeside camp a fire-works display to top off the evening. This year s Cobboseecontee Open tournament will be launched out of The Birches Campground. Generally, a hot breakfast is available at the lodge prior to the tournament, as well as hot dogs and refreshments at the weigh in. We are expecting a great turnout, and hope to see you there. Each year Southern Maine Anglers donates a portion of our tournament proceeds to a local charity. For a second year in a row, our club-selected charity was; Spurwink on the Slopes, a ski program for children with autism run in conjunction with the Sugarloaf Mountain Ski School. This is a free program, developed by Spurwink of Portland Maine, at Sugarloaf Mountain ski area in Kingfield Maine; the program provides free ski lessons, as well as, volunteer personal coaches experienced with autism spectrum disorders to help facilitate a positive experience for each participant in the program. It would be tough to pick just one. Watching my father catch a 6.2 Smally on a Pop R with ultra-light gear certainly would be one of them. Watching one of my best friends set on a 7 pounder in a tournament was another. Surviving a lightning strike in a tournament and cashing a check that covered most of the electronics that were fried was certainly memorable. My first tournament wins in Maine and Florida stand out as well. I have been fortunate enough to bring several people along for their first tournament victories, fishing as teams and individually. After over 20 years of tournaments and many wins, sometimes you forget just how important it is to get that first win and the feeling it gives an aspiring tournament fisherman, to see their hands shake a little after catching a lunker and putting it in the livewell, to witness that nervousness and excitement that fades a little after hundreds of tournaments, to see their face after the weigh-in is over and they receive their first tourney check and trophy, and knowing they are hooked. 32

I had fished the same one in the past and struggled to find many fish. I started my day out in the very middle of the lake, despite the strong winds in the forecast. 35 degrees, 40 to 50 mph winds with gusts to 60! Within 30 minutes I had put 3 nice smallies in the boat but the wind was picking up. I hooked into a nice 3.5lb smallmouth and put it in the live well. When I looked back up to make a cast, I was 150 yards off the spot I was catching them. My trolling motor couldn t battle the wind forward, so I had to fire up the big motor to get back to where I had been. The fish were all over a particular jerkbait, but if you ve tried to fish one in gale force winds, you know a cast ends up 40 yards from where you aimed and doesn t go very far. Unable to hit my target, with my trolling motor on high, I had to abandon my hot spot around noon. After almost being blown off the deck of the boat several times in 45 degree water, I ran to a sheltered bank. I caught about 10 more fish over the rest of the day but I couldn t cull out any fish. I realized quickly, the ones I had out in the middle were better than I thought. Heading back to the takeoff was an adventure in itself. The 50mph wind was blowing directly into the launch. Waves crashed and boats slammed into the shore. To make matters worse, a friend s boat had broken a steering cable, had dead trolling motor batteries, and was heading for the back of the cove. I jumped in my boat and idled over to him battling the 5-6 foot waves. While being tossed around like in a big washing machine, we managed to get a rope on his bow and pulled him to safety. To some, this sounds like an awful day on the water. For me it was one of my favorite tournaments, and some of the most fun I ve had on the water. Having won the tournament likely helped, but the challenge and adventure of the experience is what I enjoyed most. 35

I landed the fish, we won the tournament, and you would think for all that I would of got lunker SM. No such luck got edged out by an ounce but I ll take a win any day. 37

Like me, he would go fishing everyday possible if he was able to. It was his first real trip out on the water so he was very excited. He carried his bright orange and blue 3 spincast rod sport n his favorite superhero like it was the best thing in the world. The pond was calm so I dropped the trolling motor down and headed to a nearby bank with some good wood cover and rigged a 4 senko on for him. Months of practice casting from the couch to the TV in the living room kept me from taking over the casting duties. For every two or three nose-dives next to the boat he would cast one feet. Of course a few would just fly off and smack the leaf of a big oak. He liked to fish like he was burning a spinnerbait. It worked just long enough to where I saw that 6 lb test line jump on the surface. When he started reeling it back in all he said was, whoa daddy, big one. That 3 pounder came to the surface quickly and then decided to head for cover. Big one daddy, he kept saying. The drag system in that reel wasn t the best so it was rippin pretty good. But he kept pulling and reeling and eventually got m in. I lipped the fish and saw the look on his face and that is what it s all about for me. Just like the days when my dad use to take me fishing and had to pull the trebles out from one of his shirts. Those are the moments I will always remember. 38

Best Fishing Story: True story, I in a moment of bravado suggested my number two grandson, Gage, go fishing with me and he agreed that it may be fun. Now remember he was only four years old and I had never even been alone with my own sons at that age for more than a few minutes. Bravado was gone I was in trouble. The next day we set out to a small pond nearby, Gage and I. I have for years worked with Camp Sunshine so I started tending to his casting needs and was quickly informed that he was quite capable of doing this himself. To my surprise he was right as he cast and caught a fish on his very first attempt. After another 4-5 casts I suggested I go to the front of the boat and fish myself. For the next five hours we each caught over 30 bass each with me only netting his catch occasionally. We ate lunch, he drove the boat around, and we had a great day. I left out the laughter, the taunting, the talking smack, etc., that took place but just know that I had a great time, who knew. Point is take a kid fishing, he is not the only one that will walk away with good memories. PS: watch out for Gage Wilson as I expect he will be on the water competing this year a time or two. This is still the best fishing story I have. Steve Wilson 42

We caught a lot of big fish and had a ton of fun. This past summer, I made two trips back to Lake Champlain with my dad, although this time we stayed on the southern end of the lake. The difference between the top and the bottom of the lake is like night and day- you would think you had fished two different lakes. However, we caught plenty of fish on the southern end as well. The ride to the southern end of the lake was incredible, with mountains and trees and farmland everywhere. On our second return to the lake this past summer, I had the opportunity to compete in the New Hampshire State Fish-off. On Day 1, I was paired with Tim Dube, a 19 year old, and together we made up the youngest boat on the first day of the tournament. He ended up competing in the 2013 divisional tournament on Sebago several weeks later, so it was really neat to meet up with him again. Neither of us ended up making the top 12 after the second day, but it was still an awesome experience. Also, the times I beat my dad while fishing are always at the top of my list of best fishing stories. 45
