Following from this interpretation, Chas moved that the motion to amend Rule as moved and passed at the April General Meeting, but subsequently cancelled at that April Meeting after considerable discussion about the validity of making rule changes without prior notice, now be adopted, seconded Peter Stoeckel. The motion is to change the last two lines of Rule from Level Line Artificial Bait OR Level Line 56 gram (max) 2 casts. to Level Line Artificial Bait 2 casts AND Level Line 56 gram (max) 2 casts. Discussion included that there is nothing in the rules to prevent making changes to Competition Rules without formal notice before the April General Meeting, the time taken for the extra casts due the very good attendance at the May dry casting, and the later 9:00am start during winter months. The May Rottnest trip was a great success and it is on again in August. Congratulations to Joe Pullella on his 16.85kg Shark caught on the May trip. It may be Polar Bear Time, but the fishing can be exceptionally good. Ask some of the old hands about their catches. I personally have participated in most Rottnest FD s for 20 + years as they are very good values with great social atmosphere and potential for some exciting fishing. So start stocking up on Scotch and Port for the Saturday night. I would recommend that all members who do not have a wet suit purchase or borrow one as the water temp is on the way down. You can fish from areas where you do not need to stand in the briny I have organised accommodation at the Caroline Thompson units for 12 members so far and also transport to West end for Saturday and Sunday. At least one ferry company is now implementing (I believe it is a $ grab) the Island Board ruling of only two items of luggage per person and with a size and weight restriction of 20 kg. We receive only two luggage vouchers per person. After this they charge a penalty rates. I am looking at other ferry companies to see who will give us a fair go. Please keep your gear to a reasonable level and pack it in containers and label it appropriately. The cost of accommodation, transport and ferry should be $100 - $110. A deposit of $50 will be required at or before the June general meeting. Full payment is required by the July meeting. Remember to protect your rods for the trip across on the ferry If any new members are thinking of participating please give it a go as it is a great trip. Please contact me as I am more than happy to provide information and advice. If required we will have an instruction period at the August general meeting. Tight Lines, Cookie Field Day and Dry Casting Fees. Field Day Fees:- $7 for an individual, $9 for families. families. Field Day Boundaries Dry Casting Fees:- $6 for an individual, $8 for Club Competition Rules says The boundaries for the Field Day will be published in Reel Talk. Boundaries may be changed at the sign on at the discretion of the Field Day Officer and by consensus of the majority of the participating members. Any competitor fishing outside the boundaries during the fishing times shall be disqualified. This has generally been accepted to mean that the boundaries may be changed if weather or weed or beach or water conditions mean that it would be difficult to find enough fishing spots within the advertised boundaries, and an extension would allow fishing in some places with better conditions. It does NOT mean that the boundaries can be extended because someone has a favourite spot outside the boundaries, or has heard of fish being caught outside the boundaries. In future, the boundaries will be discussed and set at or before the April General Meeting when the venues are being chosen, and everyone will have a chance to say what they want. Dry Casting Report, 2 May Well, here we are at the start of a new competition year and the first point of business is a public inquiry. Who is responsible for upsetting the wind gods yet again? Not only did they just upset them, they must have p*#$@#* d then off real good. The wind blew, no it didn t blow, it HOWLED into our faces at a huge rate of knots. Oh to have that wind from behind us. How many new state or national records could we set. The introduction of an extra couple of casts to the new competition season must have been a very attractive feature as twenty eight (28) people turned up to start the year off. Maybe it was starting that half an hour later that also contributed. Anyway, twelve seniors, nine veterans, four ladies and two juniors thought it was a good day for competition and another member thought it was such a great day, he came along to just help out. The help was very much appreciated thanks Dean. The old timers (that includes you George) had first go at the distance and the most competition was from the wind. The longest cast in 112 gram going to Hendo with a distance of 132 metres, marginally down on his average. Tony D Alonzo just pipped Bob in the 56 gram by a solitary metre at 108 metres. In the extra section of Art Bait, Hendo was seven metres better than the rest and the only one to reach 100 metres (exactly). Meanwhile the seniors were trying their best at accuracy and getting a little entertainment from newcomer Ric Hirayama trying to compete with the wind and distance with a light plug rod. Shorter distances were good, longer distances had buckleys. In amongst this Gilders kept up his average and pumped out a respectable 147 points in very adverse conditions. With the competitions reversed, Joe commenced to put the wind back in its place a bit with two excellent casts in 112 gram in excess of 150 metres, the longer being 158 metres. Not to be outdone, the wind then promptly took control and knocked his 56 gram distances back to his best of 113 metres. Hey Joe, you gotta learn to drop that elevation down when chucking into the wind. Personally, I tried a new rod for the 112 and just couldn t get it to load up, however, went back to my standard 56 gram beast, put an extra long drop out, and proceeded to throw my 2 ounces as far as my 4 ounces. Managed to reach 135 metres into the wind, some 19 metres longer than the next best. The message here gentlemen simply is: Strong headwinds = punch it low = longer distances!! Try it sometime. June dry casting will include 112 gram open. With the end of the designated office-bearing year just around the corner, it is time to consider who will be next year s dry casting officer. Who will be responsible for setting up the courts each month? I for one am very disillusioned with the lack assistance being extended to Bob and Terry with the removal of the courts after casting. Only one or two people help out, and then spasmodically. Due to matters of a personal nature, I will not be actively participating in Club activities (apart from dry casting and a field day or two if possible) for the balance of the year. I wish the incoming incumbent the best of luck. TT2 DCO. 12 Dry Casting Sausage Sizzle. We usually hold a sausage sizzle on every Sunday after the dry casting. Gives everyone a chance to talk over the morning s casting, gear to use, what s coming up, fishing, the state of the world or whatever, over some lunch. But the sausage sizzle is not free, much as we would like it to be. It has to be paid for somehow, and the prices are quite reasonable compared to what you would pay elsewhere. Don t forget to put the money in, please. Everything is one dollar each. You can get:- 1 drink plus 1 sausage in bread for$2.00 Extra drink for $1.00 Extra sausage in bread for $1.00 Do You Have Receipts from 2001/2002? At the April General Meeting, Terry Fuller reported on the police investigation into money allegedly missing from the club s bank account during a previous treasurer s control, and after all the club s financial and Kalbarri records for 2000/2001 and 2001/2002 were allegedly stolen from the Treasurer. Only the 2001/2002 financial year accounts could be reconstructed because some records were available for that year. Reconstructing the 2000/2001 accounts would have been a much more difficult job because no records were available. The former Treasurer has been interviewed by the Warwick Police and denies that any money is missing. He claims to have warned that committee that the club was spending too much money. The police have some difficulty in proving that some particular amounts of cash money were handed to and remained under the sole control of the former Treasurer but were not banked. Police action would be helped considerably if members can provide any written receipts signed by the former Treasurer for the 2001/2002 financial year. Please check your records and contact Secretary Terry Fuller if you have any receipts from the 2001/2 financial year SCAC Dinner/Presentation of Trophies. The nominations received by the Club indicate that the preferred location for our Dinner/Presentation of Trophies is the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club on a Saturday night. The committee has booked the centre for Saturday 19 June Discussions have been carried out with the catering department, and a carvery buffet organised. I can assure you that you will receive a generous meal. ORGANISE YOUR PARTY NOW. GET YOUR GROUP TOGETHER and OBTAIN YOUR TICKETS A.S.A.P. GUARANTEED GOOD FOOD, GREAT COMPANY, ENJOYABLE EVENING Cost New Committee Members. $40 per head. Contact Bob Henderson - contact details in front of Reel Talk. Some committee members may not be standing for the jobs they have done this year 2003/4, so replacements may be needed. Please consider standing for Committee. You will find the work interesting and it will help you to be part of the club and get more out of being a club member. Remember you get out what you put in. The responsibilities of all committee positions have been listed, so you can easily find out what s involved in any job. Contact the Secretary or any committee member for more details. Most importantly, if there aren t enough workers, the workers we do have will get burnt out and will not be able to carry on, so there ll HAVE to be new people, or... If there is no one prepared to do the work to run some activity, one option is to cancel the activity. Imagine if we said there s no dry casting officer, so all dry casting is cancelled or there s no field day officer, so all field days are cancelled or there won t be any more Reel Talks or there s no Social organiser, so no Trophies, Presentation Night or Dinner, and no food or drinks or raffle at the General Meetings there s no President, or Secretary or Treasurer, or... so the club will have to be wound up, dissolved, cancelled, gone, ended, no more... Annual General Meeting The club s Annual General Meeting and election of the new committee for 2004/5 will be held on 14 July Reel Talk June 2004 Page 12

13 Roy s Kalbarri Report. Have just spent a most enjoyable week in our accommodation at Kalbarri, relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet of the country side. The fishing from the shore was dismal to say the least. High tide was in the mornings between am and mid-day throughout my stay with low tides at dawn and dusk. Needless to say I missed the dawn casting, opting to lie in instead. Tried the high tides with Scoobs and home made poppers, but the only reaction was a rise to my trusty home made job when I was at the Red Bluff rocks. Unfortunately there was no connection between fish and hook. But fear not, my very good Rhodesian pal, Laurie Malton came to my rescue. Laurie is the President of the Kalbarri Fishing Club and also owns and runs Murchison Boat Hire. There are several of his brochures in the accommodation for those members who go there. On the Tuesday, Laurie took me out in the 5.3m boat, to trawl for a mackerel. We headed for the sand patch, north of Kal. Going was good although there was a 2m swell running. At least there was no wind to speak of. We were each trawling Rapala lures, plus Laurie had a gardie way out the back, splashing on the surface. On the second pass, my rod went off with a scream. 200m pealed off in double quick time. Laurie pulled his Rapala in then started to retrieve the gardie. Then the fun started, because as Laurie started to recover the sunken gardie, he got a massive hit and was on. Luckily we were fishing either side of the boat so there was no cross overs to worry about. Laurie soon had his 12kg mack gaffed and boated, while my fish continued with strong runs. Some 15 minutes after taking the lure, the fish was close enough to identify. It was a Samson fish. It pulled the scale down to 17kg. Although I had a good fish, the elusive mackerel had still eluded me. Nothing further happened so we headed home at 11am. Incidentally, I should mention that the Samson fish really mangled the two treble hooks on the lure, and both hooks had to be replaced. Then Laurie said he was determined that I get a mackerel this trip, and said we would go again on Thursday, as the sea would be better then, and would turn bad on Friday. On the Wednesday, a client hired the 5.3m boat, so that left us with only a 4.3m dingy. Maybe it is called a dingy, but to me it is as good as the Queen Mary, as I have had many a trip out in it. Came Thursday morning, we headed out bound for the sand patch. Just past Frustration, there was one hell of a bang on the hull and then on the motor. Immediate stop and check to ascertain there was no damage, but behind us I could see a floating log of wood. Off we went again. Shortly after starting the trawl, Laurie s rod screamed but he told me to take it up. BINGO, I had my first legitimate mackerel. It scaled out at 8.5kg. Second pass brought nothing so we changed my rod to a deep diving Rapala, running about 8 to 9m. After another pass, we were debating whether to change the lure again when my rod screamed. This time it was a 7kg mack and I had my bag limit. So we headed home. Enroute we saw a shoal of tuna so put the trawls out again for a couple of passes. No luck with a tuna, but the lines got a bit tangled. Laurie pulled his in first as it was closest then as he freed it, I felt I had a fish attached to my lure. Indeed it was a fish - a N.W.Blowie, curse it s hide. Anyway, it went back after a battle to get the hook out, which resulted in the fishing losing a tooth in the bargain. I said earlier that I had caught my first legitimate mackerel. Briefly, I caught my first mack when at Broome with Hendo, fishing on the Broome Jetty. I hooked this 18 inch mack through the tail, just where the tail begins. Naturally with a foul hooked fish, it seemed much bigger hauling in, and there were quite a few spectators peering over the edge of the jetty to see the capture. As the fish came up tail first, someone said "I ve never seen a fish caught like that before!" Then some other bright spark said "He must be a bum fisherman!!!!!" Well, that s my story. If anyone is interested, check out Laurie s website - You will see some great photos too. Tight lines, Roy. Ah Rats During my junior years I had the opportunity to have access to ALL of the Freo wharf (both north & south sides), because my Dad was a "lumper" who did shift work. On many a Friday night I was allowed to go to work with him so it was a quick rush home from school, load up my fishing tackle, grab some tea & a drink & Reel Talk June 2004 Page 13

14 head for whatever part of the wharf that Dad had been rostered. Under strict orders to never venture under the wharf I was assigned to the floating landing platforms used as dropoff points for the workers. Being a bit on the short side my Dad use to tether me via a harness that only allowed me to go so close to the edge & not fall in but able to land any fish. Every now & then I would collect a thick ear when caught without that bloody rope around me, but being an adventurous sort of lad the urge to venture into restricted areas became a challenge too good to miss. What hidden treasures where under there, was there any old bottles, coins or booty to be collected?. It had to be checked out.. The sun had gone down, my damp hessian bag held a few tailor, herring & slimy mackerel which were stowed in the boot of Dad s car. The tea break was over & I had promised my Dad I was only gunna hang around till I went to sleep on the back seat, BUT...with torch in hand I slowly ventured down into the underbelly of the wharf. Head down bum up I was soon into the backblocks of the wharf. On hands & knees I was crawling along a narrow plank close to the water s edge. Dark as a draught horses bum I was suddenly confronted by a gigantic apparition that had "DEATH all over its ugly mug. A body as big as a dog a bloody huge head with fangs that flashed in my torch beam sent fear trembling thru my body. Those humungas whiskers were so long "IT" used them to balance that ugly head..gawd... I was about to die... Cant go back Cant go forward...the cold dark depths below me... THE MONSTER moved towards me...me daks start to fill...fear has gripped my voice box...petrification sets in...me knees are wet??? somewhere in the back of my mind a squeaky voice prays "HELP DAD"... "IT" takes another step towards me...rattling sounds verberate thru the plank due to my vice like grip on it...fear tremors rattle the air about me... THWACK" came the noise...,"splat did that huge ugly head go, SPOOLOOSH" did that body go as it hit the water. A LIGHT FLASHES a voice called out "GOT THE BUGGER - fear factor goes into overdrive cos now I was gunna get killed. "WOCHA DOOIN JUNYA" was the call from the darkness. The deep voice was full of menace, me brain wasn t working, me jaw kinda moved and squeaky voice emitted a NUFFIN". "YA KOOD GET LOST UNDA ERE" was the reply. Now there comes a time in one s life where you just cant explain what, why or how it happens...i took off outa there like a rat outa a drain pipe & in 7 seconds flat I was topside running for my Dad. Spluttering and shaking like jelly I some how blurted out my story & looked for some sympathy to calm my shafted nerves. I forgot to duck & collected a fair clip under the ear then a stern tongue lashing and the humiliation and the laughter from his fellow workers. Yer see, many a "vagrant" lived under the wharf & there was many a tale of nasty things happening (mainly rumours). They were known to scavenge old bottles, pick up the odd coin or two, knock off the rats for food, collect mussels to sell etc etc...they were renowned for their prowess with the old shanghais (ging/slingshots). It took a couple of years before I ventured under that wharf again but I had a couple of mates with me next time You wouldn t believe me if I told you that under the Freo wharf live the biggest of bream because they cant be touched by recreational fishermen. Its the only place where cobbler still habitate. The mussels are huge. untouched for the past 10 to 12 years. OOHARR..I can feel a fishin sortie starting to eventuate...
