Major Win for Cepta at the Captain s Prize to the Ladies Captain Mo Lennon s Prize to the Ladies was played on Sunday 14 May and was the first Major competition for Ladies this year. The weather was mixed but none the less there was a good turnout and the beautiful array of jewellery on the prize table made it all to play for. Congratulations to Cepta Burke (playing off 31) who had a great score of 71 nett to win first prize, second prize went to Angela O Shea playing off 19 with a score of 72 nett and 3 rd prize went to Kaz Delaney playing off 3 with a score of 73 nett. Congrats also to the other prize winners Patsy Duggan, Dolores Hegarty, Bernie Cox, Jeannette Fitzgerald, Helena Burke, Pat McArdle & Davina Gilbert. The 9-hole prize winner was Anne Byrne and the Get into Golf winner Niamh Nolan. Cepta pictured receiving her prize from Captain Mo Lennon all the prize winners. A cheese and wine reception was held on the night and Captain Mo made a great speech and thanked everyone who helped in making the day so successful. The Captain then presented the prizes to Cepta proved a very popular winner and this was evident from the massive cheer that could be heard when her named was announced, Mo then presented her with a beautiful piece of jewellery. 9 Get into Golf Ladies Programme 2017 Another very successful Get into Golf Ladies Programme was completed last Tuesday with a celebration and presentation of certificates in the Club. A great evening was had by all. 25 ladies participated in the programme which ran over seven weeks with 4 golf lessons and 3 course practices. The ladies really appreciated the thorough grounding given to them by Andy Gilbert our Professional and to the club lady members who assisted with the course practices. A huge thanks to Margaret Costello for organizing and running the programme, to Marese and Liz, the group leaders and to all the club lady members who gave so generously of their time. We anticipate welcoming many of the ladies who participated in the programme to the club as full members soon. Carlow Rose Selection Well done to our very own rose Becki Lennon who represented the Golf club, but more importantly herself and her family with great distinction at the recent Carlow Rose event. She looked stunning on the night and we are all very proud of her. She wasn t the only member of staff on show on the night Graigues answer to 007 was the murmur in the crowd on the night..malone s the name, Jamie Malone. Who cut a dash as an escort on the night. Well done to both Deerpark Diary: Page 9 of 13
Intermediate Scratch Cup Congratulations to Edward Ned Kelly who won the recent Intermediate Scratch Cup. This competition has a great history and boasts two Crystal Trophies which is unusual. The reason for two trophies is that the original was stolen a number of years ago and a replacement was purchased, the original showed up years later after been found by a farmer in a ditch however the lid was never recovered. It is the biggest piece of crystal in the club and can be viewed in the cabinet in the bar. Played in glorious early summer conditions on Sunday 6 th May and the course playing hard and fast, Ned shot a terrific 66 nett (76 gross) playing of 10 to deservedly win both the Captain Mo Lennon, Ned Kelly & David Farrell, Chairman Intermediate Scratch Cup nett and gross competition with James Brogan, Michael A Dowling, Thomas Rea and Francis Fitzpatrick all finishing 3 shots back on 69 as his nearest challengers. Well done Ned on super round of golf. Match Play Competitions Entry sheets for the following Club Matchplay Competitions have been posted on the club notice board. The Club Championships The Brown Cup The Haughton & Anderson The Nationalist Braun Cup - Mixed Matchplay Closing date for entries is Sunday 11th June Please poste entry fees in the entry box beside the bar door in the hallway. Matchplay competitions are pre pay, no pay no play. Entry criteria and conditions are posted on each entry sheet. Deerpark Diary: Page 10 of 13
Eoin O Mahony Memorial The 15 th annual Eoin O Mahony memorial event was held on recently over the Deerpark course. Over 90 golfers played in total, many of which have played every year since the event s inception in memory of Eoin. In windy conditions Paul Bulfin set the early pace with a brilliant 68 gross (40 points). One by one, a number of the pre-tournament favorites fell just short of the mark and Paul s score failed to be beaten. Paul has represented Carlow golf club at Senior cup and Barton shield level for many years and has won numerous events but was delighted to finally get his name on the cup having known Eoin so well from his junior days. Runner up for the second year running was the ever steady Davy Byrne on 38 points. Davy won the event in 2013 and it s great to see him back playing well again. Former Barton cup star and golfer of the year John Barry was 3 rd on 37 points and is surely destined to get his name on the cup one of these days. Rosemary Tully and former winner Lisa Moore also finished 4 th and 5 th on 37 points both playing excellent golf. It was great to see a number of juniors making their debut on the day with young Sam McHugh winning the 9 hole on 17 points and Eoin s son Dylan winning the 18 hole event. John and Conor Heffernan who are grandsons of Pat Mullarkey also enjoyed their first competitive outing and will no doubt feature in years to come. Best gross was won by former assistant professional Peter Jones who also broke par with 37 points. Peter has confirmed this is something he does regularly and it s really nothing to get excited about!! Tony O Shea won the 9 hole event with an excellent 21 points, while Ollie Healy won the veteran s prize (33) and Aidan Lyons (Bunclody) winning best visitor (34). The Yellow Ball fun team event was won by Daragh Murphy and the Bulfin brothers, Brian and Paul on 39 points. A great night was had in the clubhouse afterwards and Paul is pictured receiving the Cup from Breda O Mahony. Deerpark Diary: Page 11 of 13
Course Looking after our course is vitally important. Take a bag of sand when heading out on the course and fill in the divots. Replace your divots and pitch marks. Do not throw away empty bottles our wrappers on the course. Rake bunkers after you have been in them we have invested in our bunker refurbishment programme and its in all of our interests to keep them in tip top shape Carlow Golf Club Dress Code The club has a definite Dress Code both on and off the course. Pictures of the suggested attire are around the clubhouse and at the first tee. Try and dress like the Professionals and you can t go wrong. On the Course: Golf shoes must be worn. Singlets are not permitted. Denim jeans are not permitted. Attire such as football, soccer or rugby shirts, hoodies and tracksuits are not permitted. Only tailored shorts, together with sports socks are permitted. Trouser legs should not be tucked into socks. Mobile phones should not be used on the course (except in the case of emergencies). In the Clubhouse: Golf shoes, sports caps and tracksuits are not permitted. Dress should be neat and tidy, in keeping with the high standards of the club; Denim jeans are permitted. Mobile phones may be used but please do so in a discreet and respectful manner. Deerpark Diary: Page 12 of 13
Rules Corner Tee Shot You may change your ball before playing your tee shot, but it is good practice to advise a player in your group if you are changing your ball. Play your tee shot from between, and not in front of, the tee-markers. You may play your tee shot from up to two club-lengths behind the front line of the tee-markers. If you play your tee shot from outside this area: in match play there is no penalty, but your opponent may require you to replay your stroke provided he does so immediately; in stroke play you incur a two-stroke penalty, the stroke itself does not count and you must play a ball from within the correct area. Attention fellow Members! The Deerpark Diary is written by the members for the members and we would really welcome your contributions. If you don t tell us about it then we can t report it. So send us your news, match reports, funny or bizarre golf stories, photos and snippets and we ll include them in next month s edition. If you have anything to contribute you can us at Newsletter@carlowgolfclub.ie. The Eds Margaret, Liz & Brendan. Deerpark Diary: Page 13 of 13
