1 r Deerpark Diary Carlow Golf Club s Monthly Newsletter Issue 6 Sep 2017 Lady Captains Prize In this issue Lady Captains Review The Road to Malone Andrew Gilbert Day Borris Trophy Carlow Seniors Juvenile Golf Dress Code & Rules Corner Dolores Lacey, winner, receiving her prize from Captain Marie Olwill The Lady Captains Prize is always anticipated with great excitement and is the biggest event in the ladies golfing calendar and this year it was certainly no exception. On Tuesday 15 th of August there was a tremendous turnout of 78 ladies playing on the first day of this two day event. Lady Captain Marie couldn t have asked for better! The weather was good to us and the course was in pristine condition, with manicured greens, perfect fairways and of course our splendid recently refurbished bunkers! By the end of the day Ann-Maria Kelly was leading with a terrific score of 71, but close on her heels was Mary Farrell with 72 and Margaret Stacey with 73! The second day to be played on Sunday 20 th was set to be a cracker! The ladies who went out on Sunday morning escaped with only a hint of rain, but in the afternoon the relentless downpours came in torrents! Deerpark Diary: Page 1 of 14

2 There was no let up! So heavy in fact was the rain that the 16 th green was completely awash! But nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of those 50 ladies determined to compete no matter what the weather! It was a fine tribute to Lady Captain Marie! The overall winner was Dolores Lacey with a fantastic score of 149 with Margaret Stacey only one shot behind on 150 and Kaz Delaney, Theresa Sheehan and Ann-Maria Kelly all on 151! What an amazing achievement for Dolores who had only recently overcome a serious wrist injury! In addition to the two 18 hole rounds, there were 9 hole competitions on both days, new members competitions and Get into Golf competitions all of which were all very well supported. When the competition finished Lady Captain Marie could relax and enjoy the company of members of her The Lady Captains Prize 2017 Prize Winners family, friends and the ladies committee over a delicious lunch! This was followed by a wine reception for all the lady members prior to the presentation of prizes. In her exceptional speech, written in verse, Lady Captain Marie congratulated Dolores on her superb win. She congratulated all the players who were placed over the two days and everyone who competed despite the weather! She thanked her Vice-Captain Bernie for her constant support during the year and her committee for all their hard work. She paid tribute to Captain Mo Lennon for his friendship and support and of course she thanked the bar, office, catering and greens staff. She thanked the many others who had put so much time into making the two-day event so successful. She made special mention of her family who had supported her throughout the year and for being with her on her special day! At the end of her fantastic speech Captain Marie got a standing ovation. 4 The Road to Malone Strike the pose! Carlow s victorious team celebrate with a selfie after their superb win over Kilkenny The Final push to Malone Wind and rain could not deter Carlow Ladies Senior Foursomes team who teed it up in Tramore Golf Club on Saturday 2 September in the AIG Ladies Cup and Shields District Finals. The team consisted of Karen Delaney & Bernie Cox, Helena Burke & Madeleine Brennan, Leigh Bolger & Dolores Lacey. Subs on the day were Carmel Roche and Marese Grogan - Theresa Sheehan who is also on the team was on holidays at the time of the match. The Leading pair Karen and Bernie lead from the front and finishing in style on the 18th green, where Bernie stitched the final chip to win 2up. Second pair out were Helena and Madeleine who lost their match to a pair that hit great form finishing on the 15th with a hole in one by Jan Browne. Leigh and Dolores secured their win and outright win for Carlow on the 16th green where Dolores hit the flag with her final chip. 5 Well done to the team and the overall foursomes manager Bernie Cox. The ladies now head off to Malone Golf Club in Belfast for the All Ireland Finals on Wednesday, 27th - 30th September. Good luck to all involved. The Ladies Committee secured sponsorship for our competition on Saturday 16th and Tuesday 19th September Team of two (semi open). And the proceeds from this competition will go towards offsetting the cost of the Ladies Senior Foursomes team practice sessions. We wish to thank all our sponsors for the continued support of the ladies club. The victorious team headed back to Carlow Golf Club to continue the celebrations and a lot of people wanted to get some pics with the winning team. Even Kilkenny hurling great James Cha Fitzparick, who happened to be playing in the Midland Scratch Cup that day got in on the act and got his photo taken with Kaz Delaney Sharon Brennan, Maggie Ruth, Theresa Sheehan and Aine O Shea raise a toast during the fundraising tournament held on Tuesday Deerpark Diary: Page 5 of 14

6 Andrew Gilbert Day As we all know Andrew Gilbert PGA Professional will retire from Carlow GC later this year after serving our club for 40 years. The inaugural Andrew Gilbert Trophy for Men and the Andrew Gilbert Plate for Ladies was played on the 1 st September to honour Andrew for his fantastic service to Carlow Golf Club over the years. A terrific days golf was had by everyone followed by a gorgeous Gala Dinner that evening where many members both past and present turned up to honour him. We won t say good bye just yet as Andy will still be on the premises for another few months yet. 10 Winners of the Borris Award Cup 2017 Margaret Stacey, Agnes O Neill, Mary O Connell, Ann Doyle (Player and Team Manager), Mary Hughes (Teams Manger) Bernie Deegan and Miriam Byrne, The Borris Award Cup competition started for the first time in 2016 for mid handicapper s and was won by the Carlow ladies last year and again this year. This year six clubs took part in the competition, Callen, Courtown, Woodenbridge (runners up) Enniscorthy, Borris and Carlow. Well Done Ladies. Boston Putter back in Carlow hands Every year Carlow Seniors club go head to head with The Grange GC in a Ryder Cup format event for the Boston Putter. This is always a great event played in great spirit. Carlow emerged victorious this year away from home with Peter Bowden and Jim Ryan having the best Carlow Score. 11 Juvenile Girl Golfers Over the summer months, Sean the assistant professional gave golf lessons to the juvenile girls and was assisted by Claire Byrne the juvenile girl s convenor and Mary Lennon. Sean said the progress made by the girls over the weeks was incredible and that he was very proud of them all. At the end of the lessons, Sean held a competition called Sean s professional prize. Sean said on the day there was some great scores but the important thing was that all the girls played their best and had fun. Claire would to thank all who helped and gave their time with the juvenile girls over the summer months. Congrats to Emer Malone who claimed 1 st place in Sean s professional prize. 12 Irish Kids Golf Tour Event Its not only the Juvenile girls making waves in Carlow Golf Club Congratulations to Sam McHugh who recently finished 3rd in the 9 year old section of the Irish Kids golf tour event in Headford golf club. It was played on 18th August and he shot a great score of 38 for the 9 hole competition. He practiced hard for the event and was delighted to play so well on the day! As with Emer Malone, Sam has a great coach and mentor in his father John McHugh. Well done Sam the future is looking bright Rules Corner Loose Impediments You may move a loose impediment (i.e. natural loose objects such as stones, detached leaves and twigs) unless the loose impediment and your ball are in the same hazard (i.e. bunker or water hazard check local rule for bunkers). If you remove a loose impediment and this causes your ball to move, the ball must be replaced and (unless your ball was on the putting green) you incur a one-stroke penalty. 13 Course Looking after our course is vitally important. Take a bag of sand on the first tee when heading out on the course and fill in the divots. Replace your divots and pitch marks. Do not throw away empty bottles our wrappers on the course. Rake bunkers after you have been in them we have invested in our bunker refurbishment programme and its in all of our interests to keep them in tip top shape Carlow Golf Club Dress Code The club has a definite Dress Code both on and off the course. Pictures of the suggested attire are around the clubhouse and at the first tee. Try and dress like the Professionals and you can t go wrong. On the Course: Golf shoes must be worn. Singlets are not permitted. Denim jeans are not permitted. Attire such as football, soccer or rugby shirts, hoodies and tracksuits are not permitted. Only tailored shorts, together with sports socks are permitted. Trouser legs should not be tucked into socks. Mobile phones should not be used on the course (except in the case of emergencies). In the Clubhouse: Golf shoes, sports caps and tracksuits are not permitted. Dress should be neat and tidy, in keeping with the high standards of the club; Denim jeans are permitted. Mobile phones may be used but please do so in a discreet and respectful manner. Deerpark Diary: Page 13 of 14
