Thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, the tournament netted $60,000 in support of education in Ireland, North and South. The Irish American Partnership would like to extend its gratitude to Tournament Co-Chairmen Aidan Browne and Patrick Sarkis for their tireless efforts in promotion of this event and to the entire committee for their help. The tournament would not have been as great of a success without them. Partnership President Joe Leary addresses the audience following the dinner reception After dinner, the co-chairs presented the tournament sponsors with pin flags and announced the prize winners. Congratulations to the low net winners from Professional Electric Contractors of Connecticut, Inc.: Jim Bisson, James Koloski, Todd Larson, and Paul Mustone. As a result of the tournament, rural primary schools in Ireland, North and South, will receive direct grants, helping them purchase library books and science teaching materials. This would not be possible without your generous support. We hope to see everyone next year at Newport Country Club for the 26th Annual Newport Golf Tournament! 7 The Irish American Partnership Supporting Education in Ireland, North & South The Irish American Partnership works to empower the next generation of Irish leaders by supporting educational initiatives and community development programs. Our major projects are detailed below. Direct Grants to Primary Schools Ireland s education system has greatly suffered from budget cuts, forcing schools to increase class sizes, cut teachers, and make do with their existing resources. The Partnership provides small grants of $1,500-$5,000 directly to schools to help them build their libraries and buy science materials. For particularly disadvantaged schools, these grants are repeated annually. In the predominantly small, rural schools that these funds go to, a little money goes an incredibly long way. University Access Scholarships The Partnership funds Access Scholarship Programs at four universities in Ireland: Trinity College, Dublin City University, University of Limerick, and University of Ulster. Access scholarships target student populations that may not be able to attend college without financial support, allowing equal opportunity for all Irish students to have a college education. They also provide vital counseling services and tutoring to help students acclimate once they get to school. This has proven so successful that, at DCU, access graduation rates are significantly higher than non-access! Science Teaching Programs Royal Dublin Society (RDS) Primary Science Fair For the past three years, the Partnership has been working with the RDS, Ireland s oldest philanthropic organization, to develop key competencies in the primary school science curriculum through primary science fairs. These are non-competitive events where classes of students present a scientific investigation they have performed. To accommodate the immense level of interest in the original Dublin fairs, the RDS and the Partnership are working to regionalize the model. Last year, the Partnership co-sponsored the first Limerick Fair with 60 schools and nearly 2,000 students in attendance. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) The Partnership identified a lack of confidence and understanding in the primary science curriculum and sought to correct this by creating science teacher training across the country. Partnering with St. Patrick s College and Mary Immaculate College, we have brought CPD in science teaching to schools in Mayo, Kilkenny, Kerry, Galway, and the Munster area. Employment Learning To address its high unemployment rate and increasingly service-based economy, Ireland needs a job training program for the 21st century. This is why the Partnership funds programs such as Fastrack to IT (FIT). FIT provides employment learning for unemployed people looking for work in the tech sector. Rather than training people only for the top level positions, FIT provides training for stable, middle level employment, giving companies people with the skills they need while employing thousands who would otherwise be out of work.
