1 Through the Green DAVID S. ISHII FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO. April 20 wwww/davidsishiifoundation.org Aloha Annie! can t believe she s retiring already! mused David Ishii, I echoing the reaction of legions of sports fans throughout Hawaii when they learned of Ann Miller s retirement from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser at the end of January. After all, we had come to rely on Annie s clear, professional and always memorable coverage of local sports over the past 34 years especially Wahine volleyball, basketball and tennis, and, of course, golf. Annie s writing always has a real human touch, David observes. When she arrived in Hawaii in 1980, Annie had no idea of what was in store for her, much less that her legacy would place her in the company of such revered golf writers as Bill Gee, Monte Ito and Bill Kwon. All Annie knew at the time was that she had sent out a bunch of job applications all over the country as she approached graduation from San Francisco State University with a dual major of P.E. and journalism. Then, while preparing for final exams, she received an offer from the Honolulu Advertiser for $475 a week. It sounded real good at the time, Annie recalls with a shrug and a smile. So, she gathered up her diploma in June, packed her bags, and arrived in the islands in July. Monte didn t like covering women s golf, just the men s, Annie explains. So, when I got here, I was given women s golf and covered the men when Monte couldn t. Annie had played a variety of sports growing up, focusing on softball in college. Ironically, in spite of her athletic background, she had never played golf. You can t write about it if you don t play it, Monte admonished her, so Annie took up the game (including some lessons from the legendary Jackie Pung). I played softball, so I knew I could hit the ball, Annie observes. My expectations weren t that high to begin with, so my baseball swing was good enough to get by. David was playing full-time in Japan when Annie started covering golf, so the two only got to know each other during David s limited Hawaii schedule at such tournaments as Kapalua, Sony (formerly Hawaiian) Open, JAL Open, and, of course, the Pearl Open, where Annie played in the pro-am each year and interviewed all of the players. And, as she often walked the course, she befriended Lorraine Ishii as they both followed David s progress from round to round. He s kind of a quiet guy likeable and easy to be around, Annie says of David. Usually, you think of likeable people as being somewhat gregarious, but he s pretty quiet. Not surprisingly, when it came time to establish the foundation, one of the first persons David and Lorraine talked to was Annie, who became an original board member and only female on the board besides Lorraine. She s such a good friend, Lorraine notes. Her love of the game, magic with words, and dedication to kids is perfect for our foundation and can she hit the ball! Happiness is hitting my drive farther than Annie s! Fortunately, for all of us who admire Annie s writing as well as her One of Annie s mementoes, this keychain commemorates David s 1986 victory at the prestigious Chunichi Crowns tournament with his winning score of David, Lorraine and Willow wish Annie well on her recent retirement. swing, she continues to cover golf for the Star Advertiser, including features for the paper s weekly Golf Page every Thursday. In her retirement, she is also working with UH Press and Dave Shoji on a book about the legendary Wahine volleyball coach. Continued on page 6

It was then that David turned to three prominent figures in the local golf industry Jay Hinazumi, Wendell Tom and Del Marc Fujita to serve as tournament co-chairs. Jay is President of Golf Concepts, Inc. (Hawaii representative of Nike Golf, EZ-Go golf carts, Golf Pride grips) and also serves as President of the Hawaii State Golf Association. Wendell owns Golf Center Hawaii, Inc. (Hawaii representative of TaylorMade-Adidas Golf and other products), and Del Marc heads Del-Marc Fujita Enterprises, LLC (Hawaii representative of Bridgestone Golf, Ogio, U.S. Kids Golf, ProActive Sports, Clicgear). Besides being representatives of major golf product lines, the three also hold other traits in common. All are good friends of David, and each enjoyed successful amateur golf careers extending from Junior Golf to college: Jay at UH-Manoa, Wendell and Del Marc at USC, L-R: Del Marc Fujita, Wendell Tom, Jay Hinazumi and David at last but decided to forgo pro year s tournament. careers. Each had a father who played a prominent role in their golfing careers, starting with David (Chica Ishii), Jay (Shigeru Hinazumi), Wendell (Bob Tom), and Del Marc (Art Fujita). All four men have given back to the game of golf much as their fathers had done for them. Of the four, David, Wendell and Jay are contemporaries, while Del Marc is younger. His father, Art, was a good amateur golfer from Kauai who is enshrined in the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame. When I was young, I played some tournaments with him, David says. Art is a smart, well-mannered gentleman sort of the opposite of Del Marc! The four have fun at their tournament planning meetings, David reports. We follow what Elton started and share ideas as to whether anything needs to be changed from previous years. The key is always getting the prizes, set-up, sponsors and filling entries if anyone drops out. Thanks to Elton, our main challenge is to maintain what s there and decide on how to tweak it here and there in order to keep it fresh and enjoyable for the participants. Mission of the David S. Ishii Foundation A non-profit corporation whose primary mission is to promote and advance the game of golf, and to educate the public as to its benefits to society. A Word About Our Newsletter Through the Green is the official newsletter of the David S. Ishii Foundation. The USGA defines the phrase through the green as the entire golf course, except for tees, greens and designated hazards. In tournament play, the phrase is used to mean that everything else is in play. Through the Green is the Foundation s way of saying to Hawaii s young golfers: pursue your goals, play it as it lies, and strive to be the best you can along the way...

(Photo, right.) Julia Kim of Kalani High School and Tresten Nakashima of Waimea High School each received $4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per year for four years) based on academic achievement, active participation on their high school golf teams, and full-time enrollment at an accredited U.S. college or university. Kim is attending Stevens Institute of Technology and Nakashima is enrolled at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. My Experience at the 2013 US Junior Amateur Championship By PJ Samiere Note: The David S. Ishii Foundation provides travel stipends for golfers attending the Boys U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championships. My participation in the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Martis Camp Resort in Truckee, Calif., was the highlight of my junior golfing career so far. This tournament was the most professional and well-organized sporting event I have ever been a part of. From the entrance gate of this exclusive resort to the staffguided tour during player registration, I was amazed at every turn and enjoyed every moment. Players were welcomed with an ipod Nano gift and introduced to the full Martis Camp VIP treatment. Players were allowed full access to the men s locker room and golf services, which included a private locker (with player s name) shoe and club repair and all the Haagen-Dazs ice cream one could eat. PJ and caddy Vince Ronzani. The high altitude mountain setting of this course was unique in several ways. The course conditions were incredible and almost seemed better than the courses I have seen on the PGA tour. The facilities were dreamlike from the multi-million dollar properties along the fairways to the clubhouse, which is the second largest in Northern California. Although the thin air at this altitude affected my lungs, it also gave the ball more hangtime making the 7,400-yard course play somewhat shorter. I played well throughout the tournament and could not really expect much more of myself. I made the cut and advanced all the way to the quarterfinals where I lost to the eventual tournament winner. Our match was close and the lead traded back and forth, but my opponent played well enough to collect six birdies during the match to edge me out at 3 and 2. Making the Round of 8 on the country s biggest golf stage was pleasing and to be featured on the Golf Channel was great. I was featured on live TV playing the uphill par four 16th hole where I was able to drive the green from 311 yards. Mark Rolfing was commentating and gave a nice narrative during video of me walking up the 16th fairway, mentioning the HSJGA hat that I wore and the Hawaii logo golf bag on my caddie. Mr. Rolfing s mention of the junior golf association in Hawaii made me more proud of where I was from than how far I had come. Of all the birdies and eagles I carded during play, this may have been the cherry on top moment of my entire journey. I was fortunate to have several things simply go my way in Truckee. We hadn t signed up for a caddie but arrived to a weather system of record high heat levels beating down on a very hilly and long course. After learning of the caddie shortage during registration, we came across a Martis Camp staff member who was happy to meet and talk with us. He happened to be a scratch golfer at this course and had hoped to caddie at this tournament. He was allowed to alter his work schedule to caddie for me, which eventually made a huge difference in my outcome. This chance happening reminded me to be open to others and always grateful for any help I receive along the way.

Ishii Foundation/HHSAA state golf championships held at the Kaanapali Golf Course on Maui by capturing girls and boys team and individual titles. On April 30 and May 1, -year-old Punahou freshman Mariel Galdiano, recorded two rounds under 70 to win the girls individual crown by seven strokes over Waiakea High School s Ciera Min. Galdiano s total was one shot shy of tying the state tournament record set by Stephanie Kono in Punahou also ran away with the team competition with a 17-stroke victory over second place Waiakea. A week later, on May 7-8, Punahou s Kalena Preus fired a final round 4-under-par 67 to claim the boys state championship by four shots over Moanalua s John Oda and five shots ahead of his Punahou teammate, PJ Samiere.
