1 Through the Green DAVID S. ISHII FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER ISSUE NO. 12 March 2013 wwww/davidsishiifoundation.org Mahalo elton! Anyone who s done it can tell you that the hardest part of any project is starting one from scratch. An artist, for example, begins with a blank canvas; a writer stares at an empty screen; a contractor surveys a vacant lot. Such was the challenge when the David S. Ishii Foundation was established over 13 years ago. The idea of starting the Foundation was hatched in 1998, the first year that the Hilo Invitational golf tournament was played after being inactive for several years. Elton Tanaka, then the district manager of Sears in Hawaii, was one of the key movers and shakers behind the Hilo revival. It was at that tournament that Elton and others learned that David was personally underwriting both boys and girls state golf championships since the Hawaii High School Athletics Association (HHSAA) transitioned from public to private funding in Elton became part of a core group of individuals that founded the DSIF in Along with people like Allan Ikawa and Warren Haruki, this group was particularly well suited for the task, David notes, combining business acumen with a love of golf. Individually, they played in a lot of fundraising tournaments across the state and had a good idea as to what worked and what didn t. But who would chair the event? Well, Elton never really had a choice, David recalls. Everybody just sort of looked at him and agreed he was it. Elected by unanimous resolution, Elton rolled up his sleeves and took the bull by the horns. He did an amazing job, David adds. Elton worked the phones hard, calling on his extensive network of friends many who owned their own businesses and were supportive of junior golf. Another challenge was that in order to raise the kind of funds necessary, the sponsorship fee was set at $1,000 per team, which was considered extremely high at the time. It took quite a bit of coaxing, Elton admits, but after much effort by all of the board members the first tournament held in 2000 was sold out and the DSIF was on its way. Some rules to running a successful tournament: 1) Give out good prizes. 2) Treat the people well. 3) Keep the program short. Elton Tanaka Over the years, the Foundation has stuck to the formula for success determined by Elton and the tournament committee: 1) Give out good prizes. 2) Treat the people well. 3) Keep the program short. Everyone enjoyed playing in the tournament, Elton notes. It quickly earned the reputation for being a classy tournament. I guess from the first time, the people had good fun, David adds. Right away a lot of them said, Put me down for next year! And, key sponsors have kept coming back and have continued to support the foundation over the years. So far, so good, David says. Elton announced his decision to step down from his Continued on page 2

Elton has children and now grandchildren on the mainland, David explains. He wants to spend more time with them, and because the tournament is traditionally held in June, he could not travel for half of each year. That s how much he was dedicated to the event. He s looking forward to spending more time with his family and having more freedom in general. Elton leaves the tournament in very good shape. It s no secret that many golf tournaments are having a hard time finding enough players. However, the DSIF tournament is sold out at the sponsors level only. There aren t too many tournaments that can claim so much support, David notes. We need to keep it going, keep it strong. After some discussion at this year s DSIF board meeting, no clear successor arose to fill Elton s shoes. It is testament to Elton s all-around hustle that, this year, the tournament chair s role is being divvied up amongst a group of capable people who will share the various hats that Elton wore. David, Jay Hinazumi, Wendell Tom, and Del-Marc Fujita will serve as co-chairs and try to cover whatever needs to be done, including prizes. Elton did all the prizes, too. A Word About Our Newsletter Through the Green is the official newsletter of the David S. Ishii Foundation. The USGA defines the phrase through the green as the entire golf course, except for tees, greens and designated hazards. In tournament play, the phrase is used to mean that everything else is in play. Through the Green is the Foundation s way of saying to Hawaii s young golfers: pursue your goals, play it as it lies, and strive to be the best you can along the way...

We ve also been fortunate to have lots of volunteers. We couldn t run the tournament without them, says David. However, getting the people to play is the key. Thanks to the hard work of people like Elton, Allan and Warren, we ve been very fortunate. With Elton s tenure as tournament chair now over, David reflects on the future. We re getting older and for some it s harder to play golf. That s the sad part. Some of my friends don t play anymore. We re all starting to get a little creaky. However, David takes great solace in the fact that Elton s hard work and his administrative skills have left the Foundation in good financial condition, assuring that the Foundation will be able to carry on its work in the future. Moreover, David is optimistic that younger players will follow the example set by the older folks and step up when their time comes. Rather than having to start from scratch, however, at least anyone looking to continue what folks like Elton have already accomplished will say, Now that s a very solid foundation to build on.
