2 Those were the days. of separation by color and ZERO contamination.

3 Let s Simplify Things When separation by color became challenging & keeping contaminants such as ceramics, etc. out of the glass became cumbersome, & adding other materials such as window glass, ceramics & porcelain became an option & the Canadian market for Green Glass nearly dried up..nrra worked with NHDES to come up with a better idea.

4 That idea became affectionately known as PGA..not the Golf Association but nearly as exciting! PGA is Processed Glass Aggregate

5 Life is good..

6 In 1999, NHDES deemed PGA as a Certified Waste Derived Product No. 11 Aggregate for Construction This product is approved for use in public works construction and other constructed systems including use as subbase material for roads, bedding material for pipes and fill around retaining walls and foundations.

7 PGA How do we get to a usable aggregate? 1) NRRA Members collect & store glass material and transport this to one of 5 NRRA PGA Host Sites 2) NRRA hires a Crusher to turn the glass material into a usable aggregate 3) NRRA Host Sites use crushed material, sell or give back this material to NRRA Members

11 The Numbers. In 2016, NRRA Members in NH, VT & MA recycled nearly 10 million pounds of glass! Of this 10 million pounds, 9,480,000 pounds became PGA & 520,000 pounds (or 5%) became new glass bottles. 2 communities still separate glass by color. Keene, NH separates clear & brown glass and Rye, NH separates clear, brown & green glass. Net Cost to Keene/Rye: $14/ton (includes transport)

12 NRRA Members save $Millions!!! October April ,144 tons of PGA was shipped to NRRA s Host cost to Members of $1,654,320 IF, this same tonnage was treated as $85/ton, the cost would have been $4,687,240!! SAVINGS of $3,032,920 by not landfilling, incinerating this valuable product! (or $55/ton!)

13 How can I save $5,800/year? NRRA Members produce 44 lbs. per person of PGA Materials every year For a Town with a population of 4,800, that s 211,200 pounds or 106 tons 106 tons x $85 as MSW = $9,010 in tip fees 106 tons x $30/ton as PGA = $3,180 in tip fees & material is made in to a usable product!

22 The Challenges USAGE need more municipalities & businesses to use PGA as road base; drainage as a crushed gravel substitute PGA Host Sites need more sites close to municipalities to cut down on transport costs and carbon footprint CONVERSION: 1.5 tons = 1 cubic yard
