The 2014 Champions Tour: This year marks the 35th anniversary of the PGA TOUR s Champions Tour, and the 14th annual SAS Championship is the 23rd of 26 official events on the 2014 schedule. The official season concludes with the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the Cochise Course at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., October 27-November 2. The Champions Tour s primary purpose is to provide significant competitive and earnings opportunities for players age 50 and older, to protect the integrity of the game and to help grow the reach of the game in the U.S. and around the world. Charles Schwab Cup: The Charles Schwab Cup is currently in its 14th year. The Charles Schwab Cup, designed to recognize the Champions Tour s leading player, is a season-long bonus-points competition. Players receive points for top-10 finishes at all 26 official events based on each week s money distribution, with $1,000 earned being the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point (points are doubled at the five major championships during the year as well as the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship where all 30 players earn double points). The program offers $2.1 million in taxdeferred annuity payouts to the five leading finishers, with the winner receiving a $1-million annuity. Kenny Perry won last year s Charles Schwab Cup when he finished 412 points better than Bernhard Langer. However, through the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, Langer is the current leader (3,624 points) followed by Colin Montgomerie (2,991 points and 633 points behind). Jay Haas is third (1,639) while Kenny Perry (1,495) and Jeff Sluman (1,545) round out the top five, respectively. With just four events remaining and 1,728 points available for winners of these four events, only Langer and Montgomerie are still eligible to win the Charles Schwab Cup. A total of 315 points go to this week s winner Recap: Russ Cochran birdied the final four holes to win his second SAS Championship in the last four years. Cochran trailed David Frost by as many as three shots late in the round, but his four straight

birdies to close the tournament allowed him to overtake Frost down the stretch. Playing one group ahead of Frost, Cochran tied him with a birdie at the 17 th hole and then he claimed the title by holing an eightfoot birdie putt on the last hole. For the week, Cochran was a cumulative 12-under-par on the back nine, making an eagle, 11 birdies and just one bogey. A QUICK LOOK AT THE 2014 CHAMPIONS TOUR This year marks the 35th anniversary of the PGA TOUR s Champions Tour and this is the 14 th year for the SAS Championship. It is the 23rd of 26 official events on the 2014 schedule. Here are some highlights from the current season: This year marks the 35th anniversary of the PGA TOUR s Champions Tour and this is the 11 th year for the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. It is the 22nd of 26 official events on the 2014 schedule. Here are some highlights from the current season: Bernhard Langer s win at the Dick s Sporting Goods Open was his fifth title of the 2014 season, matching his career-high in a single year. Langer won the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship giving him a victory in eight straight years on the Champions Tour. He followed up in May with his 20 th career victory at the Insperity Invitational, becoming the 10th player in Champions Tour history to reach the 20-win plateau in career victories. Langer s two biggest wins of the year came at the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS, defeating Jeff Sluman in a playoff. He then won the Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Wales by a Champions Tour record 13 strokes. Kevin Sutherland was 11 under for his first 11 holes on Saturday at the Dick s Sporting Goods Open and despite a bogey on the final hole, he posted a 59 at En-Joie Golf Club, the first sub-60 score ever shot in Champions Tour history. Fred Couples birdied three of the last four holes to win his second Toshiba Classic, the event s 20 th anniversary. Couples won again later in the year at the Shaw Charity Classic, shooting 61 in the final round and then outdueling Billy Andrade in a playoff for his 11th career title on the Champions Tour. Kenny Perry won his third consecutive major championship at the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek. Coupled with back-to-back major titles in 2012 at the Constellation Senior Players and U.S. Senior Open, Perry became the first player since Gary Player ( ), and only the second in Champions Tour history, to win three major titles in a row. He did not enter last year s Senior

British Open in England. Later in the season, Perry claimed his seventh career title at the 3M Championship, edging Bernhard Langer by a stroke. World Golf Hall of Fame member Colin Montgomerie ended an official victory drought on U.S. soil, claiming his first major championship at the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Montgomerie became just the third Scot to win the prestigious event and first since Jock Hutchinson in A month later, Colin Montgomerie claimed a second major title at the U.S. Senior Open, defeating Gene Sauers in a three-hole aggregate playoff. He became the first player since Roger Chapman to win multiple majors in a season and only the fifth player in Champions Tour history (Gary Player, Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus, Chapman) to claim both the Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open in the same season. D.A. Weibring made the first hole-in-one on the Champions Tour this year at the Toshiba Classic, making an ace of Newport Beach Country Club s 17 th hole during the second round. Jay Haas played all 54 holes of the Toshiba Classic without making a bogey, a first on the Champions Tour since John Cook went bogey-free at the 2013 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. Later in the year, both Bernhard Langer (Dick s Sporting Goods Open) and Fred Couples (Shaw Charity Classic) played an entire event without making a bogey and both players went on to win. Jeff Maggert became the 17 th player to win in his Champions Tour debut, claiming the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic presented by C-Spire. Maggert outduels Billy Andrade down the stretch for a two-stroke victory at Fallen Oak. Spain s Miguel Angel Jimenez followed Maggert, winning the Greater Gwinnett Championship in his first start on the Champions Tour. Jimenez edged Bernhard Langer by two strokes at TPC Sugarloaf. It marked the first time since the Champions Tour s inaugural year, 1980, that players making their debut claimed consecutive events. Trevor Dodd s ace on the 2 nd hole at TPC Sugarloaf marks the third consecutive event that a holein-one was made, a first on the Champions Tour since 2009 when at least one ace was made in three consecutive events -- John Cook, Regions Tradition (first round); Tim Simpson, Boeing Classic (first round); Allen Doyle, Nature Valley First Tee Open At Pebble Beach (third round), Jeff Sluman, Nature Valley First Tee Open At Pebble Beach (third round). New venue, new partner, no problem. Jeff Sluman teamed with Fred Funk to win the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf in the Ozarks. Last year, Sluman teamed with Brad Faxon to win the event in Savannah. Wes Short s dramatic birdie-birdie-eagle finish nips fellow rookie Scott Dunlap by a stroke at the Quebec Championship near Quebec City. Dunlap had won his first Champions Tour title two weeks prior at the Boeing Classic. Short becomes the first player since Bernhard Langer at the 2010 Allianz Championship to eagle the last hole for victory. John Cook became the 14 th different player to win a PGA TOUR and Champions Tour event at the same venue when he edged Tom Byrum by a stroke for the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach title. Cook won the first of his 11 PGA TOUR tournaments at the 1981 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am on

the Monterey Peninsula. SAS CHAMPIONSHIP STORYLINES: Rookies Making Their Mark: It s been the year of the rookie on the Champions Tour in 2014 as five rookies have won on the Champions Tour this year, including three of the last five tournaments. At the recent Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, five rookies finished among the top 10 on the final leaderboard and six rookies, led by Scott Dunlap (6 th -$1,018,526), are currently among the top 30 on the money list. Will a rookie win this year s SAS Championship? Last year, John Riegger s victory in Seattle, at the Boeing Classic, gave the Champions Tour five rookies winners in a year, tying the all-time mark for rookie winners in a season. Five different rookies won events in 1989, 1999 and A total of 10 rookies are entered in this year s SAS Championship and should Stephen Ames, Woody Austing, Lee Janzen, Kevin Sutherland, Billy Andrade, Jose Coceres, Marco Dawson or Doug Garwood win, they would join Dunlap, Jeff Maggert, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Wes Short, Jr. and Paul Goydos as a record sixth different rookie to triumph in a single season on the Champions Tour. Langer Back From Break, Gunning For Sixth Victory In 2014: Bernhard Langer will make his first appearance on the Champions Tour in over a month when he plays in this year s SAS Championship. A winner at Prestonwood in 2012, Langer is shooting for his sixth title of the season and fourth win in his last eight starts on the Champions Tour. The last Champions Tour player to win six times in a season was Larry Nelson in Here are some highlights from Langer s stellar 2014 season: Set a new Champions Tour mark when he rolls to a 13-stroke wire-to-wire victory at the Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Wales. He became just the third player to claim multiple majors in a season twice. Gary Player won multiple majors in both 1987 and 1988 while Jack Nicklaus won multiple majors in both the 1990 and 1991 seasons. His 13-stroke winning margin equals the secondlargest margin in any major championship. Tiger Woods won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes and Old Tom Morris won The Open Championship by 13 in Had 20 consecutive top-10 finishes on the Champions Tour dating back to last year and 21 straight including his T8 at The Masters Tournament in April before it ended at the recent Encompass Championship (T20). Earlier this year, ran off 22 consecutive sub-par rounds and 31 consecutive par/better rounds dating back to Those 31 par/better rounds tied him with Jeff Sluman for third place on the all-time list. Is the only player in 2014 with five wins, the sixth time in his Champions Tour career he has won multiple events in a season. Won the Insperity Invitational in May for his 20th career victory, becoming just the 10th player with 20 or more all-time victories on the Champions Tour. It was his third win in the event. Captured his 21st Champions Tour title at the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, his 22nd at the Senior Open Championship and his 23rd at the Dick s Sporting Goods Open where he played all 54 holes bogey-free. He is currently, T5 on the all-time victory list with Bob Charles. Was the only player on the Champions Tour to finish in the top 10 in all five major championships. Finished T8 at the Masters. Has finished in the top 3 in 52 of 144 career starts on the Champions Tour.

Currently leads the 2014 Champions Tour money list and Charles Schwab Cup points list. His singleseason earnings total of $2,704,014 are just $324,290 short of Hale Irwin s all-time record total of $3,028,304 established in In addition to his five victories this season, he has finished second four times and third twice. Leads in scoring average (67.98) and is first in top-10 finishes (15). With $2,704,014 in 2014 earnings, he s already surpassed his previous year s best -- $2,648,939 in Montgomerie, Perry Also Rested, Returning To Champions Tour: Like Bernhard Langer, World Golf Hall of Fame member Colin Montgomerie has not played a Champions Tour event in more than a month, last appearing at the Dick s Sporting Goods Open in mid-august. Montgomerie will return at the SAS Championship where he finished T18 last year. He stands second on the Charles Schwab Cup points list and hopes to cut into Bernhard Langer s sizeable lead with a victory this week. Earlier this year, Montgomerie won both the Senior PGA Championship and U.S Senior Open. Kenny Perry, another multiple winner on the Champions Tour this year with victories at the Regions Tradition and 3M Championship in his last start on the Champions Tour, has also not played in a tournament since the PGA Championship in early August. Perry makes his return at the site of his first career win on the Champions Tour at the 2011 SAS Championship and is shooting to equal his win total of a year ago when he tries for a third title in Exciting Finishes The Norm Lately On The Champions Tour: The last five Champions Tour events have been won either in a playoff or by a single stroke and three of the last five have been won with either birdie or eagle on the last hole. Scott Dunlap birdied the first playoff hole to edge Mark Brooks for the Boeing Classic title near Seattle. The following week at the Shaw Charity Classic, Fred Couples roared from back in the pack with a final-round 61 to tie BillyAndrade and then defeated him with a birdie on the first playoff hole. A week later at the Quebec Championship, Wes Short, Jr. s improbable birdie-birdieeagle finish allowed him to nip Dunlap for his first title on the Champions Tour. Faldo Again In SAS Championship Field: This year s SAS Championship will also include a rare appearance by another World Golf Hall of Famer as Sir Nick Faldo makes his second start in the event. Last year, Faldo made his first appearance on American soil on the Champions Tour, but he had to withdraw after 12 holes in the opening round with an elbow injury. Earlier this year, he finished T53 at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic and teamed with Eduardo Romero to finish T17 at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf. A nine-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including three wins each at the Masters and British Open. Cochran Set To Defend Title; Goes For Third SAS Win In Last Five Years: Russ Cochran s dramatic victory last year at the SAS Championship gave him multiple SAS titles and he and Bruce Lietzke ( ) are the only players to hold that distinction at Prestonwood Country Club. Cochran will defend a title for the fourth time on the Champions Tour. He was T14 at the 2011 Songdo IBD Championship in South Korea and was fourth at the 2011 SAS Championship. Cochran was also unable to defend his title at the 2012 Senior Open Championship due to injury and was forced to withdraw from this year s Principal Charity Classic after 36 holes due to injury. Kirk Triplett is the last player to defend a title on the Champions Tour, winning the 2012 and 2013 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. In his five previous appearances at Prestonwood, Cochran has a pair of victories and has only finished out of the top five once (16 th in 2012). In 15 rounds on the course, he s had just one score above par and a stroke average of His scoring average in the first round at this event is an amazing 65.60, starting with a 66 four times and a 64 in 2010 when he went on to victory! Returning To The Winner s Circle: There were 18 different winners last year on the Champions Tour and 10 of those champions are still searching for a victory in Among that group are four multiple winners

from a season ago including this week s defending champion, Russ Cochran. Others multiple winners in 2013 who are still hoping to notch a victory this year include: Rocco Mediate, David Frost, Mark Wiebe and Esteban Toledo. Brad Faxon, Khoki Idoki, Craig Stadler, Bart Bryant and John Riegger all won one tournament in 2013 and all are looking to pick up a victory before this season ends. A Strong Field on Tap: Below are some statistics on the 81 players who will be competing in the 2014 SAS Championship. 60 of the 81 players in the field have won a total of 433 PGA TOUR events 47 players have won 302 titles on the Champions Tour A total of 20 players have won major championships on the Champions Tour and 20 players own major victories on the Champions Tour 27 of the top-30 finishers on the 2013 money list are entered There are eight members of the World Golf Hall of Fame in the field. They are Nick Faldo, Hale Irwin, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Price, Curtis Strange, Larry Nelson, Bernhard Langer and Tom Kite. SAS CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES: Players Battling for Berths in Charles Schwab Cup Championship: With three full-field events remaining, there are a number of players battling for some of the remaining spots available for the season-ending championship at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. from Oct. 27-Nov. 2. Last year, the player who was 30 th after the last full-field event had earned $501,332 and two years ago, the player in the No. 30 spot had earned $516,169 heading into the season finale. So far, through 22 events, all of the top-30 players have surpassed that figure and Steve Pate s total at No. 30 is the highest since Brad Bryant finished 30 th in 2010 with $593,125. Below is a rundown on the players currently in positions Position Name 2013 Earnings 25 th Doug Garwood $611, th Woody Austin $611, th Jeff Maggert $608, th Mark Calcavecchia $591, th Esteban Toledo $580, th Steve Pate $554, st Rocco Mediate $542,053 (-$12,592) 32 nd Roger Chapman $517,334 (-$37,311) 33 rd Paul Goydos $500,838 (-$53,807) 34 th Joe Durant $491,965 (-$62,680) 35 th Bill Glasson $455,528 (-$99,117) Byrum Earns Berth With Top-10 Finish in California: Tom Byrum s second-place finish at the recent Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach was important for the 54-year-old Byrum. As a previous alternate into the SAS field, his top-10 finish earned him a spot in the tournament as the highest top-10 finisher not previously exempt. Byrum s performance at Pebble Beach also vaulted him up into 36 th position on the 2014 money list and put him in position to earn fully-exempt status on the 2015 Champions Tour should he continue to move up over the course of the remainder of the season. Last year, Doug Garwood earned a spot in the SAS Championship after finishing T2 at the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. Tournament Has North Carolina Flavor: This year s SAS Championship will certainly have its share of players with ties to the state, including several players who are natives of the state. That group includes Mike Goodes (Reidsville), Mark O Meara (Goldsboro), Scott Hoch (Raleigh), and Jim Thorpe (Roxboro). In addition several others attended college or currently reside there. The college products include: Billy

Andrade, Scott Hoch, Gary Hallberg, and Curtis Strange (all Wake Forest), and John Inman (UNC and its former coach). A Look At Prestonwood Country Club: Prestonwood Country Club ranked 20 th among the 26 courses on the 2013 Champions Tour with an average score of (-.869) compared to 17th among 24 courses on the 2012 Champions Tour, with an average score of (-.448). Hole No. 13, a par-4, ranked as the most- difficult in 2013, with an average score of (+.165), while No. 1 (4.143) and No. 10 (4.065) ranked as the second-hardest and third-hardest respectively. No. 17, a par-5, was again the easiest, with an average score of (-.705) and has now ranked as the third easiest hole on the Champions Tour in both 2012 and In 2012, the hole had a stroke average of (-.858). Winning In Their Debut: In the history of the Champions Tour there have only been 18 players who have won in their first starts on the circuit, but it s happened 10 times since the start of the 2000 campaign including twice in 2014 (Jeff Maggert/Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, Miguel Angel Jimenez/Greater Gwinnett Championship). The SAS Championship has the distinction of being the only non-major championship where that rare feat has happened more than once. In 2007, Mark Wiebe made his first start on the Champions Tour after receiving a sponsor exemption into the event and he defeated Dana Quigley by three strokes at Prestonwood for his first victory on Tour. In 2009, Tom Pernice, Jr. won his first Champions Tour event in his initial start, edging David Frost and Nick Price by one stroke. The only other championship where there have been multiple first-time winners in their Champions Tour debuts was at the Senior PGA Championship. In 1980, Arnold Palmer won in his first start at Turnberry Isle Country Club in North Miami, Fla. Michael Allen followed Palmer in 2009, winning the Senior PGA Championship at Canterbury Golf Club near Cleveland in his first appearance on the circuit. How the Leaders Have Fared: In the 13-year history of the SAS Championship, eight second-round leaders/co-leaders have gone on to win the event (Bruce Lietzke in 2001, Craig Stadler in 2004, Tom Jenkins in 2006, Mark Wiebe in 2007, Tom Pernice, Jr. in 2009, Kenny Perry in 2011 and Russ Cochran in 2013). First-round leaders/co-leaders have won this event six times in the previous 13 years at Prestonwood, including four of the last seven times in Cary. First-round leaders did not win in 2009, 2011 or Charting the Champs: The last six winners of the SAS Championship have made an average of 16.7 birdies over 54 holes and have averaged only 3.8 bogeys en route to victory. Hale Irwin (2005) and Kenny Perry (2011) are the only SAS Championship winners to make two eagles. Tom Pernice, Jr. made just one bogey when he won in 2009, the fewest by a winner in tournament history. Bruce Lietzke (2002) and Perry (2011) are the only winners to have survived a double bogey en route to victory. The winner of this event has come from the final grouping nine times in 13 years, including eight of the last nine years. Oldest and Youngest: Mark Wiebe s victory at the 2007 SAS Championship just 10 days after he turned 50 equaled the Champions Tour s all-time record for youngest winner. Bobby Wadkins won the 2001 Lightpath Long Island Classic just 10 days after turning 50. Hale Irwin s 44th career Champions Tour title came at the 2005 SAS Championship, and at age 60 years, 3 months, 29 days, made him not only the 15tholdest player to win on the Champions Tour but also the only player to win three times over the age of 60.
