CCC has decided to take this opportunity one step further, in offering the preliminary block rounds at weekends, to encourage working players to chance their arm at a State-level event without having to take too many days' leave. The winner in each division receives a gold, silver or bronze-plated brooch in the design of a croquet mallet. You will note that the handicap range in this competition is different from those used in CCC Division events. Get your entries in early! (See attachment for details of Silver and Gold events. Entries closed 18 July for Bronze event.). Welcome also to a temporary member, Glad Pettifer from Nowra, who is here for about five months EVENTS CALENDAR The new calendar of events is attached. GUEST SPEAKER SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST SATURDAY 6 AUGUST - 1-2PM Vicki de Prazer, a sports psychologist with the AIS, will be visiting the CCC and

2 speaking on a number of topics relating to health, mental attitude, stress, etc, and their relationship to playing a sport. Vicki s session will be well worth attending and may lead to all of us enjoying our croquet more. So bring your lunch on the 6 th and stay to listen to what will be an interesting hour. Afternoon play will begin at 2pm approximately. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: COME-AND-TRY COORDINATOR AND HIRING OFFICER These two positions are vital in keeping a high profile in Canberra of the CCC and the game of croquet itself. The Come-and-Try Coordinator s duties involve attending the CCC on an average of seven Sundays over a twelve-month period, from 1pm, and introducing the game of croquet to interested people, some of whom often proceed onto our coaching sessions and become CCC members. The Hiring Officer s duties are addressed elsewhere in this issue by Peter Strauch, but suffice to say that this also is a position that not only introduces croquet to a wide variety of people, but often leads to participants attending the comeand-try days/coaching and hence - NEW MEMBERS! Please contact any of the committee members for further information. report is pending to assist the new Bisqueing and Playing Committee to put a program of coaching in place for the year. HI-LO DOUBLES For the last couple of years hi-lo doubles has translated from every Saturday afternoon draw to the morning draw on the first Saturday of each month. It seems very popular, with around 20 members attending each month, and will be continued. SPECIAL DRAWS We expect to have more regular special draws on the third Saturday afternoon each month, to include such variations as alternate stroke doubles, golf croquet, croquet skills carnivals (with prizes), scarborough (for both three players and doubles), hi-lo singles, half-court croquet, etc. These draws are designed particularly to encourage new players to interact with more experienced players in a relaxed, informal situation. On the third Saturday, a BBQ lunch will precede the draw, from 12:15 pm. GOLF CROQUET Golf croquet will be played in July and September on the third Saturday afternoon, to prepare players for the two golf croquet competitions scheduled for October and November. The first croquet skills carnival will be held in August. Please put them in your diaries and be ready to join the fun and games! FROM THE CAPTAIN COACHING Thanks to those members who responded to the survey about coaching. The responses are being collated and a NEW MEMBERS SKILLS The CCC is in the brilliant position of having 13 new members having joined in the last financial year, four of them in June. Thanks to all those members who have contributed by way of come-and-try days

3 and introductory classes. Now other CCC members can assist these new players as they work on developing their skills by attending regular CCC draws, as one's skills are pretty rudimentary after the six lessons and a couple of visits to play the game. New players don't know how to use bisques in an attacking manner (do any of us?), and should have at least two bisques in every turn to get time on the court to be able to attempt to use the other balls. New players also should be starting with their clips on hoop 5 rather than hoop 1, again to assist them to get started with the next hoop only 14 yards away rather than 21 yards. If you are drawn with new players, be as creative as you can to work with them to enjoy the sport. TEA ROSTER There is a new tea roster attached. Please make a notation on the roster on the fridge when you change your duty. CALLING A REFEREE (OR UMPIRE) A referee should be called when a player is about to play a stroke where there is a possibility that a fault may be committed, or is aiming at a ball that is in, or near, a hoop. If the opponent thinks that the striker is going to go ahead and play such a stroke without calling a referee, it is the opponent s responsibility to forestall the player and ask for a referee. Unfortunately, some players get rather upset when that happens, but they bring it on themselves by not doing the right thing in the first place. If you, as the opponent, let the player take the stroke and then have some concerns about its legality, there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes players will try placing the mallet to see if the stroke they want to play is feasible; the referee should be called BEFORE that action is taken so that the position of the ball can be properly marked. If that doesn t happen and the ball is accidentally moved, there is no way that the ball can be replaced into its correct position. If a referee is called, the player must wait until the referee has arrived and is in the correct position to see the stroke. Sounds pretty obvious, but I have seen cases where players have gone ahead and played the stroke with the referee yards away! Not only is it very bad manners, but one could easily believe that the striker was trying to hide a potential fault! The correct way to call a referee is to raise the mallet. Please don t shout out in a loud voice, referee, especially if there are other games in progress. Finally, players should accept with good grace any decisions of the referee; if a player is dissatisfied with a decision, then there are proper avenues of appeal. There is no place for intimidation of referees in croquet Peter Tavender CLUB MALLETS Just a gentle reminder! All the CCC mallets have a bright yellow tape around the handle. These mallets are available for anyone to use at any time. New members, in particular, are encouraged to try out different types before going ahead and buying their own. To be fair to everyone, it is not possible to allow people to reserve any particular CCC mallet so, if the one you like is in use, you just have to use another one! All the other mallets in the locker room are privately owned. Please do not use

4 them without the specific permission of the owner. Peter Tavender LOCKABLE CUPBOARD We have turned one of the locker room shelves into a lockable cupboard. It is basically designed for handbags, etc, which can be put out of sight when playing, and especially when there may be non-members in and around the CCC, such as during a come-and-try day. The smart black jumper with the St Kilda badge most probably belongs in the Grattan household. There is a white Henselite-brand waterproof jacket, a cream light cotton jumper and a navy item with a white band on the collar. Have you been wondering where these things are? If no-one collects them, they will be bundled off to the charity stores. It should also be used for leaving money for the Treasurer, rather than in the Treasurer s locker, which is not secure. The key to the new cupboard is kept on the members disc/keyboard. Members are reminded that they are responsible for looking after their own valuables. While this locker should deter the casual thief, there is very little the CCC can do to stop a determined person who has the opportunity to break into somewhere. Basically, we are all responsible for making sure the clubhouse is secure. For example, if there are only a small number of members playing or practising, the clubhouse door should be kept shut, and even locked, as it is not difficult for a stranger to nip into the clubhouse while the members are concentrating on their play. In addition, non-members should never be allowed into the clubhouse on their own. Peter Tavender LOST AND FOUND Four articles of clothing have been left in the clubhouse for a considerable period, and are on the shelves in the mallet room.

5 SILVER BROOCH EVENT Handicap competition for players with handicaps in 7-10 range. Entry fee is $27.50 per player. Preliminary block round to be held at Canberra Croquet Club (round robin format, minimum of 4 players); final (round robin block format) to be held in Sydney at Croquet NSW headquarters, Mackey Park, Tempe Tuesday 13 September to Thursday 15 September Entries close at CCC on Monday 25 July Please submit a Croquet NSW entry form with payment to: Brooch Event Manager, Canberra Croquet Club, Coronation Drive, YARRALUMLA ACT 2602 NB: If working players enter, the preliminary block round will be arranged for weekends of August and/or August 2005 (depending on the number of entries; may involve three games a day). If no working members enter, or if four working players enter, the preliminary block round will be arranged for the week Monday 15 to Friday 19 August Depending on the size of the preliminary block/s, from 1-3 players will be selected for the final in Sydney. Some financial assistance will be available to country players selected to play in the final in Sydney. While it is desirable, it will not be mandatory to take up the offer to play in the final in Sydney. GOLD BROOCH EVENT Handicap competition for players with handicaps in 2-6 range. Entry fee is $27.50 per player. No other flexibility is possible, due to the timing of the NSW Open Singles Championships If no working members enter, or if four working players enter, the preliminary block round will be arranged for the week Monday 15 to Friday 19 August Depending on the size of the preliminary block/s, from 1-3 players will be selected for the final in Sydney.
