History/Records Players Coaching Staff 2007 Outlook / 2006 Review This Is Deacon Golf Wake Forest University Small in size. Big in resources. Tall among national universities. 8 For eight consecutive years, graduates of the Calloway School have ranked in the top five in the nation in passing the CPA exam. The Calloway School gained extensive new space with the opening of F.M. Kirby Hall in the fall of Wake Forest was ranked 27th 27 among national universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2005 and was recognized for its outstanding freshman experience. The Calloway School ranked 29th among the country s top undergraduate business programs. Thirty percent of 30.0% Wake Forest graduates go on to graduate or professional school. Of those applying to medical school, 68 percent were accepted in the most recent year, compared to the national average of 47 percent. Sixty percent applying to law schools were accepted. The School of Law is consistently ranked among the top schools in the country and was named the nation s best value in 2004 by National Jurist. Half of all undergraduates study abroad 50.0% by the time they graduate, either at University-owned residences in London, Venice and Vienna, or through other programs in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. Two thirds of all undergraduates receive 66.7% financial aid. Wake Forest maintains a need-blind admissions policy; students are considered for admission regardless of their ability to pay tuition. 6

Academic Excellence Wake Forest posts high scores in the classroom, low scores on the links. In Jerry Haas 10 years as Wake Forest s head coach, 100 percent of his players have earned a degree. This Is Deacon Golf 2007 Outlook / 2006 Review Coaching Staff Players History/Records 7

History/Records Players Coaching Staff 2007 Outlook / 2006 Review This Is Deacon Golf Endowment Fund The Wake Forest golf tradition continues through the generosity of its benefactors Wake Forest is proud to claim one of the nation s strongest collegiate golf traditions. To ensure the continuation of this tradition, the Wake Forest Golf Endowment Fund has been established to provide income for scholarships, facility maintenance, and general operating support. The purpose of the fund is to fully endow the men s golf program and maintain the high level of quality for which the program is known. It was a dream of Golf Coach Emeritus Jesse Haddock that the program be fully endowed and self-sustaining. Already participating in the endowment program are PGA Tour professionals, golf alumni and friends of the university. There are various ways to fund this program, and those who have responded have made outright gifts of cash, stock gifts and life insurance beneficiary gifts. Even with the rising cost of education, Wake Forest is determined to reach the goal to be financially self-sufficient. Once attained, this goal will again set Wake Forest apart as the unique, quality program we have come to expect. To fully endow the golf program would be a rarity among colleges and universities across the country and would allow Wake Forest to continue to attract outstanding student-athletes interested in the golf program. The Wake Forest men s golf program appreciates the support and generosity of those who will participate in the future and make the objective of being fully endowed a reality. In 1950, Wake Forest golfer Buddy Worsham was killed in an automobile accident. The loss of his best friend inspired Arnold Palmer, whom Worsham encouraged to enroll at Wake Forest with him, to establish the Buddy Worsham Scholarship Fund. Palmer began the fund in the early 60s in memory of his admired and respected friend. That original investment of $500 has grown to over $200,000 and is administered by the university. In the fall of 1994, a scholarship in the name of Arnold Palmer was established by Walter Annenberg and the Annenberg Foundation. The Arnold Palmer Scholarship Fund creates yet another opportunity for Wake Forest golf. The Andrew G. Milne Scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of Andrew Milne, the son of former WFU golfer Dennis Milne. Friends of the family, who originated the fund, hold a golf outing each year in Pennsylvania to raise money for the endowment. The scholarship is awarded yearly to a men s or women s golfer, who may be but does not necessarily have to be from Pennsylvania. The John R. Knott Scholarship is named for the former member of the Board of Trustees who had a great interest in golf, especially the Deacon program. The Lanny Wadkins Scholarship is named for the current successful and popular professional who competed for Wake Forest from and was a two-time All-American. The men s golf scholarship was endowed by an initial gift by Wadkins in The Donald and Elizabeth Cooke Foundation Scholarship was established in 1995 with a gift by the Foundation s board of directors. The scholarship is awarded to a member of the men s or women s golf team in honor of the Cookes love for the game of golf. In 1996, the Joseph M. Bryan, Sr. Scholarship was established to assist the Wake Forest golf programs. An avid golf fan and successful businessman, Bryan left a $500,000 bequest to Wake Forest to help support both the men s and women s teams. Bryan was a top executive for 30 years with what is now the Jefferson-Pilot Corporation. He loved golf, attended the Masters annually and became involved in the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. The Bryan Scholarship is awarded to a rising junior on each team and is based on the player s contributions to the team and academic achievement. In 1997, the Ernie Douglass Memorial Golf Fund was established by the family and friends of Douglass, who passed away in The fund is used to support a men s or women s golf scholarship or towards golf operating expenses. A prominent businessman in Raleigh, N.C., Douglass daughter, Katherine Hesmer, attended Wake Forest in the 1980s and was an avid golfer. The Steve Walker Golf Endowment was established as part of a life insurance policy on Walker, who died tragically in The endowment is used to support either a scholarship or general operating expenses. A 1972 graduate of WFU, Walker played golf for the Deacs and roomed with teammate Lanny Wadkins. Walker lived in nearby Burlington, N.C., where he worked as a club golf pro. Both his wife, Becky, and his son, Will, attended Wake Forest. Also in 1997, Richard Phelps established the Bob Goalby Golf Fund in honor of the golfing great to support the WFU men s golf program. Though neither attended Wake Forest, both Phelps and Goalby are parents of WFU alumni and loyal supporters of the university. Goalby, who is also the uncle of current Deacon head coach Jerry Haas, was a longtime member of the PGA Tour and the 1968 Masters champion. In recent years, Wake Forest alumni and highly successful professional golfers Len Mattiace and Jay Sigel, both winners on the PGA Tour and Champions Tour respectively, have established endowment funds for the program. Martha Brame established the William J. Brame Athletic Scholarship Fund in the fall of 2002 to honor the memory of her husband who passed away in Bill was a great friend and fan of Wake Forest athletics. He attended most athletic events and was frequently on campus during the week to raise spirits ; he always had a kind word for everyone whose path he crossed. He also enjoyed playing golf and was good friends with Haddock. The William J. 9 Deacon Club A financial gift to the Deacon Club does more than support Wake Forest athletics; it allows a studentathlete to obtain an education from one of the best universities in the nation. It Is Our Goal to win NCAA Championships, to attend annual bowl games in football, to consistently fill our athletic venues, to be competitive on a national level in all of our sports and to prepare our studentathletes to have a positive impact on society. With your support, these remarkable young men and women, along with their skilled coaches, have achieved tremendous victories for this university. Because of your support, you were there with them for every pass, run, dunk, goal, sack, swing, hurdle, shot, lap, pitch and point. We will achieve that goal by continuing to employ coaches and administrative staff who embody the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, ethical behavior and sportsmanship. We will achieve that goal by recruiting studentathletes who are academically prepared for university work and have the will to win. We will use the funds we have in the most efficient manner possible to maintain and build state-of-theart facilities for studying, practicing and competing. We will get there by growing the number of Deacon Club supporters to our annual, endowment and capital funds, along with the number of fans we have attend our competitions. It is our vision that Wake Forest Athletics be nationally recognized for its success. 10 History/Records Players Coaching Staff 2007 Outlook / 2006 Review This Is Deacon Golf The Haddock Center Wake Forest s spacious on-campus practice facility The Jesse I. Haddock Golf Center, dedicated on the Wake Forest campus in October of 1988, faces a 325-yard driving range, five target greens and a putting green with practice bunkers. The Haddock Center itself, which serves as the headquarters for the Deacon men s golf program, features three enclosed hitting bays for play in inclement weather, the Lanny Wadkins Players Lounge and a video studio as well as offices for the Wake Forest golf staff. For the coach who built the Wake Forest program from scratch to one of the finest in America, having the center named after him was a once-in-a-lifetime honor. The center is very meaningful to me, says Haddock, who has 11 former players on the PGA Tour. I am very proud of our complex because it symbolizes what we have accomplished in collegiate golf, and it represents the fine young men who have played at Wake Forest. I think this complex also gives a message that Wake Forest University will always continue to strive for excellence in its athletic program, and in collegiate golf. Our program, its past and its future, rests with our alumni, who continually sell our program to the golf world every day. I hope they take as much pride in this facility as I do, because they are responsible for its development. Those golf alumni, who annually show their loyalty to the program through the Wake Forest Pro-Am, the Golf Endowment Fund and other ventures, added significantly to the fund-raising drive that made this facility possible. The three hitting bays are named for three alumni who spearheaded that fund-raising effort Jim Simons, Jay Haas and Curtis Strange. As noted above, the players lounge is named in honor of Lanny Wadkins. The first call I got on my new phone after moving to the Center was from Curtis, Haddock recalls. He was playing in Europe and couldn t be here for the dedication, but he told me that I d be receiving an envelope soon that I d really like. No other program in the country in any sport can claim the loyalty from the alumni that we are blessed with at Wake Forest. We know that Wake Forest University sells itself in recruiting, says the Golf Coach Emeritus. We also have a tradition in golf at Wake Forest that is so well-known. Future players will continue to benefit from our complex. These young men will be able to use the luxuries that our hard-working alumni have so generously made possible. 10

Old Town Club The Demon Deacons Home Course Old Town Golf Club, just a stone s throw from the Wake Forest University campus, has been a home of Demon Deacon golf for decades. Old Town is as deep in tradition as the Deacon golf program. For first-timers, it s readily apparent that Old Town is not your typical country club. Tucked away in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, the club's entrance is subtly marked, and the clubhouse isn't dressed up with elaborate gear. Nothing glitzy cuts the eye. With 340 members, Old Town is modest in size, but the golfing membership is even smaller. The old-timey first tee sets the stage for an old-fashioned round of golf. Not only is it positioned just outside the clubhouse door, but it also rests inconspicuously on top of native terrain. Old Town evokes an antiquated sensibility by its very name, but the old-style feeling and spirit continues to reveal itself throughout the 1939 Perry Maxwell layout. Golfers can't help but notice the archaic stonewalls and bridges, which emerge from the course like ruins. Vintage wooden flagsticks and traditional cast iron cups are also used as throwbacks from yesteryear. "Standard groups comprise five or six golfers", says Jim Holt, Old Town's gregarious club professional. After all, the golf shop doesn't even take starting times, a long-established practice that all members embrace. Old Town protects its anonymity with equal success. From its infancy, the golf course has reigned quietly as one of America's best-kept secrets. Charlie Babcock and his wife, Mary Reynolds Babcock, of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco family, donated 170 acres to establish Old Town Club, adjacent to their historic estate, now showcased as the Reynolda House and Gardens. The sweeping character of the terrain highlights Old Town's routing. Bradley Klein, architecture and design editor for Golfweek, admitted, I didn't realize how extraordinary the property was until I approached the interior stretch and noticed that distant site lines and sweeping vistas were available of the entire premises". Old Town has always been the home of the Demon Deacon golf teams and has groomed many tour professionals including Curtis Strange, Lanny Wadkins, Scott Hoch, Leonard Thompson, Gary Halberg, Jay Haas, Billy Andrade, Len Mattiace, Jay Sigel, Laura Diaz, and Darren Clarke. 12 History/Records Players Coaching Staff 2007 Outlook / 2006 Review This Is Deacon Golf Sean Moore won the ACC championship as a freshman in Atlantic Coast Conference One of the nation s premier golf conferences Since the league s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured four national golf titles. Clemson captured its first ever ACC and NCAA title in Wake Forest, with its league-leading 18 ACC championships, captured national titles in 1974, 1975 and North Carolina is second to the Demon Deacons with 11 ACC crowns. Clemson and Georgia Tech have each captured nine league titles, including eight outright. Clemson and NC State were co-champions in 1990, while a year ago, Georgia Tech shared the title with North Carolina. Duke has won the league championship six times while Maryland and NC State each have shared one ACC title the Terrapins and South Carolina tied in 1964 while the Wolfpack and Clemson deadlocked in Wake Forest leads all league schools with 21 ACC individual champions. North Carolina is second with 13 followed by Duke (6), Georgia Tech (6), Clemson (5), NC State (3), Maryland (1) and Virginia (1). Six ACC golfers have captured NCAA medalist honors, with Wake Forest claiming three of those honors in Curtis Strange (1974), Jay Haas (1975) and Gary Hallberg (1979). North Carolina s John Inman captured individual honors in 1984, Clemson s Charles Warren brought home the individual title in 1997 and Georgia Tech s Troy Matteson, in 2002, was the last ACC player to win the NCAA individual honor. Eight of the league s 11 golf teams took part in the NCAA Regionals a year ago and six of those teams - Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest - advancing to the NCAA Championship. The Demon Deacons finished tied for third while Clemson tied for seventh and Duke finished 12th. The 11 schools that carry the ACC banner this spring have produced 165 first, second or third team All-Americans, eight national Player of the Years and three national Coach of the Years. 12

Helping Out In The Community Deacon golfers volunteer their time to lend a hand Clubs In Common Golf Unites Simpson With Special Olympics Athlete By Megan O Donnell Special Olympics North Carolina vice president of communications Carl Hibbert, Jr. adjusted his plaid bloke s cap to block the sun and leaned over to get a better look at the line of his putt. After reading the green, he non chalantly pocketed a silver quarter that had marked his ball. This was Hibbert s routine on the greens during his first round at the 2006 Special Olympics North Carolina Fall Games in High Point and his caddy Webb Simpson could only smirk at Hibbert s sly shift of hand. In his first Special Olympics experience Simpson, a junior at Wake Forest and the top-ranked amateur golfer in the country, was having a grand time. Carl s a good golfer, chuckled Simpson. Smart too. He s making money out here today. Every time I mark his ball with a nickel, dime or quarter he pockets it. Every time I put down a penny he throws it back to me. I ll be lucky if I can get home tonight without stopping at the bank. Simpson and Hibbert are both members of the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh and their families have known each other for years. Both are coached by the Club s pro Ted Kiegiel and with so much in common seemed to be a good pair for the competition in the Piedmont Triad. Simpson s schedule of classes, collegiate competition and an opportunity to play in the World Amateur Golf Team Championship in South Africa freed up when he broke his hand in early October. The setback to his game however allowed him to participate in not just one, but two rounds with Hibbert at the SONC Fall Games. It gives us a good chance to catch up, said Hibbert. I m just proud to call Webb my friend. All right buddy, 95 yards to the right, drop it in, encouraged Simpson before whispering out of earshot. I m more nervous here than I am when I m playing. Advice on club selection, strategy, swing tips and support were all a part of the caddy job description and Simpson took the role seriously. He found himself pulling hard for Hibbert. I don t want to let him down, said Simpson. His signature shot is a draw to the left and he s hitting his driver about yards so I m trying to pick out the best targets for him. I didn t lose a ball all day and didn t lose the cart, joked Hibbert. So I did pretty well. Golf is a game that cannot be won only played. Hibbert won a silver medal for his performance but his perspective on the game is what Simpson will remember most from the two-day competition Nov It was fun to be out there with guys who love the game, said Simpson. They re competitive but not just looking for results. They take what comes with a smile and they pull for each other and that s refreshing. Not having been on a golf course in a month due to his injury, the experience also re-ignited Simpson s passion to play. Carl had to hold me back at times, he said. I wanted to hit a few shots. I m ready to get back in there. Simpson will be back on the links by December and thanks to his Special Olympics experience will bring with him a new found appreciation for the game and his opponents.
