2 THIS IS CATAWBA COLLEGE Catawba College was founded in Newton, North Carolina in 1851 by the German Reformed Church. In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution, with the first woman graduate completing her studies in Officials closed the Newton campus in 1923 and moved to its present location in Salisbury, re-opening in In 1957, the Evangelical and Reformed Church merged to form the United Church of Christ, with which the College maintains affiliation. Catawba seeks to serve the Salisbury-Rowan County community through its programs and services. The Roberston College-Community Center, a facility built as a joint venture with the community over 35 years ago, houses the Shuford School of Performing Arts and showcases musical and theatre productions from the college and the community. Similarly, the college s athletic facilities have been enhanced be the local community and are available to the local residents as well as the students. In the more than 75 years since Catawba opened its doors in the Salisbury community, it has built a tradition of successful graduates who continue to honor the College by their achievements and enable it through their support to strengthen with each entering class. These graduates include physicians, attorneys, teachers and college professors, corporate executives, actors and musicians, social workers and others who contribute to our society in a variety of ways. From one building, three-quarters of a century ago in Salisbury, Catawba College today has grown to a campus of 27 buildings on 276 acres, with 189 acres devoted to an outstanding ecological preserve. Almost all of the buildings on campus have undergone renovations in the recent past and two new buildings, the Catawba College Center for the Environment and the Catawba Sports Center are now completed. Over 1,300 students representing over 25 states and several foreign countries attend Catawba. The student body is evenly divided among men and women. 3 SAM GEALY Head Coach Sam Gealy is in his twelfth season as head men s golf coach at Catawba College and is guiding the women for the eleventh season. He came to Catawba from Salisbury High School, where he coached golf, men's basketball and also served as athletic director. Gealy has been named SAC Men s Coach of the Year three times and has been the SAC Women s Coach of the Year twice. He guided Catawba to consecutive SAC Championships in women s golf in 2005 and A 1967 graduate of North Carolina State University, Gealy earned a bachelor's degree in recreation. While at N.C. State he lettered in golf and men's basketball. He was a member of the 1965 ACC championship basketball team. In golf, he finished in a tie for ninth at the 1966 ACC Championships. He began his coaching career at Bunn High School, coaching football, basketball and baseball. Before moving to Salisbury High School in 1985, he also had stints at North Rowan High School and Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. At Salisbury, he led the golf team to four state championships and eight top five finishes over the last eight years. Gealy's Hornets tied a state record with three consecutive titles from He also coached the boy's basketball team to a state title in Gealy, who was born and reared in New Castle, PA, resides in Salisbury with his wife, Judy. Judy is a retired mathematics teacher from Salisbury High School. They have two sons, Todd and Elliot. Todd is a teacher with ICS in Bangkok, Thailand. Elliot is the lead instructor with the Mike Bender Golf Academy in Inchon, South Korea. ADMISSIONS Inquiries regarding admission to Catawba College are always warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining the Catawba community, you should apply for admission anytime after your sixth semester of high school. Catawba follows the usual guidelines for rolling admissions and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting applications. Applying early will ensure an early response from the college. In your application, you are asked to provide a wide variety of information relating to your academic and co-curricular background. This information is used to help determine your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the Catawba community. You must complete a minimum of 16 units of high school course work, 12 of which should be in academic subjects. The following college preparatory course work is strongly recommended: four units of English; three units of mathematics (Algebra I or above); three units of Laboratory Science; three units of Social Science; and two units of foreign language. Your admission to Catawba also will be evaluated by class rank, grade point average, SAT or ACT examination scores, and academic course selection.
