1 Fostering the game for all amateur golfers in NSW C lub onnect ONE BRAND ONE BUSINESS ONE ADMINISTRATIVE BODY Volume: 1 / 13 August 2010 Welcome to our inaugural edition of Club Connect As most would be aware, the NSW Golf Association and Women s Golf NSW merged to form the historical alliance in Golf NSW on the 1 st July From that day forward fourteen staff have teamed up to make the alliance come to fruition, witnessed in the number of programs and events that have successfully taken place. We have had some great feedback on our new logo that is showcased on the website and in several publications such as the Pacific Golfer and Inside Golf. We are currently conducting numerous audits across the organisation to fine-tune our information and database management and investigate better ways to communicate with our stakeholders. We expect to work through this process over the next few months. Our aim is to continue to provide the dual websites; as we integrate information and build our new site. The Golf NSW Team have worked tirelessly to understand each other s roles and pitch in where needed. The team is governed by the Golf NSW Board comprising Chairman Chris Allen, Deputy Chairman Sue Fabian, Chairman of Finance John Waanders, and Directors Carolyn Bloch, Frank Gal, Alan Harrison, Jean Moran, Lynne Ritchie and Darrell Watts. Sub Committees have also been finalised and a detailed list is available on our website under About Golf NSW. The new committees include Match Men s (Les Browne - Chair) and Match Women s (Sandra Gillies - Chair), Rules & Amateur Status (Frank Gal - Chair), Chris Allen Handicapping & Course Rating (Lynne Ritchie - Chair), Finance (John Waanders - Chair), Audit & Risk (Alan Harrison - Chair).

5 Meet the faces behind the scenes Golf NSW Staff Ann Larson - Receptionist Ann s pleasant voice is the first one you would hear on most occasions and the first friendly encounter you would have on visiting our office. She is extremely quick to locate and transfer queries to the most appropriate person given all staff have to juggle numerous roles. Ann has been with the NSWGA since July Ann is also overseeing the De Bortoli Wines Hole-in-One Program and data entry for the Clubs and Rules databases. She also gathers and stores the media clippings to preserve news articles about golf. Adam Dransfield - Office and Golf Administrator Adam holds the fort as our Office and Golf Administrator. He has been quick to learn the databases for this Bulk Mail-Out which is no easy feat. Administratively he has been like clockwork ensuring our communications get mailed out keeping the offices running smoothly. He is the other voice behind the scenes filling in for Ann when she is away. Adam is one of Golf NSW s newest staff with only six months into the role before the merger. He stepped in quickly to oversee programs such as the Senior Order of Merit, Open and Senior Vardon, major Metropolitan Pennants, the Junior Metropolitan Pennants, Eric Apperley Shield, Warren & Gibson, Sponsor and Invitational Golf Days. Julia Skamperle - Events Administrator Julia is an early starter arriving first each morning. Her position has been particularly busy with the introduction of women s events into her role as Events Administrator. She was involved with the men s events while working for NSWGA for the past two years. Her roles include almost anything and everything to do with event support from processing event entries information, organising prizes and trophies, creating competitions in GOLFLink, processing the stream of paperwork flowing in and out of events. She is on hand helping Graeme, Christy and Donna on events and still manages to field queries from our members. A true multi-tasker!!! Donna Mitchell - Golf Programs Co-Ordinator Donna works closely with Julia and Christy on running the women s golf events and the continuous competitions such as the 3BBB, Goodwill Plates, etc. She has taken over WGNSW s Emily Miller s position stepping into the role with aplomb! Donna was the Captain at the Everglades Country Club on the Central Coast. She treks the two-hour commute by train to the Golf NSW office, and smiles doing so!!! Donna is a delightful addition to the team as its newest member and the very first to be employed by the amalgamated Golf NSW, not associated as a staffer formerly employed with either NSWGA or WGNSW. Welcome on board Donna! Christy Collier - Events Manager Christy s resourcefulness and energy can be seen while she manages the Golf NSW events. Where she finds the time to still do her fitness training is beyond many of us...such is her timemanagement skills. Thank goodness for that as the events run virtually without a hitch since the amalgamation. She was with NSWGA for the past two years. Christy overseas all of the State Championship events, the Keno and Sureshot Events, organises the Fixtures and Venues, Match and Rules Officials at events, and acts as one of the Web Editors for the Golf Department. She has also been busy supporting Donna with the women s events. Mitsie Kent - Communications Officer Mitsie liaises with the team on their communication needs and acts as the editor for publications such as magazines, newsletters (this one), Annual Reports, Yearbook and the website(s). She also manages the Golfers Club NSW/ACT program, the 50-Year Honour Roll for volunteers who contribute 50 plus years of service to the game of golf in NSW, and looks for golfers to acknowledge for continuing to play golf at over 90+ years of age, defying age stereotypes. She has also been producing promotonal items for events and programs. Mitsie had worked part-time for close to four years with WGNSW and is now full time with Golf NSW. 5

6 ... and more faces Wynter Hines - Financial Coordinator Another very resourceful staff member who has had a hand in marketing, publications, websites and now moving full time into the finance sector. She has been with NSWGA since 17 th July 2003 (she remembers the date to a tee!). We devour her cupcakes which she has been bringing to the office to fundraise for her RSPCA Cup Cake Day... although some are paying for it by loosening their belt buckles!!! [You can check out her charity on Go to Find a Cook, enter Wynter and her site will come up angel.] If you notice the photo, she surrounds herself with pink. Her office always has a bright look, and she tops it off with her cheerful and friendly attitude... another one of our first to arrive each morning at Golf NSW. Denise Rogers - Chief Financial Officer Denise was the longest serving staff member of WGNSW working with them since She was a familiar face at NSWGA too as she juggled two jobs working with the JNJGF while at WGNSW in the finance divisions. She now has a huge responsibility ensuring our finances are in order and a challenge to get the year-end audits, and final audits, completed for both the NSWGA and WGNSW to wind down both organisations, while setting up the new. How she manages to juggle all three sets of accounts has our heads spinning; as well as completing a part-time Master s Degree. With Wynter s assistance, cheerfulness and support, she has a great network in her corner. Robyn Jones - Personal Assistant to CEO A knack for human resources, Robyn has helped instill some perks in the office and ensures the team operate in a coordinated format. We love our coffee and the capuccino machine serves us well, especially since we are a hike away from most coffee shops. Robyn liaises with the Ladies Committee and the NSW Golf Foundation for their charity events. She is the person behind the scenes coordinating Greg s diary and the Board and Committee s correspondence. She has been with NSWGA for over eleven years and is one of the stable forces in the group helping everyone mould as a team. Rod Clark - Manager - Golf Services Rod was the longest employed at NSWGA serving close to fourteen years. He is the technical man behind the scenes answering the Rules, Course Rating and Handicapping queries. Just back from an overseas holiday, he has a lot to smile about with some R&R and ready to re-energise the team to keep the momentum going. He also coordinates the Golf Access Australia program for NSW and involved with the Country Coaching and Development Program. When in doubt...ask the man! Golf NSW has much to be proud of with an elite force of Rules and Course Rating Officials! James Black - General Manager - Commercial James has been with NSWGA for two and a half years. As his title suggests, James is responsible for all our commercial and business relationships. This entails all matters from sponsorship to looking after our new brand, including the respective NSW Opens. Being a former Australian Rugby representative [Wallaby], he brings a broad sporting passion to the business - if only his golf would improve! James is a new member of Bayview Golf Club. Graeme Phillipson - General Manager - Golf Graeme has the task of overseeing the Golf Operations. Graeme sits on Match, Rules, Handicapping and CR and Junior Committees, and looks after all things golf, for the long markers and the elite. He has just returned from the NSW Sand Greens Championship at Narromine and is now working on fitting out the State Teams with their new uniforms under the new Golf NSW brand. He is the person who makes sure the results and news gets to our community in the magazines and websites, working closely with Christy and Mitsie. Graeme worked in Golf Clubs for over 10 years and then with NSWGA for two and a half years and is heavily involved in Pennant competitions and the State s Major Events, so many will see him around the courses. He is also working closely with the CR Committee on the project of re-rating all of NSW golf courses under the new Rating System. 6

7 Chief Operating Officer Nicky Bethwaite Nicky Bethwaite acts as Greg s right hand pitching in when he is unavailable. Nicky came from Women s Golf NSW as its General Manager and now fulfills the role as Chief Operating Officer for Golf NSW. She has been busy setting up the infrastructure for the two organisations to merge. These include the physical movement of offices into the one location at Arncliffe, renovations, information technology, and addressing the Homebush property. She is also working with James to integrate WGNSW sponsors with Golf NSW and working with the team on the NSW Men s and Women s Opens. You wouldn t know it seeing her behind the desk, but she is a champion and ex-olympic Sailor...the best of both worlds on land and sea! Chief Executive Officer Greg Mills Greg has been with the NSWGA since September His golfing history spans over 50 years. He has over ten years experience on Golf Club and District Golf Association Committees. He was General Manager of Chatswood Golf Club and PGA Tour of Australasia, CEO of the Ladies Golf Union of Great Britain and Ireland, Executive Director of JNJGF, Director of Jack Newton Group of Companies, and Managing Director of the Jack Newton Golf Academy. He served five years initially as the Executive Officer of the Victorian/Tasmanian Divisions and later as the National Executive Officer in Career Services for the PGA. All the above highlight Greg s long administrative pedigree and love of the game. Sponsors Corner Are You a Self-Motivated and Energetic Individual???
