2 Happy New Year to the El Paso Country Club Membership Here we go and 2012 is upon us. I wish everyone a prosperous and healthy new year. I especially pray for our troops around the world and their safe return to their homes and families. A New Year means a new President for our Board of Governors. I would like to congratulate Mr. Shamaley, our Club s President, and I look forward to working with him in continuing the tradition of improvements for our beautiful country club. I am also very grateful to Mr. Mann for his leadership over the past year and I appreciate everything that he has done for us. As mentioned in my previous articles, there are many improvements that are scheduled to take place in One of the most important improvements is building an outdoor patio. At this point, we are in the designing stage. Hopefully, we will have a solid plan in place by the end of January and start the construction in early March. My anticipated date of completion is mid April. It is going to be a great addition to our club and I am certain that the membership will enjoy dining outdoors. Another noteworthy project is resolving our property tax increase. As you read previously in our September communication, our 2011 property tax rate was increased twofold. We were notified in June 2011 and since then we have been in a legal battle with the city to lower our rates. We are hoping to resolve our case before the month s end. I will keep you posted on our progress. Since this is the first article of the New Year, I am going to keep my message short and simple. It is my pleasure and utmost privilege to be addressing you during this festive time as the President of our esteemed El Paso Country Club for I would like to use this forum to simply thank you for allowing me to represent you in the preservation and continued improvement of our club, one that I know we are all very proud to be a part of. Proceeded by the efforts of Mr. Scott Mann, President of 2011, and longtime Chief Operating Officer, Andy Khatami, I realize I have a hard job to improve upon, but genuinely look forward to the challenge of continuing overall excellence and taking our club to yet another level. My hope and goal is to focus on El Paso Country Club as a whole. In that, I want to address all parts of our club- ensuring satisfaction to each and every member and assuring time on the property is one that is W ords from the President enjoyable and encompasses all member needs and expectations. I feel confident that after my six years as a board member, and with the help of current board members as well as input from our peers, we can accomplish our goals while preserving the longtime tradition and prestige this club has garnered over many years. 4 4 We here at the Shots of the Month Desk hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with their families this past year. The cold weather kept some of you indoors, but a few brave souls ventured out and came back with some amazing shots. Our first Shot of the Month was a late entry that came into us after we went to print in November. Mark Tomlin, playing along with his son, Will, and Adin and Christian Brown, had an amazing shot on the 26 th of November. His 15 foot putt found the hole for an eagle 3 on the 13 th hole. The putt was made even better by the fact that he put it there from across the ditch, easily 250+ yards away! Looks like all the instruction he has been giving his wife, Julie, has rubbed off on him! Congratulations Mark. Our next Shot of the Month came to us on the 17 th of December. Mr. Tom Bailey achieved the remarkable feat of a hole in one while playing the Sunrise Course at Underwood Golf Complex. Tom scored his ace with a 7 iron from 155 yards. Witnesses to the shot were a Mr. Biggamen and Mr. Kilmer, two of his Ft. Bliss playing partners. It has been said that this is Tom s first ace in 50 years of playing! We here at the Shots of the month Desk think it s only the first reported hole in one for Tom. He just didn t want to have to buy anyone drinks! Congratulations Tom on your first hole in one! Our last Shot of the Month came to us from Mr. Brett Duke. Mr. Duke holed out from 25 yards on the 9 th hole for an eagle 3 and a win on the front 9 against his playing partners, Mr. Steve Blanco and Mr. Phil Hernandez. Mr. Duke, a regular on the Shots of the Month page, had been on a break from the game, but Mr. Blanco was heard to say that Brett s clubs sure had a well-worn sweet spot before they even teed off. Has Mr. Duke been getting some secret practice somewhere? Congratulations Brett.

Once all the leaves are cleaned up we will start our spring pre-emergent program to help control the spring weeds. We are still in need of some heavy snows up north for our upcoming irrigation season.

5 5 Welcome to a new year. I hope everyone is in good health and ready for a new golfing season. Here at the golf course we have been concentrating on cleaning up the bunkers from tree roots and Bermuda encroachment. There is still plenty of leaf clean up as well. Once all the leaves are cleaned up we will start our spring pre-emergent program to help control the spring weeds. We are still in need of some heavy snows up north for our upcoming irrigation season. We started out well during the December season. Wolf Creek is considered the head waters of the Rio Grande River which supplies our rivers and lakes with irrigation water. Wolf Creek is just North of Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Last year at this time it had 168 inches of snow, this year it has had 200 inches so far. The heavy snow months for this area are January and February. With a good season we should be able to get a full water allotment for our upcoming irrigation season. So let it snow. One of the web sites I like to watch for snow is called onthesnow.com. Once there you can go into each state or country and get updates on snow fall, and ski conditions, as well as weather for that area. So if you get a chance check it out and enjoy some of the great web cams on this site. That s it for know and I hope to see all of you on the course.

7 7 The Golf Association President has the honor to select a charity to spotlight each year at this time. This year that charity is AVANCE of El Paso. Taylor Moreno, Executive Director, was guest of the group and spoke of the dynamic program that is helping families in El Paso break the cycle of poverty. Our generous ladies contributed $905 to further the work of AVANCE of El Paso. Thank you ladies! Year end awards were handed out at the Installation and Award luncheon on December 13 th. Congratulations to: Most Improved Golfer, Nancy Bauchert, and Mark Pelletier Award Winner, Susie Long. Congratulations to the newly Installed officers! Best wishes for a great 2012! The first (in many years) Team Play Celebration lunch was held to celebrate the winners. The Angels hosted the Devils for lunch as their reward for winning the year long competition. 8 8 My term as President of the Ladies Nine Hole Group has ended, but I wanted to write this last newsletter to wish you all a good-bye and wrap up my two years as President of this awesome group. I want to begin by thanking everyone at El Paso Country Club for helping to make this past year so wonderful: the entire Pro Shop especially Mark, Vernon and Jeremy, the Greens maintenance crew and Phelps, the wait staff and especially James and Alfredo, the upstairs crew especially Mimmy and Annette, the administration especially Andy Khatami, the Green s Committee, the Board especially the President, Scott Mann, the people who played in our Friday night tournaments, the men who wanted on the course but had to wait for us and last but certainly not least, all of the wonderful, fun ladies who make up the Nine-Holers! 13 13 n Sunday, December 18, 2011, the sounds of Christmas could be heard throughout El Paso Country Club. The annual Brunch with Santa buffet was held upstairs in the ballroom for members and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Members enjoyed Carved Steamship Round with Port Demi & Horseradish Sauce and Chicken Marsala. Children feasted on Macaroni and Cheese and French Toast. Our special guest of honor, Santa Claus, spent time taking pictures and talking to the clubs smallest members and taking last minute requests.

14 14 At the turn of the last century, El Paso Country Club was a small golf club formed by a group of eleven men. Over the next one-hundred years the membership of the country club would contract and expand, as would the size of the clubhouse and its many functions. El Paso Country Club grew to house not only a championship golf course, but a clubhouse for dining and social activities, a top swimming facility and first rate tennis courts. The physical changes brought with them the addition of competition between members and within city leagues. It also brought recognition of El Paso Country Club as the premier country club in the region. Cosmetic changes to the look and functionality of the club have been continuous over the years. The past few years have been no exception. Throughout 2011 many updates could be seen in the clubhouse and on the grounds. The cosmetic changes of the past few months will continue into the new year.
