2 A Letter from the Board We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for your continued support, enthusiasm and involvement in the Club. We are in the process of continuously improving our facility and services to members and guests. With that in mind, we will be implementing a new membership pricing strategy to simplify our billing procedure and provide more membership benefits. Our new membership dues will be implemented on December 1, 2018 and all members enrolled in autopay will be charged every 1st of the month. In other exciting news for Rio Bravo members and residents, the ownership has worked out an exciting partnership with Meir Brown bringing Cafe Med to Rio Bravo offering an exciting fare of food and beverage. Effective November 6, 2018 dinner will be served in the upstairs Dining Room from Tuesday through Sunday and will be open to the public. Golf Members are entitled to a 20% discount and Club Rio members a 10% discount on all food and beverage at Café Med at Rio Bravo. Downstairs service will continue as usual and gradually made compatible to Café Med style and quality and the same discount will apply. 4 Golf Course Update Greetings from Golf Course Maintenance. With aerification and over seeding now behind us, I thought this would be a good time to reflect on the past year. When I arrived here at Rio Bravo C.C. in mid-october of last year, I was excited about taking on the challenges of improving conditions on the golf course, maintenance practices, and culture of staff in the maintenance Here we are in September and the summer is coming to an end. We have made it through the hot months without any major problems. Greens held up well through the heat and we managed to add to our Bermuda base in fairways and roughs. We are not there in total coverage, but I believe we are on the right track and are heading in a positive direction. Next year I do plan on pre-emerging the fairways, roughs, tees and greens to prevent the crabgrass from establishing. This year I know we have a lot, but the crab will go away once the temperatures drop. Until that time we are hand pulling the crab out of the greens as best we can. The greens still putt well, but I understand how unsightly it is. department. Wow, was I in for an eventful experience. First day, I saw the G.M. that hired me driving down Casa Club Dr. with his car loaded up informing me he resigned, a shop area that could only be described as a junkyard/garbage zone, and 2 irrigation computers. One was not working and the other was so old that it was still using DOS based program. The staff was friendly, but had no direction and was left to their own way of doing things. I went home that day and thought, what s day 2 going to be like? Well, now it s a year later and I have plenty to be thankful for. First I would like to thank all of you, the members here at Rio Bravo. Everybody has been so helpful and appreciative to the changes that we are making here at the club, understanding that the course didn t become the way it was in 1 year and that it won t be fixed in 1 year. I have never worked at a club where membership was so friendly and approachable and I just wanted to say thank you. Next I would like to thank the owners of Rio Bravo. When I was hired on, I was told that I would be given the tools needed to make improvements to the golf course and they are coming through on that promise. In the year I ve been here, they have purchased a new heavy duty utility vehicle, an attachment for picking up aerification plugs, a mower for mowing around bunkers and clubhouse areas, new satellite controllers and irrigation computer, well over 200 irrigation sprinklers, and now we will be receiving 1 fairway mower, 1 rough mower, and 3 utility carts at the end of the month. All of this on top of allowing us to purchase the fertilizers, chemicals, and pump station maintenance costs that are essential to the proper care of the golf course. I thank each of you for all you ve done.

5 Last, but certainly not least, I would like to give thanks to this great group of guys: the golf course maintenance staff. (Jose N., Adan, Luis, Camillo, Rosario, Angel, and Jose R.) Without their hard work and dedication, nothing in the past year could have been accomplished. Their willingness to accept change, follow directions, overcome adverse conditions, and work as a team has been instrumental in improving course conditions in the last year. It s amazing how much we have been able to do with such a small group of guys. I always thank them in our meetings and by talking to membership I know that you all appreciate them as well. So in all, I am thankful for the last year that I ve been here and I m looking forward to being a part of making Rio Bravo the destination for golf in the central valley. 8 The Golfer s Corner Fall, the most ideal golfing time of the year! With the leaves changing colors, the temperature starting to drop, fall is the best time of year to enjoy a round of golf in beautiful Bakersfield. Fall golf is arguably the best golf of all, so here are a few tips to make fall golf more enjoyable. Wear Layers - Wear clothing that breathes and doesn t restrict your swing, like Adidas. Socks are very important as well. Double up if it s cold or take an extra pair if the course is wet. Rain gear is essential as well. It provides excellent protection against the wind. Use a Soft Ball - The temperature influences your golf ball. The colder the weather is, the harder your golf ball will feel. You can aid yourself by playing a softer golf ball to get back to the feel your used to around the greens, like Srixon. Club Up - Colder temperatures hinder the ball from flying its normal distances. Thus, if you are between clubs on your approach shot club up to make sure the ball gets there. Colder weather will also make the golf course more firm, so be mindful that the ball may roll through and off the greens. Use Hot Packs -The last thing you want to happen while trying to play is worrying about your frozen ears and/or hands. That s when the instant hot packs come in handy to keep you comfortable in the cold weather. If your hands are warm you will develop better feel on the golf club. Walk the Golf Course - Its very hard to stay loose, especially when the weather gets colder. Unless you are moving around. Ditch the golf cart, get a push cart and walk the course (if you can). Play during the middle of the day when the sun is the warmest. Shane Montoya Golf Shop Manager
