2016 NGA Media Guide 6 About the NGA The Nebraska Golf Association, founded in 1966, is comprised of all members of public and private clubs and/or municipal or regional golf associations, and/or military installations which utilize an approved handicap service recognized by the USGA and provided by the NGA. The Association is governed by a Board of Directors elected by a majority of the delegates present at the annual meeting. The Association's Board of Directors is made up of up to twenty-one (21) members representing voting members in good standing of the NGA. If there are qualified candidates available, consideration is given to provide reasonable geographic representation to all parts of the State of Nebraska. At times when the full Board of Directors is not meeting, the Association is governed by an Executive Committee consisting of the President, Vice President, the chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee, the chairman of the Membership Committee, and the immediate Past-President of the NGA. The Executive Director is a ex-officio member of the Executive Committee.

2016 NGA Media Guide 7 What does the NGA do? Among the duties of the Association include the conduct of the state's amateur golf championships, governing of its member clubs, and serving as the handicapping and course rating authority for its member clubs and members. The Nebraska Golf Association conducts the Nebraska Amateur Championship, Nebraska Match Play Championship, Nebraska Four-Ball Championship, Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship, Nebraska Senior Match Play Championship and Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship. On the junior level, championships include the Nebraska Junior Amateur, Nebraska Junior Match Play, Nebraska Girl's Amateur, Nebraska Girl's Match Play and Nebraska Little Junior Amateur. Select team events include the Directors Cup Matches and the Kansas- Nebraska Junior Cup. The NGA also conducts national qualifiers for USGA championships and works in conjunction with the Nebraska Section of the PGA to conduct the Nebraska Cup Matches, as well as present the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour. The Nebraska Golf Association also provides its member clubs with USGA Course Ratings; serves as a source for resolving questions regarding the Rules of Golf, USGA Handicapping, and Amateur Status; holds educational seminars on the GHIN handicap service, Rules of Golf, and USGA Procedures and Handicapping. The NGA also advises its member clubs about the process of conducting golf tournaments and serves as a clearinghouse for member tournaments to help avoid scheduling conflicts. Financial support is given to other Nebraska golf organizations that help make golf better in Nebraska as well. The Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association, the Nebraska Section of the PGA and the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame all receive financial assistance from the NGA. By working directly with the United States Golf Association, the Nebraska Golf Association provides its member clubs with the latest in technological equipment, including the GHIN Handicapping System and Tournament Pairing Program and instructs the clubs on how to use the programs. The NGA also supports the USGA by conducting local qualifiers for national amateur championships and providing volunteers to serve on national committees.

2016 NGA Media Guide 8 The NGA Turns 50 The Nebraska Golf Association has been around in one form or another since the first Nebraska Amateur was conducted in The amateur association conducted the championship into the 1950s, but eventually handed the tournament over to the Nebraska PGA. The pros conducted the championship for over a decade, but began to struggle with obtaining host sites. stepped in. In addition, golf in the state of Nebraska needed some structure. That s when Bob Fraser and his friends On November 11, 1966, the Omahan Fraser led a meeting at Lincoln Country Club. In that meeting, the Nebraska Amateur Golf Association became an official entity. Fraser was voted president with Lincoln s Larry Romjue his vice president. Omaha s Don Stern was named secretary-treasurer, and other elected board members included Howard McCollister of Omaha, Tom Ludwick of Lincoln, P.M. Anderson of Lincoln, Del Ryder of Grand Island, Don Bridge of Norfolk and Al Blessing of Hastings. Fraser, a three-time Nebraska Amateur Champion, and the board of directors were tasked with two objectives; give the Amateur a shot in the arm and accentuate junior golf. It didn t take long for the board to accomplish the first big step toward either objective. In its first attempt at conducting the Amateur, the Association locked down a premier site and crowned a great champion. Omaha Country Club played host to what would be Bob Astleford s eighth and final Nebraska Amateur title. It was also his sixth straight. Both are records for the Amateur. Astleford did it in spectacular fashion too. Just a couple years earlier, he had completed an incredible comeback from seven strokes back in the final round to win the 1965 title in a play-off over Matt Taber of Lincoln. In 1967, it was almost inevitable. Despite being six strokes back to start the final round, with a host of contenders in his way, Astleford leaped the field and finished in a tie with Lincoln s Charlie Borner. Astleford went on to win his title on the first play-off hole. The following year, 1968, was a big one for the Association. The Nebraska Junior Amateur was introduced and initially won by Omaha s Bob Swahn at Holmes Golf Course in Lincoln. The championship began as a combination of match play and stroke play, with 32 players competing in a match play bracket until only eight players were remaining. The format then switched to stroke play, as the top eight players played 36-holes to crown the champion. Also in 1968, the Association brought back the match play format at the major level, introducing the Nebraska Match Play Championship. The Nebraska Amateur began as a match play tournament in 1905 and continued in the format until the first stroke play only championship in The Nebraska Match Play started with just the top 16 finishers from the previous year s Amateur. Lincoln s Tim Bateman defeated Norfolk s Don Bridge, 4 and 3, to win the first title. The bracket was eventually expanded to 32 in 1972, with qualifying held for the additional 16 spots. Del Ryder eventually took over as Executive Director and served in that role till The Association progressed significantly under the guidance of Ryder. In 1973, the Ryder announced a state-wide handicapping system, to be included in membership of the Association. A few years later, Ryder arranged for golf courses in Nebraska to be rated for the first time. Under a system developed by the United States Golf Association, ratings were conducted by a team from the University of Minnesota. In 1988, the Association entered a new era, as former Lincoln Journal Star Sports Editor Virgil Parker took the reins

2016 NGA Media Guide 9 The NGA Turns 50 from Ryder as the Executive Director. Under Parker the Association continued to grow in numbers and scope, adding several championships along the way. Under Parker, long known as the Nebraska Amateur Golf Association (NAGA), the Amateur was dropped from the moniker, becoming the NGA as it is known today. The Inaugural Nebraska Junior Match Play Championship was conducted in 1990 at Ashland Country Club, and won by Kearney s Chad Lydiatt. In 1999, the Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship and the Nebraska Mid-Amateur Championship were conducted for the first time. Beatrice Country Club hosted the championships in conjunction, with Lincoln s Bob Hughett winning the senior title and Friend s David Clouse winning the mid-amateur title. Parker served as Executive Director until he passed away in Craig Ames, who started as a USGA P.J. Boatwright Intern with the NGA in 1997, took over as Executive Director in 2001 and continues to serve in that role today. Under Ames, the Association has continued to grow its championship schedule, while also adding other competitive outlets for players of all ages and skill levels. Junior golf is still a main priority of the Association, and juniors in the state now have an unmatched amount of opportunities to learn, play, and compete. Today the Nebraska Golf Association upholds the traditions of conducting state championships, now totaling 11, while also conducting qualifying for eight USGA Championships. In addition, the NGA presents three select team events, an Interclub program, Fall Junior Series and an Intercollegiate Tournament. On the junior golf side, the NGA s FORE! program began in 2012 and has given thousands of juniors a chance to play golf for just $4 per round. In a partnership with the Nebraska PGA Section, the NGA presents the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour, which offers over 70 competitive events for juniors of all ages, experience and skill levels. The two organizations also conduct the state s Drive, Chip and Putt qualifiers, giving juniors a chance to make it to Augusta National Golf Club. The NGA presently has around 23,000 individual members and more than 160 member clubs, and is the Handicapping, Course Rating and Rules of Golf and Amateur Status authority in the state. Among other benefits, Individual members of the NGA receive a USGA Handicap Index as part of their membership, while member clubs are provided with the USGA s GHIN products, and Course Rating services free of charge. Through the support of those members and member clubs, the NGA has strengthened the game of golf in Nebraska, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

2016 NGA Media Guide 48 Maschka Masters Greens at Kearney CC A sweet putting stroke and a good feel for some tricky greens. That s what it took for Omaha s Nolan Maschka to climb to the top. Maschka s masterful putting won him the 26th Nebraska Junior Match Play Championship at Kearney Country Club in June. Excited, I m really excited, Maschka said after his win in the Final. Everything went well today, I was making a lot of putts, and out here you have to make putts to win. Potthoff won No. 15 with a par, and nearly squared the match on the par 5 17th hole, but his birdie attempt lipped out and Maschka got up and down from left of the 18th green to close out the match. I m exhausted, I didn t get enough sleep last night, I only got like four hours, but I m hanging in there, Maschka said. I was anxious, I wanted to win it, and I came out here and won it. Maschka gave a lot of credit to his caddie and Creighton Prep teammate, Nash Holm. Maschka defeated Scottsbluff s Koy Potthoff in the 36-hole Championship Final, 1 up, to claim his first Nebraska Golf Association title. I ve never putted better, I don t think, Maschka said. It was a back-and-forth match, as Maschka birdied the par 3 second hole to take a 1 up lead, but the two traded blows on the first nine holes. Potthoff won the 8th hole to take a 1 up lead, but Maschka won the 9th hole with a par to square the match. Maschka then won holes No. 12, 15 and 17 to push his lead to 3 up. Potthoff answered with a par on the 18th hole to cut the lead to 2 up after the first 18 holes. Potthoff carried the momentum into the second 18 holes, winning the 21st hole with a birdie and winning the next two holes to take a 1 up lead. Maschka came back to win three of the next four holes, including a birdie on the par 3 10th hole. He then rolled in a birdie on No. 13 to go 2 up with five to play. It was close all the way through, Nash got me through it, kept me in it on every shot and told me where to hit it, Maschka said. So this win goes to Nash also. It wasn t an easy road for Maschka; in fact he had to stage a couple comebacks to make it to the Final. He was 3 down to 2015 NSAA Class C State Champion Jay Cottam of Hebron on the back nine in the quarterfinals. He won three of the next four holes, playing the back nine in 4-under, and eventually won in 20 holes with a par on No. 2. Maschka then won the first two holes against Papillion s Josh Wilson in their semifinal match, but Wilson answered and held the lead for much of the match. Wilson s lead grew to 2 up through 15, but Maschka finished strong, winning the last three holes, including a 25-foot birdie on No. 18. Potthoff had to fight from behind as well, losing four of the first six holes in his quarterfinal match against Omaha s Tommy Pieper and two of the first three in his semifinal match against Lincoln s Patrick Clare. Potthoff rebounded and won both matches before they reached the 18th hole. He didn t have a match reach the par-4 finishing hole until the Final. Maschka shot a 73 (+2) in Stroke Play Qualifying to earn the No. 10 seed and four of his five matches went the distance, including two that went extra holes. The defending champion, Alex Schaake of Omaha, earned Stroke Play Qualifying medalist honors and the No. 1 seed with a 4- under 67. However, after winning his opening match, Schaake would fall to Omaha s AJ Nolin in the Round of 16.

2016 NGA Media Guide 49 Hannah Thiele Wins Rematch Against Sister The third time s the charm for Wahoo s Hannah Thiele. She made the Nebraska Girls Match Play Final in 2012 at the ripe, young age of 14, only to face possibly the most dominant girls golfer ever to come out of Nebraska, Doniphan s Danielle Lemek. Lemek won nine of the 11 holes they played to claim her fourth straight title. At 15 in 2013, Hannah caught a tough draw and had to face older sister Haley in the quarterfinals, losing 5 and 4 to the eventual champion. The sisters met again last year, this time in the Championship Final. Haley played the front nine in 31 (-5) and Hannah could not recover, with Haley winning the title again, 3 and 2. After the sisters were the only players to break 80 in Stroke Play Qualifying for the 53rd Nebraska Girls Match Play Championship at Kearney Country Club in June, Haley claiming the No. 1 seed and Hannah the No. 2 seed, a rematch in the Final seemed inevitable. Sixteen players advanced to Match Play, and after the Round of 16, eight girls were left and four of them were Thieles. The three sisters from Wahoo, Haley (8 and 7), Hannah (7 and 5), and Lindsey (2 up) cruised into the quarterfinals, while cousin Morgan of Kearney won 2 and 1 to also advance. The other two top four seeds also advanced, as Scottsbluff s Jordan York won in 19 holes and Elkhorn s Megan Whittaker won 8 and 7. tournament, the greens were tough, but the course was in great shape. Hannah made it clear that it was her time. She lost just one hole, the par 3 second hole, but never trailed in the final match after winning the first hole. Haley was hitting a few putts, and she was getting her approach shots really close, Hannah said. It was pretty close the entire match, and I was getting kind of nervous there for a little bit, but she played really well too and it was a fun match. Haley and Hannah both cruised again in the quarterfinals. Haley defeated Morgan Thiele 7 and 6, while Hannah defeated Doniphan s Brandi Lemek, also 7 and 6. Whittaker also breezed into the semifinals with a 5 and 4 win over Lindsey Thiele. York again went extra holes in her match against Snyder s Hannah Hunke, before win in 19 holes for a second time. Hannah won her morning semifinal match 6 and 5 over Whittaker to advance to her third Nebraska Girls Match Play Final. Haley battled to a tough win over York in the semifinals, pulling out a 4 and 2 win to get to her third straight final. My drives were pretty consistent, which helped a lot, staying in the fairways, and approach shots close to the pins always help too, Hannah said. Putting was kind of key throughout this She won Nos. 4, 8, 11 and 14 with birdies and built a healthy 4 up lead. Hannah closed out the match, 5 and 3, with a par on the 15th hole. It s a pretty good feeling, Hannah said. Haley played some really good golf today too, she had some good shots, I had a few good shots. Last year she played really well also, it just happened to come out my way this year. The Final match lasted just 15 holes, but was Hannah s longest of the week. She had two matches last 13 holes and another last 12. It was nice to get a win finally, Hannah said. There s been some nice competition out here, so it s nice to get this one.

2016 NGA Media Guide Championship Notes Stroke Play Qualifying: Both defending champions earned medalist honors and their respective No. 1 seeds, as two-time champion Haley Thiele of Wahoo fired a 70 (-1) and Omaha s Alex Schaake finished with a 67 (-4). It was the third straight qualifying medal for Thiele, who was also the No. 1 seed when she won the 2013 and 2014 titles. She was two strokes better than younger sister Hannah (72), who she defeated in the 2014 Final. They were the only two girls to break 80. Schaake nearly aced his first hole of the day, the par-3 10th, recorded six birdies and had the low round by three strokes. Cut: Thirty-two boys qualified for the match play field with scores of 77 (+6) or better. Sixteen girls qualified for match play with Cozad s Kaylei Becker claiming the final spot with a 95 (+24). Notes: On the first day of Match Play, weather caused two short delays, a No. 1 seed went down, and seven matches went to extra holes. Upsets were abound, as No. 2 seed Tucker Knaak and 2014 Runner-Up Noah Hofman of McCook both lost in the first round. Four of the 16 boys first round matches went to extra holes. Another upset occurred in the second round, as Omaha s AJ Nolin took down the defending champion, Alex Schaake of Omaha in 19 holes. Schaake had to win Nos. 17 and 18 just to force extra holes, but fell with a bogey on the 19th hole (No. 1). Upsets were less prevalent on the girls side, as the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals. Of the eight girls in the quarterfinals, four were Thieles: sisters Haley, Hannah and Lindsey, and cousin Morgan Thiele of Kearney. Scottsbluff s Jordan York won her first two matches after each went 19 holes. Hannah Thiele cruised to the Championship, never needing to play the final three holes in any match. It was her first title in three trips to the Final, after losing to 4-time Champion Danielle Lemek of Doniphan in 2012, and 2-time Champion Haley Thiele in Comebacks highlighted the second day of match play for finalists Koy Potthoff of Scottsbluff and Nolan Maschka of Omaha, as he was 4 down through six holes against Omaha s Tommy Pieper in the quarterfinals. Potthoff eventually won 7 of 8 holes, including 5 birdies to win the match, 3 and 2. Lincoln s Patrick Clare then took a 2 up lead through three holes over Potthoff, but Pothoff won the next four holes and eventually won 3 and 1 with a birdie on the par-5 17th hole. Maschka was 3 down on the back nine in the quarterfinals against Jay Cottam of Hebron, but won three of the next four holes and eventually won in 20 holes. Maschka then trailed Papillion s Josh Wilson for much of their semifinal match, but won the final three holes, including a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to win 1 up. In the boys final, Maschka led 2 up after 18 holes, but fell behind in the second 18 after Pothoff won the 21st, 22nd and 23rd holes. Maschka answered by winning three of the next four to take back the lead. Potthoff nearly squared the match on the par-5 17th, the 35th hole, but his birdie attempt lipped out and Maschka closed out the match with a par on the No. 18. Potthoff hadn t played the 18th hole in a match until the final.

2016 NGA Media Guide Championship Preview The juniors will also have another chance for championship golf close to Omaha, as The Pines Country Club in Valley will host the 54 th Nebraska Girls Match Play Championship and the 27 th Nebraska Junior Match Play Championship June The Pines hosted the boys in 2009, when Fremont s Andy Sajevic won, but has not hosted The Girls Match Play Championship. The club did host the 2002 Nebraska Girls Amateur and the 1990 Nebraska Junior Amateur. The Pines will present a different type of challenge for the juniors, Vigil said. There will be a premium on the short game, as the smaller greens will demand accuracy, and some touch around them. The greens are great, they roll as good as any in the state. The field is again broken down to 117 boys and 39 girls, all playing 18 holes of Stroke Play Qualifying on the first day of competition. After that, the field is cut to 32 boys and 16 girls for match play. The girls championship concludes with the 18-hole final on Wednesday afternoon, while the boys 36-hole final is scheduled for Thursday. These are two of my favorite championships, Vigil said. The match play format is a lot of fun, you just see things in match play that you don t in stroke play. The Pines will favor the player who knows their strategy and can execute it. Like the Junior Amateurs, begin near the Metro area with a solid venue should make for another strong field. Included in the field will be the defending champions, Omaha s Nolan Maschka and Wahoo s Hannah Thiele. Maschka s game should be well suited for The Pines, as he mastered the greens in winning the title at Kearney Country Club last year. Thiele s consistency should also bode well for this year s championship. As with last year, these titles are up for grabs, Vigil said. The match play format and the different ways to score on The Pines should allow for several different contenders. Nolan is one of the best putters I ve ever seen, and I d imagine he will be pouring in the putts on those greens. Hannah hardly ever finds her ball in trouble, and that will be key with water hazards lurking and tight fairways.
