1 Forest Hill Golf Club Members Newsletter July 2015 Captains Week The Ladies Captain Leslie Burton greeting members on the first tee for the start of Captains week and as you can see the weather for that day was bright but very windy. The competition was Medal play over 18 holes with prizes for best nett in the categories for Ladies & Gents and the best gross, With Kim Lee finishing as the overall winner in the Ladies section and Steven McGill as the Gents winner. There were prizes also for longest drive and nearest the pin. Even though entries were a little down on last year the event was enjoyed by everyone who took part and our thanks must go to Leslie for all the hard work she put in organising the event The Club Captains Day as far as the weather goes was a different matter altogether, after prolonged rain the night before, the heavens opened and the event was cancelled this has now been arranged for Saturday July 4th so lets hope that Captain Eddie has good weather and a Captains Day great day

3 Forest Hill Golf & Country Club Page 3 Captains Diary.. Well 3 months in and its not going too badly. The entrants for club competitions in general has increased. The Captains week in spite of one set back has been a successful week. Unfortunately as you are aware, due to the weather, the Captains Day Competition had to be abandoned around 9-am. This has been re-organised for the 4 July, details for entry are posted in the club house. Entry is via the envelopes. Members who originally entered, put pre-paid on the envelope. New entrants 5 in the envelope please. After a slow start the course is improving, I have discussed with Sam about cutting down some of the long grass and he will do this over the next few days. Just a reminder about entry for the Men s Charity Open Competition. Closing date is the 5 th July. 5 per two ball goes to the Captains Charity, there are still a few tee times available. Very well done and congratulations to Frazer Jones, one of our junior members. Frazer has recorded his second victory in three outings on the Shires Junior Golf Tour 9 hole competitions, finishing clear of the chasing pack. I have no doubt we will hear and see a lot more of Frazer and the rest of our juniors who are getting a very good reputation for themselves. Final note the Mac Clarke Trophy is having its twentieth anniversary this year it would be excellent for Mac if we can make the attendance a best year ever. Thanks everybody for your help and support. Eddie Ruck Club Captain Important Information When Entering Competitions There has been a significant number of members who are either failing to sign into the computer or signing in incorrectly when entering competitions Members must sign in on the computer in the lounge area to enter any competitions Failure to do so will eliminate you totally from the competition To enter these competitions, tap the screen select your name and follow the instructions on the screen until you see the following statement You have signed into the Competition If you fail to enter correctly you will be excluded from the competition and will not get your entrance fee back
4 Page 4 Senior Ladies Open. Forest Hill Golf Club This day went really well, the weather was kind to us and everyone seemed to enjoy their round of golf. I would like to thank the following people who worked so hard for this day to run smoothly. My guys on the registration desk. Maurice Green, Dave Deacon and Mike Bancroft. Pam Bancroft who checked all the CDH numbers and wrote all the cards out ready the night before. Jan Green and her crew. Chris Hall, Pauline Pickard and Fiona Farquherson for organising the competition from start to finish. Well done ladies. Steve Hall our Starter for the day, and all the lady members who baked or purchased a cake for the half way house. Pat Lakin and Jan Masters who ran the half way house. The ladies loved the free drinks and cakes. Sam Voss the head Green Keeper and his staff - the course looked fantastic. Terri and Dawn who were run off their feet producing coffees and taking breakfast orders, and meal orders. Carl and the chefs in the kitchen. Everyone enjoyed the food. My sincere apologies if I left anyone out. The winner of the Tote for Neuromuscular Midland was Penny Ellard from Corby golf club. The shop Tote winner was Dianne Whitaker from Chilwell Manor. The Longest Drive went to Jenny Chung from the Nottinghamshire. 1st place Kay Pole & Beverly Osbourne from Rothley and Jill Smith from The Leicestershire. 2nd place Jenny Chung & Cathy Wong from The Nottinghamshire & Kim Lee from Forest Hill. 3rd place Rita Watts from Hinckley, Terri Wills & Alison Seddon from Park Hill. 4th place to Gill Lund from Forest Hill, Chris Cook & Denise Waldron from Melton. We raised 75 for the Captains Charity. Neuromuscluar Midlands. Well done to all the winners. Lesley Burton The Ladies Captain A Senior Moment As the weather improves steadily, growing conditions are ever improving on the course. This is essential to support the sterling work done by Sam and the green keepers who are working hard to make up for the poor growing conditions of early spring. Some of you will have noticed several new trees around the course, particularly near the 1 st, 8 th 14 th & 18 th tees. These trees have no leaves or blossom and their Latin name is Sphericus Laundrus non-floribunda. This may be translated as washing device for balls without flowers They have been donated by the Senior s Section and Seniors Captain Brian Watt is seen here with Marshal and Seniors Team Player Dave Bray watering the one on the 1 st to ensure it takes root.

9 Page 9 Forest Hill Golf & Country Club Presentation Evening.. The Presentation Evening was organised as a family event covering competitions starting with the Winter League through to the Captains Week Bowl, it was successful with over 70 adults and children present. The Children enjoyed the Bouncy Castle, Colouring Tables and Putting. Of course the Barbeque was enjoyed by everyone. The Presentation Table looked splendid with the Main Trophies and all the Prizes. The whole event was very well attended. It was unfortunate that several of the prize winners were unable to attend but those that did attend were very appreciative of their prizes. With everyone s support in the future this could be the main family event of the Golf Club Calendar. On a slightly different subject. Thank you to the Seniors for the 400 donation, this has purchased the 4 new ball washers recently installed on the course. What On Earth Are These Two Greenkeepers DOING? Are they asleep...no! 10 Page 10 Hole In One.. Forest Hill Golf Club Congratulations to Lynn Angelaneta on achieving her first hole in one on the 13th in a friendly game with the girls. She hit a gentle Five wood (normally she takes an iron) and when they got up to the green there wa not a ball in sight. After an extensive search they looked in the hole and there it was. Well Done Lynn More news from the Seniors.. Throughout the depths of an English winter and on into spring, 32 FHGCC intrepid Senior golfers battled the elements and contested each other in the annual winter knock out match play competition. In a closely fought final, David Deacon ( Club Captain 2014) defeated Bob Morgan. David received his trophy with congratulations from Seniors' Captain Brian Watt Scratch Team Results Seniors & Ladies Mixed Match This annual event took place at the beginning of June on what turned out to be a very windy day. 12 Page 12 THE MALCOLM CLARKE CUP Forest Hill Golf Club Who is Malcolm Clarke? to those who know him, it is Mac, although I dare say he has been called a few other things during his long membership of Forest Hill Golf and Country Club. Mac Clarke is one of the few remaining original members of FHGC - or Royal Botchey as it was affectionately called in the good old days Mac Clarke Starting The Mac Clark Trophy He joined the club back in late 1990, after it had been open for only a couple of weeks, under the management of two entrepreneurs, Alan York and Mark Fixter. What a laugh we had in those days says Mac the clubhouse was a portacabin with a bar, kitchen and changing room(ish). The kitchen staff consisted of two Labradors who assisted with the washing-up (don t ask how!) Mac has served on just about every committee (with the exception of handicap he got his wife to do that). He was appointed Club Captain for the first time in 1995, during which the Malcolm Clarke Cup competition was created by him, in gratitude for the support and friendship of the members. In 2001 he was invited to take the Captaincy for a second time, probably because the Committee thought that after the millennium, the world was due to end anyway! After completing a second Captaincy the position of Club President was officially created and Mac was invited to take on that role. What was supposed to be a two year term actually lasted for 7 years. It was generally agreed that he was a good ambassador for the club and in a role which he thoroughly enjoyed. However during his Presidency, in a vain attempt to get rid of him, a group of friends from the club had a whip round for his 60 th birthday, collecting enough pennies to buy him an introductory flying lesson which he took out of East Midlands Airport what swizz it was not in a Boeing 747, as he anticipated, but in a little two seater Cessna 152. That was it! He got the bug and went on to get a full PPL and has since ended up managing Leicester Airport. Suffice to say, his Friends have no idea how much this generous birthday present has cost him! buying his own plane was only a small part of joining the Ski Club (spent the kids inheritance). But it doesn t end there revenge can be sweet, as they say since qualifying as a pilot, Mac now throws in a free flight by way of an additional challenge in the MC Cup - Nearest the Plane challenge. For the princely sum of 1, all of which will go towards the Captains Charity, the winner will be taken for a local fright (sorry I meant flight). Mac wishes to thank members and friends for the support given, not only on the competition s 20 th anniversary but also for the past 19 years. unfortunately he has not been very active with golf since September 2014, due to a bad hip and subsequent replacement.
