Now that half of our golf season has gone by (can you believe it!) we want to make sure we stay on track in providing competitive golf events and an enjoyable golfing experience for our members. In addition, the club has a vacancy to fill. Penny Wolsky, our President-Elect is unable to fill her term due to career responsibilities. I want to wish Penny all the best. Membership Update I would like to welcome a new member Kathleen (Kit) Anamosa to the Heron Lakes Women s Golf Club. During the winter months Kathleen plays at Mission Hills and discovered HLWGC when meeting some of our ladies from Heron Lakes who invited Kit to play with us. Wow! The Club Championship is a two day event, flighted by handicap. The winners in each flight are based upon your gross score. Be sure to sign up, it is a lot of fun and our biggest payout. Do make sure you are available to play both days of the Championship. The lowest 64 players will then compete in a match-play bracket, with the champion determined by a 36-hole final match on Sunday, August 16. Portland Golf Club is proud to provide complimentary admission to all spectators for the championship. Complimentary parking and shuttles are available for all spectators from Championship Parking located at Washington Square Mall. 2

3 OGA Interclub Match Play July 8 th at Rock Creek, and then Aug. 19 th at Meriwether. (We are now in first place at 25 points with Persimmon hot on our heels at 23.5 points). We have completed two out of the five matches for the OGA Interclub competition. The first match at Pumpkin ridge - Ghost Creek was against the Executive Women's Golf Association. Heron Lakes won 13-5 with Darci Trimmer, Betty Schram, Julie Gish, Pamela Bartlett, Denise Aldridge and Cheryl Ford competing for our team. The 2nd match was against Rock Creek Country Club at Lewis River. Heron Lakes won 12-6 with Darci, Janet Elliott, Denise, April Lewis, Betty and Marsha Cutter competing. The standings in our division: 1st - Heron Lakes 25, 2nd - Persimmon CC 23.5, 3rd - EWGA 21.5, 4th - Rock Creek 17.5, 5th - Pumpkin Ridge 16, and 6th - Eastmoreland 4.5. Go Lady Herons!!! 4 Spring Handicap Tournaments The Spring Handicap Tournament went very well and conditions were perfect which promoted low scoring. The Heron Lakes folks were wonderful to us. They provided those playing on Tuesday with a modified shotgun start, so we all teed off at 8:57a.m. The rangers even chauffeured ladies and bags out to the farthest holes. Pam and Tracy did a great job working with the Heron Lakes greens department so ground under repair was clearly marked. We want to thank the Pro Shop for their time and patience in scoring for us on their computer. It certainly takes the guesswork out of math tasks and enables us to post tournament scores with the push of a button. 5 Memorial Best Ball On June 27 we had 18 players brave the heat for Memorial. We combined a Saturday player (where possible) with two Tuesday golfers and played Net Stableford recording the two best balls of the threesome. There was Gatorade on hand and the kitchen served up a nice variety for lunch. It was good fun and camaraderie, true Memorial tradition. Special Thanks to Julie Sander and Pamela Smith for Co-chairing the event. Kudos to Tracy Bardell for working with the Grill to make it easy to get lunch, recording all the scores and managing the prize money - and then being on the winning team as well! - Hollis Brown Saturday Captain Drop Zones You just splashed on into a water hazard, and now you're making that slow, painful march over to the drop zone to proceed under a one-stroke penalty. The last thing you want to do is make things worse with a procedural error from this spot. So don t forget these key points. 1. The course s committee has to enact a Local Rule designating a drop area. Don t assume every hole with water has one. Look near the hazard for a drop zone, which is typically a circle labeled Drop Zone or DZ. 2. It s usually not mandatory to use. It s just another option when hitting into a water hazard. 3. You don t have to stand in the zone when dropping, but the ball must first land within its boundary. That includes the line that marks the area. If the ball rolls closer to the hole than where it struck the course, or even outside of the drop zone, it s ok provided that it comes to rest within two clublengths of the spot it first landed, and not in any other position covered by Rule 10-2c (when to redrop). And to reiterate the ball doesn t necessarily have to stay inside the drop circle. 4. A drop zone cannot be designated on the green side of a water hazard for shots that fail to clear it.
