Mixed Foursomes Championships 2019 Time to book your partner for the annual Sorry event - Sunday 24 th & 31 st March Entry form for both the Championship and the Cup (18 holes on Sun 24th) at the Kiosk. Course Reno s Mon 11 & Tue 12 March The weather was kind and the renos went well. The follow up rain this week is ideal for a quick recovery, however the downside is we need to wait for dry weather to re sand, so the greens will be a little bumpy until this can be done. Last Friday, International Women s Day, the Sydney Morning Herald published a list of the 50 women making the biggest impact on the Australian sporting landscape. We are lucky enough to have one of that 50 as a member here. This is what they said about her: Alyssa Healy (Starc) Cricketer Healy has established herself as one of the best wicketkeepers in world cricket. She was named player of the tournament at the recent T20 World Cup and has played at the top level for almost 10 years. Alyssa will be one of the guest speakers at the Sports Lunch on Friday 26 th April. For information and reservations please see the office. RULES WITH GEORGE QUESTION: Oscar had started his round with 14 clubs. On the 8th hole in playing his shot to the green, he snapped the shaft of his 8 iron. Because the damage to his club occurred in the normal course of play, he may replace the 8 iron with any club? (a) True. (b) False.
3 FROM THE WOMEN The weather goddesses were smiling down on the women this week for our PINK charity day. What an outstanding collaborative and community effort from the women of Long Reef. Congratulations to all who embraced our Pink theme from the players to the bar, catering and hospitality staff and all those in the office. Your support is greatly appreciated. To the wonderful fund-raising team led by Shar Votano and Jill Hensman which also included Dani Montgomery, Di Muncke, Gilda Severino and the Women s Committee we are in awe of your combined efforts. Special mention to the Baking Team of Julia Deere-Jones, Kerri Perks, Wendy Langthorne, Sharyn Hillman and Dani Montgomery for the amazing cupcakes. Thank you to all the women for your incredible generosity. We certainly excelled across the board and exceeded our fund-raising goal for the Chris O Brien Lifehouse. Full details of funds raised will be confirmed next week. We should all be very proud of our efforts. Mixed Foursomes entry sheet is at the kiosk. 4 THE ARCHIVES Concerts No. 2 80s-00sThe Golden Golf Ball Awards commence results are declared without come back or question based on the criteria of humour, hard work, originality and/or presentation! All very tongue in cheek!. There are so many acts that could be acknowledged. There are probably as many favourites as there are acts. I was shocked, during the first concert that I attended in 1985 to see our esteemed President at the time, Lilith, dressed as a very large yellow chicken! Patsie was the funniest person ever, and her Rose to Annie Dyer s, Jack, in the sketching scene from Titanic is right up there! Seeing Patsie marching in the serious dance routine as an army recruit with no sense of direction or timing was close to slapstick comedy, a danger to herself and all around her! We had a real singer in Rhonda Jefferson and in our pantomime of Cinderella she was the Queen and brought along her own dog as the pretend corgi. The first and only time there has been a real live animal on stage, and he was very well behaved. Judy O Brien was such a professional act! She could sing and dance and her three handed singer was such a visual surprise. As the choreographer of the dance troupes she had very high expectations. Bernie Anderssen was the Queen of mime with her Princess Kath Hughes alongside. The Young ones in the 90s were so clever (weekend members) and I hope some remember their send-up of the Lord of the Dance all those legs and feet- and The Singing Nuns. "I was born funny award goes to our former Club Champion Patsie McConnell Prince Charming and Cinderella - Annie and Patsie The Queen of Mime Award - Bernie Anderssen Rose and Jack Patsie and Annie Dyer Fabulous all-rounders award - Judy O Brien on the left seen here with Mal Parnell - a couple of real troupers. Many famous faces have made an appearance Elvis in all his stages, even a very pregnant one thanks to Rebecca Goldsmith. Tina Turner,
5 Pavarotti, Michael Jackson and his brothers and Freddy Mercury have all been imitated. The Andrews Sisters looked perfect in their uniforms and wigs, The Spice girls had all the hand actions, and a troupe of Shirley Temples had the best wigs made out of wood shavings. Words were put to a more local Haka and Kim Sloane's Wandering Star showed the deep range of her voice. There were some real singers, not only Judy O Brien, and Rhonda, but also Annie Dyer, and Susan Walker. Annie washed that man right out of her hair! There was even a 20-voice choir one year! Friday Club Results 8 th March 2019 Division 1 (1 19) 1 st Jim Ridding (16) 42 pts c/b 2 nd Michael Smiles (18) 42 pts Division 2 (20 27) 1 st Ken Higgins (21) 40 pts 2 nd Mike Smith (24) 38 pts Division 3 (>27) 1 st Kent Sheldon (37) 41 pts 2 nd David Strevens (28) 39pts c/b Leading Lady Jan Redfern (33) 36 pts NTP Div 1 Div 2 Div 3 Nil Perry Yeldham David Strevens Balls to 36 c/b The Shirley Temples L-R Shirley Jenkins, Betty Bryant, Nola Burke, Marie Fairhall. With so many new faces in the Friday club this year the time sheet has been full again this week. The winners are strutting their stuff with all three divisions last week registering 40 points or more. Our new Friday club shirts and cap will be on show this week..time for a freshen up, we certainly got our money s worth out of the GREY ones. By the time you read this we will have completed our 4 club plus putter event and we will start looking ahead to our best ball competition in April. Rob Keir President Back L-r Judy O Brien, Mal Parnell, Kim Sloane, Sandra Mellowes Front L-r Mem Mathesen, Kath Hughes Dance troupe organised by Judy O'Brien Still to come - Character Actors, Dancers, Funny group acts, Stand-up comediennes, best Hair and Make-up, Back stage stars and Directors NSW SENIOR FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP Geoff Cranfield and his partner Matt Taylor from Stonecutters Ridge were runners up in the NSW Senior Foursomes this week at the Murray Downs Golf Club. 6 MAJOR PENNANT Major Pennant Round 5, LRGC home to Pymble, March 10 th. It came down to the last putt in the last match on the last green but unfortunately for us the putt lipped out rather than in, resulting in a 4-3 loss. In all the years that I have been involved with pennants, this was probably the most exciting game, yielding the most birdies, and attracting the biggest crowd which all lent itself to an electrifying atmosphere. To the details, and pride of place in this week s report goes to Anthony Stockini. When asked to move up the order he simply said sure, and played an inspired game of matchplay golf. Being aggressive when it was called for, especially on the greens, his well-credentialed opponent had few answers and Anthony ran out a convincing 4&3 winner in match #3. Jimmy Knox answered the mayday call and was generally in control in match #6, closing out a 1-up win on the back of his trusty putter. Caddy Dougie was quite insulted that their opponent even made Jimmy putt out the 6 footers. Don t they know who he is! The birdie blitzes came in matches 4 and 1. There seems to be something special about Bomber Edgell s matches, with highlights aplenty yet again. Luke hit it to 8 feet for eagle on the 1 st only for his opponent to almost slam-dunk his approaches on 2 and 3. Never one to be outdone, Bomber chipped in on the 3 rd after an overshoot onto the 4 th tee. There were birdies aplenty from both players but Luke looked to be safe when 4-up with 4 to play. But of course it had to get tight, with his opponent birdieing 15, 16 and 17 to take it down the last. Bomber again overshot but he held his nerve and got up-and-down for a fantastic 1-up win. A great game of golf played in excellent spirit. Before I get to the real drama, a few words on our vanquished battlers! Khan had an off day in match #2 and never got going. Kai again had an ice-cold putter in his bag and lost to a very experienced opponent. Kai can be very proud indeed of his achievements this season. Tim was very honest in his self-appraisal, struggling to replicate his excellent club scores in the matchplay arena. So it was 3-3 and all down to club champ Matt Saad playing a former state rep in match #1. And what a match it was, with hardly any bogies and birdies or eagles required to gain an advantage. Matt twice came back from 2-down and when he birdied 16 to get it back to all-square, every spectator was scrambling for vantage points. Matt lipped out a 40 footer for birdie on 17 and when his opponent sank his 35 footer for birdie and 1-up, their supporters screamed and our hearts sank. But Matt is made of stern stuff and a fantastic drive was followed by a pin-point short iron to set up a match squaring 12- footer for birdie. The putt was never missing until it did a full lip out, meaning we came up just short, 4-3. Great effort Matt! Finally, a special mention to young Cian Hughes, playing at reserve. Cian started nervously bogeying the first 2 before going 4-under for the next 12 and a 6&4 win. The final match of the season is away to Pymble next Sunday. It s still possible that we could get dragged into a relegation scrap if Bankstown can beat Bonnie Doon, so it s vital for us that we come away with something next Sunday. The team will be announced later in the week. Sean Lee Team Manage MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTIONS Membership subscriptions letters and invoices have now been ed or posted. 7 NORTHERN PENINSULA INTER- CLUB CHALLENGE RULES WITH GEORGE Finals Day.. 1 st Long Reef vs 2 nd Mona Vale at Mona Vale G C. As the top team after the preliminary rounds one would have thought Long Reef would be a chance of beating the second placed Mona Vale on their home track.we were missing our undefeated No 2 Michael Buckley and Terry Hill for today s Final Match. But we still had the team to win. We started off well winning the toss for the sixth time in a row and our first tee shots were in play. So off to a good start. But soon after Brian Cronan was informing us that we were behind in all but one match after 5 or 6 holes, but the hope was still there as we had been able to fight back as a team in our earlier matches. Unfortunately the overall scoreline kept getting worse. Some of us played well enough to win most matches but the Mona Vale opposition simply played better than us. As you know, golf is a funny game and that game sometimes leaves us as was the case for some of the Long Reef Team. Twiggy playing at no 1 was against it from the start with his opposition 1 under for the first 5 holes with the Mona Vale number 1 finishing 2 over for 14 holes. Les Browne at no 2 was in the contest all day but could never find the lead. Ian Donnelly simply had one of those days where there was no timing. Jim Moore lost his first match during the campaign. Pete Munro never got to the front and lost. Brian Ferguson lost his first NPIC match Peter Frith played fair but the opposition played better. Steve Buchan played well again tee to green and eventually was beaten. Matches Steve Twigg lost 6 & 4 Les Browne lost 3 & 1 Ian Donnelly lost 6 & 4 Jim Moore lost 4 & 3 Peter Munro lost 4 & 3 Brain Ferguson lost 2 & 1 Peter Frith lost 2 & 1 Steve Buchan lost 2 & 1 As you can see the scores do not read very well for Long Reef. Peter Frith Team Manager ANSWER: (b) is correct. Although the damage occurred during the normal course of play, because Oscar had started with 14 clubs, he may not replace his damaged club with another club. Rule 4.1b (3).
