3 3 I was really pleased with our Western Sector Meeting on January 29th. We had our election of officers finalized, and I am really looking forward to working with them. They are: Ben Musolf - Vice President Ursula Hansen - Secretary Cynthia Rivera - Financial Officer Greg Singleton - Sector Representative Our Populous Directors are: A WONDERFUL WESTERN SECTOR MEETING By Ron Jacobs President, Western Sector Vern Cooper, Laura de la Rosa, Ken Gorny, Jo Ann Jacobs, Bob Kennedy, Nancy Martignago, Manny Romo and Margaret Shindelus Working with this group along with our club representatives is going to make for a very good two years. Our meeting had many very good ideas for us to consider that can possibly be put together to make some productive things happen in the Western Sector. I was amazed at how almost everyone at the meeting was personally involved; giving their ideas, comments and welcome advice. These ideas, among a number of ideas we talked about, included how to increase the number of member clubs and how to attract youth to bocce; two very important elements in the future of the USBF. We had some wonderful discussions. Thanks to all for coming and verbally taking part in our meeting. I have taken over the task of completing and revising the annual Tournament Schedule from Vern Cooper. It didn t take long to make my first mistake. Vern, you are appreciated for the years you worked at giving us our schedule. I will try to be more accurate in the future. I Promise! We had our first tournament of the year on January 28th. Thank you Bob Kennedy for the great job you did putting it together. It is a bit of perplexing work sometimes. For those of you who haven t run a tournament, you need to appreciate the hard work these people go through to run a successful tournament. Thank you Ben Musolf and Campo di Bocce Fremont for providing an excellent meeting place. Everyone was so pleased with it to the point that it was a unanimous vote to hold our next meeting there. I also want to give a special thanks to Lillian, who provided great snacks and refreshments. I want to remind all our men raffa players that the West Coast Qualifying Tournament for the World Games, to be held in Poland this July, will be held on March 5th at Campo di Bocce Livermore. The winners of this tournament qualify to go to Chicago for the finals to make the team that will represent the United States. The application for the tournament is in this issue. Good luck to all our Western Sector raffa players who enter! Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. - Lao Tzu

4 4 Pensieri e Riflessioni Thoughts and Reflections by Frank Rivera WHAT S IN IT FOR ME? What s in it for me? The question I hear quite a bit from non-members when I ask them to join the USBF. At this point; nothing. Zero, zip, nada! Why waste your ten dollars to join an organization that has nothing to offer you. I used to belong to Kiwanis International until a job reassignment made it too hard for me to attend meetings. Their thing was Children: Priority One. Not being a child, they really had nothing to offer me, but I continued to volunteer my services at their events for years after I left. I used to belong to the Lions Club, whose main focus is on hearing and eye health. Being that I was in my 30s at the time, with great hearing and eye sight, I realized they had nothing to offer me, but I stayed with that club until I left for the same reason my days as a Kiwanian ended. My wife belongs to a women s club that has two major fundraisers; one right in the middle of the busy Christmas season. They bring in approximately $25,000 combined each year; mostly for student scholarships. Not being a student, there s nothing in it for her, yet she continues to give her time. Joining an organization, particularly a non-profit organization, generally has nothing to offer those who join. Yet people still join. When you can see concrete progress, it s easy to see why you joined. There s a satisfaction in having helped. When I was in Kiwanis, we started the Reading Is Fundamental program for the children in our area. Concrete progress. In the Lions, I participated in many Screening Days for the elderly with hearing and eyesight impairment. Concrete progress. The USBF is setting it s sights on starting programs to bring bocce to the schools so children have something to do other than wander the streets after school. We re also looking into possibly helping with Special Olympics and the Paralympic Games, but these projects take money. Lots of money. Our main source of income is through membership fees; $10 at a time. So all of you who think you don t get anything by joining USBF, think again. You get the satisfaction of helping many, many people in a community far greater than the one you live in. SAY HELLO TO TANNER Tanner Henne was chosen from among a number of contest entries to be the 2017 USBF Membership Poster Child by our distinguished panel of judges; better known as our Editorial Board. Tanner is nine years old and has been playing bocce for four years. He and his older brother Jaden have been honing their lagging skills on grandfather Bob Chiota s backyard bocce court. With the December dedication of the Columbia Park Bocce Courts in Torrance, CA, which were realized under the hard work of Tanner s grandfather and Joel Massa, Tanner and Jaden can move up to some mighty fine courts. We expect him to be a regular presence in the Southern California bocce scene pretty soon. Tanner will be our USBF Membership Poster Child for the year 2017 and grandfather Bob receives a year s free membership to the USBF. Tanner Henne The best to hold onto in life is each other. - Audrey Hepburn

6 6 THREE TYPES OF BALLS By David Canclini (reprinted from the April 2013 issue of the USBF Western Sector Newsletter) A lot of Open Rules bocce players around the country do not realize that there are three different venues of bocce played in the United States. Open Rules is only played in the United States but the other two styles of Bocce are played all over the world and have World Championships for both men and women. These two styles are Punto, Raffa, Volo, played with composition balls and Volo, played with brass balls. Composition balls are used for both Open Rules play and Punto, Raffa, Volo. There is not a standardized weight and size requirement for Open Rules play but the accepted standard is 107 mm in diameter and 920 grams in weight. This is the mandatory standard for Punto, Raffa, Volo all over the world. There is not a standardized size and weight requirement for Volo play. Players select a brass ball that fits their hand best with a weight that is comfortable. Balls must weigh between grams and diameters must be between mm. When selecting brass balls, there is more to it than just coming up with a size and weight that is best. A player must decide whether or not to select shooting balls or lagging balls. Shooting balls have rubber bands inside of them to keep them from bouncing over targets when thrown. Owners of shooting balls have to be careful not to place these balls in the trunk of a car or other hot places because the rubber bands are affected by the heat and can cause the balls not to roll true. Each of the three styles of play have their own unique rules as well as similarities. One of the differences between Open Rules and Punto, Raffa, Volo, and Volo is that the pallino and all the balls played must have their positions marked on the court so that they could be replaced in the event of an irregular play. Please notice the picture of the three different bocce balls that I have mentioned. The largest, as you can see are the wooden balls. I think they are made of olive wood. The pallino is approximately 3 3/8 in diameter or approximately 8.5 cm and weights approximately ¾ of a pound or approximately 21.3 grams. The bocce ball is approximately 5 ¼ inches in diameter or approximately 13.3 cm and weighs approximately 2 ¼ pounds or approximately 964 grams. These type balls were used until the 50 s. The Brass balls are 9.7 cm in diameter or 3 7/8 and weigh 1040 grams or approximately 2 pounds 4.7 oz. The pallino is made of wood and is approximately 1.3 inches in diameter or 3.5 cm and weighs approximately 1.7 oz or approximately 48 grams. These replaced the wooden balls and the game of Volo developed into what it is today. The composition balls used in Open and Punto, Raffa, Volo play are 10.7 cm in diameter or approximately 4 ¼ inches in diameter and weigh 920 gram or approximately 2 pounds 5 oz. This is the standard size and weigh for Open Rules and Punto, Raffa, Volo. Wooden Balls Brass Balls Composition Balls Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive. - Dalai Lama
