1 Cleveland Golf Club Newsletter JUNE / Tel : Issue 026 CAPTAINS CHARITY The Captains Charity fund now stands at 2,424. The Captains Charity Bunker is the greenside bunker on the 18 th hole. Should your ball enter this trap you are invited to put 1 in the charity collection tin on the bar. Captain Frank s charity is SNAP, Special Needs Activity Programme at Kirkleatham School. NEWS from the LINKS Well summer seems to be kicking in, temperatures this week are set to soar, but I think the big fella upstairs has a blockage in his shower system. Very little rain has fallen since the previous month and even when it did apparently it was the wrong type of rain according to the environment agency on the news reports. Any rain is welcome on the shires of Cleveland golf club, however I think even in periods of drought there is a certain beauty about the burnt off areas, or golden areas as we the green staff call them. But I don t want the golden areas spreading too far and wide across the course as the long-term effects of drought stress on the affected grass plants can cause major headaches later on in the year. The course seems to be busy thankfully all the time now, each and every day. As a result of this and as mentioned previously there are times when it will find the green staff will be working on a hole that you are be playing, once again I would like to thank you for thinking of our safety allowing us to have the priority that we need, I can testify that when hit by a ball its certainly not a pleasant experience. The presentation of the course is tip top now, and with all the fairways now having been included in the fertilizing programme, I am sure that we will see the results of increased quality and better lies especially on the 4 th, 5 th and 8 th. Hopefully the next time I put my contribution into the monthly newsletter, we will have seen a lot more rain, not as much as Noah wanted for his Arc but enough to keep my little friends the individual grass plants out there moist and hydrated. Fingers crossed. Ian Pemberton HGK OFFER TO MEMBERS In response to member s requests we will again this year run the: Voucher Scheme For 30 a member can purchase 3 vouchers each entitling them to bring 3 guests to make up a four ball on 3 separate occasions. The member must play with the guests. Vouchers are now on sale in the office and will be valid until 30 th September.
2 SENIORS SECTION 2017 Our senior team are off to a good start this season with an away close loss, an away win and a home half. With 8 points available in each match we have accumulated 12 points from three matches a 50% result. We will happily accept that and hope to improve in our future fixtures. Mar 31st Fri Hunley Hall (A) Loss 4-3 Apr 20 th Thu Brass Castle (A) Won 4 ½ - 3 ½ May 11th Thu Midd Muni (H) Half 3 ½ - 3 ½ Our next match :- Jun 1 st Thu Hunley Hall (H) NEW DRIVING RANGE The building is now complete, the water system for the toilet and range ball washer/dispenser must be flushed and chlorinated before the water supply can be connected. The installation of the poles and safety netting is underway and scheduled to take only a few days to finish. The ball management system as been selected and ordered it is readily available within a two week delivery window. The range balls have been delivered, yellow Callaway s with a Stolen From Cleveland Driving Range logo. We are hoping to officially open the driving range to coincide with our 130 th Anniversary Celebration on 10 th June. CLOSURE OF CHIPPING & PUTTING GREEN Recently whilst giving a putting lesson on the chipping and putting practice green adjacent to the clubhouse, one of our professionals, Andy Robinson was hit on the head by an errant ball off the 1 st tee. The ball was played off the white, (competition) summer tee on top of the Majuba mound, which was to the right side of the tee box. Fortunately on this occasion there were no serious injuries, only some bumps and bruises. The Management Committee have decided that to prevent any further occurrences, that this practice green will be closed throughout the summer months, whilst the top tee box is in use. It was agreed that the spare Par 3 Hole by the 12 th green could be used for chipping and putting practice. We hope that members appreciate reason for the closure and refrain from any use of the clubhouse green until further notice. NEW MOUNDS Our application for a tipping licence was submitted to the Environment Agency in December 2016, they responded with a list of queries and questions in early The consultant we engaged with our venture partner 1 st Choice Skips supposedly answered all the questions in a timely manner, yet the EA seem to be asking the same questions again. Our responses have again been submitted, we anticipate, for the last time and we hope to have a licence shortly. The purchase of the railway line land alongside the 3 rd fairway is currently on hold and we will not pursue or expedite it any further with Redcar & Cleveland Council until we have the new tipping licence. Golf balls were originally made of wood. Later, they were made from boiled feathers stuffed into stitched leather known as "featheries". The modern, and cheaper, golf ball filled with gutta-percha was not developed till There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. Balls travel significantly further on hot days. A golfer swinging a club at around 100 mph will carry the driver up to eight yards longer for each increase in air temperature of 25 F. Approximately 20 million golf balls are lost in water hazards in the UK each year. Phil Mickelson, who plays left-handed, is actually right handed. He learned to play golf by mirroring his father's golf swing, and he has used left handed golf clubs ever since. The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million. The youngest golfer to shoot a hole-in-one, known to Will and Guy, was Coby Orr, who was five years old at the time. It happened in Littleton, Colorado, USA, in That is unless you know better. Tiger Woods was 8 years old says Will. Golf was banned in Scotland from 1457 to 1502 to ensure citizens wouldn't waste time when preparing for an English invasion. 80% of all golfers will never achieve a handicap of less than 18. Golfers use an estimated $800 USD million worth of golf balls annually. [Approx 52 million GBP]
3 SOCIAL EVENING Our Social Evening for June is on Saturday 24th Your Artist for the evening is a Superb Vocalist. Mike Ellis ANNUAL DURHAM MATCH The home leg of the Annual Durham Match was played on Sunday 14 th May. It was a tough day on the links, a very strong westerly wind made the first four holes and all others going down the course lot longer than the yardage indicated. The greens were a lot slower than usual, which may have caught our players out a little but suited the visitors well. That being said the course was the same for both sides and the best team won on the day. The teams consisted of 32 players each side and the final result was a resounding win for Durham. Cleveland Durham The away leg will be played at Durham on Saturday 17 th June, our chance of getting some sweet revenge. TEAM TALK We had a really good start to our second season in Division 1 with two wins and one loss from our first three matches. The loss away to Middlesbrough was a reasonable result as we managed to accumulate 9 point, we would generally be happy with 9 points from away losses. May 3 rd Home V Bishop Auckland Win May 10 th Away V Middlesbrough Loss 9-15 May 17 th Home V Wynyard Win We are current on 4 th place in the division. Our next two matches are both away fixtures at Eaglescliffe and Hartlepool, we wish the team the very best of luck Ingredients :- Prepartion : RECIPE OF THE MONTH From Your Golfing Gourmet, Simon SPAGHETTI BOLOGNES Serves Rashers of streaky bacon, chopped 2 tbsp rape seed oil 2 Large onions, finely chopped 2 Large carrots, finely diced 4 Cloves of garlic, finely chopped 1 Kg Minced beef, lean (5%fat) 300g button mushrooms, chopped ½ Bottle red wine 2 tbsp Tomato puree 3 x 400g Tins of chopped tomatoes 2 tsp mixed herbs Salt & pepper for seasoning Handful parsley chopped Bunch of Basil 1 Kg spaghetti Lots of grated parmesan / Heat the oil in a large sauce pan and fry the bacon and carrots, until the bacon is browned Add the onions and garlic and fry until nearly softened Add the mushrooms and fry for a few minutes Turn up the heat and add the minced beef, break down any chunks Add the red wine and boil vigorously to reduce the wine by about half Turn the heat down, add the tomatoes, tomato puree and mixed herbs Cover the pan and simmer for approx 1 hour or until the sauce is rich and thickened Add the chopped parsley and season to taste, keep hot Boil the spaghetti in salted water as stated on pack. 4 Lost Ball ETIQUETTE REMINDER for JUNE If a player believes his ball is lost outside a water hazard or is out of bounds, to save time, he should play a provisional ball. Players searching for a ball should signal the player s in the group behind them to play though as soon as it becomes apparent that the ball will not easily be found. They should not search for 5 minutes before doing so. Having allowed the group behind to play through, they should not continue to play until that group has passed and is out of range. Pace of Play Play at Good Pace and Keep Up Players should play at a good pace. The committee may establish pace of play guidelines that all players should follow. It s a group s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group. Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it is apparent that the group behind can play faster, it should invite the faster moving group to play through. Be Ready to Play Players should be ready to play as soon as it is their turn to play. When playing on or near a putting green, they should leave their bags or carts in such a position as will enable quick movement off the green and towards the neat tee. When play of a hole is complete, players should immediately leave the putting green.
