2 Cal Golf s State-of-the-Art Short-Game Facility In a huge boost for the California men s and women s golf programs, the Golden Bears opened their new short-game facility at the Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland in the fall of The Cal athletic department would like to thank everyone who combined to contribute approximately $600,000 to bring the project to fruition. The lead donors were Ed and Mollie Arnold, Ellen and Joffa Dale, Jay debenedetti, Lon and Becci Haskew, Judy Isaac, and Pat and Kent Newmark. The programs broke ground on the privately-funded project in 2006 after a long planning process. The two-and-a-half acre state-of-the-art short-game facility is conveniently located on the southwest corner of the Metropolitan Golf Links near the Oakland International Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Built to United States Golf Association specifications, the facility features two extremely large greens one for putting and chipping, and the other for the aerial game, including pitching and bunker play. This was a dream of mine and Cal men s golf for 27 years and for the women s program since its inception in The facility will help improve our players from 120 yards and in. Both teams can always be more efficient in that area. It will also help in terms of recruiting because it will make us more competitive with the best programs in the country. For the first time, we will also be able to reach out to the community and host golf camps and clinics. Men s Head Coach Steve Desimone

5 STEVE DESIMONE Head Coach 35th Season Cal, 1970 Head coach Steve Desimone is in his 35th season at the helm of the Cal men s golf team in and has led the Golden Bears program to sustained success over the last three and a half decades. Cal won its lone national title in 2004 but the run his team has put together since the beginning of the campaign is unprecedented not only at Cal but on a national level. Cal won a combined 21 of 31 stroke-play events from the beginning of the season through the fall of the campaign and was in the top five in all 31 as well as each of its four match-play tournaments during the period. The Bears were the nation s top-ranked team at the end of the campaign despite a second straight defeat in the NCAA Championship semifinals and swept Pac-12 Championship and NCAA Regional titles in both and Cal s trip to the NCAA Championship was a school-record fourth in a row. Cal won three of five events during the fall of 2013 and went into the spring ranked as high as No. 3 nationally. The Bears were winners at the Saint Mary s Invitational, Jack Nicklaus Invitational and Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Brandon Hagy (Jack Nicklaus Invitational) and Joël Stalter (Alister MacKenzie Invitational) both won individual medalist honors. Cal s season that was arguably the best in the history of college golf earned Desimone the 2013 Dave Williams Award presented by Eaton Golf Pride as the national coach of the year in Division I men s golf as well as Golfweek's honor. He was also the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season to mark the third time in his career he earned the honor. The Bears posted the top 54-hole stroke-play score at the NCAA Championship hosted by Georgia Tech at the Capital City Club s Crabapple Course to earn the top seed for match play at the event for the first time in school history. Cal opened NCAA match play with a quarterfinal victory over Arizona State before the Illini ended an incredible season that saw the Bears spend nearly the entire campaign as the nation s top-ranked team in all three sets of rankings (Golfstat, Golfweek, Golf World/Nike Golf) including the final version following their NCAA semifinal loss. Cal set a modern-era NCAA win record in with 12 victories in 14 strokeplay tournaments, eclipsing the previously established record of 10 by the Oklahoma State team. Cal s first five wins came at the Gopher Invitational, PING/Golfweek Preview (shared with Georgia Tech), Pac-12 Preview, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Isleworth Collegiate Invitational to record the first sweep of its fall schedule in school history. In addition to finishing as the top team during stroke play at the NCAA Championship and winning titles at the NCAA Pullman Regional and Pac-12 Championship, the Bears had wins during the regular season in the spring at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters and Western Intercollegiate. Michael Kim, who would turn professional during his junior season following the team s 2013 fall schedule, swept the Haskins Award, Jack Nicklaus Award and Golfweek/Sagarin Player of the Year in to become the first Cal player to win national player of the year honors. In addition, Kim was one of three national finalists for The Ben Hogan Award presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the best college golfer in the nation for their amateur play for the 12 previous months. Kim, along with Max Homa and Michael Weaver were GCAA/PING Division I first-team All- Americans, with Kim adding Golfweek first-team All-American honors, while Homa and Weaver were second-team choices. All three were also GCAA/PING Division I All-West Region and firstteam All-Pac-12 selections, while Brandon Hagy and Joël Stalter were both GCAA/PING Division I and Golfweek second-team All-Americans, GCAA/PING Division I All-West Region picks and second-team All-Pac-12 choices. In addition, the Bears swept Pac-12 Player of the Month honors in , with Kim (October 2012, April 2013) and Homa (September 2012, April 2013) winning twice each, and Stalter picking up the honor for February Cal players at least shared individual medalist honors a school-record 10 times in led by the schoolrecord four captured by Kim (Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters). Burns Intercollegiate) won twice each, with Homa becoming the first Cal player to ever win the NCAA title and the third to win the Pac-12 crown. Weaver (NCAA Pullman Regional) and Hagy (Alister MacKenzie Invitational) were individual medalists once each. The NCAA title earned Homa the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway given annually to the individual medalist at the NCAA Championship. Kim also captured the Golfstat Cup given to a single player for all levels of collegiate golf with the lowest adjusted stroke average in the nation heading into the NCAA Championship. Kim (70.14), Homa (70.56), Stalter (70.68), Hagy (70.80) and Weaver (70.92) all finished with stroke-play averages under Kim was the No. 1-ranked player nationally in the final rankings by Golfweek while he finished at No. 4 according to Golfstat. Cal had five players ranked in the top 20 by Golfweek (No. 1 Kim, No. 11 Weaver, No. 12 Stalter, No. 13 Homa, No. 19 Hagy) and top 25 according to Golfstat (No. 4 Kim, No. 10 Homa, No. 16 Stalter, No. 22 Hagy, No. 23 Weaver). In 2013 Weaver also became the first current Cal player to participate in the Masters after qualifying for the event with a runner-up finish at the 2012 U.S. Amateur. In addition, Weaver gained an exemption for the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion with his U.S. Amateur showing and was joined by Kim and Homa, who reached the U.S. Open through the 36-hole sectional qualifying. Kim was the low amateur at the U.S. Open with a tied for 17th place finish, while Weaver also made the cut. The trio became what is believed to be the first from the same collegiate team to play in the same U.S. Open. Kim (United States), Stalter (Europe) and Weaver (United States) also played for their respective countries in the 2013 Palmer Cup at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware. 6 and Weaver later led Team USA to a victory in the 2013 Walker Cup at National Golf Links of America. The string of exceptional play over the last twoplus seasons started in when Desimone was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career and added GCAA/Eaton West Regional Coach of the Year honors for the first time. His squad reached the national semifinals and posted a series of firsts along the way that included a trip to NCAA Championship match play as well as a match-play victory over San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the event hosted by USC at The Riviera Country Club. Cal also won NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles for the first time in events hosted by Stanford and Oregon State, and posted a then-school-record six tournament wins. Cal finished the season ranked No. 3 both by Golfstat and in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches Poll, while Golfweek put the Bears at No. 6. The squad featured three GCAA/PING Division I All-Americans in Hagy, Homa and Kim. Cal opened the campaign with a victory at the Wolverine Intercollegiate and also shared a win with Oregon at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the Bears in the fall. The team s Pac-12 and NCAA Regional wins in the two events leading up to the NCAA Championship were preceded by victories at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and ASU Thunderbird Invitational earlier in the spring. Cal also finished second twice by a single stroke during the spring schedule to host schools Arizona at the Arizona Intercollegiate and UNLV at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. Hagy, Homa and Kim were each named secondteam All-Pac-12 and shared team MVP honors, with Kim adding the squad s Newcomer of the Year award. Stalter was honorable mention all-conference and the team s Most Improved Player. Homa (71.19) narrowly edged Hagy (71.41) and Kim (71.41) for the team s lowest stroke average. Homa tied for ninth individually at the NCAA Championship, which at the time was the second-highest finish ever by a Cal player but is now fourth after being surpassed by both his own victory and Hagy tying for eighth in All three finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Stanford Regional with Hagy third, Kim tied for fourth and Homa tied for 10th, giving Cal three top-10 players at an NCAA Regional for the first time in school history and making Homa the first player ever at Cal to finish in the top 10 in the same season at both the NCAA Championship and NCAA Regional, with Hagy becoming the second in Hagy (T5th) and Stalter (T9th) also had top-10 showings at the Pac-12 Championship. Desimone has also been honored over the last two seasons with a pair of prestigious honors. The California Golf Writers & Broadcasters Association made Desimone the first coach to receive the Jack Lemmon Ambassador of Golf Award in 2013 and the Northern California Golf Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame this year. Both honors were presented at the CGWBA s annual gala event during the week of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. In August of 2012 Cal players made arguably the strongest showing ever by a school at the U.S. Head coach Steve Desimone and associate head coach Walter Chun Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colo., when four of the school s national-best five qualifiers reached the Round of 64. In addition to Weaver s runner-up finish, Hagy reached the semifinals, Homa the Round of 32 and Kim the Round of 64. Walker Huddy was also a participant in the stroke-play portion of the event. Cal tied for 19th at the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek to conclude a strong campaign in , reaching as high as No. 13 in the national polls and equaling a then-school record with three regular-season tournament wins (The Prestige at PGA WEST, Alister MacKenzie Invitational, John A. Burns Intercollegiate) among its 14 events. All told, Cal had eight top-five finishes in , also taking third at the NCAA Arizona Regional, Windon Memorial Classic and Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, placing fifth at the Pac-10 Championship and tying for fifth at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Weaver was named a GCAA/PING Division I All-American after posting an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship that at the time was the highest ever by a Cal player and is still tied for second. Stephen Hale, Homa and Eric Mina all picked up second-team All-Pac-10 selections, while Ben An was an honorable mention choice. Homa was the team s lone individual medalist, sharing the title at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate before falling in a playoff. An had a stretch of top-notch golf to lead the Bears during back-to-back team victories when he placed third at The Prestige at PGA WEST before tying for second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The amateur play during the summer of 2010 by members of the team was noteworthy as a school-record six Bears An, Jamie Coré, Homa, John Murphy, Ben Mangum and Mina qualified for the U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay in August. No other school in the country had as many qualifiers. An, an incoming freshman who had become the event s youngest winner ever at the age of 17 in 2009 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., reached the 2010 semifinals while attempting to defend his title. Homa made the quarterfinals before falling to eventual collegiate teammate An. The 2010 calendar year was a banner 12 months for Desimone that was capped off when he was one of seven members of the 2010 class inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame during the Reception and Awards Banquet at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas on December 6. After winning its lone national title in 2004, Cal missed the NCAA Championship for five consecutive seasons ( ) before returning to its spot among the nation s elite with a 23rdplace finish in Cal qualified for the NCAA Championship at The Honors Course by tying for third place at the NCAA San Diego Regional. The Bears also posted three regular-season victories to tie a then-school record, winning the Spartan Golf Classic, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Arizona Intercollegiate. Several individuals had great accomplishments during the season, highlighted by the Pac-10 individual medalist honors won by Mina with the event hosted by Arizona State. Mina is one of only three Cal golfers to ever capture the event, with current PGA TOUR pro Charlie Wi the first in 1995 and Homa the third in Mina, who earned GCAA/ PING Division I All-American honors, also won at the Spartan Golf Classic while Hale captured the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Weaver became the first Cal player to finish in the top 10 at both the Pac-10 Championship and NCAA Regionals in the same season, tying for sixth and taking eighth, respectively. Prior to its current run, the team s previous appearance at the NCAA Championship came at the end of the magical campaign when Desimone orchestrated one of the greatest stories in the history of college golf as Cal came from eight strokes behind UCLA on the final day of the NCAA Championship at The Homestead in Virginia to win the national title by six strokes over the Bruins. 7 in which the Bears had to overcome several injuries but were able to play their best golf when it counted the most. As a result of his team s impressive accomplishment, Desimone was named Golfweek s Collegiate Coach of the Year and was honored as 2004 Grand Master of the Year by the Northern California Golf Association. When Desimone came aboard as head coach at Cal in the fall of 1979 he was taking over a program which had lost its varsity status following the previous season. But Desimone was intent on not only returning the program to varsity status but taking it to a higher level. Among the first steps was the formation of the Cal Golf Committee in 1980, the primary support group for the men s golf team, which helped return the program to varsity status in Soon after, Desimone began crafting Cal into the nationally elite program it has become today. By , Cal was ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation for the first time in the history of the program. One outstanding performance that season was a dramatic comeback at San Diego State s Frank Scott Memorial Tournament. Trailing fourth-ranked Fresno State by 17 shots going into the final round, the Bears rallied to win their first major championship in 17 years. Cal s success that season helped Desimone win Pac- 10 Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors for the first time. During an outstanding campaign, Desimone brought the Bears program to a then-unprecedented level. The team earned its first NCAA postseason berth in 26 seasons by qualifying for an NCAA Regional. Cal competed in the 1964 NCAA Championship, but didn t actually earn its first berth until 1990 at New Mexico State, two years after the NCAA switched to a selection/ qualifying format. Cal played in 13 tournaments that year, placing among the top 10 in all but two, including a then-regular-season school-recordtying three team titles and a tie for third place at the Pac-10 Championship. In addition, the Bears were ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation throughout the season. Ben Furth, the school s first All-American in men s golf and still the only men s golfer in the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame, was a major contributor to the Bears success. The following season came to a disappointing conclusion for Desimone and the Bears. A career-ending back injury to Furth brought to an end the hope that would surpass Cal s great season the preceding year. Off the course, however, another important step in the rebuilding of the program was undertaken. With the generous support of the Cal Golf Committee, a minimal amount of financial aid was offered to incoming student-athletes for the first time in 15 years. This was a critical step because it finally demonstrated the Bears were committed to competing nationally in all respects and gave Desimone a new and critical tool in recruiting. The season was historic as the Bears qualified for their first ever NCAA Championship and posted the best finish in school history at the time and still the fourth-best ever by taking sixth in the event hosted by Ohio State in Columbus. Cal was appearing at the NCAA Championship for the first time since 1964 when there was no selection/qualifying format. The Bears were previously selected to play in their third NCAA Regional in the past six years and came up with a sixth-place showing at the NCAA Regional hosted by New Mexico in Albuquerque after a second-place finish to Arizona State at the Pac-10 Championship. Wi led the way by earning first-team All-American honors and was Cal s first Pac-10 individual champion, while Garrett Larson picked up honorable mention All- American recognition. Cal returned to the NCAA Championship for three consecutive years from , finishing 15th at New Mexico, 16th at Minnesota and 17th at Auburn, respectively. The Bears were tied for fourth at the NCAA Tempe Regional, fourth at the NCAA Tucson Regional and tied for 10th at the NCAA Madera Regional during those three seasons, after finishing fourth, fifth and third, respectively, at the Pac-10 Championship. The team led by All-American Dan Arroyo used the best final round of the day at the NCAA Tempe Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship and then was the final team to make the cut at the national event before eventually settling for its 15th place finish. Arroyo was back again in and led a now-veteran group that also included 2001 U.S. Amateur runner-up Robert Hamilton to its 16thplace national finish. The Bears missed a playoff at the NCAA s to have an opportunity to make the cut by a single shot. The squad featured All-American Han Lee and current associate head coach Walter Chun. The Bears needed a dramatic finish at the 2000 NCAA Regional at Riverbend Golf Club in Madera when Chun birdied his last hole of the tournament to force a three-team playoff for the final spot to advance to the NCAA Championship. The Bears would eventually win the playoff on the third hole, beating Stanford and Idaho. At the NCAA s, Cal would miss making the cut by a single shot while Hamilton would move on in the championship as an individual. All told, Desimone has directed Cal to the NCAA Championship nine (1995, 98, 99, 2000, 04, 10, 11, 12, 13) of the 12 times the Bears have gone in school history, including a current schoolrecord stretch of four in a row. The Bears have played in all 18 of their NCAA Regionals (1990, 93, 95, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 03, 04, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13) under Desimone with a current run of seven straight that is one shy of the school-record eight in a row the Bears put together from Desimone has a total of 59 stroke-play victories in his Cal career. Desimone has coached 13 All-Americans (Arroyo, Furth, Hagy, Homa, Jeff Hood, Kim, Larson, Lee, Mina, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver, Wi) who have earned 18 All-American honors including a schoolrecord five during the season. Hagy, Homa, Kim, Tomasulo and Weaver have all being named twice. Kim, Stalter, Tomasulo and Weaver have all played in the Palmer Cup, while Homa, Kim and Weaver have played in the Walker Cup. All but Tomasulo (2003) participated in Cal has two former players with current PGA TOUR cards in Wi and James Hahn, while Homa Californ Golden Bears and Kim are both on the Web.com TOUR and have played in PGA TOUR events. Wi is in his 11th season playing on the PGA TOUR in 2014 and has finished second five times, most recently at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Hahn, who finished fifth on the final Web.com Tour money list in 2012 to earn his PGA TOUR card, is in his second season on the PGA TOUR in Hahn also has his best career finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, tying for third in Tomasulo has also played on the PGA TOUR, while An, Hamilton, Jesse Ruda and Michael Wilson have competed in PGA TOUR events. Several others have played professionally on other tours, with George Gandranata, Hale, Jeff Hamm, Michael Jensen, Lee and Mina currently active in the professional ranks. The Bears have also had success in the classroom during Desimone s tenure with 13 All-America Scholars (Bill Albers, Scott Carlyle, Chun, Dan Coyle, Furth, Gandranata, Hagy, Hale, Murphy, Stalter, Tomasulo, Weaver, Michael Wilson) that have combined to earn the award 20 times. Albers, Chun, Carlyle, Furth, Hale, Tomasulo and Wilson all earned the honor twice while the Bears had three in the same season for the first time in when Hagy, Stalter and Weaver were all named. Carlyle was also selected a first-team Academic All-American in 2004, while Hagy was a third-team Capital One Academic All-America pick for the Division I men s at large team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). In addition to his role as Cal s head coach, Desimone will add Palmer Cup duties when he will serve as head coach for Team USA when the 2014 event is played at the Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England. Desimone is also the former Manager of the University of California Golf Club ( ), a 130-member Associate Club of the Northern California Golf Association, as well as a former member of the PING Advisory Committee for college golf. In addition, he served two stints on the NCAA Pacific Region Selection Committee for the NCAA Western Regional ( , ) and was on the campuswide NCAA Self-Certification Committee in the mid-1990 s. Desimone played for the Bears men s basketball team as an undergraduate and then served in the United States military before returning to Cal to complete a double major in history and physical education, while also earning his master s degree in physical education. After graduating from Cal, Desimone left Berkeley to become the Director of Athletics at the College Preparatory School in Oakland where he remained until Desimone returned to Cal in the fall of 1979 as the men s golf head coach, and shared responsibilities with both jobs until 1988, when he joined Cal on a full-time basis. Desimone lives in Orinda with his wife, Linda. The couple has two children who live in Minneapolis, Minn. 8 Q&A with Steve Desimone How ready are you and the team for the 2014 spring season? This is a relaxed and experienced group. In addition to their experience at the collegiate level, these are guys that have played at the highest levels of golf such as the Masters, U.S. Open, Palmer Cup and Walker Cup. We will be ready to play this spring. We have one more shot at it with this group of seniors and I like our chances. How is the team s chemistry and work ethic? Our team chemistry is fabulous. Our veteran players are great role models for the younger players and have worked well with them. They work on their games; they work on drills; they work on their attitudes and being positive. The veteran players communicate well with the younger players and let them know what it takes to succeed. Our successes over the last few years run directly back to our work ethic. How will the experience of recent NCAA runs help the team? Four of our top five guys have played in the NCAA Championship, so there will be no surprises for them. They know what they have to do at each level of competition during the regular season, Pac-12 Championship, NCAA Regional, and then both stroke play and match play at the NCAA Championship. Our key is developing a couple of more players that can fill out the lineup in support of them. What has all the recent success at levels beyond the collegiate game by Cal players done for the program? The level of the profile of the program has risen tremendously, and that s certainly given us an added boost in recruiting. The accomplishments of our players are closely followed by recruits and their families. They see what our players are doing and believe that there must be a lot of good things happening in our program. Our goal as a coaching staff is to keep that going so we are consistently one of the best programs in the country. I believe we can keep this program going for a long time. Can you talk about the program s philosophy in terms of recruiting and player development? We ve had a lot of success both in recruiting and developing players. In all honesty, we haven t had a lot of guys ranked highly as junior golfers, but what it takes to succeed at Cal isn t just hitting the golf ball and making a putt. However, it is clear that when you have success you have more and better players interested in what you re doing. We feel like once we get a player here who has some ability and the willingness to learn we can help to develop him into an upper-level collegiate player. How important are academics at Cal? We want a program where players can play in a nationally-competitive golf program and also access the great educational opportunities at Cal, and that s what we have. We ve been among the top teams in academics at Cal and nationally for several years. It s part of our culture and we make that expectation known right up front to our recruits and their families. It s pretty impressive when you have a situation like this year with three returning All-America Scholars in Brandon Hagy, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver that are about to graduate from the Haas School of Business. It s tough to get any better than that. Simply, what does it mean to be a Cal golfer? It means you ve accepted the challenge and committed yourself to being the best studentathlete and teammate you can possibly be. What is your coaching style? It s an open and collaborative style. Our job is to teach our players how to play the game. We talk with them a lot about the strengths and weaknesses of their games and use statistics to back that up. The analytical part of the game is crucial. We discuss the different parts of their games openly and in great detail. We talk about what they need to do to improve. By the time we re done with that, their game is right in front of us. I ve always been a believer that if the players buy into what you re trying to teach and understand what issues their games have, then they have a chance to improve and develop to the best of their abilities. What did you tell your players at the end of the season? I told them that it was my great honor to have coached absolutely the best team in the history of college golf and that someday they would understand just how great their accomplishments were. I want the players from that team to be able to carry that around with them the rest of their lives. What is the impact of losing players like Max Homa and Michael Kim to the professional ranks? There are almost always transitions. Max and Michael were great Golden Bears and we wish them the very best. We look forward to watching them on the PGA TOUR over the next 30 years. Their accomplishments have secured their great legacies at Cal. Can you talk about the annual Cal Golf Tournament and its role in your fundraising efforts? Our annual Cal Golf Tournament at Orinda Country Club is the single most important noncompetitive day of the year for our program and the cornerstone of our fundraising. We raise roughly a third of the funds necessary to operate the team during the year from that one event. It is a critical day for us, and we can t function without it. It s a fun day. We call it a tournament, but it is really a party and celebration of Cal men s golf. When you have as many returnees to the tournament as we Head Coach Steve Desimone do, you know people are having a lot of fun and believe in what we re doing. They believe in the product we have, which in the end is the young men in this program and how they re playing and how they re achieving academically. It s gratifying for us that we get that kind of support. What is the Cal Golf Committee and how important is it to the program? The origins of the committee go back to 1980 and it has expanded beautifully. The committee is primarily responsible for funding our program. There should be no doubt that without the committee and guys like Ed Arnold, Russ Bigelow, Frank Brunk, Joffa Dale, Ken Lloyd, Bob Scuitto, and so many other friends of Cal golf, there would not be a Cal men s golf program. This was all the Cal Golf Committee. Yes, I ve been the coach for almost 35 years and from a programmatic standpoint I can say with a smile that things have gone well. But without the support of the Cal Golf Committee and its energy, none of this would have happened, and what a loss that would have been. No Charlie Wi, no Peter Tomasulo, no Ben Furth, no Walter Chun, no Max Homa, no Michael Kim, no national championship, no All-Americans, no All-America Scholars, the team would not have existed, and on and on. To think that none of this would have existed at Cal is an awful, tragic thought. No one knows with certainty if we ll ever win another national championship, but I do know we re going to be competing for more and I do know that our student-athletes are getting a great education. They re playing really good golf and they re growing as people. All of that runs directly back to the Cal Golf Committee. It s one of the truly great success stories in the history of Cal Athletics. The program is currently in an endowment campaign. Can you discuss the importance of that campaign? It s exciting and will kick even more into gear in the near future. We re about halfway to our goal of $10 million, which would solidify the program s sustainability forever. It s important to keep on pushing to reach that goal Men's Golf Annual Report

9 Walter Chun Associate Head Coach 10th Season Cal, 2001 A former Cal golf standout, Walter Chun is in his 10th season on the Golden Bears coaching staff in and his fifth as associate head coach, with the Bears making the NCAA Championship in each of his first four campaigns in his current role after a previous five-year absence. Chun was promoted to the position he now holds in September 2009 after five seasons as an assistant coach. He was also as an administrative assistant when Cal won the NCAA title in Walter and I are in this together, head coach Steve Desimone said. We talk constantly about what we re doing and how we re doing it. We re always looking to find ways to improve and be a better team. He s been a tremendous asset, ally and friend. I could never say enough good things about Walter. Cal set a modern-era NCAA win record in with 12 victories in its 14 stroke-play tournaments, eclipsing the record previously held by the Oklahoma State team. The Golden Bears have won 21 of 31 stroke-play events from the season through the fall of 2013 and finished in the top five in all 31, as well as four match-play events during the period. Despite falling in the NCAA match-play semifinals to Illinois after a quarterfinal win against Arizona State, Cal remained No. 1 in all three final national polls with both the Golfweek and Golfstat rankings released following the NCAA Championship and the Golf World/Nike Golf poll prior to the NCAA Championship. Cal was in the top spot for nearly the entire season. The Bears had several firsts in , including an NCAA match-play victory over San Diego State in the quarterfinals, a trip to match play at the NCAA Championship, NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles, a then-school-record six victories, and top-five finishes in all 12 strokeplay events and 15 tournaments overall. Chun has played a huge role in the team s recent run of success through his recruiting and player development capabilities. Among a long list of players he has helped recruit who have turned into top-notch golfers are Brandon Hagy (All-America Scholar, Haskins Award Watch List), Stephen Hale (All-America Scholar, All-Pac-10), Max Homa (First-Team All-American, NCAA Champion, Pac-12 Champion, U.S. Open, Walker Cup), Michael Kim (First-Team All-American, Palmer Cup, Unanimous National Player of the Year, U.S. Open, Walker Cup), Eric Mina (All- American, 2010 Pac-10 Champion), Joël Stalter (All-America Scholar, Second-Team All-American) and Michael Weaver (All-America Scholar, First- Team All-American, Masters, Palmer Cup, Walker Cup). He also recruited Byeong-Hun An after he became the youngest champion in the history of the U.S. Amateur at age 17 in Chun has been recognized nationally for his coaching exploits. He was honored with the Jan Strickland Award as the nation s top assistant coach for his work during the season. In June of 2009, he served as a Team USA assistant coach for the Palmer Cup. Chun is in his 17th season associated with the Cal men s golf program since he began his playing career for the Bears in He was a two-time team captain while competing on three occasions at the NCAA West Regional ( ) and once at the NCAA Championship (2000). Chun has also qualified for two U.S. Amateur Championships, the first in 1999 at Pebble Beach and the second in 2002 at Oakland Hills Country Club. Chun received his bachelor s degree from Cal s Haas School of Business in 2001, and his master s from Cal s Graduate School of Education in He was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection (2000, 2001, 2002) and a two-time All-America Scholar (2001, 2002). He and his wife, Grace, live in Hayward along with their son, William. Californ Golden Bears Gene Bakkum Volunteer Assistant Coach 12th Season UC Davis, 2000 Gene Bakkum is in his 12th season at Cal in and his 10th as a volunteer assistant after a previous two-year stint as assistant coach ( ). Prior to arriving at Cal, he served for two seasons as assistant men s golf coach for his alma mater UC Davis ( ), helping the Aggies to a No. 1 ranking in Division II men s golf and back-to-back NCAA West Regional appearances. He is also currently in his 10th year as assistant director of instruction at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, and has instructed at the Nike Jr. Golf camps in Pebble Beach, where he also served as assistant director. Bakkum was previously the director of the Nike Coaches All- Star Golf Academy in Phoenix, and has been affiliated with PGA of America since Gene has done some really great things with our players over the years, head coach Steve Desimone said. 10 CAL MEN'S GOLf outlook The Cal men s golf team believes the third time is a charm. The Golden Bears have been agonizingly close to a second national championship each of the last two seasons before semifinal losses at the NCAA Championship have left them tied for third twice. But head coach Steve Desimone likes his team s chances to finally win it all again in The ultimate goal is an NCAA championship, Desimone said. We all dream that we re going to be in a position to do that again this year just like we have been each of the last two seasons. We ve had some heartbreaks the last two years, but that s the nature of the game. We re knocking on the door again, and we believe that we are going to have that opportunity at the end of the season. The senior All-American trio of Brandon Hagy, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver is a big reason why. After being contributors to what many called the best team in the history of college golf in when Cal set an NCAA record with 12 wins in 14 stroke-play events, the trio is now clearly the focal point of the squad with last year s unanimous National Player of the Year Michael Kim and NCAA champion Max Homa off to the professional ranks. In addition to their All-American honors last season, all three were All-America Scholars, GCAA/ PING Division I All-West Region and All-Pac-12 selections. Their combined collegiate accomplishments also include four individual victories, 15 top-five finishes and 20 top-10 showings. Weaver finished the season ranked as high as No. 11 nationally, while Stalter was No. 12 and Hagy No. 19, all according to Golfweek. They want to improve on everything they did last year individually and gear themselves towards winning an NCAA title, Desimone said. They re tri-captains this year and have really been leaders since the moment they arrived. Their immediate future is this season, the Pac-12 Championship and the NCAA Championship. Especially with most of school in the rear view mirror, they will have an excellent opportunity to finish their college careers on a triumphant ride. In , all three are on the Ben Hogan Award Watch List given annually to the nation s top amateur player and nominees for the Byron Nelson Award that encompasses excellence in golf, academics, community service and character. Despite all of their accomplishments there is one thing they have yet to attain that they value more than anything. The last two years, we ve come up a little short in the national semifinals, Hagy said. I think we ve learned from those two experiences. It s all about business this year, all the hard work we ve put in, all the practice hours we ll be ready. I think we re all looking forward to that opportunity Men's Golf Annual Report Make no mistake about it, there couldn t be a better scenario to end the season and their collegiate careers than finding a way to carry that trophy out of Prairie Dunes in late May, Desimone added. A lot of good things have to happen, but this team is capable of that. When you look at what the possibilities are the great returning players that we have along with some of our young developing players we have a real shot at this and the guys know it. Cal started making strides towards attaining its goal with a strong 2013 fall campaign when the Bears won three of five events to make it 21 victories in 31 stroke-play tournaments over the past two and a half campaigns. Hagy will begin the spring slate with the most impressive credentials on the squad as the No. 3 player listed on the Haskins Award Midseason Watch List for the honor given annually to the nation's top player in collegiate golf. He led the way in the fall with top-10 finishes in each of the team s five events, including four top-five showings and his second career victory at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. Hagy finished the fall with a stroke average and was even better in September when he started the season with top-three finishes in each of his three events, posted a stroke

11 average and was named the Pac-12 Men s Golfer of the Month for the second time in his career. Stalter came on at the end of the fall with a victory at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational before tying for fifth at the prestigious Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in his final two events. He finished the fall with a stroke average to rank second on the team behind Hagy. Weaver missed the season-opening Gopher Invitational while playing in the Walker Cup for the victorious Team USA and when he returned posted top-10 finishes in his first two events of the campaign, with a second-place showing at the Saint Mary s Invitational and a 10th-place finish at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. He was tied for 13th or better in each of his four fall outings for Cal and also tied for 17th competing as an individual at the Sun Bowl Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic. Kim also played for Team USA in the Walker Cup and was with the Bears for three events in the fall before turning professional in December during the middle of his junior season. His top finish for the Bears was tied for eighth at the Saint Mary s Invitational and he was also fourth playing along with Weaver at the College All-America Golf Classic. The key for Cal in the spring of 2014 could be solidifying the remainder of the lineup beyond the All-American trio with several players competing for open spots. We have a lot of depth, Desimone said. We ll be watching guys like Shotaro Ban, Pace Johnson, Keelan Kilpatrick, Andrew Morgan, Cameron Shaw and James Yoon very carefully to see how they develop and are able to blend with our senior All- American trio. These guys are working hard and battling to find a spot in the lineup. Consequently, their games will be sharp and they should be able to give us what we are looking for, which is consistently good play. Pace Johnson Brandon Hagy Johnson, a fellow senior who redshirted in , had the best performance in the fall with his back-to-back third-place finishes and a stroke average that ranked behind only Hagy, Stalter and Weaver. Other top candidates to get into the lineup include sophomores Ban, Kilpatrick and Yoon, as well as redshirt freshmen Morgan and Shaw. Ban had the most impressive fall of the group with a stroke average over nine rounds as he played in three of five events. Californ Golden Bears The remainder of the team includes sophomore Walker Huddy and true freshmen Jay Burlison, Alex Helgans, Clayton Madey and Alexander Wilson. All are expected to redshirt in Cal began the fall as the nation s top-ranked team but quickly fell out of the No. 1 spot. The Bears finished fourth playing without Kim and Weaver while they were at the Walker Cup during the season-opening Gopher Invitational at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. Hagy led the way with a second-place finish one shot away from the top while Stalter tied for 11th. The Bears then won the first of three straight events in dominating fashion by a combined total of 71 strokes with a 30-shot victory at the Saint Mary s Invitational played at Bayonet & Blackhorse in Seaside as Weaver and Hagy finished second and third. Hagy then led the Bears to a 19-stroke victory at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational hosted by Ohio State at OSU Golf Club s Scarlet Course by winning individual medalist honors for the second time in his career. Johnson and Ban had their best collegiate showings with third and sixth-place finishes, respectively. Weaver s 10th place outing gave Cal four players in the top 10. The Bears were 22-stroke winners in their next event at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational cohosted by Cal and San Francisco at the Sonoma Golf Club. Stalter was individual medalist for the third time in his career while Johnson matched his third-place showing from the Jack Nicklaus Invitational and Hagy tied for fourth. The Bears finished the fall by taking third at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational hosted by Texas Tech and UCF at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Fla. The field featured eight of the nation s top 25 teams according to Golfweek and six NCAA quarterfinalists from the Men's Golf Annual Report 9

12 campaign. Stalter and Hagy were both in the top 10, tied for fifth and tied for eighth. The squad begins the spring portion of its schedule January looking to win the Arizona Intercollegiate for the second time in school history and first since The event has been one of the few on the Bears schedule which they have not won during their hot stretch since the beginning of the campaign. The tournament has moved to a new venue for a second consecutive year in 2014 and will be played at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Just over three weeks later the Bears will be looking for their tournament-record fourth straight victory at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate (February 19-21) hosted by Hawai i. The event will move to the Wailua Golf Course on the island of Kauai this season. The Bears will next attempt to defend their title March 7-9 at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Invitational hosted by UNLV at the Southern Highlands Golf Club against what is annually the top field in the nation before taking their second of three spring trips to the Tucson area to play March in the NIT Invitational hosted by Arizona at the Omni Tucson National Resort s Catalina Course. After nearly three weeks out of competition surrounding and during spring break, Cal will close out its regular season over a period of nine days beginning with its inaugural trip to the Aggie Invitational (April 5-6) hosted by Texas A&M at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, followed by the Western Intercollegiate (April 12-13) hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. The Bears won the latter for only the second time in school history and the first time since 1950 last season. The postseason begins Apr with the Pac-12 Championship to be hosted by Arizona and played at The Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Joël Stalter Ariz. The Bears are the two-time defending champion of the event. Cal won its first conference title in dramatic fashion in 2012 when Hagy forced a playoff with Oregon by sinking a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and then clinched the victory with a 25-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole. Last season, Cal cruised to a ninestroke win at the Pac-12 Championship with Homa the third individual medalist of the event in school history, joining Charlie Wi (1995) and Eric Mina (2010). NCAA postseason competition starts May with Regional action at a site yet to be determined. The six possible sites are Auburn, Ala. (Auburn University Club, Host Auburn); Columbia, Mo. (The Club at Old Hawthorne, Host Missouri); Eugene, Ore. (Eugene Country Club, Host Oregon); Raleigh, N.C. (Lonnie Pole Golf Course, Host North Carolina State); San Antonio, Tex. (Briggs Ranch Golf Club UTSA); and Sugar Grove, Ill. (Rich Harvest Farms, Host Northern Illinois). Cal has won its first two NCAA Regional titles in school history during the last two seasons at Stanford in 2012 and Pullman in The Bears have qualified for NCAA Regional action 18 times in school history, including each of the last seven seasons to rank one shy of the school record. A top-five NCAA Regional finish would give Cal a ticket to the NCAA Championship for a fifth consecutive season and 10th time in school history with the Bears current streak of four appearances in a row already their best ever. This year s event will be hosted by Wichita State and played May at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The format of the NCAA Championship will change this season with the introduction of live television on Golf Channel for the first time. Eight teams from the first three days of stroke play will still advance to match play but the matches will be played over the final two days instead of three. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be conducted May 27 with the championship match the following day. On the fourth day of competition, the top 40 individuals from the first three days of stroke play will golf another 18 holes to determine the individual champion.
