1 Volume 2 Issue 10 October 2012 Dear Juniors and Parents, Gateway PGA Wild Horse Creek Rd. Suite 110 Chesterfield, MO Phone: Alex Anderson Junior Golf Director Ali Wells, PGA Director of Foundation Programs & Player Development Page Content 2 Growing The Game Junior Style! 3 Fitness Tip by Barb Michaels 4 Golf sale 5-7 Tournament Recaps Thank you to everyone who has continued to support competitive golf through the Gateway PGA. It is your enthusiasm that drives us to expand the GJPGA and make every event better than its predecessor. We could not do it without YOU! This fall season has been quite exciting with great turnouts and exceptional scoreboard results. The outing at Mid Rivers put competitor s course management skills to the test. Negotiating the multiple hazards on every hole was crucial to player success. This past weekend at Tapawingo juniors braved the toughest conditions of the fall season. The difficult woodlands course tested each player s course management skills, and rewarded smart decision making. Congratulations once again to all of our medalists so far. Keep up the great work! With only 3 more events this season, now is the time to show us what you re made of. High school golf came to a close this past week for Illinois Boys and Girls and Missouri Girls. It was exciting to see so many familiar names at the top of the leaderboard. We had several junior members that made state appearances. A few individuals had spectacular finishes. On the Missouri Side, the Gateway Junior PGA was well represented with six of the top ten finishers being a part of our program. A huge congratulations to 2012 Missouri Girls Class 1 and Class 2 State Champions Brooke Cusumano and Amanda Kim! Brooke shot to capture the state title and Amanda shot Class 1 State Runner Up, Jordan Wolf, is also a Gateway Junior PGA member. Jordan shot to place second in state. Taylor Hayes, Abby Schroeder, Logan Otter, Mikala Jungmeyer, Emily Goldenstein, and Tess McCorkle all had top ten state finishes. Way to Go Ladies! The Illinois side also had an impressive showing. For the Illinois Girls, Shawn Rennegarbe (Class A) shot 68 on the final day for a Second place state finish. For ClassAA Emilee Flaugher shot 76 to finish 7 th and Miranda Lidisky shot 77 to finish in 9 th place. Congratulations to Blaine Buente who was the Boy s Class 2A State Runner Up firing a 73. Charles Hawn and Michael Johnson also had great 5 th place finishes. Congratulations to all of our juniors on an outstanding high school season! Be sure to read Barb Michael s article on how to fuel your body throughout your round. As athletes your diet is crucial to your performance! This year the Gateway PGA is allowing all of our juniors free admission to the Gateway PGA Golf Sale. Details can be found on page four. I look forward to seeing you out on the course. Practice Hard! Sincerely, Alex Anderson Director of Junior Golf 1
2 So how was your golf season? Did you accomplish the goals you set at the beginning of the year? Did you have fun? I hope you answered yes to the last two questions, especially the last. If not, PGA Professionals offer opportunities for you to work on your game, take lessons, and prepare yourself to accomplish next year s goals, plus you have fun! One opportunity that is offered throughout the Gateway Section is the PGA Sports Academy. The PGA Sports Academy is a fun, interactive program with the objective being to develop core golfers who will continue to play socially or competitively, based on each junior s desire. The progressive curriculum teaches golf while developing long-term athletic development.. The PGA Sports Academy has three levels that follow a curriculum which includes: Sportsmanship, Rules and Etiquette Golf Skills Fitness and Nutrition Golf and "Near Golf" Experiences Golf and Physical Assessments Despite the winter season, many facilities remain open if weather permits. I encourage everyone to visit their local PGA Professional and see what off-season instructional programs they offer. While you re there, ask about the PGA Sports Academy! I guarantee you will have fun and improve your game! Below is a list of PGA Facilities who held Sports Academy Programming this year: Berry Hill Golf Course Cardinal Creek Golf Course Country Club of St. Albans Falls Golf Club The First Tee Driving Range Golf Body Performance Center Lake Forest Country Club Lockhaven Country Club Oak Brook Golf Club Paradise Valley Golf Course Quincy Country Club Red Hawk Country Club Stonewolf Golf Club Sunset Hills Country Club Westborough Country Club Happy Golfing! 3 Barb Michaels Optimal Lifestyles, Inc. Fuel Your Game for Better Performance Your body is your golf machine. When your body is running well, you play well. Registered dietitian and nutritionist, Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD, says that a poor diet can lead to poor form on the golf course which may come from lack of energy and can lead to injuries. It s time to treat golf as a fitness activity and eat for performance. People are struggling with how to eat well for sports, for exercise, for weight control and health. As golfers, we want to learn to eat well when under game stress and for active lifestyles. As we talk about fueling for performance, where do we start? It takes time management and good planning to fuel well and responsibly. The best energy booster is breakfast. If you are playing a round of golf, definitely start with a full gas tank. It improves overall quality of diet, prevents the need for sugar fixes, it enhances performance. Make sure you get adequate carbohydrates and proteins when you fuel. We need carbohydrates to fuel our muscles and we need protein to build our muscles. Eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and low fat dairy/calcium rich foods and a little bit of healthy fat on a daily basis. Take in enough fluids to prevent dehydration. Drink before you get thirsty. If you eat healthier you will have more energy, perform better on the course. In addition, weight management becomes easier. Examples of good whole grain choices are wheat, rice, oats and corn. Good fruit choices are oranges, grapefruit melons, bananas, strawberries and kiwi. Vegetables that hit the target are broccoli, spinach, carrots, peppers, tomatoes and squash. In addition to starting with a good breakfast, it helps to fuel during the active part of the day. It is not true that more is better. Quality not quantity is what we want for performance. Here are some tips for better energy: Eat before you get hungry. Don t let yourself get too hungry because you are more likely to get careless about what you eat and treat yourself for having a hectic day rather than fueling for performance. Divide your food into four meals a day because most bodies get hungry about every four hours. If you don t fuel well you end up with an inadequate diet and fatigue. Think about it. You want to perform your best for your golf game. Be responsible and fuel your body on a regular schedule. If you need a food coach, find a sports nutritionist in your area.
