The Westchester Seniors will be holding a drawing for an all-inclusive getaway to The Landings on Skidaway Island, outside Savannah, Georgia. This drawing is to benefit the Folds of Honor. 2 SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Well, the winner of last year's season-long fund-raiser for the MGA Foundation sure took full advantage of his prize and did Westchester Seniors proud in the process. Salem Golf Club's John McKee just completed four all-expense-paid days at the Landings on Skidaway Island accompanied by three Salem club-mates (present and former), who shocked their hosts by playing Tournament Tees each time as they sampled four of the Landing's six courses--showing ambition rare, to put it mildly, among players of "a certain age." What's more, McKee holed out for an eagle two on a signature hole at the Landings' Deer Creek course, a Tom Fazio layout about to host the pros of the Web.Com tour in its newest event, the Savannah Golf Championship. McKee found the bottom of the cup with his wedge shot on Deer Creek's 5th, a tantalizing par four around and over a lagoon ("Schooner Cove") where the pros will be dared to go for the green off the tee while a crowd and webcam ( look on. That's McKee's colorful crew posing later by the flagstick of Deer Creek's par three 17th hole: he's in green next to Mark Salis (in white), another of Salem's regular participants in WSGA events, and Dr. Robert Silverman (in pink), who now lives in Chapel Hill N.C. The tall fellow in red is Tom Stapleton, a young (by senior standards) bomber who plans to join the WSGA this year and is sure to be a contender in any event he enters. McKee finished his notable round by teeing off over the marsh on Deer Creek's 520-yard par five closing hole and making par after successfully clearing the marsh a second time with his approach to the green. The four day Landings stay to benefit the MGA's caddie scholarship fund was arranged by local residents Paul Lieberman, a familiar figure in Westchester Seniors play (from Bonnie Briar), and the current Met senior champion Allan Small, a former MGA president who relocated to the Landings from New Jersey. The second night of their visit, Lieberman (in red) had the Salem delegation over for drinks at his home, where they toasted the trip before the blooming azaleas and his light-hearted back-yard sign (with a touch of New York humor) along the Landings' Palmetto course, the site of a Monday qualifier for the Web.com championship. Joining the group (second from the right) was Richard Burke, the unofficial historian of the Landings and (many decades ago) a high school friend of McKee's on Long Island. Burke stunned the golfing crew by reporting that McKee was, "in his day," a champion miler. The best news is that the Landings trip again will help raise funds. This year we will be raising funds for the Folds of Honor. This organization provides educational scholarships for the children and spouses of fallen and disabled veterans. We will once again help our charity with a three night stay for four in a private home, including all meals and golf on the community's six courses, use of the two deep-water marinas, five pools, 30 miles of biking and hiking trails, the fitness center, tennis and 200 fishing lagoons...all just a half hour from historic downtown Savannah. Better yet, it costs nothing for a chance to become this season's John McKee: all WSGA members automatically get an entry in the season-ending drawing for the trip each time they enter one of our events.
