About The Academy Army Golf The mission of the U.S. Military Academy is to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country; professional growth throughout a career as an officer in the U.S. Army; and a lifetime of selfless service to the Nation. Founded on March 16, 1802, the Academy is now celebrating its Bicentennial. But West Point s role in America s history dates back even earlier to the Revolutionary War, when both sides realized the strategic importance of the commanding plateau on the west bank of the Hudson River. Gen. George Washington considered West Point to be the most strategic position in America. He personally selected Thaddeus Kosciuszko, one of the heroes of Saratoga, to design the fortifications in 1778 after problems arose with French engineers originally placed in charge of the design. In 1779, General Washington transferred his headquarters to West Point. Continental soldiers built forts, batteries and defensive barriers. A 100-ton iron chain was extended across the Hudson to control river traffic. Today, several links from that chain are arranged at Trophy Point as a reminder of West Point s original fortifications. In 1802 President Thomas Jefferson signed the legislation establishing the U.S. Military Academy to create an institution devoted to the arts and sciences of warfare. This effectively eliminated America s wartime reliance on foreign engineers and artillerists. West Point became the nation s first engineering school and served as the model for engineering programs which were eventually established at other colleges. Col. Sylvanus Thayer, the Father of the Military Academy, served as Superintendent from 1817 through He upgraded academic standards, instilled military discipline and emphasized honorable conduct. Early graduates were largely responsible for the construction of the nation s initial railway lines, bridges, harbors, and roads. Although the curriculum maintains its focus on engineering, in recent decades the program of instruction has markedly changed, providing cadets a selection of more than 20 majors. This tradition of academic and military excellence, guided by a demanding standard of moral and ethical conduct, remains the cornerstone of the West Point experience. It is said at West Point that much of the history we teach was made by people we taught. The Academy has produced famous leaders throughout its illustrious past... Civil War Generals Grant, Sherman, Lee and Jackson, and Pershing, the senior American commander in World War I, to name but a few. In more recent conflicts MacArthur and Ridgway in Korea, Westmoreland and Abrams in Vietnam, and Schwarzkopf in Desert Storm West Pointers were in command. Academy graduates have also excelled in air and space exploration, and countless others went on from military service to be leaders in medicine, law, business, religion and sciences. Since it s founding nearly two centuries ago, the Military Academy fulfills the same mission as it always has... to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets. It accomplishes this mission by developing cadets in three essential areas: intellectual, physical and military. These developmental paths are balanced and fully integrated into the daily life of each young man and woman at the Academy Patriot League Champions

At West Point, character development is not an isolated program under the auspices of one agency; rather, it is integrated across the spectrum of the West Point experience: the academic, military and physical programs. It is essential to the development of leaders of our Army that all activities at West Point are conducted within an environment of high moral and ethical standards. At West Point, cadets learn about and prepare for the ethical demands of officership by living under the dictates of an Honor Code, which states: A Cadet shall not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. Its purpose is to foster a commitment to moral-ethical excellence and an insight into the broader, more comprehensive professional military ethic. Intellectual growth is fostered through an academic curriculum that provides a broad liberal education in the arts and sciences. The electives program builds upon the foundation of the core, allowing cadets to develop even greater competence in selected areas. In addition, the fields-of-study and majors nurture the development of creativity, critical thinking, and self-directed learning, essential characteristics of 21st Century officers. The four-year academic experience leads to a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Army. Physical development is achieved through a rigorous athletic and physical education program. Each cadet participates at the intercollegiate, club or intramural level each semester. This readies the cadet for the physical demands of military life and helps teach good judgment and self-discipline, even while under mental and physical stress. Military development begins with the cadet s first day at West Point. Most military training takes place during the summer, with new cadets undergoing Cadet Basic Training, or Beast Barracks, their first year, followed the second summer by Cadet Field Training. Cadets spend their third and fourth summers serving in active Army units around the world; attending specialty training such as airborne, air assault or northern warfare, or helping to train the first- and second-year cadets. The Cadet Leader Development System seeks to give the cadets increasing responsibility until they are ready to receive their commissions and assume their duties as leaders in today s Army. Moral and ethical values guide cadets throughout their four years at West Point. Commitment to the Academy s Bedrock Values, based on integrity and respect for the dignity of others, begins on the first day. Integrity is reflected in the Cadet Honor Code which states: A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. Respect denotes that cadets treat others with the same respect and dignity they themselves would expect. At West Point, it is not enough to train leaders they must be leaders of character. Admission is keenly competitive and is open to young men and women from all states and territories and from every socioeconomic level. Prospective cadets must receive a nomination by a member of Congress or from the Department of the Army. The Academy seeks candidates who possess a record of success in academics, athletics and leadership indicative of a well-rounded individual. Although the life of a cadet is demanding, there remains an array of club activities ranging from golf, skiing, sailing, ice skating and orienteering to such organizations as the cadet radio station, Habitat for Humanity and Big Brother-Big Sister. Additionally, the U.S. Military Academy hosts a Special Olympics event each spring. Today s Military Academy is a vastly dif- Character Development ferent institution from the small academy legislated into being by Congress in Originally just 1,800 acres, the Academy has grown to more than 16,000 acres. The first graduating class numbered just two men; today s classes graduate more than 900 new officers annually, both men and women, who are prepared for leadership roles within the Army. With the expansion of knowledge and the changing needs of the Army and the nation, life at West Point has changed to keep pace. Ever mindful of its rich heritage, the U.S. Military Academy is developing leaders for tomorrow, and its focus remains the national needs of the 21st century NCAA Central Regional Participants 3

Admission To The Academy Read about West Point and the role of the officer in the Army; learn all there is to know about it. Pursue an offer of admission if what West Point has to offer seems to be a good match for your abilities and aspirations, and you have the desire to give the Army your best effort as an officer leading soldiers. Peterson s Guide ranks West Point as one of the most competitive colleges in the nation. There are approximately 12,000 applications each year for less than 1200 cadet vacancies. Applicants compete for vacancies and are evaluated in three areas: academics, physical aptitude, and demonstrated leadership ability. Cadets vacancies are allocated to each member of Congress and to the representatives to Congress from Washington, D.C., Guam, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Mariana Islands. Many foreign governments are also invited to nominate cadets under a Department of State program, so the student population at West Point is incredibly diverse. The following is an overview of the first three steps to West Point. Further information on the admissions process and on orientation visits is available by calling the Director of Admissions at (845) You can also request information on admissions and on official NCAA visits from one of the West Point athletic team coaches. Determine if you meet entrance requirements Minimum requirements for entrance to West Point are: you must be at least 17 but not yet 23 on the day you enter West Point; you must be a U.S. citizen at the time you enter (except for foreign cadets as noted above); you must not be married or pregnant, nor have a legal obligation to support a child or other dependent. Additionally, you must meet academic, medical and physical qualifications. To be considered academically qualified, you should have an aboveaverage high school or college academic record and strong performance on the standardize American College Testing (ACT) Assessment Program Exam or the College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). Additionally, you should take a strong college preparatory program in high school, including four years of English, four years of math (including trigonometry), two years of laboratory science, two years of a foreign language, and one year of U.S. history. To be medically qualified, you must be in good physical and mental health and pass a medical exam administered by the Department of Defense. To meet physical qualification standards, you must demonstrate above-average strength, endurance and agility. Your high school coach or physical education instructor administers a Physical Aptitude Exam to measure these traits. The exam consists of: pull-ups for men/flexed arm hang for women, basketball throw from the kneeling position, standing long jump, two minutes of pushups and 300-yard shuttle run. Apply for a nomination A nomination is the legal authority for West Point to consider a candidate for admission. Nominations are available from every member of Congress and from the representatives to Congress listed above. At a minimum, you should apply to your two senators, your representative, and the Vice President. Nominations are also available from the President for children of career military personnel, and from the Secretary of the Army for enlisted soldiers in the Regular Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard; for children of deceased or 100% disabled veterans; children of persons awarded the Medal of Honor; and students in Army ROTC, Army Junior ROTC, or Navy, Air Force, or Marine Junior ROTC units which have been designated as Honor Units with Distinction. Start a file at West Point West Point will start your candidate file upon receipt of a completed Precandidate Questionnaire. You may obtain a questionnaire by writing to: Director of Admissions, U.S. Military Academy, 606 Thayer Road, West Point, NY , or by calling (845) Automated admissions information is also available at this number. Additionally, you can request a questionnaire electronically from the Academy s World Wide Web page at: Further information about the admissions process and the courses of instruction are also available on the web pages. Finally, if you are at least a high school junior and are sincerely interested in attending West Point and serving as an officer in the U.S. Army, you should talk to your school guidance counselor. Each counselor s office has a copy of the latest West Point catalog and information to help you with your college choices Patriot League Champions

West Point Golf Course The West Point Golf Course is just one of Army s state-of-the-art sporting facilities. It is also the place the Black Knight golf team calls home. The course is a par 70, 6530-yard course nestled in the rolling hills of the Hudson River Valley. One of the most scenic courses in New York, it was built in 1946 and later redesigned by famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. Recently, the course closed for two seasons for further renovations. The West Point Golf Course is a par 70, 6530-yard course built in The West Point Golf Course re-opened in April 1997, in time to host the Black Knight Invitational, Army s final tournament of its spring season. Last season Army hosted the West Point/Habecker Invitational in the fall and welcomed the Patriot League Championship back to West Point in the spring. In 2002, The West Point Golf Course added its latest feature, the driving range. We are very fortunate to have such a great course in our backyard, said Head Coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. With the addition of the driving range and the short game area, we have one of the best facilities in the Northeast. In the fall of 2002, the Black Knights look forward to hosting many local teams in the Black Knight Fall Classic. 8 Head Coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger Army Golf Entering his 13th season at Army, Jimmy Ray Clevenger has emerged as one of the top golf coaches in the Northeast. In his time at Army, Clevenger s teams have won seven Patriot League Tournament titles and participated in five NCAA Regional Championships. Clevenger has also guided eight golfers to NCAA All-District II selections, two players to the NCAA All-District I team and 22 players to the All-Patriot League Golf Team. Overall, Clevenger s teams have won 22 team tournament titles including two wins during the season. Under Clevengers leadership, Jimmy Lee was named to the All-New England Team in 1996 and Ryan Hazelton was bestowed the honor in 2001 and In 2001, Blayne Smith was the first golfer under Clevenger to be named to the Academic All- America squad and Pete Mangold, the 2002 Patriot League Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year, became the latest Black Knight to be bestowed the honor. Eighteen Black Knight players have won individual titles during Clevenger s tenure at Army. In , Clevenger s first season on the banks of the Hudson River, Army captured the Black Knight Invitational, the Patriot League championship and the District II Championship. The triumph at the districts qualified the Black Knights for their third straight NCAA East Regional bid. Clevenger was named Patriot League Coach of the Year in 1993 following Army s fifth consecutive NCAA regional appearance and an impressive win at the Princeton Invitational. In 12 seasons at Army, Clevenger has defeated arch-rival Navy in duals matches six times. Rebuilding the Army squad to its previous stature, Clevenger s team won both the West Point/Habecker Invitational and the Patriot League Tournament by a startling 29 strokes. Army s top five golfers all finished in the top 10 of the individual standings at the league championships and were named to the All-Patriot League Team. For his work, Clevenger was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time in the 12-year history of the conference. With the league win, Army received the Patriot League s automatic bid to the NCAA Regional where the Black Knights finished 26th at the Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark., May 16-18, Clevenger enjoyed his share of success as a player as well. He was a four-time all-conference selection, district champion and an all-state performer in high school. In 1978, Clevenger won the Missouri High School State Championship after carding successive 68s. Clevenger is a 1982 graduate of Central Missouri State University where he was a participant in four NCAA Division II championships. With the Mules, Clevenger was named all-conference four times and captured eight career tournament titles. Clevenger s standout collegiate career was topped off with All-American honors following his senior season. After graduation, Clevenger spent three-years in the U.S. Army following his father s military footsteps. His father was a veteran of the Vietnam and Korean wars, and he retired with 20 years of active service in the U.S. Air Force. The younger Clevenger has served on the Golf Coaches Association of America s Ethics Committee, was chairman of the District II all-district selection committee and was District II and District I chairman Patriot League Champions

Team Information Clevenger s Coaching Philosophy My philosophy in coaching is very simple, and I call the following items my Big 10 Priority List. I list them in order of importance: 1. Make sure you graduate. 2. Treat everyone on the team the same. 3. Lead the team by example. 4. We win as a team and lose as a team. 5. Army golfers always give 100 percent and never quit. 6. I always play the best players, through qualifying rounds. That means that even freshmen can reach the varsity. 7. Turn each player into the best golfer he can be. 8. Make each golfer learn his strengths and weaknesses. Then turn those weaknesses into strengths. 9. Teach each player the power of consistency. 10. Set goals as a team and enjoy the college golf experience, because it only happens once in a lifetime. Army Support Staff Col. 11 Season Outlook Revitalize the Army golf program is what the team looks to continue. Coming off one of the most successful years in recent Academy history, the Black Knights want to rebuild the program to the successful state of the early 1990s. The squad took the first step in the revitalization of the program with a trip to the 2002 NCAA Central Regional after a seven-year absence from the national spotlight. May 16-18, 2002, the Black Knight traveled to the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Little Rock, Ark., to participate in Army s seventh regional and eighth NCAA event. Returning to this year s squad will be two of five NCAA Black Knight participants. More knowledgeable and with a greater wealth of experience, Kevin Lee and Scott Manley will be looked upon to lead the team by example and guide the youthful squad. Missing from the team will be three All-Patriot League players in Ryan Hazelton, David Crawford and Pete Mangold. Lee, one of two seniors returning to this year s squad, will serve as captain. After tweaking his swing at the start of the 2002 spring season, Lee continually improved in each tournament last year. Lee finished the season with the Black Knights second best stroke average at Only a sophomore, Manley is the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year and finished the season with the team s top stroke average at Manley won his first tournament of his short career at the Patriot League Championships earning the crown on the third playoff hole. We are a very young team this year, said Head Coach Jimmy Ray Clevenger. But with Kevin (Lee) and Scott (Manley) returning, we have a sound basis to work. It will be important for them to pass on what they learned last Anthony Towne year, espe- cially their experience at the NCAA regional. Sharing time as the sixth golfer last season, both Anthony Towne and Jason Owenby return to the team. Towne, the only other senior on the squad, and sophomore Owenby will both push for one of the three open varsity spots. Also returning to the team will be sophomores Mark Erwin, Scott Manley Shane Mercer, Pete Phipps and Bryon Vincent, each bringing one year of experience to competition. Joining the returnees on the course will be six freshmen who will make an immediate impact on the team. We had a great recruiting year, said Clevenger. Like Scott last year, I think some of the freshmen will compete to play right away. Most people look at golf as an individual sport but I do not think that is true. We are a team. That is why I will always play the top five or six players in each outing. With this philosophy, it allows even a freshman to play. With the return of all-league players in Lee and Manley, and the addition of three new starters, the Black Knights look to remain on top of the Patriot League. Like last season, Army will travel south in hopes of gaining more playing time. In recent years, the Black Knights were invited to tournaments in California, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. A successful developmental tool for his players, Clevenger hopes the tough competition and more playing time will provide the team with the elements it needs to succeed. Last year, traveling down south gave us an edge against teams in our region. With the cold and damp weather in the Northeast during the early spring, it limits our practicing time. Going down south lets us play more which in turn helps us wrinkle out any creases we have before regional play, adds Clevenger NCAA Central Regional Participants 9

Not only did the team get to represent the Academy and the Army but they also got to see some of the world s best golfers play. The emotions surrounding the Ryder Cup reminds me a lot of the Army-Navy matches. You are basically playing for pride and for bragging rights for that year, continues Clevenger. While at the 1999 Ryder Cup, the the Army players had the oppertunity to mingle and pose for photos with some of the sports Army golf team members with the late Payne Stewart. most distinguished players. Representing the Academy at the 1999 Ryder Cup marked the second time the Army golf team was bestowed the honor. Clevenger had the opportunity to take his squad to Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., for the 1995 Army golf team members with Ben Crewshaw and the Ryder Cup Trophy.
