OBJECTIVES Develop a new irrigation system design for the Grangeville Country Club Golf Course (Holes 2-9) Produce a set of working blueprints of the best design including: Central control system, pump, water supply, pipe system, sprinkler type and placement, hydraulic analysis and irrigation scheduling 3

Design Breakdown Conceptual Design Water Storage Sprinkler Placement Pump Decisions Do nothing Expand existing pond Create new pond Sprinkler type # lines per hole Function of head choice Selected for GPM 70 radius 90 radius Mixture With 180 degree heads and how many? 4

General Requirements Specific Requirements Acceptable Performance Specs Irrigate the golf course New control system Water Attainment Sprinklers Sprinkler Layout Materials Important areas are watered. Additional water to key locations (greens and tee boxes). Individual Head Control Central Control System Sufficient water from well Sufficient pond capacity Types of sprinkler heads Water quality needed Sufficient coverage between sprinklers. Sufficient coverage for key locations Pipes (polyethylene pipes) Pumps Fairways watered to meet 7mm/day Potential Evapotranspiration Rate Greens and tee boxes watered to meet higher ET. Each head can be turned on and off independently. Irrigation controlled from one central location. 250 gpm capacity 360,000 gal. storage At least a 70ft radius at 30GPM. Total suspended solids less than 50 mg/l All important areas covered by multiple sprinklers. 4 sprinklers dedicated to each green and at least 2 for tee boxes. Type of Pipe Deep well submersible centrifugal 250 gpm Pond total 660 gpm Valves Gate valves in main lines at every 100 ft. 5

Evapotranspiration and Water Usage 6

Evapotranspiration and Water Usage Watering Area: Acres 7 mm depth max / day Total Gallons Needed for max day: 362,000 Gal 7

Water quality Suspended solids, PH, phosphorus. Filtration, injection of acid, add chemicals Experiment: suspended solids pond = 5mg/L suspended solids creek= 3 mg/l Total PO4 pond = mg/l Total PO4 creek = mg/l Irrigation standards: solids < 200 mg/l P04 < 1 mg/l

Water Storage Present Pond Volume: 240,000 Gal Pond Volume Needed: 360,000 Gal Conclusion: Need 120,000 Gal more Estimated Cost of putting in new Pond: $19,930 Estimated Cost of expanding existing pond: $12,700 8

PUMP Specs Pond Pump Needs psi Current state: 25 hp centrifugal pump, Running at about (85psi 270Gpm) Recommendations: Two addition Bell and Gosset series 80S 15 hp 3 x3 x7b centrifugal pumps 85psi) Use three pumps in series for safety reasons Well Pump Needs- 250Gpm for a continuous 24 hour flow rate Submersible pump 9

Pipe Designs Choose a 3 line for sprinkler lines Choose a 4 line for main lines w/ pipe and sprinkler placement Main line Cost = 6000ft*4.00$/ft = $24,000 11

Mainline Mainline= red Sprinkler lines =black 12

Valves For easy maintenance place a globe valve at every intersection of the pipe. Also, in case of main line breaks globe valves are placed every 100 feet of main line piping. 4 inch brass gate approx. $200/valve Main Pipe Length: 10,000 ft Total Estimated Cost: $20,000 21

Valves Cont.. Valves design 1: 20*2=40; Sprinkler Line Main Line Cost: $8,000 Valves design 2: 40*2=80; Valve Costs: 16,000 22

Sprinklers: Toro 690 series sprinkler 90 ft radius; At 85 psi, 51Gpm Toro B series sprinkler 70 ft radius; At 85psi, 32Gpm 13

Control System for individual head control Central Control System: $56,000 Satellite Field control Stations: $8,000 Total $48,000 Copper Wire Cost: $20,000 Estimated Control System Cost: $124,000 23

Our Suggestion Pond: Expand the existing pond Sprinkler type Mix of both Toro series 690 and B series Sprinkler Layout Triangulation; function of sprinkler types Pumps: Two additional pond pumps Expand/replace well pump 24

Acceptable Performance Specs Fairways watered to meet 7mm/day Potential Evapotranspiration Rate Greens and tee boxes watered to meet higher ET. Each head can be turned on and off independently. Irrigation controlled from one central location. 250 gpm capacity 360,000 gal. storage At least 80 Psi and 350 GPM. Total suspended solids less than 50 mg/l Entire area of each fairway must be irrigated by collapsing of three sprinklers 4 sprinklers dedicated to each green and at least 2 for tee boxes. Type of Pipe Deep well submersible centrifugal 250 gpm Pond total 660 gpm Gate valves in main lines at every 100 ft. Our Recommended Design Sprinkler Layout (triangulation) and Irrigation Scheduling Increased Sprinkler Number Each head separately wired to field controller, providing individual control. Central Control Station recommended controls everything from a central PC in an office. Well pump estimates used 250 gpm submersible well pump. Increased pond capacity to 360,000 gal with 2 ft added depth. Model Series B Sprinkler (Torro) Water was tested in lab and found to be 3.22 mg/l Triangulation pattern used provides coverage from at least 3 sprinklers through fairways. Used 4 sprinklers at greens and at least two at tees. Schedule 40 PVC For estimates, used hp submersible centrifugal pump that could be used at 250 gpm. Two additional 350 gpm pond pumps. Use old pump for backup/redundancy. Used brass gate valves at every 100 ft of main line. 25

Potential Problems/Risks Real World Obstacles trees, rocks, cart paths, etc. Pump malfunction Well capacity Current water rights 337 gpm Detailed Design Refined Fluid Calcs. Change in costs Testing sprinkler water distribution 26

Conceptual Design Future Plans Complete interim design report including project learning, alternative conceptual designs, and design recommendations. Finalize design selection with client. Detailed Design Further develop sprinkler layout plans. Determine most efficient main line placement. Determine exactly where control system stations will be placed. Detailed hydraulic calculations. Irrigation scheduling. Irrigation around clubhouse. Determine current well and well pump scenario to determine what is needed. Develop detailed drawings. 27

Future Plans Product Testing Test sprinkler output and distribution to validate manufacturer data. Ensure that our layout will provide uniform coverage based on testing. Product Validation Review and test design to ensure that there is nothing absent or erroneous. Finalize Design Complete final design report. Present final design recommendations and drawings to client. 28
