Becoming more financially sustainable. Growing membership and participation. Delivering high quality experiences. TEAM Golf This month, another successful trial for the TEAM Golf events series was completed in Canterbury with 85 young beginners under the age of 14 participating in four weeks of play. The events were held across the Weedons Country Club, Lincoln Golf Club, TaiTapu and Greendale Golf Clubs. Registration was open to boys and girls of all skill levels and no prior playing experience is necessary. The length of the course is shortened to suit young golfers creating a fun, low pressure environment to learn, develop skills and helps kids solve problems together. Every week, there is a different theme where players can expect various on course challenges and/or an off course challenge such as Best Dressed Team. A post event survey found that 3

94% of the parents suggested they were interested in opportunities to play golf with their children; 100% of participants indicated that they wanted to enter into TEAM Golf again; and Over half the participants parents surveyed responded that they were occasional casual golfers or had tried golf a few times at a range or golf course highlighting the value of introducing young people to golf as a way to re engage mums, dads or grandparents who may have given it a go in the past or increase the engagement of existing golfers with children starting their golfing journey. Based on a post event survey from participants and parents, Canterbury Golf held their first Family TEAM Golf event at the Templeton Golf Club which had 60 children and adults playing and competing against each other and three other golf clubs in South Canterbury, Pleasant Point, Fairlie and Timaru will all be getting in on the action creating their own Family Winter Series. Memorable quotes from the survey respondents were Playing golf with other girls my age and chance to make new friends. Being able to spend quality time with my boy. Supportive environment, and kids having fun on course! The feedback helps provide direction on how we can create future events and golf experiences that will help get kids loving the game. Another benefit of the TEAM Golf event series has been introducing more girls to golf and supporting their further involvement in the game by connecting them with Canterbury Girls Golf Group whose first day was held by Rachel Thow at Weedons Golf Club. Regional Support Manager, Richard Hudson said It s a good feeling seeing heaps of young people out on course enjoying golf with their mums and dads. The format worked really well maximising participation by the kids while giving the adults plenty of game time. The feedback on the day was overwhelmingly positive and the clear message that came through was that they would like to see more of these types of events being run for young people and families. Click here to watch a short video created by Canterbury Golf that showcases the experience. TEAM Golf is one of New Zealand Golf s initiatives being trialled to inspire more young people into the game of golf and provide memorable experiences. The event series will be spreading further to Southland, Otago, Auckland and Bay of Plenty. If you would like to find out more or your golf club is interested to be involved, please contact thiem.nguyen@nzgolf.org.nz We have created resources for you to help get started. Sports Biggest Showcase In partnership with 9 different sports, golf was involved in the Sports Biggest Showcase held at Eden Park. Each child received an activity card and were encouraged to sample all the different sports on offer. Each player had their card clipped after they completed the mini course challenge and smashed a bucket of balls into the SNAG inflatable. By completing every sport, children received a Goodie Bag. There were approximately 500 1,000 4

who turned up on the day. This was another fantastic opportunity to introduce new young golfers to the game and communicate with and connect their parents to local golf clubs. A short video was captured of the day and can be viewed here Membership and Rounds Reporting Membership Reporting The table below provides the latest total club membership numbers through until the end of April Rounds Reporting Estimated Rounds* Played (1 April 2018 to 30 April 2018) *The number of rounds played is based on actual numbers of scorecards printed (where available) and estimated values computed from the number of scores entered for handicapping. 5

Minister for Sport and Recreation The Minister for Sport and Recreation (Grant Robertson) recently set out his priorities for Sport NZ and the sector. Sport NZ have been asked to focus on how sport and physical activity can contribute to the Government s wider priorities across the social sector. This is recognition of the value that sport and physical activity can have in addressing wider social problems. Minister Robertson has also set four key priorities that are relevant to the work of sector partners (like New Zealand Golf): 1. Grow participation by girls and women, including their ability to pursue professional sporting careers. 2. Improve the overall rates, and quality, of participation in sport and recreation by low participating populations. 3. Strengthen the long term opportunities for New Zealanders with disabilities. 4. Address the drop off in young people s participation in sport and physical activity once they leave school. In his letter to Sport NZ, the Minister stated: My priority for women and girls goes beyond simply growing participation. I wish to see Sport NZ promote the importance of support for our elite women athletes and where feasible, the development of professional sport opportunities in New Zealand including the long standing issue of equitable remuneration. New Zealand Golf is enthused about the direction of the new Minister and we look forward to working with Sport NZ and others to advance his agenda. Sector Environmental Group Established Representatives from New Zealand Golf, the New Zealand Golf Industry Council and New Zealand Golf Course Superintendents Association have met to discuss the current and future environmental state of golf. The group has committed to an ongoing journey to understand and grow the positive environmental impact of golf across New Zealand. A terms of reference and purpose for the group is being developed and will be released to the industry in due course. Golf Sector Plan for Auckland 2018 workplan complete and work underway The Golf Sector Plan for Auckland is a document that articulates how golf will grow its contribution to Auckland across the following areas: Social and Community Outcomes Health and Wellbeing 6

Environmental Outcomes Economic Outcomes To achieve the long term goals articulated in the Golf Sector Plan for Auckland (GSPA), the working group has developed the attached workplan for The purpose of this workplan is to articulate the short term, yearly enablers that will lead to long term achievement of the priorities for Auckland. Work has already started on a number of initiatives. Hendry Qualifies for 147th Open Championship Michael Hendry has officially secured his place in the Open Championship for the second year in a row by finishing tied second at the Gateway to the Open, Mizuno Open this evening. After finishing inside the required top four, he can officially book his flights to the world s biggest stage which will be played at Carnoustie in July. Obviously a really good result, very happy about it, would have been nice to have been one shot better and got myself in the playoff and had a chance to win the tournament, but just nice to be back playing some good golf again, said Hendry. As the 2017 New Zealand Open Champion stood on the 72nd tee, he only needed a bogey at worst to secure his place at Carnoustie and he needed every shot as he held on to finish runner up once again and on the exact number (even par). Although Hendry fell just short of a victory once again, he also takes home $95,000 NZD to go with his invitation to The Open for his efforts which is enough to ease the pain. FULL LEADERBOARD 2019 Rules Modernisation Project Penalty Hazards As many of you will know the R&A and USGA undertook a Rules Modernisation project around five years ago that will see some major changes come into effect January 1, Over the next few editions of the partner update I will outline some of the things that club committees will need to consider for play at your courses from January 1 onwards. One of the things that clubs will want to consider is the change to the water hazard rule that will allow more liberal marking of hazards on your course.. Under the 2019 Rules of Golf, golf clubs and committee s will be able to mark areas of the course that do not contain water as penalty hazards. The types of areas that would be considered appropriate for marking as penalty hazards would be jungle like areas where finding a ball is almost impossible and by marking the area as a penalty hazard it would speed up pace of play as the player would not have to return to the tee for a lost ball. When marking areas of the course as a penalty hazard careful consideration should be given as the player is unable to take unplayable relief within the hazard. 7

Current boundaries of the course should not be marked as penalty hazards. Further guidance from the R&A and New Zealand Golf on penalty hazards will be distributed prior to the end of the year, however if any clubs would like to discuss areas they might consider marking as penalty hazards, please feel free to contact Dave Mangan at New Zealand Golf One other reminder is that local rules will also change with the rule changes, so clubs should ensure that they don t order too many club scorecards towards the end of the year. National Academy Selected for 2018/19 New Zealand Golf is excited to announce the 2018/19 National Academy squad, which includes six new comers. These players have been selected using the refreshed criteria of the recently published New Zealand Golf Selection Policy. The incumbent members who have been reselected into the National Academy squad include Daniel Hillier (Manor Park), Luke Brown (The Pines), Mark Hutson (Muriwai) and Rose Zheng (Pakuranga). The newly selected members are: Matt Mclean (Harewood), Kerry Mountcastle (Masterton), Kevin Koong (Muriwai), Juliana Hung (Russley), Caryn Khoo (Pakuranga) and Brittney Dryland (Titirangi). At this phase of selection, players are separated into two distinct tiers. Tier Two is the gateway to the National Academy which is for players who have shown great potential but may still have some way to go before representing New Zealand at senior level or turning professional. They have been identified as emerging talent but they will still have developmental gaps that need to be addressed while they strive to improve their on course performance s. A Tier One player has addressed the majority of their developmental gaps. While they are still on their skill mastery journey they have shown deep engagement in their programme and have a number of competitive performances that show evidence of this growing mastery. This evidence will likely include strong international performances. For a guide to the levels of performance mastery, skills, standards and behaviours required to achieve selection into the National Academy, please click here. The players below have been placed in the following tiers: Tier One Daniel Hillier. Tier Two Juliana Hung, Brittney Dryland, Caryn Khoo, Rose Zheng, Luke Brown, Matt Mclean, Mark Hutson, Kerry Mountcastle, and Kevin Koong. Nick Voke and Ryan Chisnall have now moved into professional ranks which takes them to the next phase (Phase Four) of the Talent Development Programme, with both players receiving support as Rookie Professionals to assist them to establish themselves on a professional Tour. 8

2018/19 National Academy members: Juliana Hung (Russley), Brittney Dryland (Titirangi), Caryn Khoo (Pakuranga), Rose Zheng (Pakuranga), Daniel Hillier (Manor Park) Luke Brown (The Pines), Matt Mclean (Harewood), Mark Hutson (Muriwai), Kerry Mountcastle (Masterton), and Kevin Koong (Muriwai). The Origins of Handicapping The history of our game has origins in Scotland going back to 1457, but there are earlier references to games very similar recorded 200 years before that in Holland. The game of golf, as we know it today, is generally considered a Scottish invention. But what about the origins of handicapping which today provide us with a competitive playground even though we have a huge range of abilities? The first reference to handicapping in golf goes back to 1687 when betting was a big part of playing the sport, but it wasn t until the mid nineteenth century that a more general way of allocating shots became common. Allan Robertson was generally considered the game s first professional and he made a significant portion of his income by wagering on the golf course. He created the concept of giving strokes based on four different allocations. Third one, a stroke given every three holes Half one, a stroke given at every alternate hole One more, a stroke given at every hole Two more, two strokes given at every hole By 1881, many clubs adopted the approach of averaging a golfer s best three scores and then deducting the course rating. Here started the most common debate in our sport with records showing that letters were sent to the newspapers complaining that the system was not fair. Just before the turn of the century the approach was becoming more accurate in trying to present a system that would provide more portability. This was an era when national golf associations were being formed and one of their key responsibilities was to oversee handicapping. The pressure was on as the attention of the golfing public heightened and there was a push to address the inaccuracy of course ratings. A common formula was required. Over 100 years on and we still have a course rating and handicap system that provides much discussion. But we have mathematicians, professors and historical data available to influence a better approach. If we follow the guidelines as in the handicapping piece below, then golf will be played in a fun and competitive environment. Fair Play One of the great things that sets our game apart from any other, is the way we can play competitions and have an equitable playing ground. Through the course rating and handicap system we can set course handicaps on the day which provides the best equalisation of our mixed ability. We often hear of clubs that either don t apply some of the recommended stroke allowance adjustments, or don t believe they should be applied. This issue normally relates to mixed competitions and the extra strokes allocated to the women. Well, thanks to the very thorough process we follow in determining course ratings for both genders, we can use those numbers to provide equitable course handicaps when the two genders compete together, and when the same gender plays from different tees in the same competition. 9

One of the easiest ways to understand why the adjustment occurs is not to use the two gender scenario. Instead, let s imagine our leading male amateur Daniel Hillier competing against himself at Royal Wellington where he plays two different courses, the Black at 6,600 metres with a course rating of 75.5, and the White at 5,780 metres with a course rating of The Daniel from the White tees has a huge advantage in playing the easier rated course so for equitable competition the Daniel playing from the harder rated Black course would add five strokes to his course handicap. The added strokes are based on the difference in course rating, which is 4.9, rounded up to 5. Using the two gender scenario, let s consider Daniel is competing against Wellington number one Darae Chung at Royal Wellington. Daniel is playing the Black course, as above, with a course rating of 75.5 and Darae is playing the Green course at 5,606 metres with a course rating of For equitable competition, Daniel, playing from the harder rated Black course, would add three strokes to his course handicap, being the difference in the course ratings of 2.5 rounded up to 3. The norm when making this type of allowance is that the women are playing the higher rated course and they require extra help to remain equitable. Length statistics collated over many years will confirm that the scratch male golfer hits his tee shot on average 40 yards further than the female scratch golfer. The distance lengthens for the 20 handicappers, with the men hitting it 50 yards further than the female player. This difference increases when considering two strokes on a par 4 or 5 hole. Out to 70 yards when comparing the scratch players and 90 yards for the 20 handicappers, yet it is very rare that the women s tees are that far forward of the men s. The design of most of our courses and the teeing ground from where the women s tees have been located, tend to provide a lengthy challenge, which results in higher course ratings relative to the men. If your club wants to run a mixed competition, or same gender competing from different tees, compare the course ratings and allocate the extra strokes accordingly. Full information and examples on players competing from different tees is posted on our website at Tips for the Winter For most of us our winter golf is going to be in challenging conditions. It might be the temperature, the casual water or the soft fairways, meaning the course is likely to play longer. Our first recommendation regards course set up. Your course has been rated for conditions in spring and autumn, so if the ball is not rolling as far as usual, then move your tees forward. The objective is to present a challenge as close to the course rating you have for each set of tees, so if that means moving the white tee markers closer to your yellow tees, then do so. One of the most common local rules in golf is to allow preferred lies, more commonly referred to as a clean and place here in New Zealand. For those of us longer in the tooth than others, we grew up with a 6 place, which these days we call 15 centimetres. But there is a growing trend to increase this measurement to a one club length measurement. Most courses in the United States use this distance and if you follow the USPGA Tour or European Tour, you will note that they use one club length. So just as you are trying to help your golfers in the set up of the golf course, also consider this measurement. National Group Buying Programme n3 10
