November 2016 To: All New Zealand Golf Clubs, New Zealand Golf District Associations and New Zealand Golf Life Members Good afternoon, Welcome to the latest New Zealand Golf Partner Update. As we head toward the end of the year, it is a busy time for all in the golf sector. Here at New Zealand Golf we have our heads down working hard on various initiatives to help grow and support the game. This communication supplements our regular communication channels and provides a personal update on a monthly basis from New Zealand Golf to our key partners in the golf industry. Please feel free to pass this to anyone at your club or District Association who you think may wish to read this update. 3 She Loves Golf 2.0 is going really well with over 80 She Loves Golf events completed around the country to date. All events have received between She Loves Golf goodie bags filled with partner product (Maybelline make up, Srixon She Loves Golf logo d balls, She Loves Golf logo d tees, OVi water, L affare coffee, anti flamme pot, OSM bars, Aloe up sunscreen, Essano skin care product, IOG voucher, Cut magazine), a total of over 2000 goodie bags provided around the country. Clubs are reporting good numbers attending and on going engagement with programmes. In conjunction with Holden, four She Loves Golf starting out in golf short videos have been created using Laura McGoldrick and Gracie Taylor and are about to be released for social media and to be included on both lovegolf.co.nz and the Holden Clubhouse websites. Promotion is going well with the ambassadors doing a great job driving visibility of the campaign to many thousands of eye balls. A great result was seeing Dan Carters wife, Honor Carter, getting in on the She Loves Golf action in Italy, her #shelovesgolf post received over 4,500 views. Click the links below to check out some of the action: Instagram : Facebook: Twitter: Other key promotion: Website over 9,000 unique visitors to date registrations over 700 Woman s Day two page spread Crowd Goes Wild segment with Jamie Curry and Hayley Holt Radio $60,000 national spend The Hits Daisy and Israel Dagg interview The Breeze Gracie Taylor interview NZ Herald feature article Stuff.co.nz article ieat She Loves Golf features with both Lydia Ko and Gemma Flynn Pop up activations: Friday 12 November, Aotea Square, Auckland 300 participants Sunday 27 November, Riccarton Golf Club, Christchurch 70 participants Thursday 1 December, Civic Square, Wellington Thursday 8 December, Hatea Park, Whangarei Sunday 11 December, Aorangi 3
Great to see Aorangi securing their own She Loves Golf ambassadors for their region! As a result they got this cover on the front page of their local campaign to draw women to golf and the ambassadors are really helping drive visibility in the area. Always love hearing how you re getting on so please jan@nzgolf.org.nz with how your event went. A survey will be circulated in December for collating feedback. New Zealand Referees at the Australian Open Two of New Zealand Golf s volunteer referees Kevin Tregunno (Auckland / North Harbour) and Anthony Alberts (Canterbury) represented New Zealand Golf on the Rules Committee at the recent Australian Open Championship. Anthony and Kevin joined 34 other Australian based referees for the week and were given walking assignments with the marquee groups. Their week started on Wednesday with a refresher on dealing with TIO s followed by a briefing on the Local Rules and Supplementary Local rules. While Anthony had a quite week requiring only one ruling (dealing with a ball at rest moved situation), Kevin was involved in a slightly more intriguing situation. 4
On the 17 th hole a player in his group had a birdie putt which he left right on the edge of the hole. The player walked up to the hole and then waited a long time for the ball to drop, which it eventually did. Unfortunately for the player, Kevin was correct in ruling that he had waited for more than 10 seconds for the ball to drop which meant in technical terms that the ball was deemed at rest after overhanging on the edge of the hole for more than 10 seconds. As the ball subsequently fell into the hole it is deemed to have been holed with the previous shot but the player adds a one stroke penalty. This resulted in a par instead of a birdie. Not surprisingly the player wasn t pleased to have been told it wasn t a birdie and a roving referee was called in and television evidence was sought. With no television evidence the roving official confirmed that Kevin s decision was correct. Certainly something that you don t usually see happening on a golf course and proved Kevin s great knowledge and grasp of the Rules of Golf. Both guys really enjoyed their experience commenting on how well the course was set up and what great condition it was in. Auckland wins the Diners Club Freyberg Masters After 13 long years, Auckland won the 2016 Freyberg Masters in dramatic fashion at the scenic Chisholm Links Golf Club in Dunedin. The deep south offered a variety of conditions all week, but on the final day produced stunning weather that Auckland enjoyed as they fended off Wellington and North Harbour to win for the first time since After last year s heartbreak when they held a dominant lead heading into the final round, only to lose it the Aucklanders sealed the deal at the Chisholm Park Links. James Gardner s match proved to be pivotal in the win as he came back from one down with six to play before winning the next four holes on the trot to help his side to a famous victory. Bay of Plenty will be ruing their finish as they were in the driver s seat throughout the afternoon before stumbling to a passionate Hawkes Bay line up who finished the week on a high and denied Bay of Plenty a chance of back to back titles. A standout performer and deserving player of the tournament was North Harbour number one, Mike Leeper who couldn t have done much more for his third placed Harbour side with a record of seven wins and one halve. 5
TAKE ON GOLF S ULTIMATE CHALLENGE! SIGN UP FOR THE 2017 NZ SPEEDGOLF OPEN 4 & 5 MARCH 2017 Entries are now open for the third annual NZ Speedgolf Open that will be staged at the Rotorua Golf Club Arikikapakapa on the weekend of 4 5 March The sport involves playing a round of golf in the lowest possible sum of strokes and time. The score is calculated by adding the player s total score to the time taken to complete the course. Last year s NZ Speedgolf Open winner Richard Olsen scored (75 shots in minutes). Next year s event dates align with the Australian Speedgolf Open scheduled for the weekend of March so the opportunity exists for international speedgolf competitors to take in two national championships in the southern hemisphere. Categories for the 2017 NZ Speedgolf Open: Individual (Top Flight and Emerging Talent) $95pp, 2 days 36 holes Social Individual (Saturday or Sunday) $50pp, 1 day 18 holes Social Pairs (Men, Women and Mixed, Saturday or Sunday) $50 per pair, 1 day 9 holes, each person alternate holes The tournament is open to all comers, keen athletes or casual golfers. Players do not have to be a member of a golf club. Participants can register online at under the Tournaments section. For more info, Nicole Leger, Event Manager at speedgolfnz@gmail.com Determining the Slope Rating The question often asked is how can the Slope Rating on a set of tee markers with a Course Rating of, for example, 70.7 be higher than on a set of tee markers with a Course Rating of, for example, What has to be remembered is the Slope Rating is the mark that indicates the measurement of the relative difficulty of a course for players who are not Scratch golfers compared to the Course Rating. For example, a Slope Rating of 122 indicates the Bogey golfer does not require as much assistance when competing against the Scratch golfer as he does on a course with a Slope Rating of 126. A Course Handicap is determined by multiplying a Handicap Index by the Slope Rating of the course played and divided by 113, the average 6
Slope Rating. Therefore, it is possible a player may play off a lower Course Handicap when playing the course with the higher Course Rating. The main reason for the Slope Rating being higher on the shorter/lower rated course than the longer/higher rated course is that the Obstacle values on the shorter course can receive higher values, meaning that they are more in play than on the longer course. Some Obstacles, such as Out of Bounds, Extreme Rough and Water Hazards, may not come within the landing zones of the Bogey golfer on the longer course and therefore, for course rating purposes, may not attract a value. However, the same Obstacles, if in the Bogey landing zones on the shorter course, would be evaluated for course rating purposes and attract a value. Another Obstacle which is evaluated is Green Target where the value is based on the distance of an approach shot into the green and the diameter of the green. The Green Target value also affects Bunker and Rough and Recoverability values. For example, a par five measures 552 yards from the black tee and 530 yards from the white tee. The Bogey approach shot from the black tee is 12 yards and from the white tee is 160 yards. (Bogey man hits a 200 yard tee shot and 170 yard second/third shots.) From the longer tee the Bogey golfer has an easier approach shot into the green than the Bogey golfer from the shorter tee. The Green Target, Rough and Recoverability and Obstacles surrounding the green would be of a lower value on the shorter approach than on the longer approach. It can be a difficult area for players to comprehend, but the reversal of Obstacle values between tee markers, as explained above, is likely to impact on the Slope Rating calculation. World Class Benchmarking Tool Available in NZ With the support of New Zealand Golf, The Golf Managers Association of New Zealand (GMANZ), in conjunction with Golf Management of Australia (GMA) is proud to deliver to the New Zealand golf club community, a world class benchmarking tool. So why would this be of interest to your club? It allows decisions to be made using fact rather than opinion. It allows you to rank your club against other clubs similar to yours in an apples vs apples comparison. Using the information correctly can maximise the efficiencies at your club, leading to cost saving or better outcomes for your investment. Golf Club Benchmarking is business intelligence developed specifically for the golf industry. Golf Club Benchmarking allows Managers to elevate fact over opinion and will ensure that general managers and boards are properly equipped to focus on strategic issues. 7
Want to know more? Contact Des Top Golfing Community Rallies to Provide Earthquake Support The golfing community of New Zealand has raised in excess of $35,000 towards the Red Cross Earthquake relief fund. Started by a call from New Zealand Golf to get clubs and members to donate towards a Give a Little page which has raised more than $13,000 New Zealand professional golfers Danny Lee and Ryan Fox joined the party. The pair pledged to donate $500 for every team birdie that they made at the World Club of Golf in Melbourne. Following that call Holden who has Fox as a brand ambassador decided to join the party and match the efforts of Fox and Lee. With 22 birdies during the week Fox and Lee raised a total of $22,000 with the donation matched from Holden. Anyone can still donate to the page here: Toro Interprovincials Underway as Waikato Aim for Three Peat One of the biggest events on the amateur calendar is underway as we speak with Waikato Golf aiming for a piece of history by winning three Toro Interprovincial titles in a row. The three peat was last achieved by Bay of Plenty in Winning the historical Toro Interprovincials never comes easy and this week is no exception with a plethora of teams putting their hand up to challenge for national glory. Wellington are ones to watch with Daniel Hillier, Jonathan Cane and Kerry Mountcastle among the top ranked players who have been in fine form of recent. Hillier made his debut at the AAC this year and continues to develop an exciting career and a very full trophy cabinet. However, one thing missing is the Toro title and he will be gunning to tick this off his bucket list late this week. 8
The Bay of Plenty boys showed they enjoy the match play format after a hint of success at the New Zealand Amateur in Royal Wellington earlier this month. William Howard, Henry Spring and qualifying Stroke Play leader Shaun Campbell all showed they can foot it in this form of the game and will be dangerous throughout the week. For all golf fans across the country the Toro Interprovincials are the pinnacle event for their District, they are remembered for many years to come and they are certainly worth bragging rights for 365 more days. Over the last five years the title has been shared by the following regions: 2015 Waikato 2014 Waikato 2013 Manawatu/Wanganui 2012 Bay of Plenty 2011 Southland For LIVE SCORING of the Interprovincials CLICK HERE For social media updates throughout the week please follow us on Snapchat and Case Studies & Information Guides (3 New) These case studies and information guides not only celebrate innovate thinking and success in clubs but also provide valuable information your club can use. 10 To view all previous New Zealand Golf case studies (over 60), please visit Player Preparation under way for the 2017 Asia Pacific Amateur Championship With less than 12 months to go, New Zealand Golf began the first of a series of preparation workshops in the lead up to the 2017 Asia Pacific Amateur Championships. The two day workshop was held prior to the recent New Zealand Amateur Championship. On day one of the workshop, 15 of New Zealand s leading amateur players spent time with Greg Turner getting both an insight into the design considerations of the new Royal Wellington layout as well as learning about Greg s own strategic approach to playing competitive golf. This included time spent out on course looking over the new layout and working through the various shot options on offer. Day two was a chance for the group to review Turners session with National Performance Coach Jay Carter. The group revisited a number of the tactical concepts discussed while also looking inwardly at the strengths of their own games. This was done, where possible, with evidence gathered from performance data, allowing the players to work through possible game day scenarios based on this analysis. More time was then spent on course, with a focus on assessing the green complexes, looking at where likely in position or out of position locations were and also giving rise to possible tee box strategies. The two days were a great chance to set the tone toward a thorough and well thought out campaign for each player in the lead up to next year s event. Thanks must go firstly to Greg Turner for graciously giving his time to this group of aspiring golfers as part of their preparation for next year s Asia Pacific Amateur Championships and also to the Royal Wellington Golf club for hosting and making the group feel so welcome. Sport NZ Insights Tool The Insights Tool in an interactive online resource of information and data, designed specifically for those involved in the sport and recreation sector. The data has been sourced from Statistics NZ, Active NZ Survey, NZ Secondary School Sports Council, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Nielson Research. The information will complement your golf clubs strategic plan, marketing plan and enable identification of population groups who are of interest to your club. Three valuable ways your golf club can use the Insights Tool in 2017: 10
1. To understand what your regional and community profile currently looks like. It will enable you to segment by demographics such as ethnicity, gender or life stages. This is useful to understand the population size of retirees or the percentage of young families that reside within your catchment. 2. To understand how demographic trends within your region or community will change over the next 3, 5 or 10 years. This will inform whether the population within your community is projected to grow or decline and if there will be significant change in the age or ethnic profile. 3. To understand the profile of schools within your community. Your board and PGA Professional will be able analyse the popularity of sports by participation and the market size for opportunities to grow junior golf in your catchment. Better data and information will result in better informed decisions to attract your prospective customers and improved transparency during the decision making process will save your club valuable time. A public version of the Insights Tool is available at nz public chart/ To access video tutorials and the private version of the Insights Tool which holds the full repository of data and information, please contact Thiem at Thiem.Nguyen@nzgolf.org.nz Governance 101 With the AGM season in full swing for a number of clubs it is an ideal time to remind clubs of some really great Governance resources available through Sport NZ. Do your incoming board/committee members truly know what is required of them? Do they understand what governance means? Are strategic outcomes your main meeting focus? These questions and many others are answered in the Sport NZ Governance 101 course. The links below will give you a greater insight into the course, the why and the what: A previous NZ Golf case study will also give you more information regarding the course: %20Online%20Course.pdf New Zealand Golf Club & Member Benefits 11
