This communication supplements our regular communication channels and provides a personal update from New Zealand Golf to our key partners in the golf industry. Please feel free to pass this to anyone at your club or District Association who you think may wish to read this update. As always, our activity this month has been guided by our Strategic Plan which defines our two core objectives as Growing the Game and Supporting the Game. We hope you enjoy reading about some of things that have kept us busy in the last month. Happy golfing. NZ Golf: Case Studies The New Zealand Golf case studies celebrate innovate thinking and success in clubs. It is hoped that other clubs can learn and use the information to implement positive change within their own environment. In order for New Zealand Golf to continue to produce quality case studies we are heavily reliant on proactive clubs submitting their examples. We want the case studies to be informative and useful each month and as such we will only produce and share case studies with quality information. An indication of golf s globalisation since 1904 is that, in 2016 in Rio, at least 30 countries, from all five continents, are expected to be represented in both the men's and women's competitions. Prior to the vote to reinstate golf into the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympic Games, a presentation by a group of golf ambassadors helped sway the 121st session of the International Olympic Committee. These ambassadors included: Peter Dawson (R&A, IGF) and Ty Votaw (PGA Tour, IGF), along with golf professionals Pádraig Harrington of Ireland, Michelle Wie of the United States, Suzann Pettersen of Norway and 16 year old 2009 British Amateur champion Matteo Manassero of Italy. Dawson was quoted saying: "We are extremely grateful that Padraig, Michelle, Suzann and Matteo were able to join us to help communicate the genuine interest world class players of all ages share in golf becoming an Olympic sport." On 9 October 2009, the International Olympic Committee had their final vote and the vote passed, which officially made golf an Olympic sport for the 2016 and 2020 summer games. Format and Qualification System The IGF format proposed to the IOC of a 72 hole individual stroke play competition for both men and women reflecting leading players opinion of the fairest and best way to identify an Olympic champion. In the event of a tie for either first, second or third place, a three hole playoff will determine the medal winner(s). The IOC has restricted the IGF to an Olympic field of 60 players for each of the men s and women s competition. The IGF will utilise the official world golf rankings to create the Olympic golf rankings as a method of determining eligibility. The top 15 world ranked players will be eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country. Beyond the top 15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top 15. Barra da Tijuca Venue for the Golf Competitions of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games The final touches are underway on the construction of the golf course at Reserva de Marapendi in Barra da Tijuca, the district that will contain the largest number of Rio 2016 Olympic Games venues. It will be a unique Olympic Games venue, located approximately five kilometres from the Athletes Village and seven kilometres from the Main 2

Press Centre (MPC) and the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), South of Avenida das Americas and North of Lagoa de Marapendi. After the 2016 Olympic Games, the course will be used as a public facility with the chief purpose of promoting golf in Brazil and the globe, representing one of the most important Olympic Games legacies for sport development in the country. 4 Many of you will be aware that the New Zealand Golf Board publishes a summary of its regular meetings. These meeting summaries are published on the New Zealand Golf website and are available to be read by all stakeholders by visiting the following link: Developing a Strategy for Junior Golf in New Zealand New Zealand Golf has just completed the appointment of a Junior Advisory Board to assess a new path forward for Junior Golf activity in New Zealand. The purpose of this group is to advocate for Young New Zealander s (5 18 years) and provide recommendations to NZG on its development of a Junior Golf Strategic Framework. The group will ensure there is a structured junior golf participation pathway with relevant opportunities for quality golf experiences that grow a love of golf from an early age. The objectives of the group are as follows: a) Identify strategies for increasing grassroots junior participation; to remove the barriers, support the drivers and influencers of junior participation. b) Identify strategies for increasing junior membership; making the transition from participation to membership seamless and more attractive. c) Identify strategies to retain junior members and successful transition players into adult membership or participation pathways. d) Identify strategies that support a participant focused philosophy and enhance the system capability of golf clubs, coaches, volunteers, and events that support the junior participant journey. e) Continuous improvement of the provision of junior golf to ensure there is long term player pathway that offers quality experiences, relevant products and opportunities to participate. f) To oversee Junior Handicapping and Membership/Participation structures and models. Following the public expressions of interest process, the appointed members of the group are: 1. Chair Murray Macklin 2. NZ Golf Jan Rowsell 3. NZ Golf Liz McKinnon 4. District Grant Lewis 5. District Rhys Watkins 6. RST Victoria Barton 7. PGA/Coaching Simon Thomas 8. PGA/Coaching Jay Carter 9. Other Representative Phil Tataurangi 4

LOVE Golf KOvember KOvember As part of the Target Market Participations Programme outlined in the New Zealand Golf Community Golf Plan and in line with LOVE Golf providing a platform to assist clubs in targeting specific market segments, KOvember has been developed targeting females. The LOVE Golf KOvember campaign, is a female targeted initiative aimed at getting girls playing golf in November. The intention is for the initiative to be a fully integrated campaign between New Zealand Golf, District Associations, clubs and other golf industry partners. Background Given the profile and success of Lydia, and the impact she is already seen to be having on female participation in golf in New Zealand (junior girl s numbers were the only numbers to increase in 2014), now is a good time to capitalise on this and specifically target females to give golf a go, or to play more golf. As with all LOVE Golf promotion, this initiative will require national promotion from New Zealand Golf alongside local initiatives and programmes by our golf clubs and District Associations. A combined, targeted campaign across one month to create as much noise and interest as possible. Together New Zealand Golf, District Association s and clubs can all have a bigger impact than individual, disjointed spend and effort. Purpose The main purpose of KOvember, will be for clubs, Districts, golf professionals, driving ranges or any similar organisations to run an initiative or programme (or several) in the month of November aimed at attracting females to the game. New Zealand Golf will provide guidance and advice, however flexibility continues to be a key focus, realising that all clubs and regions are unique so clubs therefore have the flexibility to run a programme or initiative that best works for them. Desired Outcomes 150 clubs run at least one female targeted initiative in November At least 10 organisations (outside of a club or District) run a female targeted initiative in November (eg SNAG, driving ranges) Make golf more appealing to females, positively changing perceptions Capitalise on Lydia Ko s positive profile to get women playing golf Remove barriers for females to get into golf Provide clubs with resources to attract the female segment of the market 5,000 females engage with the game of golf in November as a result of KOvember initiatives 500 females register to participate further with a club, either through registering for a coaching programme or membership Sustainability: Potential for KOvember to be an annual or bi annual promotion with more clubs engaging each year 5

Through KOvember clubs will be have far greater knowledge and resources (info pack, tool kit imagery and slogans, coaching programme and initiative ideas, best practice and what worked case studies) on how to attract the female segment of the market, and therefore the ability to take ownership of attracting this group which they can undertake at any time throughout the year or in the future, as often as they like, at times that best suit them The platform built by DotGolf in the back end for clubs to upload initiatives onto lovegolf.co.nz will be transferrable to be used again for the next time or next target segment promotion Content produced such as videos and social media posts, will remain on lovegolf.co.nz and can be repromoted at any time in the future by NZ Golf, clubs and Districts Model: The backend capability built for KOvember enabling clubs and other organisations to upload initiatives to lovegolf.co.nz will be applied to other target segment campaigns Key learnings across club engagement, initiative uptake, promotion insights, ambassador engagement etc will enable the same/similar concept to be rolled out in a more effective manor each time This model of a national promotion for a particular market segment, combined with club, District and other industry organisation engagement at a local level, will then be able to be rolled out again targeting different segments of the market (with improvements made from the key learnings of KOvember) resulting in clubs having relevant resources and knowledge on continuing to attract these segments in the future (greatly increasing club capability) Brief Timeline: August/September DotGolf front and back end for lovegolf.co.nz built Clubs receive KOvember info packs from New Zealand Golf Clubs to upload info into DotGolf Live/Edge (or send to New Zealand Golf to do so) October Clubs continue uploading info Promotion to begin in final two weeks November Promotion in full swing December Review New Zealand Golf and the PGA of New Zealand Alignment/Merger Discussion Paper Over the past four years, New Zealand Golf and the PGA of New Zealand have worked closely together to assess the best approach to the future administration of golf in New Zealand. Considering the future strategic context of golf in New Zealand, the two Boards feel there are many critical issues facing the game and believe it is in the best interests of the game that the two organisations work together to address the issues and lead the game forward. Click Here to view a discussion document that shares our thinking on the best path forward for our administration structure at a national level. As part of the agreed discussion process we are now inviting our respective members to consider the document and provide feedback. There is much to consider and it is the views of our members that matter most. We need to 6

understand these views before we complete any further work. Members can provide written feedback direct to the Chief Executive of either organisation and we encourage them to do so. The timeline for this process is as follows: May/June/July Member consultation. July 15 Member feedback period closes. July/August New Zealand Golf and PGA of New Zealand to assess and review feedback. After assessing and reviewing the feedback received from members, the New Zealand Golf and NZ PGA Boards will establish the best path forward and then enter into further rounds of member consultation. Are you wanting to help someone who is starting out at Golf? Become a PGA Foundation Coach now It could be your neighbour, close friend, grandchild, son or daughter. The new Foundation Coach Modules have be designed to help you learn the very basics of coaching. You don t need to be a great player yourself you just need the enthusiasm and desire to help others who are starting out at this great game of ours. Foundation Coach comprises three online modules (plus a short introductory module), each of which is interactive and where you have the opportunity to grow your understanding of coaching and player development. These modules are designed to give you the introductory coaching skills and tools to support new golfers as they try the game of golf for the very first time. PGA Coach Live is a joint initiative of New Zealand Golf and PGA of New Zealand. The objective of the Foundation Coach programme is twofold. While this may be the beginning of a life time in coaching for some, for others it will be the chance to learn just enough coaching skills to provide a level of support to help those people who thinking about playing golf. This programme is not a replacement for long term coaching programmes. It is in fact deigned to bridge the gap for those people you haven t yet begun a coaching programme with a certified PGA Coach but are wanting to dip their toes in and needs some initial support to do so. A Foundation Coach can play a role here, they can support the first touch for a golfer as they try the sport for the very first time, providing a safe and fun environment before passing the new golfer on to participate in a formal coaching programme. And hey, maybe even your own game will improve! The Foundation Coach programme is valued at $19.95, but as an introductory offer to the members of New Zealand Golf Clubs the cost is only $9.95, and all you need to do is: 1. Go to 2. Click on Register 3. Enter your details, and for the Join Code enter COACH 4. You will then use your credit card to pay the $9.95 and begin your coaching journey! 7
